I generally like Petfood Express, but a recent pricing decision has made me reconsider where I buy my dog products. They produce their own brand of treats, Fog City, yet market them as if they're an independent brand. My dog loves their rolled beef gullets, which I've been buying in 1 lb bulk for months at $29.99. Now, they've raised the price to $39.99--a 33% increase on a product they manufacture themselves. This almost certainly reflects a response to demand rather than rising costs, given that individual gullets haven't increased in price. It seems like a case of, "We've sold out for two months straight--let's see how much more we can charge." Knowing this is their own product, the justification can't be higher supplier costs. It's frustrating to see this kind of price manipulation, especially when price gouging has been a topic of national attention. read more

I had stumbled in Pet Food Express about a month ago, I usually go to PetCo/Unleashed. A friend had recommended I try them due to me not being able to find what I was looking for there. So, upon my visit I met DJ and she introduced me to her dog "Moca" and shared a few of her dogs favorite treats with me. I grabbed a few to take home with me for my doggy; which were the Jerky Yum in the Pork and beef flavor. Although, I was coming in for a great leash and harness- that she had already helped me with; I also found some great treats I later found out my dog ABSOLUTELY loves and came back in today!!! While I was there a month ago I also spoke with Travis about good hygiene practices/treats to give my dog for his tart build up. When I came back today I was greeted by not DJ and TRAVIS, both smiling and very helpful per usual. Pet Food Express in Montclair has been really great to me & my puppy Violet. I noticed that there is variation in how helpful the staff is or isn't from store to store, and I have to say I love the staff at this store. My baby Violet is a very large puppy and is very anxious about her baths. I take her in to the self-service bath and it makes everything so much easier for both of us. No bending over and they supply everything. The water is nice and warm but not too hot and I appreciate the towel supply. Violet does a lot of crying in the bathtub and sometimes will actually shriek. The morning weekday staff is always so kind to her. They often give her extra treats and talk really sweetly to her. Sometimes she gets a few extra pets and hugs. It's really nice because she gets rewarded for having her bath. They are very kind. We appreciate y'all! Pet supplies are great. I love the buy four and get one free deal which they still have. Violet gets some of the best food and they never disappoint with what they have to offer. Their natural shoe selection is particularly impressive. There is a parking lot! Gotta love that. Highly recommend. read more

First, this is one of the rare businesses on Piedmont Ave that has a parking lot. That's gold. You can order online and pick up your purchases which is nice. They have a great selection. But it's the service. These are pet lovers. Dog lovers. They're kind and will take the time to make you get exactly the right thing. Quick story. I needed a dog collar because I'd lost ours and I was taking our dog to be boarded for the weekend. When I got to the store, it was too warm to leave the dog in the car but since I didn't have a collar, I couldn't put her on a leash to take in the store. I called and they suggested that I order a collar online and they'd watch for the order and run it out to me in the parking lot. It turns out I ordered a collar that was too small and the woman who ran the collar out to me ran back in and came out with a selection for me and we found just the right one. She was so nice. I felt like I was being a huge burden and she couldn't have been nicer or more patient. Love this place. read more

Employee Logan was incredibly helpful and sympathetic to my plight (I have a 20 yo cat who should only be eating wet food but really prefers kibble, and will only eat pate if it's "something new.") Logan had great suggestions, let me know about their "if he won't eat it, put it back in the can, bring it back in, and we'll find something better" policy (HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS? We've been bringing our dog here for baths, treats, supplies, etc for 2+ years now and I rarely review chain stores but our experience tonight warranted a special mention. Their pet self-wash station had been closed when the Rona hit and I was counting down the days to return because paying for a groomer was $$$. I was all stoked when I called the store earlier in the day to confirm washing stations resumed and honestly never been more excited to take my baby for a bath. When we arrived, a store associate told us they were closing at 6pm (and it was about 10 till). We rushed to the washing station and hoped to squeeze in a quick bath but the same associate quickly came and told us we couldn't since they were closing at 6pm. I was irritated since I called the store earlier and hadn't been informed of this and the store information of hours is also inaccurate online. The store associate was nice as can be about it and gave us a bath coin for the inconvenience AND a free bag of high quality treats. They listened to my feedback and really made us feel like we mattered as customers even though I'm sure closing the store early wasn't their decision. We got Hiro weighed and the Capstar. Hiro needed a new leash, brush and a treat all of which Logan helped us find. We also did not know they have self washing stations. Everyone at this location are helpful and always ask if you have any questions. One SA in particular helped me through a really tough moment with my elderly cat Stinky. I was at a low point with her eating schedule and in a last ditch effort to try some new food I came to this location. She had already been to the vet where they told me basically that they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. The SA helping me heard my situation and made some recommendations, telling me not to worry. I can't tell you how much you helped me that day and my cat started to eat one of the options you recommended. I almost cried right there in the store because this person was so understanding and said they had a picky eater (cat) too. They had blue or purple/pink hair at the time, sorry I forgot your name. Ever since I got a puppy at the beginning of this year we've been frequenting the Pet Food Express not only here but any of the convenient locations around our part of East Bay. This chain does an incredible job of keeping operations consistent across all stores. The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, the quality of everything is great, and they have a generous return policy for when something doesn't quite work out the way we expected. Our pup goes crazy for the chicken feet at the deli which is buy 3 get 1 free. We can't wait til he's old enough to come to the store with us and experience the joys of a nice safe place (with free parking lots at every location so far!) where everyone already knows all about how to make him happy. read more

This PFE is FANTASTIC. While small, it has almost everything you could possibly need, the service and kindness of the staff is outstanding, and it's so clean inside despite animals of sizes and ages come inside. When we first got our puppy (unexpectedly from a shelter), we drove here over a year ago, without a clue what we need. They guided us through their recommendations, provided vet recommendations (we love the one we tried), and gave us overall guidance on what to look for in the next few weeks given she was just coming from shelter life. Since then, we try to patron here when we can even though we've moved and have closer pet stores to us. They even spend time patiently saying hi to our dog, and have an excellent return policy. Some of them remember my dog even though we pop in irregularly and dote on her; those who don't still give her treats and pets. I didn't think a compact store like this could meet all my needs, but nine times out of ten if I'm looking for something, they have it at either a fair price or even on sale. Rhino's food was running low, and I typically get most of his food/treats from Pet Food Express, so I went on the website to see what my options were (due to Shelter in Place). They offered free SAME DAY shipping over 30 dollars, and 20% orders of 100 or more. While I was sad they didn't do buy 3 get 4 on the website, I placed an order with frozen JFFD amongst other things. Delivery was prompt, everything was packaged nicely, and the frozen food came in a freezer bag. I was so impressed, as I have been with EVERY single Pet Food Express I have been to. If getting married to a store was legal, this would be my spouse. But since our love affair must remain simply between one man and his beloved store, I can only resort to writing this review - and hope that my love is reciprocated. Seriously, though. This store is great. Staff is the best part, with the next best part being their selection of food and treats. We adopted a dog about 7 months ago, and they had everything we needed. Beds, collars, harnesses (not the Folsom Street Fair type, fellas), and all kinds of grooming apparatuses. Most importantly, they had great advice on what our new addition to the family would need - and not in a sales-person type of way, to make us buy a bunch of expensive stuff. Genuine, great advice. You can tell that they care about you and your Chewbarka. They have a bathing and grooming section in the back - we've only seen it, and haven't used it, as our canine companion joins us in the shower each morning. Kidding, our building has a dog grooming room. But if we didn't have that amenity, we'd be washing our Pup Tart here. We love having this store in the neighborhood, and it's made caring for and bonding with our Groucho Barks even easier. read more

They have a good amount of great food and treats for pets, toy and other things have a decent about of option but not a lot of variety. You can find great toys for pets but if you want more complex puzzles its probably better to look online. Places usually have more of that stuff online. read more

Great convenient location to wash our dog at bc they have a customer parking lot. Plenty of washing stations, excellent and friendly staff, nice amenities included while washing your pooch: fresh towels, nice selection of dog shampoos, aprons, dog treats, and durable wash/drying units. $15 to wash but it's well worth it bc saves you cleaning up the mess at home!! read more
