MANAGEMENT CHANGED! i've been coming here with my Alaskan malamute for at least three years!! After management changed everything went downhill. They told me that my Alaskan malamute was badly behaved and made me get medication. I said that's all right, we shall do that but every time I take her, they can't finish the job because they say that she refuses to stay still and still make me pay full price for nothing!!!! The old manager did a fantastic job every time we brought Kima (My dog) here we had to leave a big tip cause they always did a great job. I loved the way she looked. I loved everything about the grooming experience and she wasn't scared at all!! After management changed. Booked for a Cat grooming (Pancakes, long hair, 6 years old, first groom!) and am super pleased with the results! I called ahead to make an appointment. Didn't get much instruction other than to come at 8:15am and bring medical/vax history, but person on the phone was very polite and nice! Salon was clean and cute! I opted for the full bathing service with a lion cut. Price came out to $120 not including tip, which is very fair for the quality of work done. I got a call about 2.5 hours later to come pick up Pancakes and was so happy to see that my bby didn't look too stressed and was absolutely adorable! Upon closer inspection, I noticed that they were very detailed and thorough. Back door cleaned up nicely, paw pad hairs trimmed (which a lot of other places tend to skimp on), ears cleaned well and face framing was perfect! Also, I regularly trim Pancakes' claws at home so those were good to go, but they even took the time to file the tips to a super smooth point! Love the attention to details!! Very happy with how Pet Star is handling social distancing. Only one client is allowed in the store at a time, and they will also pickup the dogs from your car. I asked for my total before coming to the salon and paid in cash to minimize my time in the store. And obviously you should wear a mask when you're dealing with the staff. If you are comparing this place to a PetSmart or Petco, then you can expect much better results for dog grooming. I feel unfair for leaving a bad review after years of going here and getting decent services for haircut and bath for my 3yo goldendoodle... However, recently the main owner used to be a guy but now there is an older woman at the counter. She gives me the kind of vibe where I could see why my dog is scared to go here. Granted that my dog gets scared easily, his entire body shivers when he enters the store and he refuses to go in. I must say that my dog loves water and bath at home! (He jumps into the bathtub when it is bath time- a bit unusual but true!) Today as I was discussing the haircut length, the older woman looked at my dog and said - "he has the type of hair that isn't pretty when it grows"... um, what? Also, he was shivering so much in the corner and I saw some treats on the table for customers. I asked the lady if I can take some, she said yes, I fed one to my dog who didn't eat it, and she then says "only dogs with good personality eats it" in the most judging way. I thought it was SO effing rude, but then decided to ignore because they do a decent job with grooming and I admittedly love their shampoo scent... but as I'm leaving, I see the lady put a loop around his neck and drag from afar and my dog coughs from choking. I almost went back to yank my dog back from her hands, but I just told myself, NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN AFTER TODAY. For any type of dog care services, talent and skills are of course important but you want to make sure that the owners truly love dogs and enjoy working with them. I feel saying this but I sense that the new owner just sees this as business and does it for the $$ (not to mention, I go back every 3 months and they raise the price by $10 randomly at times... is inflation doing this to all other places?)- I'm sure grooming a dog is not an easy task (which is why I decide to go to a store) but just don't feel comfortable leaving my dog here anymore. :( Also.. just discovered that the way they trimmed his ear hair.... was so brutal, my dog kept shaking his head and hears... and I thought it was an ear infection but it turns out there are blood clots from his ear hair being pulled too harshly. read more

It is almost impossible to find a cat groomer in the Northern Virginia area. After my last groomer went out of business, I tried Pet Star Salon after viewing their website and seeing that they offered cat grooming. They were able to make a next day appointment, which was incredible given my cat had some really tight matting under her armpits. They require proof of rabies vaccination, so make sure you bring a copy with you to your appointment. The inside of the location is clean and modern looking. The owner checked me in, and took my cat (who is typically incredible anxious) out to examine her and discuss the grooming plan. It was clear that she had worked with cats before, and I swear she had magic hands, because my cat settled down immediately. She explained what she was going to do, how long it would take, and would call me when it was over. The owner actually has certifications in cat grooming, and it totally shows! My cat looked incredible when I picked her up, and was still very calm and relaxed (which NEVER happens when I pick her up from grooming appointments). Her fur is so floofy and soft, and they gave a great sanitary trim. They also shaved her paw pads which I've never seen before and am frankly surprised she allowed them to touch her paws at all. She used to track her liter around that would get stuck in her toe fluff, so we're very excited this will help minimize that. I think their prices are on par with what we've paid before for a full grooming ($90), and I believe it's a little more if you want a lion cut. We will DEFINITELY be going back!! read more

Brought my Bichon Frise here, even paid and extra $15 (total $115 + $20 tips) so they comb my dogs hair first before grooming, and make my dogs hair look kind of puffy. They just took the trimmer and trimmed my dog to barely no hair left! I am pretty sure it took them 2min to complete the job! My younger sister would do a better job for free! And guess what? they will not even let you see your dog until you pay first! Because they know they made your dog look like a rat and you will not be paying that money for this garbage job! The salon called me this morning and said the last time they groomed my pets was in July 2018 which is true. I said I would clarify on the review when the service occurred which is why I am writing this update. I had fully intended to write a review immediately, but a close family member was hospitalized out of state and required my family to manage her care for the next few months. Everything was so busy and hectic I put a lot of things on the backburner. It was not until I went to find a new groomer on Yelp in January 2019 and saw the review of the dog who suffered a cut so severe a vet visit and stitches was required that I realized my dog's injuries was not just bad luck and carelessness but a pattern of abuse. I feel horrible and wish I had made the time to write a review earlier. I feel strongly Pet Star should not get away with hurting pets for profit. I am happy a lot of people have good experiences here. It took a while before we had a bad one, but one is enough and we will not be back. read more

Terrible treatment of our pet. They left scabs for my dogs ear when they plucked his hair.

I have brought my dog here for years. He is a 13 year old, 20 pound dog. Not long after the change in ownership, they told me my dog tried to bite when his nails were clipped and tacked on an additional $20. I wasn't happy as the prior owner never had such a problem (or knew how to handle it.). I paid the extra charge then and after the next grooming. Today, when I came to pick him up, I was told he tried to bite no matter where they tried to touch him, and needs to be medicated. I was charged $105!!! I see another recent reviewer had pretty much the same problem. Time to find another groomer. read more

They brushed my GSD out so well that I had to go back to previous photos and make sure he wasn't given a hair cut! Makes sense though as he had been shedding a crazy amount the past couple of weeks. This place is quaint but clean and professional. They only allow one pet inside at a time which I like, and they have you remove all collars/harnesses/leash as they bring your pet back with their own leash. This place is under new management. I have taken my dogs to previous owners for years with great result. I have two geriatric small dogs and never heard anything but good things! They tolerate being washed and blowdryed at home perfectly well. Today however, these owners proceeded to complain about my dogs, stating they are difficult so they charged an extra $20. Additionally, because they "don't like being blowdryed" they blowdried my two older shelter dogs while they were in a cage. Lastly, they suggested I give my dogs sedatives before their next grooming. They don't even need sedatives for the vet. Something tells me they will be charging people a lot of extra money for their "difficult" dogs. read more

I brought my Miniature Poodle to Pet Star Salon today for a much needed cut. Due to surgery and illness it had been over 10 weeks since he had a cut. His previous groomer who always did a fair job, left the other place I used to take him to. Pet Star Salon followed my instructions exactly and he came home looking like the a poodle! No cage drying. I'm more than pleased and I feel like this will be his placed from now on. They answered the phone the first time I called and they scheduled him to come in with only 4 days notice. Their prices were competitive and actually less than the other placed I used to take him to for hit or miss service. My wife and I brought our 6-month old miniature poodle for a haircut and ear cleaning. We were impressed by the professional service of Su and the staff. Based on the dogs that I saw on a Thursday morning, I would guess that at least 33% of their clients are poodles. So if you're looking for an experienced poodle groomer, this is a great place. I can't vouch for other breeds of dogs, but there's really no reason to take your poodle to a PetSmart, when you have the option of a professional groomer that specializes in poodles. I can't recommend Pet Star Salon highly enough! I've been taking my cat, Max, for a couple of years and haven't looked back or elsewhere since. It's totally worth the drive from DC. We were very sad when Pet Star Salon suspended cat grooming services briefly during Covid as Max was very familiar and comfortable with the groomers and staffs here. The one time I took Max someplace else in NOVA was a horrendous experience that I don't EVER wish on anyone's pet and it took visits to the vet and time for Max to recover. You can imagine my relief and gratitude when Pet Star reopened their cat grooming services. They are extremely professional, clean, attentive to details, and gentle with pets. My cat always comes out looking gorgeous, and smelling fabulous. She is never in distress. I visited Pet Star Salon today for the first time after having read the positive reviews about its services, particularly for cats. I have been so disappointed and frustrated by PetSmart grooming salon's inconsistency and disregard for cat parents when it comes to grooming, and I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to find another place to get my sweet cat groomed. Thankfully I found Pet Star by a Google search and was able to get feedback about them through both Google and Yelp. I must say that I am extremely pleased with the results and how easy it was to get an appointment and the efficiency of the drop-off and pick-up. My cat is not exactly a super long hair cat but his hair was long enough that it was shedding all over my home and because he is gray it was beginning to look very dull and dusty. I didn't want to hold him as much because I didn't want to get his hair all over my clothes, which cat owners know is very difficult to get rid of. As you can see from the photos, they did exactly what I asked of them which was to just shave him evenly down low as if he were a shorthair cat. He looks fabulous and surprisingly when I picked him up and held him up close to me he smelled great too! They have, as I have been told, three cat groomers there and they have specific days each month that they perform cat grooming services, which makes him very convenient to get appointments. Mr. Nah is the one who groomed my Miles Davis today. Thank you so much Mr. Nah! You did a fabulous job and I will be bringing Miles back to you for all of his grooming needs. Several cat grooming services came up in my Google search and the first one I called was Bark and Bubbles. I called them three times on three different occasions and didn't get an answer. So I decided to call the next one that came up and that was Pet Star. They answered on the first try and I was able to get a next-day appointment. My shih tzu, Izzey, has been coming to Pet Star Salon for full grooming since this business opened ~3 years ago. The groomers have always done a phenomenal job and my girl leaves extra soft and fluffy. This might sound strange but Izzey loves coming here so much that she gets really excited when I park the car out front. When I bring her in and the young lady at the front greets her, Izzey lays flat or rolls over on her back with her tail wagging fast as ever. She isn't scared or doesn't get nervous when we're there. This is how I know the groomers treat her well and they have a positive bond. I moved further away but still make the drive to Pet Star Salon. A year and half ago I got a mini schnauzer and decided I'd take her to a groomer close to where I lived for convenience. They did a great job especially with Pepper being deathly scared of water when I try to bathe her at home (it takes me AND my husband to hold this little 12 pound dog in the tub). Although I don't get my dog [Ginger] groomed as much as I should (maybe 3x annually), when I do, I go to Pet Star Salon. They always do a great job with Ginger even though she is blind and deaf (she's ~14 years old). I really appreciate the patience they have dealing with my difficult dog and make the trip from Fairfax city (with Ginger barking the entire way) each time. They give good estimates and their business is clean and what you would hope for in a pet groomer. They also ask for your input on how you would like your dog's hair to look like (if you go for the haircut option - similar to how a stylist would ask you). They always put a bowtie on your dog after they're done and I think they spray some sort of fragrance(?) on your dog to make them smell better (I don't mind since it's pretty light). You can ask them to brush your dog's teeth while they're at it for a small upcharge. I opt for this option as Ginger absolutely refuses to let me brush her teeth (even when she could see). 5% discount for cash payments - don't forget to tip your dog groomer like you would a waiter! They sure go through a lot more hassle than waiters anyways. They provide great service for our Shih Tzu. The summer cut works really well. I went here once with my puppy (that was 3 months old at the time). I did the full package and I really liked how he turned out (: (I'm going today as my 6 month baby is needing some good grooming LOL) Bath: Teddy smelled SOO good for days! I couldn't stop sniffing him LOL Haircut: It was shorter than I had expected (though that was the first time I ever went to a dog groomers). I was shocked at first, though it was cute; BUT I fell in love with the haircut after an hour passed. Ear Cleaning: They took away all of his nasty earwax, took away the hair from the inside of his ear, as well as nicely trimmed all around it Anal Cleaning: His little butthole was extremely clean and they trimmed around his butt nicely. I didn't think it was needed but it is: my dog is a cavachon with more on the bichon frise side, and his poop was get caught on his curly hair. Doing this will prevent that. Nail Trimming: Like I said in the beginning, I did the full package, which included nails. However, I normally cut my dog's nails myself and so when I checked his nails, they didn't touch them. However, I was slightly disappointed because I wanted them to use a dermal and shave it down. And I paid for the full package... but truthfully I didn't care so much. The entire package was $50, but because my dog wasn't behaving so well (as he was only 3months at the time) it was $60, and it took about three hours for them to finish. One small detail I really loved was the fact that when I went to pick him up, they put on a cute red bow tie on Teddy. I couldn't stop laughing because he was so cute.
