My husband and I adopted two kittens here a few days ago. As soon as we walked in the staff kindly greeted us and told us the layout. There were 4 rooms of kittens. They said we could get any kitten out to meet them just don't put them on the floor. We made 2 laps looking at everyone. So many sweet babies to pick from and we were looking for particular personalities. Once we picked two the staff checked the medical records to make sure they were currently due for anything before we left. Because it's currently kitten season and they have a ton of kittens, all kittens were half off. So we got two for $175. Already fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. The facility was very clean, easy to find, and professionally ran. It was a great experience. As we left there was a family with kids that came to read books to the kittens, so sweet! read more

I brought in the girls I nanny to visit the shelter. We didn't call ahead or anything. When we 2alked in the front desk clerk was so nice and offered us a tour right then. She took her time to explain all different aspects of the shelter and taught the girls about the ways they care for animals there. I was very impressed and so pleased with experience the girls had visiting. I've heard others mention that it can be expensive to adopt from this shelter, but after touring and seeing all that goes into a no kill shelter, I think they have those prices to sustain their goal of rescuing as many animals as possible. We learned about kitten fostering while we were there, and I hope to participate in that program in the future. read more

My daughter had a summer camp here this year (Hairy Pawter) and I got to bring her every day. She had a blast during the camp, but she especially loved being able to play with the kittens / cats prior to her camp each day. It's great to see them all so well cared for, and even better when I see families leaving with a new pet. We already have three cats at home, so taking home another one was not an option, but we sure gave them some loving. Cats and dogs are well cared for here. They also had some Guinea pigs that were quite vocal if you got close enough. I recommend fostering or adopting from here if you ever have the chance. In July of 2020, we adopted a 4 month old black kitten named Dodge from Pet Helpers. You can tell how much the staff cares for the animals when a kitten, who was described as "shy", was almost immediately confident and trusting in our home. He transitioned well to his new environment and family because all he has ever known was kindness and love from the staff at Pet Helpers. The staff educated us, answered our questions, gave great suggestions, and Dodge came with a coupon for his first vet appointment. I want to thank Pet Helpers for introducing us to our fuzzy baby. He now has a life full of love, wet food, play time and unlimited chin scritches. He's bonded with my husband and runs to greet him when he comes home from work every day. I contacted this place to take in a cat that appeared at my house. I was told to send an email to the intake person so they would let me know when they had availability to take the cat. I waited a week and never heard anything. So I emailed inquiring. They emailed back said they were still waiting for an opening. So today I get an email telling me they have an opening for this cat. Before I tell my story I will first say that I would never tell anyone not to go to a shelter! pet helpers helps so many animals and that is amazing! But my story needs to be told to be sure it doesn't happen to anyone else! I met a puppy and my daughter and I both fell in love. I was allowed to foster and completed all necessary paperwork. I was told from day one that I would be able to adopt as soon as he was neutered. On the day of his surgery I had had him for over 2 weeks and when i submitted my adoption application the day I dropped him off for his scheduled surgery. I called and called throughout that day to check on him and no one answered the phone. I received a voicemail from the director and attempted to return her call multiple times. No answer and no return call. I went there to find out the puppy had been given away to someone else. This was a heart breaking situation. And very wrong! I hope this never happens ever again! read more

I have now adopted 3 animals from Pet Helpers and I couldn't be happier. The people who work there could not be nicer and more helpful with the adoption process. We fostered our puppy from them before deciding to keep him and they made the transfer process from foster to parent seamless. The way they set up fostering is excellent too, providing all the supplies you would possibly need to take care of the animals when they're in your care and checking in to see how they're doing. As a volunteer and someone who has adopted from the shelter, I cannot say enough GOOD about what the shelter does for the animals and what the staff do. My opinion about the POLITICS that go on behind the scenes, specifically with regards to the board and how it is run is completely not the same. So posting a rating here is very difficult. I started volunteering in November 2015 to help the shelter animals. The bottom line for all employees and staff are the animals. The facilities are very, very clean and well-maintained. The utmost care is taken for every cat and dog. The services are well thought out and varied as far as what is provided for the animals and the adopters. The adoption process to adopt is very streamlined and great care is taken to look into the background of every potential doctor. The paperwork and documents are straightforward and easy to fill out. Again, the bottom line will always be for the best interest of the animals, and not always for the staff (the humans who do the actual work). There is a spay neuter clinic attached to the main shelter which offers the basics: Spain, neutering, shots, de-worming and heart worm meds , and microchips. The staff, doctors and technicians there are all excellent. This is a limited vet clinic, and is not a laboratory offering full spectrum services. The cost can vary, but are very reasonable, and depending on whether or not there is a special, can be extremely affordable. There is a retail store that offers a wide variety of cat kitten, dog puppy products as well as some human items. Everything in the store is tax-free! Profits made from the retail store go directly to wards helping the shelter's animals. By the time I left in May of 2016, I had donated nearly 440 hours of my time managing this store. There is an extensive volunteer program, for all ages and types of people,and a wide variety of volunteer positions available. I found the process of applying and becoming a volunteer to be fairly easy, but getting a reply and actually starting was a bit frustrating. The parking situation can be annoying at peak times, and getting off and on Folly Road during high traffic hours is also challenging. If you are looking to volunteer, this is a good place to do so. They offer a variety of positions from building outdoor enclosures, office work, kennel clean up, animal cuddling, retail store work etc. The current volunteer coordinator is excellent at her job. If you are looking to make monetary donations, again, a great shelter that really does make a positive impact in the lives of many, many animals. I am unimpressed at the lack of open and frank communication between the board and the staff and volunteers. I am unimpressed at the lack of transparency when it comes to reasons and motivations behind the board's decisions when running a non-profit. I question the high rate of staff and volunteer turnover. I don't think that humanitarian organization applies to the way they treat their humans. read more

I just got my dog spayed there and am so glad that I took her here instead of spending hundreds of dollars more at my vet. It cost next to nothing to get her procedure taken care of, and the staff was very friendly. My poor pup is still hurting from the spay, as it just happened yesterday, but I am so glad they offered pain meds for her as well. The only thing is, I wish they provided her with the Elizabethan collar (the cone collar) to get her to stop licking herself.. I thought that would be a given. They participate in a county-funded program, which allows them to provide many of the feral cat services for free or at very low cost. The other services they offer were also reasonably priced. The cleanliness and orderliness of the facility immediately stood out. So I am reviewing Pet Helper's spay/ neuter clinic- Greer, which I found on the Pet Helper's website. I had been wanting to get my French bulldog spayed for a while but my vet was very pricy. I read good things about Greer and their prices were very reasonable so I finally set something up. I was very satisfied! The clinic is really clean, the procedure was done by noon on a Thursday, pain medication was very cheap, and my Benny healed up so well. Her incision looks really clean and she was back to normal in no time. I really appreciate clinics like this who spay and neuter at low costs. We have been here twice now looking at cats. The staff has been very friendly and inviting. They are able to answer any and all questions we have had about animals there or just in general. If you are looking to adopt, there is a personality just waiting to love you. We only viewed the cats with a toddler but they have dogs too. I have never been to a place so clean and with so much room for the animals. All food bowls were full, all the drinking bowls had clean fresh water, plenty of sleeping room and privacy areas for the animals. The set up allows the cats to choose to interact with you or not. I surrendered a hunting dog to them on April 13, 2021 I had rescued and cared for for eight months I named Toby. He was neutered, chipped, vaccinated and heart worm negative. After I left him there and paid them $100.00. I checked on him a few days later and saw how devastated he looked. I emailed and phoned them numerous times with concerns but they ignored them. I offered to come back and get him and they said I would have to submit an adoption application so I did on the evening of May 7th. They told me he had been adopted that morning, but later I found out they lied and it was the eighth that he was supposedly adopted. I went to the website and saw the adoption picture. The adopter looked like one of their employees. The "Happy Ending Update" was taken at the facility and a complete fabrication. They just used Toby to solicit donations. When I publicaly protested their lawyer, STEPHAN V FUTERAL OF FUTERAL AND NELSON IN Mt.Pleasant, served me with a lawsuit for libel and slander and now they are trying to throw me in jail for contempt of court. They are not what they pretend to be. They are just a greedy corporation making money off the misery of people and their pets. It's been a heartbreaking ordeal for both my dog Toby and me. read more

be very careful when getting an animal from this place. i got my kitten around 2 months ago and was told he was completely healthy and was so happy and excited. keep in mind i'm a 19 year old college student. once he was brought home he was taken to the vet to just make sure he was ok. we were then told he had a upper respiratory infection and ringworm. thankfully they were able to treat but now a month later he has been diagnosed with a double ear infection and an internal parasite which he's had since he was rescued and just wasn't showing signs until now. thanks fully my parents r helping me pay but i have spent nearly $3,000 on his vet bills. i love him and am so happy i'm able to give him the treatment he needs but the shelter failed to tell me all the issues he had, (keep in mind they were all written on the vet records that i received, but they told me he was healthy and until i adopted him i wasn't given the records). just be careful if you are a college student with limited funds this shelter lies to you abt the health of the animal just to get it adopted. They were aware of the illnesses he had but did not inform me at all. also we have two other cats that could've contacted all the diseases he has but thankfully didn't. be very careful and chose another shelter unless you want to drop a couple thousand because you were lied too. read more

I recently took my dog to Pet Helpers for surgery and was impressed by the amount of professionalism and couretsy I experienced through each step of care, from scheduling the appointment to follow-up care post surgery. The staff was very friendly and enthusiastic in meeting my dog, though admittadly my dog has some behavioral issues I'm trying to work through, and made me feel like they truly care about him as if he were their favorite dog. There's a Pedigree dog food commercial on tv right now that makes me want to cry because it's about dogs in animal shelters who don't know how they ended up there. Places like Pet Helpers do such amazingly good work. They provide a refuge for animals who otherwise wouldn't have a place to go, and since it's a no-kill shelter, the animals can stay as long as they need to. They deleted my post from 2012, but I see older. How convenient. This is the WORST place to take your pet. I brought my Lab in for spay and it was a horrible experience for my dog and me. Not only did they charge me an additional $25.00 dollars for my dog being 'overweight' (she was 85 lbs at the time and in the normal range), but they also used TOO much medicine on her. She stayed overnight, but the next morning when we picked her up, she was so doped up she couldn't see, couldn't recognize us, couldn't follow simple commands, etc. She was also whimpering constantly. I will NEVER, EVER recommend this place. read more

My name is Leona and my partner Matthew and I adopted a sweet terrier mix named Templeton (later changed to Hank) just about two weeks ago. We want to write you to tell you how thankful we are to Pethelpers for the gift of having Hank in our lives! About six weeks ago we had adopted a different dog from a shelter that shall not be named. We were so happy at the time of this adoption because we had been looking for a dog to adopt for nearly two years! My partner has some allergies to dogs so finding the right breed at a shelter was becoming a bit of a challenge for us. Unfortunately, we only had this other dog for two days before he became violently ill. When we took him in for his post shelter check up we found out that the poor dog was dehydrated, had worms, a respiratory problem, and if you can believe it- parvo virus. He stayed at the vet for almost a week and I'm very sad to say that unfortunately he did make it... Matthew and I were so devastated after this traumatizing experience. We were so sad over the loss of this dog, I didn't know if we'd ever find another pup for our family. THANKFULLY we found Mr. Hank and he has just brought so much joy into our lives! We think the feeling is mutual. :) He has been going to the office with Matthew, knows his new name, and has learned how to sit! He enjoys playing fetch in the dog parks and bonding with other dogs. Going to Pethelpers was like night and day to us compared to the other shelter. Everyone working there (hey Judy and Tiffany!) was so knowledgeable and friendly-they made this experience one we will never forget! They even took the time to go over his medical history and called us recently to see how he was doing. It was like a breath of fresh air. We took Hank to the vet a few days after bringing him home and he's healthy (whew, huge sigh of relief)!! We are so happy in our little family and it's all thanks to you! read more

I have rescued a number of stray cats and their kittens, and asked to have them placed at Pet Helpers for adoption. I was turned down as the cats were "semi-feral", in spite of the fact that they had adjusted well to indoor life. In the past I have inquired about placing an animal, and was turned down as they "had no space". The word on the street is that you have to tell them you found the animal on Folly Beach to get it placed with them. I am grateful if they are able to save any animals from abuse or unnecessary euthanasia, but I get the impression they are more of a private club that caters only to a select few. I didn't necessarily use the adoption center, but I did get puppy shots from the spay/neuter clinic! I am so pleased with the level of service! My boyfriend and I recently got a Great Pyrenees puppy, and we knew we needed to get all of his puppy shots. Not only was the PetHelpers staff knowledgeable, but also extremely friendly! You can tell they really love and care for each pet that walks through the door! The whole experience look a total of 10 minutes; it was quick, painless, and an all-around great experience!
