The entire process was explained prior to beginning to manage expectations via an initial consultation. This was not only informative, but also educational as my hair type and challenges were discussed. The salon suite was spacious with a reception area, styling stations and wash area. Initially, I'd used a Groupon and gotten a relaxer and one of the best haircuts I ever had! Six months later, I returned for a relaxer, cut and color. I asked if semi-permanent color would be used because my hair grade is pretty fine to begin with and it's safer. Toby said a demi would be fine and that he would even use a permanent color if he'd been doing my hair the whole time because it would be healthy enough. Needless to say, you could practically see my scalp afterwards. I went home and cried! In fairness, my hair wasn't in the best condition to begin with. But that is further evidence of why I think a demi was bad advice. I've since ditched relaxers, I eat better, take supplements and I'm back on my way to glorious locks again.. The Tobanizer still gives the best haircuts. He is truly gifted in this area. But I will not return.

On the other hand, it is like stepping through a door and into a fashion show, complete with models, excited chatter, and glamor. In short, it has a terrific ambiance. When I enter, I check in at the desk. They remember my name. They bring me coffee and remember how I like it. There is not much waiting; Norman, who is both my stylist and the owner, comes up front to get me within a couple of minutes after I arrive. A Zapien's stylist doesn't begin with coloring or cutting. Instead, the stylist looks the client over like Michelangelo examining a new model. The stylist determines features that need emphasizing or de-emphasizing, the optimal shape and length for the hair, and (if the customer wants color, as I do), the optimal color. Then, the stylist discusses his or her impressions with the client. The stylist and client agree, and then the artistry begins. There's no need to go into the details of a cut and color. Suffice it to say that many people (the stylist, the color assistant, the wash assistant, the scheduler, and so on) have a role in helping the client, every one of them knows what they are doing, and every one of them executes to perfection. Zapien's is about more than hair: it is about making the client look and feel great. As one example, I have always had a ruddy complexion. I asked Norman whether he had any suggestions for hiding the redness. He looked me over (Michelangelo again) and gave me a suggestion I had never thought of. It was a Godsend: it worked perfectly. I will sum my experiences up like this: How good is Zapien's? So good that I start looking forward to my appointment three days before it is scheduled. I highly recommend.

I know what my hair is capable of looking and feeling like after styling from skilled stylists back home in Baltimore. But unfortunately again and again in Atlanta I would sit in someone's chair who would needlessly over blow dry my 4A natural hair into submission or make multiple passes with the flat iron, leaving my hair cute for that day but hella parched, straw like, hard to manage texture a few days later. But then I found Kim! I found Kim the way you should find a good stylist...by admiring her work in the streets. I asked a young lady who did her hair because it looked so healthy shiny full and nicely curled, and she shared that she just found Kim and you gotta go give her a try! After making an appointment online, went to the salon and loved the decor and the friendliness of the staff and that big beautiful smile from Kim! I'm not gonna lie that day I visited the salon my hair looked...well to be perfectly blunt...TRIFLIN ( now mind you I had just been to a hair salon 2 weeks prior who fried the hell out of my hair!). She sat me down calmed my fears, told me "Don't Worry! We Got You, We'll Take care of you!" And indeed she did! She did a pre-consultation 1st to know what my home care regimen was and made suggestions to get the best out of my hair at home, but first would have to rehabilitate my strands for a few visits with hydration treatments. I had my hair washed/conditioned/hydrated...Blow dried...and my blow session was soo relaxing it was almost therapeutic...there was no flinching and crouching down from the flames of the blow dryer, just enough to do the job without harm! And no 100 passes with the flat iron either! Start to finish I was in and out just about 2 hours! Ya'll I left out of hair with juicy bouncy curls! BUT the best part...my hair stay hydrated for nearly 10 days without needing to put any product in it whatsoever! I mean no need for hair spray, hair gloss, NOTHING to me that was the true test! I just left my 2nd visit and my hair is already responding so so well, I am so confidant in her skills that I feel like I finally say a wooosaaaah and trust that someone will get my hair to my desired length and thickness!
