My experiences at Pet Supplies Plus have really improved over the last year. The attendants have been very friendly and helpful. I even looked at a few kitties! I am quite pleased with the selection of fish and fish products. I also have turtles and a uromastyx. The reptile supplies are here for me to get, while shopping for my aquarium needs. Been going here for 3 years. People here are helpful and friendly. However, I have been there twice when they did not have hot water and mother time no towels. We have stopped on several occasions to use their self serve dog wash. It has both a tub for larger dogs that they can easily step into and one for small/medium dogs that can use the steps or be lifted in. Other customers were using the dog wash this trip when we arrived. A staff member promptly cleaned the area for us once they were finished and checked the stock of shampoos and clean towels. At only $5 per wash if you purchase a discount card, this place can't be beat. Everyone is very friendly as well. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. I called the other week asking if female Guinea pigs are available and I was told that they can't guarantee a gender as all the Guinea pigs are kept in the same enclosure. I am shocked and disgusted by this practice. Guinea pigs reach sexual maturity by the age of 3 weeks which means the chance that the males - most likely siblings impregnate the females is VERY high. So don't buy your Guinea pig from this store. You could very likely end up with a pregnant baby Guinea pig. read more

Pet Supplies Plus is a great alternative to the PetSmart, which is located at the far north end of Charlottesville. The prices are good and they have a much larger supply of organic, natural, or special formula (all protein) cat foods -- for instance, the brands Wellness, Innova, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. It is never crowded, the store is brightly lit and well organized, and it has reasonable hours -- at least, it's always open when I stop by after work. They also offer a senior citizen discount every Tuesday. I can't take advantage of it myself, but I'm envious. Also like Petsmart, your pet is free to shop and spend $$ with you. read more

I went in to look at betta and they were perfectly heathy then only two days later i came back to get two and almost all of them were dying or dead of either severe white slime disease or fin rot. Whatever you do, don't come to this place when nature calls. Stopped in to buy some fish tank supplies and staff was adamant that the bathroom was not for customers. Made for a difficult shopping experience especially since afterwards as I stood there asking to quickly purchase the thing I needed the staff was uninformed and not very nice. I agree that this is a great alternative to Pet Smart, complete with a better selection of pet food. Recently I visited Pet Supplies Plus to pick up his food (the brand is Wellness). Pet Supplies Plus carries it while Pet Smart does not. However, Pet Supplies Plus costs $10 more per bag if the same size as that of my pet store in Louisville! I will be moving to Charlottesville soon but I will be sure to check put other places before I return here. read more

Curbside pickup during COVID-19 social distancing is a life-saver. Was able to place an order online for the only brand of wet food that my cat will eat. The order was pulled quickly and I was able to pick it up by driving over to the store and giving them a quick call. I've been here three times, and my experiences keep getting worse. The first time, I was unimpressed with the customer service when I asked questions, but I purchased a dog e-collar because I was in a pinch. The second time, I came in to buy two baby guinea pigs (I know, I'm opposed to it too, but my guinea pigs had just tragically died, and I needed to replace them for my kids). The babies looked super sad in their dirty cage. They assured me they only sell female guinea pigs. Well when I get home to double check their parts on the internet--SURPRISE--I have a girl and a boy. As guinea pigs reach sexual maturity very quickly, I'm shocked I didn't end up with a pregnant pig. When I returned to the store for my third visit to get another female (because I couldn't bring myself to return the male to this place), the staff were completely unhelpful and didn't seem to care they sold me a male pig. They were unapologetic and apathetic even when I showed them pictures of the boy they sold me. I don't believe they have any real knowledge of the animals they are selling. Plus, the animals are in tiny, unclean cages and look rather miserable. I am all for supporting local businesses, but I will not be returning here. read more

I have been visiting this pet store regularly for the past three years to buy food for my son's snake and at times I am rather proud of the animal husbandry, but lately, I have been pretty disappointed. I noticed this week that the pac-man frogs have been placed on a repticarpet, which made me rather upset. I would hope that whoever did this would know well enough that these animals require a substrate that they can borrow in, after all, they spend the majority of their lifetimes buried. I don't feel as if the carpet would be able to hold the proper humidity, as well as allow these animals to borrow. I do enjoy coming to this store but I am rather concerned about the wellbeing of the animals from time to time. read more

fish are in bad shape with ancient Mars systems. the same kind of wall tanks that walmart uses. Saltwater is in even worse shape. most fish show signs of ick and they have no one there with real experience or knowledge of the saltwater fish they bring in. don't bother buying frozen rats here, 20$ for 2? how is a jumbo only 6 inches? it wasn't much different from a medium i got for another snake. a large on rodent pro is 8 to 9 and what would constitute as a jumbo is 11 to 13. wont be coming back here any more. since i have no local place nearby online shopping will be the way to go. read more

Please DO NOT buy fish here! We bought 3 fish from this location and introduced them to a tank full of healthy fish. Within 1 week all of our fish developed white spots and started to die. The vet informed us this is likely from "ick" from the pet store and advised us to treat the tank with medicine and remove the current filters. We contacted the store manager who said all they could do is refund us 3$ for the fish we bought (after loosing all our fish, buying Quick Cure medicine for our tank, and needing to replace our filters) seems like great customer service right? Spare yourself the trouble and DO NOT buy fish from this location. read more

I've enjoyed this store and the staff thoroughly. They always have great deals and they email out coupons for every weekend allowing you to get $10 off a $40 purchase. So I save $10 on my dogs food and a couldn't be more happy. The employees there also offer to carry the food to my car. Great staff and great selection of food that is good for your pets. read more

I've finally hopped on the Pet Supplies Plus wagon. I used to drive all the way out to PetSmart to get my cat's food and litter supplies. However, the last several times I've been to PetSmart, they have not had her food or litter in stock. Neither of which are especially uncommon brands (Breeze litter system, Purina ProPlan, and Royal Canin). Pet Supplies Plus always has these items in stock and, to my great surprise, at a lower price than at PetSmart! I've been won over. Not only is Pet Supplies Plus much closer and more convenient, but its stock is far superior to that of PetSmart. read more

It was so bad in there, I actually had to take photos of some of the tanks. The rabbit was sleeping in it's litter box because the cage was so dirty, the ferrets cage was litterally full of giant poops everywhere, the fish tanks were so filthy, it makes you wonder if they ever clean them. This is the 3rd time in a month I went by there looking for aquarium supplies and they still have filthy tanks full of dead fish so it isn't a one time thing. I can write this review in total confidence because I have been circulating the other pet stores in cville-pet smart, petco and walmart and they NEVER look like this. It isn't right. This store has consistently had the most unpleasant, unfriendly, and unhelpful employees of any business I've been to in Charlottesville. I went there when they first opened years ago now, and found the experience so miserable on such a regular basis that I stopped going for five years. I returned today only to find exactly the same: a rude, dismissive cashier and an older (tall, balding) guy who snapped nastily at me when I politely asked if they could open a second register (given that there were eight people standing in line at the one that was open). It seems that the employees hate working there--a creepy place. Anyhow, the sometimes better prices in no way compensate for having to suffer through the nasty environment there.
