Wow. I overlooked this place as a fishkeeper. I always see the same places pop-up on yelp whenever I look up "tropical fish". This place is definitely a hidden gem. The tanks and all their pets in general look to be in amazing condition. My cousin came in to buy shrimp and the owner was extremely helpful. A lot of fish stores kind of look down on you when you ask questions. The owner of this store actually walked us through each species of shrimp and what type of water requirements they had. The owner knows exactly what hes doing. Definitely coming back here when I start up my own shrimp tank. read more

We bought a beautiful baby budgie from them, however we were never told the wings were clipped (extremely poorly) and even though they checked her gender by holding her upside down, days later we noticed she was bald on her bottom another thing they never told us as well as her tail looking as though she was in a French moult...we lost her and it's because of the terrible care of their animals. read more

My favorite pet shop! I rather come here than any major pet supply shop. I got some PRLs, ultra gold shrimp and I believe fire shrimp. I love them so much! And especially the panda loaches. Their guppies are so adorable! Their customer service is great! Always friendly and I feel welcomed. I need to go back for more panda loaches and shrimp. read more

I'm adding a star to compensate for undeserved lost stars from another reviewer. Yes, Sean S. and I came here with another friend in search of the perfect cornsnake.... And we found he/she here. We also found a stinky surprise which was the odor that permeated the front door area, but after about 10 minutes, I got used to it. The funny thing is that the staff were constantly cleaning during our visit, but I must say, I was at Reptile Finders (mom and pop shop also) the other week, and that place smelled about the same also. Presentation is not this place's forte, but their service is top notch and down to earth. They have a nice variety of reptiles and fish for reasonable prices. If you are looking for a pet, try this place or the local pet shelter, sometimes the gems are really there awaiting to be discovered! read more

So I am doing an update because yes, the people there are nice and helpful. I actually like them very much. I love local businesses and hope that this place does very well but at the same time, changes some of their practices. What Sean says is correct about how can a seasonal 16 year old kid know more than someone that has been doing it for 20 years. But at the same time, if you have been doing that kind of work for 20 years and you, as the owner of the business, still hold puppies in the back of the store until someone buys them, you clearly don't care about how bad it is for a puppy to live locked up in a cage for sometimes MONTHS! And for what, $399???? It's kinda like the healthy, fit vegan person that owns a McDonalds. How can you be so healthy and encourage others to eat sh*t? It doesn't make sense. With this analogy, you can't possibly say you love pets, know them or understand them if you have them in cages in the back of the store. But they do carry great food! I hope everyone that actually loves their dogs goes and buys the kind of dog food that they sell. If you are buying it from Costco, Petco or any other store change! Feed your kid the best. read more

They have a nice selection of salt water fish and live rock. They even have salt water for a great price. As a bonus the staff is very friendly. They have an OK variety in their fish section. Not the best, but also far better than others I've seen. They have some live plants you can choose from as well as fish that are already grown for those of you with larger setups. Have an area with a lot of supplies and food as well. This is one of the businesses that make Downey such a wonderful community. Going into Pet Town is such an experience! There are most often parakeets in an open setting as you enter. Nice to hear birds chirping. It reminds me of the Dole Pineapple show at Disneyland - "Let's All sing like the birdies sing, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet!" Nice respite from the sometimes fast lifestyle pace of today. Walk in and you are immediately transported. Going up and down the aisles will bring you to see fish of all colors, types and sizes and everything to house and care for any you may choose to purchase. Other animals and creepy crawlies are to be found, also. This is a one stop shop that is Downey owned and run. I have nothing against chain stores and the employees therein, but I would rather discuss the latest in pet supplies, along with conversation that can more than a few minutes. Jack and Sue are the proprietors at this pet supply store that I have frequented for many a year. There is an array of animals and products. If they don't have it and you need it, they will think of you when ordering stick. How do I know? My aged crow would only consume one kind of food the last years of his life. The Myna Bird pellets got increasingly difficult to find. They managed to track down a distributor and they stocked the pellets just for my precious Taylor. Not many businesses will go above and beyond like this, especially for a low priced item. You will not find nicer people nor a better store. They have built up a good reputation over time. We recently bought a 40-gallon tank and were nervous about how we were doing as far as upkeep and Jason really helped us out. He was cleaning tanks and totally stopped what he was doing to show us what their filters look like, how to properly use a water syphon, how to get the bubbles out of our tank, etc. He must've stood there with us for fifteen minutes while we picked his brain about everything we could think of. I didn't get the names of the owners but they helped us at check out and were kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable as well. The prices, additionally, are unbeatable. They sell gallons of water for cheaper than "discount" fish stores and their salt, fish, and tanks are all wonderfully priced. We will definitely be returning for all of our saltwater needs. I went to PetCo looking to purchase a snake for my daughter this weekend. They had two snakes to choose from, a limited selection of housing and no staff that would take a moment to answer my questions. We left and googled pet stores and wound up here at Pet Town. Okay, so the store has a slight odor and is dark and slightly disorderly. For what I received in service, I would take that any day. There were three employees visible, two of which were very attentive to my needs and questions. Both were very knowledgeable and helpful. The store had a huge selection of snakes, critters and fish (as well as a few dogs). After about ten minutes of education from the employees, I rounded up the supplies and made my purchase. The price was much less than PetCo for everything. The snake was 29.99 vs PetCo 49.99. The cage was 34.99 vs PetCo 54.99. The decorations were priced low as well. From now on, when it comes to pets I am going strictly mom and pop. The service was 1000X better as were the prices. Just hold your nose if the smell bothers you. With retail becoming ever more corporate, we forget the value of the good ol' mom and pop store. When it comes to buying a pet, whose advice do you want, the 16 year old high school kid who got hired 3 weeks ago or the husband and wife who have been doing this for twenty years and know pets better than anyone?
