This review is for Vetco Clinic, and it's my first pet-parent review of the New Year. If you're like me and your fur baby is truly family, then you already know you want to take care of them as such. But let's be real--vet visits are expensive these days, and I needed to get my guy Boomer his shots and a little wellness check without it turning into a whole financial event. So I started looking for an affordable clinic, and a lot of places claim they're affordable... and then you get there and the prices are not giving "affordable" at all. I made an appointment with Vetco Clinic, and I went to the one on 86th and Lexington because it's closest to me. Booking online was super easy, and I was able to get a same-day appointment, which I loved. When I got there, I was honestly surprised--in the best way--because it really wasn't expensive. They even give you a 20% coupon when you sign up to go, so you can use that discount right away, which is a nice bonus. Boomer got three shots and my total was $80. And the guy in front of me was last minute trying to get his baby ready for boarding, and she needed like five or six shots, and his total was $149... and that's before even thinking about the 20% discount. For New York? That is genuinely great. But beyond the price, the vets and staff were really sweet. Boomer is a rescue, so he's a little squeamish and very big on energy and who's handling him, and he didn't give them any issues at all. They did the shots so quick and smooth, he wasn't in pain, he wasn't drowsy afterwards, and you can tell they actually care about the pets they're seeing. And that matters to me because he's my baby--my first son--so I'm always paying attention to how people treat him. It was quick, simple, easy, and most importantly affordable. They were also open to questions, so if you need to ask about medications, flea and tick prevention, food, anything--they'll talk to you and help without making you feel rushed. I highly recommend Vetco Clinic if you're trying to keep up with your pet's care without it costing you an arm and a leg. We need affordable options, and this one really came through. read more

I am extremely disappointed with Petco's customer service and lack of accountability. After an incident at the store, I was repeatedly told that a district manager would contact me to address the situation. It has now been several months, and no one has reached out -- not even once. Being told multiple times that someone would call, only for that never to happen, feels dishonest and dismissive. As a customer, I expected transparency and follow-through, especially from a large company like Petco. The two apparently incompetent employees did not finish with even one customer in the 10+ minutes I waited. The line got longer & longer and they didn't care. The disrespect I have encountered today by staff was so inappropriate and unprofessional. I had an appointment to have my dogs nail cut, ended up at the lex ave location because that is where I have taken my dog to get her nails done before. The person who was taking my dogs info down explained that I was at the wrong location. I believed it was there; however it was an appointment made for a different location. Granted, I asked if we can still get serviced....the two employees there could not decide who wanted to do the job. They continued to ask and I continued to say to say it did not matter. One staff has their name tag upside down, I asked if it could be fixed because I do like to address ppl by their names, fine that wasent an issue the staff actually smiled as if they were not aware it was upside down. After, Andrea (who I was not aware was transgender until after the fact) came out, placed a leash around my dog and for some strange reason, kneeled on the floor and appeared to be touching my dogs paws repeatedly as if she was going to give them an issue. Same with the second employee, now I notice everything is just off, so I asked if there is an issue because my dogs been here before and I never received this service, with all this confusion and energy that I am receiving, leaving me to feel Like no one wanted to do the service, I began to worry. When I made the comment the young lady seemed annoyed by my question, stood up and attempted to walk my dog in with the leash that was not placed on properly. When I asked if she can fix it she said with a rude tone that "it did not matter". She continued, now I worry because I don't not want anyone taking anger out on my dog. I explained that if they're assuming because my dog is a Frenchie that she is mean, she is just a year old and feeling anxious towards strangers who continue to touch her but she is in fact a friendly dog, and also mentioned that she has been there before and they have just placed her on the table and done her nails without a problem. Completely ignored me, walked away. As she cut the other employees seemed annoyed that I was watching them by the glass and rolled their eyes, mumbled under their breathe etc Soon after, both stepped out, as I was waiting for my receipt she looked me directing my eyes & said " if you want to come back here you better not call anyone sir". Caught me off guard because at no time I called anyone sir, I asked who are you referring to and why are you speaking to me in this tone. It appeared that the other employees who identifies themselves as a female, was offended when I asked if they can turn the tag around so I can address my conversation with a name instead she made it seem as if I was intentional calling her sir purposely with bad intent.... As much as I tried to explain the mis communication the employee young lady continued to be disrespectful and unprofessional. When asked to speak to a supervisor she said "I am the supervisor Fernanda" I kindly told her how unprofessional she is and walked away. The manager is an absolute horror. A rude condescending self righteous nightmare. I've owned a full aquarium fur 30 years and she's there trying to tell me how to treat my fish. I wouldn't fire her, but she needs training and should never be allowed to engage with customers. I have been shopping in this Petco location since the store opened. Many years ago, a manager overstepped boundaries, causing the death of several cats on the premises. This manager was fired, and there has been acceptable service since, although there is a significant staff turnover, which must rest with the fault of Petco. This afternoon, I, as a white male in his late 70s, was subject to blatant racist behaviour by a young black female cashier, whom I have never previously seen, by the name of Kaileana. Petco put its customers' well-being at risk by not screening its employees for their suitability to work with the public. There was no manager present to address the situation. I purchased an injured parakeet/budgie on 4/5/2021 from the Petco on 1280 Lexington Ave New York, NY 10028. I asked the associates there why the bird was on the base of the floor huddled in a corner with a bald patch on its head, and they said, "oh travel." They also told me that the bird got here an hour ago. I ended up taking the bird home because of the poor conditions at Petco and because I didn't think the bird will stand a chance getting purchased. It was already by itself on the cage floor. Upon coming home, I noticed the bird had splayed legs and a dirty vent (it cannot poop normally), and it is unable to move about in the cage without assistance. Due to this, we asked Petco for a 100% refund. We also absolutely refuse to return the bird with uncertainty about what kind of condition Petco is providing for these animals. Additionally, why would the store put an injured bird in the parakeet cage for sale? Clearly, something was not right because the bird was on the cage floor with a missing patch of feathers on its head. When I called the store today (04/06/2021) at around 9:40am and asked to speak to the manager, the woman (who said she is the manager) said that I would have to return the bird so that the bird can see Petco's vet, and then REPURCHASE the bird again once "it's well." She said it was in the back of the receipt. Well, I have attached the back of the receipt to this review and don't see anything that outlines what she said. I find it absolutely outrageous because not only is the bird already injured but how do I even know it'll get proper care from Petco's vet or any care at all? Why would you put a bird on the sales floor when clearly it's not well? And then you force customers to repurchase an injured bird AGAIN and get double the profit for treating the animals like trash to begin with? Awful. This Petco location is terrible and I advise for you to stay away. I have reported them already to the Humane Society and PETA. Also, rest assured, we are keeping our bird safe at our home with our other budgie, and having him be seen at our avian vet. read more

Showed up at 8:45pm on 7/4/23 when they close at 9pm - the sign on the door says they are open until 9pm- but when I showed up all the doors were locked. SEVERAL employees saw me and two other women knocking on the door and would not come to us. They made a gesture as if they were closed - 15 full minutes before they actually were supposed to be. The women I was with had a dog food order that had been confirmed for her to pick up by 9pm. There were four employees total that completely ignored us, refused to answer the phone or acknowledge us and then came out of the front door at 8:56pm. They intimidated us and all 4 of them came at one small women with her dog, of which I have a video and will be sending to higher management. Absolutely insane to ignore multiple customers and their dogs when we could have been in and out before they closed. And on the 4th of July when many animals are spooked by the fireworks. I was in a last ditch effort as my cat decided to be picky. I ordered Wellness Chicken smooth Pate from other competitors and the expiration date was Jan. 2026 and April 2026. My cat will only eat at this point Wellness may for Feb. 14, 2026 expiration. I called the store and they had some inventory. Kate was Incredible. She said that she would hold the inventory for me. I got there less then half an hour later and true to her word she had the Wellness for me. She was Wonderful and she tried her hardest to make sure that my cat would be eating until I could figure out what to do. No one else has the Feb. 14, 2026 expiration date. Incredible. I brought my dogs here for vaccinations. All the required vaccinations and a heart worm test including rabies vaccine cost me ~$110. It's cheaper than the vet but I was waiting around 2 1/2 hours. Even if you get there early it doesn't help unless you get there around 30 min early because 20 min after they started the line was SO LONG. They also give a free exam with that price. The dr that was there was Amazing. The employees at the store were bad mouthing her saying she's doing to much of an in detail exam on dogs but dr. Yang was worth the long wait and she gave some really good advise and picked up a few things my regular vet never mentioned. She even picked up a heart murmur on the dog behind us! She was very gentle and caring. Staff is sweet despite them being upset people were waiting so long but they offered free water and even helped me sort through the mass amount of paperwork to determine which vaccines were due and educated us on optional vaccinations. The store itself is good. Majority of the stuff is overpriced and can be purchased on amazon for half the price but there are some things like huge squeaky toys that are expensive online but we're buy one get one 50% off. I also recommend the cookies by the pound as my dogs love them! Despite being in the store a total of 3 hours it was a great experience. If you don't have patience get there 30-40 min early and get in line. read more

We took our poodle in for a shampoo with an added treatment that included pedicure and lavender shampoo. The staff were pleasant and professional, but lacked the warmth of a private groomer. I get it: this is a large chain, and procedures and policies dictate behavior as much as anything else. His coat was fresh and brushed out. No problem with that, either. Our issue was that one of his nail shells was broken and actually bleeding. We had to clean it up when we got home. I called up and spoke with the staff member sitting at the grooming desk. She told me that it was impossible, that had he been bleeding, they would have medicated it immediately to stop the bleeding. Then she suggested that he wounded his nail on the walk from Petco to our home. I didn't call asking for anything, but I did want to see if they would own their error. They did not. Won't go again. However, we came in meeting Neil, who had to be an angel from puppy heaven. He was so knowledgable about labradors in general and his recommendations for treats, chew toys, food and medical tips were GREAT! I will forever be a customer here and work with Neil to make sure we keep Nash healthy and happy along with his vet visits. I came here quite a few times when I was in the area recently to pick up supplies for my pet Guinea Pig. They had pretty much everything that I needed including toys, hay, some bedding and treats, even small animal nail clippers. The prices are slightly more expensive than what I am used to paying but they do have an excellent location. One associate in particular was very helpful in finding the appropriate products for Snickers. He went way out of his way to show me the different products available and was very helpful. I was also very glad that they are accepting donations. I recently had some food and bedding that I wasn't going to use and I wanted it to go to a good home. I'm glad that it will be used!! I had such a lovely experience here today. I'm a new dog owner who just adopted a rescue about three weeks ago. I had my introduction to Petco when I went to pick up my dog (from Louie's Legacy rescue) at the Petco in Richmond Ave in Staten Island. That particular Petco was a superstore with everything I needed and I've loved Petco ever since. I live on the UES and had to exchange a plastic kennel that I bought from my first Petco visit in Staten Island. I stupidly had thrown out the receipt and for some reason customer service didn't have the purchase linked to my Pals reward card, but they assured me it would not be a problem to exchange. I have to admit, I was a bit worried because I've had bad experiences at other retailers when I had no receipt. When I went to the store, the employees at Petco immediately put me at ease and told me it would be no problem to exchange. Malinda in particular gave me an awesome experience checking out, hassle free, with a great attitude and positive energy. I got the feeling she and the other employees here really care about customers and pets. Truly an ideal place to shop. I came here to pick up an order of dog food that I had received an email saying was ready. I arrived at the store a little before 8:40pm and their sign stated closing time 9pm which I didn't think would be an issue since it's a pick up order, there's nothing to spend time on they would just have to hand me the bag from the counter and I'd be on my way. There were about 5 other people outside who also wanted to grab an item quickly since they were supposed to close at 9pm. However when I arrived the doors were already locked and the employees inside had seen us outside but were blatantly ignoring us, at one point even laughing and walking away. There were a total of 4 employees. As they were getting ready to leave the store me and one remaining customer outside asked why they would not let us in when they were supposed to be open and the employees pointed to a NON EXISTENT sign in an attempt to say they had posted that they were closing early today even though the sign they actually pointed to said "Cat Adoptions 1-5pm Sundays" with nothing about early closings anywhere. Now, I had traveled from Midtown on the West side with my dog to pick up her food so she wouldn't starve so I tried to reason with them and was standing in front of them when my dog tried to get into the store and one of the employees quickly grabbed her by the THROAT and pushed her out. Following this, another employee forcibly pushed me out of their way with their body weight, which must have been at least twice mine, to which I pushed her/them back in defense. They immediately swung at my head with their GIANT BOTTLE causing my ear to bleed and my piercing to literally tear through a chunk of cartilage. I have NEVER experienced something like this before and was in shock but will definitely not be recommending this location to anyone. I hope they all get fired. read more

This review pertains mostly to Petco's tropical fish section, and it's not a pretty one. Not only are the staff people in Petco's fish department the laziest and most confused, but their stupidity will eventually lead to the demise of any pet you had the misfortune of choosing via their assistance. I wandered in to get some new fish for my bedroom aquarium. I asked a young assistant which fish would go well with my current species, naming them off. Without even checking, he shrugged and carelessly said " they all go good with em". Oh? Total bull! When I asked him to call a manager, the little moron said "there ain't none, and he's gonna tell you the same thing". So I marched up front and easily found the manager. I report my dealings with that little dummy, and with no apology or anything, he led me back there. He pointed out a few types of fish, then showed me a tank full of little frogs. He claimed they were "African dwarf frogs" that would grow no larger than the approximately 1" that they were, and required the same care as the fish, even the ability to reside peacefully in my existing tank. Great! I bought a pair, as well as a pair of each of 3 different fish varieties that he claimed would get along with my current group of peaceful little fishies. Here's where the fun begins: As soon as I assimilated all the new arrivals into my tank, 3 of these stressed-out Petco fish began attacking all the other fish, as well as each other! The splashing sound from a dozen fearful fish running for their lives literally kept me awake all night. First thing in the morning, I scooped up the 3 combatants and returned them to Petco, explaining what happened, yet they refused to exchange the fish for others that might be less aggressive, or refund my money. Fine, so I left the fish at Petco and went home. A week later, I noticed the dwarf frogs were filling out a bit. A month later, they were twice the size they were upon purchase, and were eating and crapping incessantly, leaving the water a cloudy green color all the time. Three months later, they'd grown nearly as big as my fist and began eating the fish! I returned to Petco once again, and as much as I'd have preferred to scream at that manager for all the trouble he caused me - particularly lying about the now-huge "dwarf" frogs that he claimed would never grow - I settled instead for a new tank to put them in. With all the peripheral supplies needed, I huffed out of there spending over $170 for the sake of 2 fat ass, man-eating frogs who terrorized us all. Within weeks of these filthy frogs getting their own new, overpriced home, both went and croaked anyway (nah, this sad story doesn't even justify a pun). So, if you love your pet, or wish to purchase one you eventually plan to love, do not do business at Petco! Their prices are higher than all others, their sales staff is both rude and stupid, and the health of their livestock is in serious question. They are merely good for supplies you might need in a pinch, and even those are overpriced here. Stroll down 86th St. to Petland Discount instead. read more

This is exclusively with regards to the grooming service. The rest of the store is fine. We just had an awful experience. It's the second time we have used them to groom our dog and they just aren't good. They rescheduled our appointment Thursday Night from 6pm on a Friday to 1pm... We work. One of us had to bring her over lunch. 5:30pm our dog still wasn't ready our plans for the evening at that point were shot. The staff was NOT kind when we voiced our displeasure at their service. Pretty terrible experience bringing my cat in for a vaccine today. This is usually my go-to store for cat food because it happens to be conveniently located for me, but their VetCo services will absolutely kill your day. Mu cat only needed one vaccine and we were waiting in line for 1.5 hours before we were even signed in to see the vet, then one additional hour between sign in and actually making it to the front of the line where the vet was. A minimum of 50 different customers with their dogs (mainly) or cats were forced to wait 3 hours -a line that spanned the entirety of the store in order to be helped by the one (1) vet they brought in. That's pretty unfair to the animals to be cooped up for so long, especially as they know many customers always come in for these vaccination sessions. There has to be a better process put in place for VetCo days like this whether it be appointment only or some form of prescheduling mixed in with walk-ins, of course in addition to more vets on hand. The entire session took 3 hours from waiting in line to finally having the vaccination completed (which of course took only 30 seconds) to going back in line to pay. Horrible way to waste my morning. On top of this, the vet had the nerve to tell me that this is a stressful environment and it's better to schedule a clinic visit instead. Of course I would have done that if I wouldn't have been charged a $150 clinic visit fee on top of the vaccine fee, so I purposely opted for PetCo because it was more affordable and thinking it would be a smooth sailing experience. The only upside to this is this is a good option for vaccines for your animal if you don't want to schedule an entire vet appointment for a vaccine, as that often includes a check up fee on top of it. read more

I don't know how many times I've called this location only to be left waiting on hold for 30 minutes or longer with no one ever coming to the phone. No matter how many times you call the grooming department, you will not get anyone to pick up. There are never any groomers working and the staff throughout the entire store is unqualified and unhelpful. He was the aquatic specialist and he knew everything like the back of his hand! And took real proud in his work station too! He was super informative and suggested we get some live plants for oxygen, turn on the light only for a couple hours a day or maybe never, feed them one a day or every other day because they don't have stomachs!!
