2 weeks ago my gf and I got 3 guinea pigs from here. Within a week one had developed a skin issue, and the other one has passed. We took him to the vet at about 1:30 am because he was breathing poorly. The pet agreement stated that we had to take them to Petco first if we wanted any reimbursement. I accept that but when the employees are rudely saying that to you and asking about why you didn't call them (they where closed and it was a emergency) and I accept that but they also wouldn't give us a refund for him (I feel heartless using these kinds of words about him like he's a product) they told us we had to bring his dead body into the store or else they don't care. I understand policy is policy but they need to be less rude and heartless towards people who they sold sick animals to. This company is horrible and insensitive. Especially when they say "you need to bring in the pet" and we say "the deceased one who's buried?" And then they say "yeah we need it for our vendors" that's just extremely insensitive and rude. And not listening about the fact it was an EMERGENCY so we couldn't wait until they opened and making it seem like it was our fault. I feel so bad for all the animals here they're probably all sick and not taken care of. read more

I would leave a lower rating if I could. The way that they take care of their animals up for adoption is disgusting and neglectful. There was one cat when I went in and there was poop smeared all over his cubby and and old empty wet food can on his bed. If you came within a three foot radius you could smell poop. The most important thing I can tell you is to avoid shopping at the Petco Store on Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor, MI at all costs. There was a dispute over an overcharge for self scoop cat litter that I've purchased there for years, in the same manner I did on 7/18/17 with friendly service and a happy experience. However, on 7/18/17, everything changed and apparently, they hav new policies with the scoopable iitter that include extra charges, but they never notified anyone in signage or even the employee who kindly helped me scoop the litter (carefully measured) into different containers that are easier for me carry (b/c I'm disabled). But they charge me extra for using my own containers. When I got through line and looked at my receipt the manager came and immediately insuated that I was somehow ripping them off. I tried to reason w/her but there was no common sense or logic to be reached in this situation. Bottom line is that she was willin to lose a lifelong customer over insisting a $2.00 overcharge for using my own containers made total sense. It's curious to me when I see stores rigidly ahereing to policies that amount in pennies for them as a corporate so, I'm tempted to wonder if b/c of these newPetco trivial policies, that their corporation may be in trouble of going down. Be warned that have adopted new inflexible policies that are not customer friendly are unwilling to budge. The customer service phone line will take any complaint or suggestion reports, but beyond that they will tell you that Corporate promises to call you back but they have no policies in terms of turn around on when that may happen. The Petco store in Ann Arbor, MI in particular has new policies that are not posted & even their own employees don't know about but you'll find out at the register when you're overcharged without notice and they will refuse to refund the overcharge. I have been going there for years and never encountered a problem. But new policies have created a problem for me based on my disabillities and the store chooses to remain inflexible and insists I should be charged more for cat litter that I carefully measure out in their designated buckets (so I am sure to be taking the correct amount) but have always put 1/2 in my own containers to make it easier to carry. The employees there even help me do it. However, now there is a 1.00 extra charge for doing that before you go through line. If you fill their bucket, go through line and then get their employee to help you dump 1/2 of it into your containers at the end of the register counter than you will not be charged the extra $1.00 . ' The manager would ike to ban all other containers all together and I'm sure she will, which means you'll need to leave your other containers out onn the sidewalk in front of the store and ask their employee to step out the door to help you dump 1/2 of their container into your own container. Maybe they'll end up banning this also. Anyway, I've never cheated them but it sounds like they are having to take a tough stand on the money they're losing on cat litter. Maybe the store isn't doing too well. They chose to lose a lifetime customer yesterday over $2.00 extra dollar. When a supposed multibillion dollar company has to go above and beyond to over charge customers $2.00 for doing nothing different (than they have for years) and definitely doing nothing wrong. then maybe the stockholders should start to wonder about their financial well being. The good news is that a new PetSmart Store is opening on Carpenter between Packard and Ellsworth, so I'm praying they will provide good customer serve. read more

I was very nervous to have my dog's nails trimmed because he can be crazy and aggressive. Brittany, at the Ann Arbor location, made us both feel totally calm and it went off without a hitch. This review is specifically for the grooming service. I've attempted to use their grooming service twice and have been met both times with staggering incompetence. I brought my dog in for the first time a few months ago for a bath. I waited patiently for the girl behind the desk to look up from her personal phone to greet me; in case they weren't aware of standard business practices, playing on your personal phone while on the work floor and not greeting a customer is unprofessional. She finally looked up and told me that the dog bath is appointment based only. The "salon" was completely empty and she made no attempt to offer to book an appointment for me or inform me of the next available appointment. I brought my dog in again recently for the a la carte "face, feet, and fanny" trim. The website states that no appointment is necessary for this service. This time I was greeted and immediately asked if I had an appointment. I replied that I didn't because I was there for the a specific a la carte service that doesn't require an appointment. I was told--much to my disappointment, but not surprise--that appointments are required and that they'd have to bathe the dog also. I explained that their company website stated no appointment was necessary and that this service was "a la carte" (i.e., could occur sans bath). Their response made it clear that 1) they didn't know the definition of "a la carte" despite the placard at their front desk listing the service as "a la carte" and 2) they weren't aware of the policies and information listed on their own company's website. They then informed me that they were booked throughout the Holidays, so I'm guessing that means they're booked through Christmas, maybe even through the New Year, maybe through MLK day...who knows. I doubt their being booked is due to overwhelming customer demand, as their window hosts a huge sign calling for "experienced dog groomers." Perhaps they should include "professional dog groomers" and "professional, competent customer service staff" in their hiring efforts as well. I made a purchase here as well and I regret it. Don't waste your time going to this PetCo location. PetPeople, the new Pet Store across the street, is fantastic: the staff are competent, friendly, professional, and knowledgeable; the facilities are clean, organized, and walk-in friendly. read more

This review is specially for the adoption event here. In brief, you will possibly be received by a very rude and neurotic woman. You will end up with extremely awful experience, and probably cannot get the cat you want. If you truly want to adopt a cat, please, go to HSHV. Three years ago, my fiancé and I came to the adoption event here. We were received by a woman who's in her 50s or so. She kept asking about our salary and housing, and question us again and again about how we gonna afford the kitten's food and vet fee. We told her we are both graduate students here at U of M and we both have stipend. That's more than enough for supporting a cat. She seems very unhappy and kept saying she wants to adopt this kitten, and we are just students and we do not deserve this kitten...Then she wanted to see my ID. At that time we bought a car but we didn't get our driving license yet. I gave her my passport, and she immediately got angry, asking me how can I send my kitten to vet if I do not have a car. I told her we already have a car and we both would get our driving license in a month. However, she persisted that we did not have a car and we were lying to her, despite the fact that I can go back to bring my driving permit and car insurance to her. At last, she said she won't let me adopt any cat here any more... Several months ago, my two friends, who are a couple, want to adopt a cat. Again they came here because there would be an adoption event on weekend. Unfortunately, I believe they were received by the same woman. She kept asking them about salaries and housing condition, and kept questioning them how they can afford the kitten. After over an hour, she said that's not enough and let them come tomorrow to be interviewed by people from shelter again. Again, the next day, she asked them the same questions and finally said she need to keep the kitten until Saturday's adoption event because now is not the regular time for adoption. My friends asked her why that poor kitten need to stay in this cage for three more days, but she said she must follow the adoption rule in here. Well, my friend came again on Saturday, but the kitten has gone!!! The woman said someone adopted her earlier today. "I feel so sorry for you guys". That's what she said. read more

Tried to get my puppy groomed - I agreed to get a puppy cut (his face only) and then I paid $15 more to get his legs cleaned up so he could get used to the grooming process. (Basically wasted $40.) He was fine as I suspected. I made another appointment a few weeks later for a real cut - they still would not give him a real cut (after talking to the person booking the appointment they would be able to cut him.) because he was a puppy even though he did fine at his puppy cut. This dog needed groomed - I was also told by the groomer they are not hot from their hair, that is why dogs pant. Even if that is true - they are still hot! I was also accused of saying I would not pay if my dog did not get cut! That was the last straw - I never said that and walked out! Wasted my time and my money. The literal worst. This is the 2nd time I've been turned away because of a random reason. Today the entrance was chaotic & they thought my dogs were too nervous to be seen. Go any where else if you want grooming you can depend on. The grooming itself is of poor quality but at least my dogs were clean. Never going back. read more

Not the cheapest place in the world, but it's convenient and it has a good selection. I buy my dog's food there because their "10 in a year get one free" is a great deal. The people are friendly, too. The groomers are hit-or-miss, though the last two times I've gone have been successful. Unfortunately, they don't keep very close records, so going in and telling them "last time was good" or "last time sucked" doesn't do any good. We had excellent luck doing their dog-training, and they offer lots of free classes, too. read more

While I gave the store 3 stars, it's due to a wide selection of animal items and location. What I did not like is the service. There never seems to be staff around to assist. Service is slow and there was one cashier who appeared to not want to do his job. I did not find the staff to be that friendly which is odd for a place in this field. This is a review for (mainly) their puppy playtime and dog training. A few months ago I brought my pup there for puppy playtime and it was an absolute disaster, one of the "trainers" (Julie I believe her name is) let three dog fights break out (a puppy bullying another puppy). She could've easily prevented these but didn't, I had to shout to break them apart. Also, I had the unfortunate experience of being in her puppy class, my dog got attacked TWICE while in class, she sat there and did nothing not about the dog bullying my dog and for teaching the class. For a 60 minute class we spent 20 minutes doing nothing. My dog is now with a behaviorist because he's so fearful of other dogs. He was fine before our time at Petco, and now he's terrified. We took our shih tzu here to be groomed about four times after we moved to the area. The cut itself was usually ok. I don't like that they only have 4 options for length. We usually like her between two of the options. I'd usually have to do a little trimming here or there to take care of uneven areas or missed spots after the grooming. There was once where they forgot to trim her back nails. Our shih tzu gets weepy around the eyes as is common for the breed, and her face would become stinky. They never did a good job washing her face. She'd still come home with the smell still around her eyes. We called it out a couple of times when dropping her off, and still had the same problem. They tried to upsell us on fragrance products. We didn't want more fragrance, we just wanted her face cleaned well. We never had any issues with that at our groomer in another state. Finally gave up trying to coach them and am trying another place. read more
