Bottom line: Lory and the crew at Pet PAL LA gave me an extra six months - at least - with my senior Australian Cattle Dog, Pearl. Even more significantly, Pearl's quality of life was better than was expected during that time. I am indebted to Pet PAL LA for helping me to navigate the final 9 months of Pearl's life. Lory came by my home every week - increased to twice weekly near the end - to administer subcutaneous fluids for Pearl, who was deteriorating from advanced kidney disease. From the first visit to the last, Lory offered suggestions on how to improve Pearl's quality of life. When I had last-minute schedule complications while caring for my mom in hospice, Lory was there to walk and feed Pearl and my younger dog, Sami - happy to accommodate, even with short notice. When it became even more difficult to take Pearl into the vet for routine care, Lory was able to draw blood (for lab tests) and trim nails. When Pearl ate something that required surgical removal, Lory triaged with me on the phone, calling ahead to the emergency hospital so that they were waiting for Pearl on arrival. When I didn't completely understand the surgeon's pre- and post-surgical communications, Lory listened in on the calls to guide me through my decision making. When Pearl came home after surgery, Lory dropped by - on her own initiative, free of charge - just to make sure I had everything under control. (I didn't - even though I didn't realize it; but we got back on track quickly under Lory's watchful care). When I needed to travel to see family, Lory's in-home dog sitting crew made it possible for do so with the confidence that Pearl was in good hands. I didn't worry for a single minute, even though Pearl was in her final two months of life. And when it came time to plan for that end-of-life, Lory hooked me up with a hospice veterinarian and continued to check in on Pearl and I - even after we stopped subcutaneous fluids. Lory is truly a master at what she does. She's proven herself to be an indispensable part of our cats' lives, and we consider her a member of the family at this point. Our senior cat has had two really gnarly health emergencies since 2019, where the vet just sent us home with confusing or no aftercare directions, and Lory has literally saved her life both times. This past Christmas, our cat spent a harrowing week in and out of the emergency vet hospital. Our particular vet had really poor communication skills and sent us home with a cat in critical condition, a feeding tube we were told would be permanent (which required me to spend about 2.5 hours per day manually feeding her), a super grim outlook, and some unnecessary medications which caused a very scary adverse reaction (and a rush trip back to the emergency room). My husband and I were certain our baby was a goner, and we called Lory in tears as a Hail Mary. Lory showed up that same morning, went through the medications and knew immediately what caused the issue. She's really savvy on meds, and also knows what meds come in what forms (pills and syrups are extremely challenging / impossible to administer to a cat and we'd been given 6 meds, 2 of which were redundant or unnecessary, all pills needed DAILY. Subcutaneous injectables are ironically super easy to administer - she had our vet switch to injectables wherever possible, and this eased much of the burden). Our cat was also having a great deal of distress with the feeding tube site, and was itching around the clock, and I was losing my ever-loving mind with the overnight feedings and just the hyper vigilance in general. We returned to the vet yet again, and despite our pleas, they refused to remove the tube. They tightened the sutures (which pinched the skin and made my cat even more uncomfortable) and sent us home, again in despair for our cat's quality of life at this point, because we feared she wouldn't eat without the tube, but she was obsessed with scratching while the tube remained. Without Lory, this would've been the end. Lory, however, has years of experience caring for cats with feeding tubes and was able to help us through it. We had the tube removed a few days later and our cat's been thriving since. ***PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART*** As it stands, our cat needs pilling 3x a week for the rest of her life. Lory taught us how to administer the daily injections, and I confidently give those. The pills are another story. I just cannot. My husband did learn how to do the pills, and we did a trial run without Lory. For about three weeks, things seemed to be going great in terms of getting the pills in her, but with "the calls coming from inside the house," now our cat was flinching and running from my husband every time he approached her. This resulted in his having to chase her and manhandle her to get the pills in her, which resulted in a super stressed out husband and a super stressed out cat - ***HER LABS TOOK A NOTICEABLE DIVE*** due to the stress of pilling. She started vomiting and having diarrhea several times a week. Long story short, we called Lory back to be the villain, the poops IMMEDIATELY got better, the fecal labs magically returned to normal on the following monthly test, and my cat loves my husband again. read more
