I want to share a disturbing experience we recently had with Pet Island. My dog vomited after chewing on an American Pet 6" Bully Flosser I bought from them. Soon after, I noticed several worms on my floor and wool carpet. I immediately took the stick away and found it was crawling with worms. During that same purchase, I also bought a bag of ACANA CHEWY TENDERS, which the staff had recommended. After discovering the worms in the bully stick, I checked the package of treats and saw that the Best Before Date was 17/11/2024. Considering I bought it on the evening of 11/14, that only gave us three days to use the product before it expired! While it's possible that the staff were unaware of the issue with the bully stick, knowingly selling a product with such a short shelf life is unacceptable. I went back to the store to request a full refund for both items, but the staff/owner refused. They argued that the treats were still fine because a large dog could finish them in a single day and mentioned that since I bought them at a 50% discount, I should bear the responsibility. What upset me the most was their complete lack of concern--they didn't apologize for the worms or even ask if my dog was okay after chewing on the infested stick. Their cold attitude toward animals and rude behavior left me very disappointed. For us, it's not about the money; it's about being a responsible retailer. If you shop there, please be vigilant and thoroughly check any products before giving them to your pets! I prefer supporting small local businesses over big-box stores, but this experience has made me rethink that choice. read more

I like this store a lot. It's small and kind of cramped but they manage to stock everything I need for my dog and my small rodent (hamster). They also have a cute kitten. Prices are fair and they offer sales every so often. Staff is very nice too. read more

I had a wonderful experience here earlier tonight! I just adopted a cat and was looking for a place nearby my friend's apt, and she recommended this place. I called and found out they close at 8:30pm, but the owner kindly said he could stay for additional 15 minutes. I ended up being there until a little after 9pm, and he always said take your time and don't rush! That was super nice of him, and I really appreciated his help! :) I have limited experience with cats so I was looking around the entire place for options for treats, litter, food, cat bed, scratching post, etc and everything was available with many options! I chose out of many options that he showed me, and he even helped me carry out litter and scratching post to the uber. The customer service here is top notch! I'd definitely recommend to check it out for any of your pet needs. The cat I had was eating Friskies, and he kindly told me that it's not great quality. My friend confirmed this by saying it's like McDonald's for cats, a lot of fillers and not nutritious. So I picked out other healthier, quality options with his help. I waited to for a year to give this review. I have to say, Pet Island is our dog Riley's Happy Place. When we are out for a walk, and anywhere nearby, Riley will drag us into this store. Pet Island is such a gem. I stopped in when I first moved to LIC in September and was excited to see they carried such a great selection - especially Primal frozen food. I started ordering delivery as it got colder and the lovely gentleman at the store remembered me when I called in - great service! When I ordered this week, he sent a toy along for my cat, who is now his biggest fan. Delivery was super fast and just perfect. Love finding stores like this. I work in the area so usually on my way home- I stop by this store to pick up little things for my dog. This store is small but it has a lot of items. There is this beef patty thing where I crumble up and mix it with dry dog food. I searched everywhere including petco and petsmart but they didn't have it. They told me I have to order it online. I happened to come by this place and I saw it in stock here!!! Also the man (owner?) is so sweet. It was my dogs birthday in September and I was looking for a cake. They unfortunately didn't have a cake but the man gave me free bones to give to my dog for his birthday. I thought that was really sweet and compassionate. They also have a really cute cat that they keep in the store. I love animals so I sometimes stop by just to say hi to the cat. Overall, this place is a good local pet store that I rely on to find things for my dog. Highly recommend if you're in the area! read more

I just love this place. The people who work there are incredibly friendly and clearly care about their customers and their pets. I've been going to Pet Island since they opened, and I haven't been to another pet store since. I get all of my cat food and supplies there, and if they don't have something you want, they'll order it. The prices are very reasonable, and they offer free delivery. Super convenient location right off the 7 train. Maybe my favorite part about Pet Island is their resident cat, Lisa. She's adorable and is often willing to let you give her some love. Yelp doesn't let me give 0 stars, the least is 1. This deservers NO stars. This place is awful. AVOID ORDERING FROM THEM IF ITEM IS NOT IN STOCK! This place will go out of its way to persuade you to order anything they do not carry in stock. They promise to "match" the cheapest price but that is a lie. These people agreed to order a brand of dog food for me and promised to sell it to me at a good/fair price because they need the business. I asked for a quote and they said they could not give a quote because they "do not know" (dog food should be something that they are experts on- at least competitive pricing). I was hesitant to order and almost walked away, but the guy tapped my shoulder and said, "don't worry about price, we take care of you and match to the cheapest price (i was paying $35 for a box of 12 cans). When order came in, they charged me $55 dollars!!!! I argued with them as they backed down from their promise of giving me a competitive or match price. Please go somewhere else. This place gets no foot traffic- and the fact that they weren't smart enough to offer to me a "good price" shows that they are bad at business. What a shame. They lost a customer that would have ordered 2x a moth. If they sold to me for $40 or even $45...they would have made $90 a month from me...not smart! Now they get nothing. read more

Our go-to pet store now that Coral in Jackson Heights has (tragically) closed. They have a great selection of cat food, treats and toys; the staff is super friendly; and Lisa the store cat keeps everything under control! A little out of the way for us, but totally worth the trip. read more

I called ahead to ask if they had any flea and tick shampoos in stock and was told they do indeed have it so I decided to make the trip over given it's urgent. Once i got there I was handed the bottle and quickly left the store to rush home to my dog. On my way out, I noticed the employee handed me a flea and bite RELIEF AFTER BATH TREATMENT so I immediately went back in to ask for an exchange. I was then told that they don't have any flea and tick shampoos in stock AND they are not able to return the wrong bottle I was handed. Instead, the employee said it was my fault for not checking the bottle that he specifically put into my hands. I am beyond disappointed with the level of service. Not only did they give me the wrong information when I initially called, they then handed me the wrong bottle and blamed me for not double checking. I am coming to your store asking for you recommendation and relying on your expertise. I am now left with a useless bottle of AFTER BATH relief treatment that I cannot return. read more

Randomly stumbled upon this little gem over the weekend. Very friendly staff and decent prices, not the cheapest but more affordable than pet land discount. I buy blue buffalo for my puppy and they have a buy 10 Get 1 free if you buy by the case (both wet and dry food). They also have a great return policy on dog clothes so if it doesn't fit you can bring it back no questions asked. The cashier was very helpful in helping me get a harness that fit my dog and a rain coat, he also suggested a great bully stick that my puppy loved! They offer free delivery and in some cases the cashier said it can even be same day. I will def be supporting this small business. read more

I adore this place almost as much as my dog. They have very flexible hours and pretty much any treat, food, toy, or raw-hide you could want. Every time I come in with the pup they always give him a special treat, and they usually throw in a little something extra on pricier trips. Prices are also very fair! I love this pet store and their employees! They always have what I need or are able to order it quickly. The employees and management are knowledgeable about cat food and the needs of my cats. They have a great selection of toys and treats and they already know what I'm looking for when I walk in. They remember which foods I've tried in the past and listen when I explain how what didn't work out. Working with them I've been able to find the perfect food for my cats throughout various life stages. Another little perk is that they often send along a free toy or snack when I checkout. They always ask me if I'd l Iike them to deliver my purchases since it's often a couple different bags of food plus other things which is very thoughtful. I was already committed to Pet Island but I must say that they've been extra helpful and kind during the NYC PAUSE for Covid-19. I'm immunocompromised so I've limited my time out and whenever I need cat food all I have to do is give them a call and they have all my info on file and they deliver the same day. They know what I'm looking for when I explain the random treats and toys I need as well. My boyfriend and I took our pup on his first walk this past Sunday after he got his booster shots, and headed to Pet Island to see if we could find any dry food that our finicky little eater would like. I asked the owner if he has any dry food we could sample, and he gave me a sample from one of his distributors. Oliver loved it, but when we went to grab a big bag of it, the flavor was not yet available for sale. The owner called his other store to see if they had it (they didn't have it yet either), and then insisted on ordering it for us and offered us all of the samples he had. He also helped us out with recommendations for shampoos, wet foods, etc. Lastly, when we saw Oliver sniffing around, we asked for a wee pad, and were given one without hesitation. True to form, he missed the pad completely, but the owner immediately grabbed a mop, cleaned it up, and told us not to worry. All in all, great customer service, good prices from what I can tell, and good selection for a small store (at least compared to the major chains). Oh, and they deliver! read more

Previously, I wrote a yelp review for Happy Feet in Murray Hill and now Pet Island is part of our community in LIC and is the brother/sister/cousin store of Happy Feet. I got very lucky when they opened shop just a block away from me. I run a cat sitting & boarding business and I can always depend on Pet Island to order anything I need for my clients' pets or for my own. Antony, George and Jimmy are friendly, warm people, and beyond helpful. I highly recommend them. Oh and by the way, even if you don't have a pet, I strongly urge all animals lovers to go in, just to visit their gorgeous resident feline Lisa. Lisa is a real character. She will sit on the counter and paw at Jimmy over & over while he's using the register and bagging products. Like any self respecting cat, Lisa demands all the attention for herself and is hilarious to watch. I have actually seen customers literally laughing out loud around the checkout, waiting in line while Lisa tried to break Jimmy's concentration and usurp all his attention. They were able to order me the cat food I used to have to get a prescription for at the vet (extortionist?)'s office, and even offered to deliver. They also carry World's Best cat littler, which is just that. I love that the place is stuffed to the ceiling with pet food and toys and that they have a store cat.
