My dog was groomed at this petco and he looks horrific. They shaved my Australian Shepherd down to his skin and left his face full and barely cut. Any quality groomer knows never to shave a Aussie down to the skin as it burns. I even showed them a picture of exactly how he should be cut. My dogs are always groomed perfectly at Petco. They look amazing and are never stressed after their spa day, which says a lot since all 4 of my dogs are double coated. A LOT of fur. My friend and I go here often to get fish supplies. First couple times service was great and employees were helpful. Last 2 visits I felt harassed and pressured by an aggressive employee. She forced me into joining the rewards program and told me I couldn't get the discount for the fish I was buying without it. The fish's container was marked with discount. Bridget is the most amazing Petco (or any other store for that matter) employee I have ever been helped by. This says a lot, as I have never met any employee at this Petco that doesn't love their job. Listen to this - It had been snowing all day, only a few days after the Marshall fire had uprooted the lives of so many, I'm trying to get to this Petco after work but I'm stuck in traffic and can't get to the store before close. I walk up, devastated and ashamed that I don't have any dinner for my pup. I knock on the window, just in case, and who comes running up to the front door to ask what I needed? Bridget! Nevermind the snowstorm howling outside, she opened up and grabbed the food i needed and got me on my way! Best customer service I've ever seen. Blue thanks you, too! The customer service sucks! The lady that we got must NOT like her job that much she was rude and made our visit very uncomfortable and unpleasant. The Vet was very nice and helpful although never mentioned she would be giving my brand new puppy shots in the back. I allowed her to get a fecal sample and when she came back and said we were all done I had to ask if my dog had been vaccinated already. Not cool! You need to be sure that the OWNER of the animal is ok with not being present. I have no idea if shots were actually done or what was done for that matter, and there was no way I was communicating any further with the lady that was assisting us. They created an account for me online while I was there and stated I missed my appointment so I have no access to vaccine records. I'll be finding a new vet that has better customer service, that allows the owners to be apart of the visit and communicate properly about everything the visit involved. read more

The Boulder Petco has always been wonderful for us, going on 15 years now since I first became a dog guardian. The grooming team led by Jess is truly fabulous and caring. We've always had great luck with trainers, too, and have taken two dogs through CGC (Canine Good Citizen training) and hoping to do the same with #3 soon. The online shopping is also terrific and we subscribe to the Vital Care Premier program and it's definitely giving us good value on food, treats and services in particular. read more

For the Petcos of this country, this one has always stood out as an exception to the poor care. Their fish are always in great health, and the reptiles and birds are always perfectly clean, fresh food/water, and visibly content. The best they can do with the size of enclosures provided to them. I also appreciate their live bugs. They carry super worms, waxworms and mealies in refrigerated conditions. I've found them to be cleaner, fewer die, and don't smell like some of the local reptile stores. I'm not surprised by the one star review, because these employees ALWAYS ensure their animals are properly cared for, and not all products sold for fish/birds/reptiles are actually safe. An unfiltered bowl does not work for most fish, and if you can't afford the $30 for a tank with a filter- why would they assume you would take the time to do any cleaning or care for the tank. This store doesn't deserve a one star-- YOU do. read more

Dog Grooming I had my dog who was in a desperate need of getting his hair cut, no thrills just shaven, and decided to try out Petco. I scheduled his appointment so he would be the first dog there. It had been over three hours and they're not called me back to say he was done. The response was because they had walk-ins but they need to take care of even though I had an appointment and he was a "difficult dog" because he didn't like getting groomed. Turned out all they had done was bathe him and he was somewhat shaven. They didn't charge me for the grooming because he wasn't groomed. I later had someone come to my house and I watched her the entire time grooming my dog and it took 45 minutes max that was it. He wasn't happy about getting groomed but he got groomed and the woman said he acted like a normal dog and it took 45 minutes. Keep in mind that it's not only Petco that takes 3 hours because of "walk ins" even though you schedule an appointment. I suggest trying to find a mobile or even better someone who comes to your house, which is hard to find around Boulder. read more

Went here to purchase some supplies for my small pet. The lady at the checkout counter was very friendly and the product that I purchased (a Zilla MicroHabitat Box), which I couldn't find at PetSmart or any other stores, is currently working great for me. However when I walked by the reptile section of the store, while shopping, I was in shock. This store already had a much lower selection of reptiles than an average PetSmart, so you would think maybe the standards of care would be better with fewer animals. However that is not the case and all of the reptiles were either being stored in too small of enclosures; in horrid cage conditions (the bearded dragon enclosures were full of poop); or looked very sickly in appearance like a poor leopard gecko, which looked like it was near the verge of death. In terms of supplies this store is ok to decent: they have stuff/supplies, but not a giant selection at this store. However if you plan to buy a live animal (especially a reptile), do NOT buy it here. read more

We had an excellent experience at this petco a few days ago.. My daughter had plans to adopt a guinea pig from the humane society and needed to get a cage and other supplies to prepare for picking him up.. A very knowledgeable young lady who has worked at petco 8+ years helped us... We learned so much from her.. Her knowledge of small animals and their needs was remarkable... Unfortunately we realized that a certain type of hay is necessary for guinea pigs and my daughter is extremely allergic to hay.. So she didn't end up adopting the guinea pig but we came out of there with much new information about small pets and I am very impressed with the level of service at this petco. read more

We stop into Petco for the occasional puppy pad & cheap treats fix. The staff is always nice but there always seems to only be 2 people on the shift every time I go there. This can cause a back up at the cash registers sometimes. The selection is mediocre. I wish they would carry smaller brands that are much greener than the brands they currently carry. Amazing employees here! They are true animal lovers, and more than happy to take all the time in the world to help you find the perfect pet or pet supplies. My favorite part about the employees here is that if they don't have what you're looking for, they don't try to sell you something you don't need... They simply show you the in-store options, and recommend other places to look if they don't have exactly what you want. That goes a loonnng way in my book, and has kept me coming back for 3 years now. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because they don't have a stellar selection of small mammal supplies. My dog is very skidish and her nails needed trimmed really badly. The Petco Grooming Salon did an amazing job taking time to warm up Sprout and ensure she was comfy before she went back to get her nails done. They were so sweet to my Sprout! For the most part every time I have gone in i have been met by a kind and helpful worker. However, recently I've walked out kind of annoyed with my service. I hate being pressured about the rewards program at checkout! I just want to buy my cat food, please listen when I say no the first time. If you ever come face to face with the manager heather walk away. She has no knowledge about anything. Her best advice is "google it" when you have a question about your precious animal. She is not affable whatsoever. I also once saw her yell at an employee after I walked away because she didn't "try hard enough" to get me to join the rewards. The employee told me about the program and I said no thank you and we moved on. No pressure at all. I have seen many employees leave and for most the reason is because of Heather. Heather is a mean, uneducated woman. Petco, as a committed costumer, I would advise you to fix your management at this location. Also all of the animals sold in this store do not seem to be well taken of (it is so so sad). read more

I don't normally shop at Petco, but I adopted a rescue dog that had an adoption fee that included a Petco training class. After talking with the trainer, I signed up for an Adult starting dog class. The first class was good - but no one else showed up so we covered lots of subjects. The trainer talked me into coming at a different time for a class with other dogs of the same age for socialization. My dog and I practiced the skills from the class each day of the week and were looking forward to learning something new. The next class was a disaster. Instead of moving on to the next lesson, there was a new puppy in the class so the instructor started over at the first class, then only covered a fraction of the material. The owners of the new dog couldn't seem to manage to keep their dog from jumping on the other dogs. The trainer was distracted and kept leaving the training area. It was a complete waste of time. The trainer said that I could have an "extra class" but what is the point if you don't cover any new skills and just repeat? On the way out of the store I thought I would grab an item I needed for my dog. The store only had one register open and the line was 10 people long. No one called another checkout person - and no other employees were around at all. Finally someone showed up and said all the registers were broken except for cash sales and started taking people from the END of the line instead of trying to help people who had been waiting much longer. I finally just left my merchandise there and went to Petsmart. At Petsmart we were greeted by a number of employees, asked if we needed help finding things, and when more than one person was waiting at a register, they opened another one. Wait ... didn't I just start the review saying I don't normally shop at Petco, Now I am reminded why. read more

Jacey Horst is an excellent groomer. Our dog, Lucy, is very nervous and with Jacey she was very calm. It's very clear she loves animals and enjoys what she does. Lucy has a really thick coat and she's so much easier to manage after Jacey grooms her. We love Jacey, she's the best! I highly recommend her. read more

I was completely disgusted by my experience there today. In 10 minutes I found a frog wandering around on the floor (not exactly a safe place for a soft-bodied animal who needs moisture!), a dead rat in with two live ones, and not a single employee (except the one cashier) around to help with either situation. I did not look any further at any animals, and I shudder to think of what I might have seen had I done so. Apparently I knew more about the status and welfare of their animals in that 10 minutes than the manager (who was called from some back room for me) or any of her employees (if there were any?) knew after whatever time they had spent there during their shifts (presumably longer than 10 minutes!). The manager said she was "horrified", and rightfully so, but being horrified after the fact does nothing to help the rat who died, and the frog who might have (or might still). It is not acceptable to treat any living creature with such blatant disregard. I will not be supporting such practices by purchasing anything at Petco, and I encourage anyone who cares about the welfare of other animals to do the same. There are plenty of other places from which to purchase supplies (who don't sell live animals), and local shelters with animals of all shapes and sizes (reptiles, birds, ferrets, hedgehogs, and rodents of all sorts) who are looking for good homes. Support these places instead! Ugh. read more

This review is for the grooming service at this Petco location. The staff was very friendly and the price was reasonable ($51 for a basic groom). I have also had my dog groomed at the Green Dog Wash in town and a few other locations in other places. I would say that they didn't do quite as good a job at Petco as the other places I have been. My Aussie/Border Collie is not a particularly challenging dog to groom--I just like to have her butt and tail trimmed. Petco didn't do a very even job, and they only trimmed her butt, not her tail or belly. She looked nice but I just thought they could have done a more complete job. read more

I called to make an appointment for my dog a few days in advance and confirmed my appointment. When I showed up that day to the appointment, I was told there was none on the record. I told them I would reschedule and come back, no problem, but they insisted I leave my dog. It was 11 am and they said to come back at 4 pm. When I arrived at 4 pm they said I was mistaken and her pick up time was 6 pm. They hadn't even started grooming her yet, which means she sat in a cage for 5 hours without being groomed. I had been getting my dog groomed there for almost 3 years, but I am so frustrated by this experience that we are never coming back. Don't take your pup if you expect them to get timely, caring service! They sit in a tiny cage all day! read more

My dog got the worst haircut he's ever had in his 13 years at this groomer! She shaved every inch of him even his fluffy whiskers and eyebrows. My poor Tibetan terrier looks like a rat! The retail staff were pleasant but my dogs experience was not. She was groomed by Zack (I think). I firmly believe she was mistreated and the grooming was not well done. I specifically requested she be de-shedded, when we got home, there were tufts of hair coming out on her hind quarters. She was dehydrated and 'upset'. She has been groomed multiple times and I have never had her react like this. I would not take my dog there. I have gone to a GREAT place in Niwot, Puppy Paws. The owner is fantastic, my dog is excited to arrive there and in great spirits when I pick her up. The only problem is they book several weeks out. But after my Petco experience I will plan better. read more

I shop elsewhere for dog and cat supplies- this review is only for the gerbils we got there. This was literally the only place locally we could find gerbils, and my daughter has been begging for for them for over a year. I was kind of unsure about buying small animals from a place like this, but there was just no other source of supply. We got two males, and they have been super healthy and were obviously very well socialized before we got them. They love being handled, and my kids are just bonkers about them. The staff member who helped my husband was obviously very concerned about their welfare and made sure he was prepared with the whole setup (which we already were) before he purchased them. so the reason I came here in the first place was because I saw a great deal online for a "puppy package" which was really affordable. I mentioned it to the grooming staff and they said they would make note of it and that I wanted those specific services. After I picked my pup up, they seemed confused about the package, and I don't even know if he received all the services that were supposed to be included, but I talked to the manager who shrugged and gave me a little discount on the regular adult groom. fast forward several months and I want to bring him in again for another cut. I called Friday afternoon and asked if they could fit me in, and the woman on the phone said sure, they could do 9am the next day. She asked about his vaccinations and I said that the last time they called my vet was earlier this year and they should still know when his vaccinations are good through, but she says "oh, it says here they expired in October." obviously that isn't true... he's only a year old, he got his shots last summer, and they last a year. she tells me someone must have messed up his documentation (also that "that's been happening a lot lately") but that she can fudge the numbers so that he can come in for the groom and I said great. so we come in the next day and they tell me he can't come in because he hasn't had his shots! of course he had his shots, and their staff has already had that information from his vet, they just lost it. I even had the manager come in who just stared at me blankly and said "his shots are expired" as if he didn't hear a word I said. They weren't even apologetic for their coworker, they just said "oh her? that's why... she messed up". Ugh. Worst customer service, and the first cut wasn't even great in the first place. read more

I can't give these guys any positive comments. I have been in this store 3 times over the last couple of years and each time I was disappointed. My most recent visit is my last. They rang up my goods and I gave them my credit card. Then they said it did not go through so they rang it up again and ran my credit card again. Later I looked at my credit card transactions online and noticed that they charged me twice for my stuff. I went to their store and they said they could only find a record of the one charge and could do nothing for me. I had to go to my credit union and dispute the charge. I used to go here to get my dog's nails trimmed. My dog iooks tough but he's a big baby. I've learned that the best way to trim his nails is to distract him while a trained groomer does the job. That's easiest in the front customer area. It usually only takes about a minute, so intrusion on other customers is minimal. There were some great groomers here way back when, but then I ran into a string of people who had been poorly trained. I gave up and found another groomer. I recently moved so that the new groomer was no longer convenient, and so decided to give Petco another try. About 3 years had passed, and so I was hoping that the bad groomers were gone. I went in this morning with my dog, and they wouldn't even consider trimming his nails in the front area. She was concerned that she might lose her job if he bit me or her--she didn't bother to ask how he reacts to a nail trim. I don't know where they find these idiots, but I certainly don't want them touching my dog. read more
