I had a terrible experience with Petco grooming at the 10708 Fairfax Blvd Fairfax, VA location. And the Manager (Chase) supports this behavior and type of experience. I was running late for my dog's appointment, so I called ahead to ask if I should still come. They told me yes and said it would be fine since "They weren't busy". I drove 30 minutes there, only to be told I was late and that my dog could not be seen. I explained that they had said it was okay and I would not have driven all that way otherwise. After going back and forth with an associate who was extremely rude--laughing with coworkers in front of me and speaking in their own language--she finally agreed to take my dog. Then during the check-in she changed her mind and claimed my dog was "too naughty," which makes no sense. My dog is a 3-year-old mini poodle who has been groomed his entire life, including at other Petco locations with no issues. He behaves like a normal poodle and has never had problems before. What made this worse is that when I went to another Petco location I usually use, they refused service as well because the Fairfax store had called them and told them not to help me or my dog. I went to two locations and wasted hours because three employees at the Fairfax store chose to make things difficult. Very frustrating and unprofessional experience. I will not be returning. Nice staff here. They have employees that know what they speak of. My only frustration seems to be with reptile shortages. To be fair this could be related to supply issues. Yet having to chase after illumination and other products, for my sons two snakes I tolerate is annoying. In this area, not a lot of free time. I like how when you walk in, you're going to be greeted. Also always someone with a dog shopping. This store is of decent size. If you have a dog or cat, chances are it'll be in stock. As a kid, I loved going to Petco and now my kids share that love as well. There are so many little critters to see and look at. Being from Cali, I never saw ferrets for sale at a Petco until I came to this one so that was neat. I was also happy to see that they sell saltwater fish and even some rock and corals. Obviously, Petco isn't known for their quality but they do have fish I'm interested in and are known to be pretty hardy. I recently started a small tank so I picked up a yellow tail damsel and so far the fish is alive and well. I didn't have an issue with customer service, the employee asked if I needed help and was nice. I'll be coming here periodically to see if I can find good deals. read more

Absolutely worst groomers in the world. Completely ruined my Shepherd mixes coats, did not brush their teeth as paid for or cut their nails as also paid for. Completely unacceptable service, to the point I'd consider this animal abused. Coats were beautiful and simply asked for a trimmed. I want to give no star if I can. There are many things I want to say about this store, mostly bad things. They have quite a few selection of animals on sale including birds, mouse, guinea pigs, reptile, fish...etc. I hate to say but these animals are not being well cared. In fact they are living in terrible condition. Looks like cages are so stuffy (that store is very stuffy to begin with, so can you guess how bad in those little cages?) Some birds were trying really hard to put their beaks out through tiny hole to breath and screaming. It was an horror! The employees are even more bothersome. Two young female employees were right there doing something with mouse cage but mostly giggling and running their mouth non stop. I wanted to say something about birds but I couldn't because I already knew these people are not going do anything about it. I am sure it happens everyday that is not a new for them. They even left little mouse in the small paper box on the shelf in the middle of what they call 'cleaning' They were gone! and I didn't know there were little mouse in that box. My dog almost got it. Not too sure how I felt about this Petco. It was a large store with plenty of product for a range of animals along with a lot of different options of animals to purchase. With that being said the manner in which these animals were being cared for/housed was questionable. There were 3 large African cichlids being kept in a 10 gallon tank, no room for any of the fish to even turn around without bumping into one another. Along with the questionable husbandry the employee who helped my boyfriend and I did not seem to care one bit for the fish in anyway. While checking out he roughly tossed the coral we had purchased into a bag, mind you the coral barely had enough water to stand up straight without being exposed to air. Overall it was a strange experience compared to what we usually encounter at our local Petco which we truly enjoy frequenting. I do hope that this review will reach the right people, these animals deserve the best care that can possibly be provided before they find their forever homes. read more

I won't be going back. I've seen too many not only dead but decomposing fish here. Betta that are clearly dying or dead from dropsy, fin rot and the like. Pellets, pieces of fin and poop literally the bottoms of their cups. When I've alerted the aquarium tech, they've always been apologetic but clearly this is a systematic store issue. Sick fish should not be on the floor. Fish should not be dying on the floor. Fish should not be decomposing on the floor. Fish should not remain in their shipping water for days. All of these things are problems that I have told employees and that have never been fixed. When greater than 50% of the stock is sick or dead, THERE IS A PROBLEM. read more

Took my pooch here today to trim nails at the grooming salon for the first time. The groomer was professional and efficient. It was $15 and totally worth it since he wouldn't let me trim his nails at home and they were starting to curl! To be honest, Amanda needs a raise! I called the store before coming in to see if they had small crickets in stock and a cage to keep them. She was so nice and professional on the phone(and they had crickets so win win). I arrived to the store and she was also the person to help me. Petco is fine, I was in the area and I decided to get some bones for my favorite pooch as I've had difficulty in finding the bones she likes at other stores. Petco seems to have a better selection when it comes to this. They have a decent selection of dog related items I can speak too much about the other stuff since I'm really a dog person. The staff is helpful and friendly too. The store is pretty clean although I've noticed both times I was there in the morning that part of the store didn't have lights on I'm thinking maybe this was intentional due to the store getting a good amount of morning sun, so hopefully the put all of the lights on later in the day as parts of the store were pretty dimly lit. read more

There was already someone getting helped, so we waited, however multiple different employees saw us and only one asked what we needed. We told them and they continued on with what they were doing. I came here for a Santa photo and will never return! When I walked into the store I was greeted and I told them I was here for a picture with Santa. The cashier made me pay right away. After that, he said Santa is busy. So I had to walk through the store looking for Santa. When I finally found him he was very grumpy and didn't want to help. He disappeared into a room while we waited outside. When we finally sat down to take a picture, my puppy was nervous and squirmy however neither Santa nor the photographer did anything to help. Instead they were getting impatient. We finally took the picture and it was awful. The background included a sink, an ugly blue backdrop, and Santa looked very unhappy. If you want a pet, even if you don't agree here is what you say..."I think cats should have extensive dental cleanings yearly by a specialist", "Heartworm medicine is essential all year long for indoor cats." "All vaccines for all cats are absolutely essential on schedule." "Yearly well cat visits are necessary, even if the cat has been to the vet for illnesses and follow ups" (for this one, if you have animals already, you'd better have backup that this is what you do.) I wish I could give this place negative stars, but unfortunately I can't! I came in here at 5:50pm today to get 45 Medium Crickets for my Daughter's Toad. I waited about 5 minutes by the Fish and Reptiles area before I went looking through the store for someone to help me. I had found an employee in one of the aisles and told her what I needed. I wish I caught her name, but here's a brief description of her. About 5'8" to 5'10", medium length dark hair, medium build and bubble Butt! She tells me in a rude voice that we don't sell Medium Crickets here, just Small and Large. I told her that I have bought them here before, and she tell me again about that they only sell Small and Large Crickets. Then she takes me over to the area where the Crickets that are bagged and shown me what I had seen earlier. I told her that I have bought them here before, but she cuts me off and tells me that she has worked here for 2 years, and she had neve seen them here before! As I walk away from her, I tell her that they just lost a Customer now! I walk past the cashier up front and a customer is being over-charged something for $4.00! We came here because we were going to Shilla Bakery down the road and had to get some things for our pets. When I got to the cashier, she seemed like she was upset that she had to come to work. I greeted her, and she slowly kept passing the items through the scanner without a word. She asked if I had one of their loyalty cards, and I said no, but I'd grab the form so I could fill it out and bring it back later. Mind you, that I had just gotten one of their refillable litter containers, so that means I am going to have to come back because then what was the point of getting it? She says I can't get one because no one ever brings it back. Ok, maybe it is something that the store manager came up with, but if not, what in the world was that about? For the most part I like to visit this place to get my parakeets and accessories. This is where I also bought the cages and goods for the last five years. The last time I purchased a parakeet here, I took the bird home and noticed that the bird was sick (red eyes, not very active) so I had to take it back to the store and talk with the staff. Overall it didn't kill my experience but I hope they check their animals' conditions with the vets because people value lives just as much as they do with theirs. read more

This Petco is a run of the mill pet store. Nothing exciting, but not bad. I'm giving it a three star rating because my experiences with the staff have not been that great in the several visits I've made to this location. Sometimes the staff isn't available at the registers and it takes them awhile to notice that someone needs to be rung up. Also they're not that friendly. They're not rude or mean, but I get the impression that they don't want to be there or they dislike their job in general. For the most part the store is organized just fine and it is clean. They've made some recent renovations which has made the store a little more appealing. The only reason I return is because I buy special dog food and they have a rewards program that helps me save on the high price of the food. *This business is gun carry friendly. read more

I had purchased a metal crate for my dog, which my dog destroyed within a couple weeks. Petco allowed me to return it with no questions asked. My visit in the store was very pleasant. The staff was very friendly, very helpful in providing recommendations, and also was patient with answering my questions regarding reasons for and solutions to my dogs anxious behavior. The staff was very competent, knowledgeable, and demonstrated high expertise. Additionally, the staff recommended I look to see if the price online was less than in the store which it was, so the staff member price matched their online price so that I could get that fair discount. This was one of the many ways the staff went above and beyond to provide the best customer service. I left the store not only with a new dog crate and supplies but also with more understanding and helpful tips to best care for my dog. read more

this review is regarding the pet adoption event held at this location. The old lady with pink hair is just not suitable for an event like this. All she does is stare in the sky when i walk by her cage and not having any kind of greeting expression and this is very different from other adoption events i go to. And when i asked if a cat is agreesive because there's a tag on the cage saying no fingers the old lady pointed her fingers at me and said do you like it when i point fingers at you while i only lightly scratched the back of the cat. I have never met anybody like her at an adoption event where people should be kind and warm. Sadly i wouldnt want to adopt nor donate to this organization anymore. After returning to retrieve my dog after paying for his grooming session the lady, who seemed as if she was the leader of the grooming salon, was much nicer and apologetic for her attitude earlier. This is a review for 4paws which works out of this and other petcos:I spent nearly 3 hours at an adoption event on Saturday and met a beautiful kitten. Her foster mother was there and said it would be a great fit. The woman who did my interview and had me fill in the application and leave a deposit said I would be sure to be approved and walked around showing me everything to buy. I left my $145 deposit AND bought all the supplies, came home and set them up and was so excited to get the cal about when I could pick up my kitten. And then I get an email saying "sorry there was a miscommunication", we actually won't adopt her out unless you work from home. So, I spent 3 hours of my time, a bunch of money on stuff I can't return AND talked to the foster mom and I can't get the kitten? DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE PEOPLE read more
