This review is describing my experience with everything pet bird related at this store: cage, food, toy selection; cleanliness and organization; and the worst part--that they sell birds. Not only do they sell birds, but they house the birds in a tiny, cramped, windowless room in tiny cages, with one fluorescent ceiling light and what appears to be no human interaction or fresh air or appropriate light. The room is about the size of my bedroom, and there are cages stacked to the ceiling full of birds, but the cages are tiny. Back when I didn't know any better in the '90s, I purchased two parrots from pet stores, as "hand-raised babies," but those stores had all the birds in appropriately sized cages with sunlight and lots of toys and out time with visitors if you sanitized your hands. They felt out the potential owners and didn't sell birds to just anyone. Now I know better, as I volunteer with a local parrot rescue that has to turn away hundreds of unwanted pet birds a year on top of the hundreds they take in. One of those volunteer duties is doing home visits for the adoption applicants, and one took me this week to near this store, and the applicant told me about it and showed me this terrible-looking seed mix they purchased there for pets. So I stopped by this store to see what/why they were selling, and the sad and crowded windowless bird-commodity room made me cry. I left in tears. I had first browsed the shelves for toys and food, and I found the shelves unorganized, out of stock on several items, and the floors dirty. Plus a cat running around. And the cages they were selling were all tiny as well. Here's something significant and equally emotional. Under "pets" on the front page of their website, they strongly encourage adopting from shelters for dogs and cats. SO WHY NOT BIRDS? Birds live longer, are more complicated, are often more intelligent and with more complex needs, and our rescues are overrun! WHY?!?! (Profit! And it's terrible.) This is their own words--why don't they believe this for birds??!! They should contact every rescue on the West Coast and find out how overrun we are. I used to come here often to purchase chicken food. I have a dog and cat and now that I have fish I thought I would drive further than pet store chain to patronize and small business since I spend so much money on my pets however I will not be returning. Two stars because my children and I love coming to pet stores. They have a nice fish section, reptiles birds but (though I'm have things I could say about how they're being kept). I purchased three fish and 2/3 died in two days of purchasing. I have an established tank and other fish alive and well. I never had to return fish before and these were just $3. It was important for my child to go after one had died less than 24 hours of purchasing. The store is not close to me but I had a little extra time. Even with receipt, picture of the dead fish and returning to the store in less than 24 hours, I was told I need the actual dead fish as well as water. I understand how people could scam but the fish was $3 and for the amount of money I spend on pets it doesn't seem like good business sense to enforce this asking me to drive all the way home for water and a dead fish. I write tonight because a second fish died in 48 hours. I will not be brining them the fish nor my business. I respect that employees were just following policy, they really wanted to show me a sign back in the fish section about their policy. I will pass and cut my losses. I understand people that work at pet stores usually love pets but I experienced one employee as overstepping boundaries with my shy puppy. There's alot I could say here but I hope this store does better with service and survives as an independent pet store so people have options but until I hear they do better, I will be returning. read more

I live in the other side of the bay but have been a happy customer of there's anytime I've been in the area. I've gotten chicks there and have always been happy with my experience. Yesterday I stopped by to buy and needed farmers turkey feed. They only had two bags but great I will get those. They were $33 a bag which whoa that's pricey but I couldn't remember how much we normally pay. They didn't have lamb feed that we needed so I went to one of our local pricey store today and the turkey feed is $17 there. Mikes has the worst mark up on that product. They have completely lost me as a customer. I highly advise people look at their farmers food prices and compare. Double the price is crazy. read more

Located in downtown San Leandro. Store is divided into pets and animal feed stock supply with the parking lot split between. Lots of employees offering assistance and very friendly. I think pricing, depending on the item, is cheaper than online. I would say, check the pricing when being rung up because when I was purchasing some chicken bedding, the sign said $8.99 but it showed up as ~$26. That was my only red flag because there is no display of pricing at the register and they just tell the customers the total. The sales associate asked me what type of pets I have and she threw in some samples for me to try. Will drop by in the future for chicks. read more

This pet shop has two different units, the two buildings separated by a parking lot right in between, convenient but confusing. Great service on both sides. In the main store, they offered plenty of products for all kinds of animals. I was able to pick up an apple stick hay feeder for my bunnies, while my partner purchased some eco earth for the tortoise. Pricey, but I appreciate the variety of items. I guess, so does the cat roaming the aisles. They also have numerous live animals in the back, birds, fish, turtles and other reptiles, as well as mice and small critters. In the other building, they had adorable ducklings for sale too, when we came by this past weekend. read more

Nice and clean when you first come in you can see a wide selection of various pet animal toys, the Service was quick . I got six feeders for my snakes with no problem I was in and out. And it wasn't that expensive it was a great price. The guy who helped me get my feeders was very knowledgeable about how many to feed per session. read more

Only been here once but what can I say? Their prices are high. While they claim the baby chicks are 90% female, one out of the 2 I purchased is a rooster. The electrolyte baggies I purchased for my baby chicks were 5 months expired. They do have a large selection but I doubt I will be back there again. read more

Super fun place to visit and buy pets! They have fishes, chicks, reptiles, and small animals up for sale! Their selection is great as well and staff members were kind! My elderly dad purchased two cockatiels here in the last few months after several visits. The staff is super helpful and Jason is the bird guy there, who is super knowledgeable about the birds. We bought all the supplies needed. The first one we bought was a female, and she is such a joy, my dad came back looking for a male cockatiel too. We got a male one that was hand-fed. The first one is super chill and the hand-fed male is so fun! He is so into people and adores my dad and 10 min after bringing him home, he was on my dad's shoulder and playing with the zipper on his vest! It appears to me that an employee in this business messages/harasses people who leave any negative reviews on here which I find a bit unprofessional. As a business, it is important to take criticism to further improve rather than harass customers with honest reviews. We're all adults here (at least some of us are..) and we're here to work together to make sure the customer satisfaction is there for all. I detailed and highlighted that their dog biscuits had maggots in them, which is very concerning. And it's been repeated a few times already that the customer service isn't there as most of the employees are more "annoyed" than caring about their job. If that's the truth, than I feel like it's something that you have to live to accept. read more

I've been going to Mike's for a long time to purchase cricket pet food for birds for cats and for dogs. As of late, Mike has been selling containers of dead crickets for full price. expired food and Sick animals . All while charging full price. In the future, I will definitely be going to East Bay Vivarium. Everything there is always fresh healthy, and alive. I also had an interaction with the manager, who told me that there was always dead and expired stuff in the store and was not willing to accommodate me. I will not be visiting Mike any longer and I would recommend that you don't either. read more

We got a male teddy bear hamster from this store since I heard they had a really good breeds. This store buys hamsters from Furball critters, a breeder that sells non-biting hamsters, which is located in Santa Cruz. Our hamster from this store is now 7 months old and he is healthy, friendly, smart and has no aggression. My kids made a really good bonding with him. Best hamster ever. Now we went back to get another hamster and we did not buy right away since we wanted to consider. Three days after we came back, the one we were looking at was already gone. They have a high turnover of animals which is a great sign. We also got bettas from this store and they are doing great too. The store has all the starter kits for new animals, and staffs are very helpful. read more

One of the popular local pet store that sells baby chicks! Since covid, we decided to raise some chicks. We got our first 5 chicks from here, which 3 turned out to be roosters, since they sell them straightrun. They have all the starter things to get started on raising chickens. We come here often to refill our laying hens feed and basically anything we need for our chickens. We had to let go of our roosters but this is by far my best laying hen, her name is Ginger and she is our Rhode Island Red. I also got an Australorp named Pepper. Love them to pieces. read more

First of all, my dad LOVES this store! He's a local (unlike my "tourist" self) and he shops here all the time to pick up crickets and other accessories for his mini zoo of frogs, newts, fish, and crabs. Mike's is a very nice, clean store with lots of options for your typical dog/cat/bird varieties and there's even a store cat you can pet and talk to while shopping. There are fish, reptiles, amphibians, and various other creatures for sale which will entertain both you and any children you bring with you! I, myself, have two cats back home and found some interesting grain-free treats I've never seen before as well as a treat-based training mat for cats -- it's difficult for me to find aids to train my cats (although they're exceptionally well behaved and come with called) so I was pleasantly surprised to find so many options here when it comes to cat training. The reason for the 4 and not 5 star review is two-fold. The two staff members helping with the fish were not terribly knowledgeable, they kept saying that the didn't know answers to questions that people were asking about certain fish. I find it 100% acceptable to say that you don't know something, especially when it comes to fish care, but then you should follow it up with information as to where the person can go to get answers (ie the manager, fish website, etc). The people asking the questions ended up getting frustrated and took the bag with the fish and set it back on top of the aquarium. The other issue I had was that when I tried to call the store the next day to ask a question, I was on hold for 45min without anyone answering or letting me know that I was there -- I ended up hanging up and not calling back. I agree with my dad -- this place is amazing! And I would go back and if I lived out here I would purchase all my pet needs from here, but they have a couple tiny things to work on, so give them some patience. read more

They deserve 5 stars, but the fact that they haven't worked out the hay and alfalfa situation with the city is frustrating. They can't sell bales of hay, straw, and alfalfa because the city won't let them store it outside? Something of that nature. Place is pretty well stocked and the peeps are very nice. I'm in there probably at least once a month and the off to Dublin to get my bales of straw and alfalfa. Would be way more convenient if I can get everything from them. read more

I went to Mikes Feed on Tuesday the 15th,2022. I was looking to get a hammy but I spotted a Guinea pig. I know a lot about Guinea pigs so when I brought my boy home,unlike petsmart,I can tell the employees at Mikes Feed have spent quality time with their animals. Roman (my Guinea pig) is very comfortable with humans already. He's such a kind and sweet big guy. I went home to examine him and he's in perfect shape and healthy for his age. His coat is beautiful and well taken care of. Also when I gave him a bath,for him to have been in a cage with another piggie,he had no cuts or marks on him. (Sometimes boars fight a lot to show dominance). Roman also wasn't as dirty as I thought he was. He only had hay remnants and hair falling off him. No smashed in pop in his fur,"black dots" (small pieces of poop) falling off him nor smashed in poop in his nails like other piggies had who I purchased from petsmart. So all and all I am happy with my purchase and I have a good feeling about Roman. I say that because unfortunately,guineas I have purchased from petsmart in the past all have died. I will never buy livestock ever again from petsmart. I brought Roman for my boy Sebastian. I purchased Sebastian from petsmart. Sebastian has been depressed every since his other cage mate died. Sebastian also developed a lump under his chin. So once again there's something wrong with another Guinea pig I have purchased from petsmart. I got Roman for Sebastian because if Sebastian ends up dying,at least he will have a friend before he goes. So far the boys are getting along so well (even tho Roman keeps humping Sebastian lol). They cuddle together and eat together. Roman has been trying to make Sebastian play with him but Sebastian is still closed in a little. As time goes on I know they will be great together. If Sebastian ends up passing,I definitely see myself going back to Mikes Feed to purchase a buddy for Roman. read more

It's 2 buildings and they have a parking lot between them! I've been here half a dozen times this summer visiting Kaycee's Dog Grooming and I like to visit the baby chicks. They are growing! Every time we've asked for assistance (which generally isn't offered), it has been professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Like the one time we asked about the chicken coops and the guy without being condescending said - "well, these are rabbit hutches, so let's go over to the chicken coops." When I finally have the nerve to get chickens - we will get them here. Until then, I can continue to desensitize myself to chirping and pecking by visiting the creatures here. read more

They have a lot of variety on live animals especially fish! I have bought fishes from them in 2 occasions, and sadly the guppies have died. I have never witnessed something like that. We bought endlers guppies,fancy guppies, and pea puffers. Everyone survived except the fancy guppies. My boyfriend and I have a 20 gallon two 10 gallons and a 2.5 gallon tanks we have bought many fishes through out the years and have raised many fry fish. The first time that this happened we didn't try to get a refund because we thought we probably did something wrong. On the second time we went to try to get store credit not a refund. But As soon as I started to explain what happened the employee shut me down by saying that is a 3 day policy. No where on the receipt or on their website has that policy. I continue to try to explain the situation and every time he would cut me off by saying that "there's something with the water". He repeated himself multiple times completely ignoring me. If there's something with the water why did all the other fishes survived on both occasions? I guess there's signs in the store with the 3 day policy, I didn't see anything. I felt completely ignored by the employee he was right I was wrong. I wished he would have just listened to what I wanted to explain. I told him I was told it was a 30 day return, but he said " there's no way anyone said that, all the employees have been working there over 2 years." I told him maybe it was a misunderstanding, I spent a lot of money both times that I have shopped there. Pretty much as a customer my story wasn't valued or true to the employee. I felt so belittled and as if I didn't know what I was doing. As if I was trying to get over on them. I work in retail my whole life, & customer service is #1. I sometimes come here for dog food and treats(most of the time I order online from Petco). Now I come here for chicken feed, treats and supplements. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone is masked and socially distanced. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars: Sadly, the one time I came here for a Buff Orpington, it died the next morning. When I got her, she seemed to be sick. I thought maybe that's just what a newly hatched chick is like. But nope, she was underdeveloped. The rest of mine were from Concord Feed in Livermore and they were all much more developed than her. When she died in the morning, I called Mike's to see what I should do with her. They do not do refunds. They said I should toss her into the trash and could come by again for another one. I decided to go to Concord Feed in Livermore for a Buff Orpington since they seem to manage their chicks better. I went to Mike's because it was only a couple blocks from my house. read more

This is the place where I get my chicken feed and for some reason every time I'm there I feel like I'm working with a bunch of 12-year-old kids that are just there walking around looking for something to do or on the phone or on their break, talking to the person behind the desk but yet no one wants to help me out when I'm there. It's pretty ridiculous with 3 or so people walking around with nothing to do, but don't wanna help us and then they give us attitude when we do ask for help. I like this place, but the customer service is horrible! it's obvious there needs to be an adult around to keep these kids in line because they are just kicking it with bad attitudes. read more

Stopped shopping there because their prices have gone up so much and their employees are almost surly when asked for help, then they get the order wrong because they aren't listening, and often don't even say thanks after you've spent $$$. Went there today out of desperation, and nothings changed, plus when I asked for the price on a product, again they didn't listen and tried charging it to me without giving me the price. But the kicker is they I told them 3 times what I needed from bulk, is four things so hard to remember? I got home to find they still got it wrong, and that's after I asked them at the at the sales counter if the amounts were correct. Great staff and reasonable prices. We buy orijen for our lab puppy and the 25# bag is about $84 versus pet food express down the street it's about $95. The staff is super helpful and open to special ordering items they don't have if you ask. They did this when I asked for the small breed orijen and they didn't have it in their inventory. They have buy 3 get the 4th free for treats and toys and started a frequent buyer program for dog foods which includes Orijen! read more

The staff here has always been very welcoming & helpful. It's really hard to find quality chicken feed in the Bay I was sooo happy when I found this place. My hens are very spoiled and will get ~very~ cranky if I give them any other feed. It's also pretty tough to find pet stores that cater to non-"normal" pets like chickens and ducks and whatnot. I love all of the options I have for my babies, loved the quality and pricing of the hay for my guinea pigs, also love love love those big buffalo bones for dogs. Amaaaaazing for the price my dog destroys everything within minutes but enjoys those bones for days. I haven't bought a chick from here yet but I do have plans to! they look healthy and well taken cared of, when i'm ready to expand the fam this is where i'm coming. + Parking is pretty easy, they have a small lot in between the locations. read more
