I came out of the store with a good feeling that I had gotten new and good information for my new aquarium! I got a bark that would go into the 20 gallon tank that was to be made with 20 gallon of distilled water and a week later we would be ready for the fishes. When we did go, the water was acidic and we were told to go back and a check with a strip - a whole box of which was wasted along with baking soda being added and another week went by and it was still acidic at 6.6. Worrisome and concerning, we added conditioner and others. And then the pH reached 6.8 when the actually helpful associate gave us a good collection of guppies and mollies. Over the next month, the tank that came with its own pump and other things for a sale, kept becoming more and more yellow. The fishes were popping a lot on strings. They were lethargic. And eventually kept dying. First the shy mollies and then the guppies. We rushed back and again no idea. But we were given a wheel that measures pH and nitrate levels. That helped. We rhen YouTubed that tannins are added by natural wood that lowers pH. We removed it, replaced the water. That helped. The pH was stable. Then we added fishes and the tank flourished. But I did not tell all this to the associates since I did not get the sense that the information would have been appreciated. The last nail in the coffin was when I went to get plecos after the tank has developed algal bloom. This was several weeks after I was told that these fishes were being ordered. They were not there. Then I went to pet supplies. They didn't have it too. But petsmart did. And the choice was great! And I really liked the quality of the fishes here. I canceled my costly annual membership. read more

I visited this Petco location for a dog adoption event with a local pet rescue organization. Over the course of eleven years of dog ownership I had visited a lot of pet stores in my day, even though it had been a time since my last visit to a pet store. This store location really set the bar high that other pet stores will need to compete against in the future. The store is completely clean from top to bottoms. When pets are allowed in a store that is hard enough (impossible) for some stores to sort, but in addition to that there was a huge surging crowd of humans at this one too so it is even more impressive their housekeeping kept things well sorted. What really caught my eye on the way out was the deeply discounted toy aisle near the registers. My first dog destroyed toys very quickly so to keep him in toys we usually browsed the clearance/deeply discounted aisle for the ordinary weeks of the year and then splurged on the Martha Stewart and Harley-Davidson officially licensed pet toys for the extraordinary times of the year like his adoption day, v-day, and Hanukkah. So in an area that is decidedly not-Jewish (we're not in Meyerland or Tel Aviv here) I was amazed to see Hanukkah themed pet toys here! I got not one but two which was fantastic, since every other pet store I have visited in person, even in very-Jewish (tm) parts of U S and A, had zero at all times of the year which was a bit presumptuous of them to think that all of our four legged friends do not enjoy existential tsuris on an hourly basis and celebrating a bar(k) mitzvah as much as the next Ashkenazim. I left the adoption event sans new dog which was sad, but whenever things are right to bring the next very-good boy into my home he will have two beautiful festively-themed presents waiting for him at Hanukkah-next. And all for less than the cost of two cups of coffee down at the Starbucks. It might be a schlep from inside the loop but this pet store right here, man. Visit it for pet related things. read more

Just not for grooming. I have long haired toy dogs. They require a different skill set which is fine but just say it. The groomer kept referring to a board with different clipper settings which isn't what I needed. The inspection of my four pound dog for mats was pretty comical. Visited Petco today as I've never stepped a foot into a regular Petco only Unleashed. Anyways, the best pet associate I spoke to was Sarah. Sarah, an aquatic sales specialist has been working at this location for only 2 years and she is so knowledgable about aquarium goods. All the questions I had about fishes, tanks, filters, heaters, saltwater fishes, hoods and aquarium plants she knew. Not once did she give me an "umm, I don't know" answer. She was straightforward, friendly, and very personable. I could tell she loves her job and what she does. That makes me happy. Additionally, the prices are reasonable and seemed a lot cheaper than Petsmart. The shubunkin gold fishes are slightly cheaper here ($2.49) whereas at Petsmart they are ($2.84). I also like how the store is neatly organized and clean. Even the ladies restroom was cleaner than the Petsmart on Bay Area. The fact that they keep all of their animals at the store, except for the dogs is really cool. They have pet adoptions on Saturdays. You can donate your fish you may not want anymore here and they will sell it back for $1. They do free tank water testing here as well. Very neat place. read more

The store itself is fine but their self wash station was not. I got two unlabeled bottles that were what I assume to be water with barely a drop of shampoo that smelled worse than my wet dog. I have a lab and was only given two small rags to dry her off with. All this for double the price of the other local pet stores but I went with the closest one. Would not recommend. read more

This store is clean and stocked most of the time, though they have run out of our filters before and forced us to buy a different brand that fit. The staff is friendly, but they don't find you in the store to check on you; instead, it's usually a greeting when you walk in and friendly service when you check out. Relatively a good place although I think there short staffed. I say this cause it took me thirty minutes if not more to get assistance on the fish. I walked in and met the guy in charge of the fish section but he told me he was on break and wasn't on the clock so he wasn't gonna help. So happen to find the manager and asked for his help, but he skipped me and helped people that came in behind me. Well after my wait was finally over the original guy in the department came back, apologized for the wait and he was very knowledgeable on all the fish. And even on reptiles, he then went as far as reducing the price of the fish I wanted due to the wait which was well over the thirty minute mark. My wait may have also been so long because a lot of people were off that day. So you never know the situation. A friend entrusted two red-eared sliders to me when she went for a vacation in China. I learned, from asking Petco people, that she had been taking care of them in a completely wrong way! Two Petco employees were so nice to me as they explained the kind of cage, food, temperature, and environment that was best for the turtles but never pressured me to get anything. I ended up getting a bigger tank, smaller food pellets, and gravel rocks. They had suggested a heat lamp but I guess it didn't look like it would be within my budget, so they suggested just to not keep them near a window because the temperature fluctuates. I don't shop at Petco as often as I shop at Petsmart, I find that Petco is almost 90% more expensive the Petsmart. The only reason I really shop here is because this location is on the way home from work and if I need to pick up shampoo, E-collar, random pet need and it's a dollar more, I will pay the extra dollar for convenience. Also, I am not sure it's all Petcos but I really don't like the layout. They do not have an even split like Petsmart for Cats and Dogs, which are the most popular pets you typically shop for. I understand there are other types but the way Petco lays out the different areas just feels messy and unorganized. I also feel that it doesn't have all food options as I see offered at Petsmart, i.e. Large Breed/Small Breed Blue Buffalo, Hill's Ideal Balance, etc. I can only purchase these online. The food also never seems to be on sale. The only good thing they have going is their rewards program where if you buy 10 bags of food, you get one free. If you need a quick pet need and you live closer to Petco, this store will have it, but if you want a save a few more dollars I would recommend going to Petsmart. I bought two Gerbils and my girlfriend bought two rats. My Gerbil died in my hands today after only a few months for no reason. My other Gerbil is showing signs of the same sickness, and guess what? At my girlfriends's house the rats have a rat disease they can only get from other rats. It will eventually kill them says the vet. Nothing he can do, but he did say Pet-Co is an awful place he would send nobody for pets. They even sell plastic cages for Gerbils... PLASTIC which they will chew and DIE. Pet-Co treats it's animals as stock and is a soulless corporation that care nothing about the lives of the pets, but rather the money they are worth. This pet-co in particular has a WILD RAT INFESTATION. When I was there one jumped out of a bag of dog food and ran under the aisle. I told an employee and he was blatant enough to tell me they killed hundreds a day with traps and the food store next door had them. What did are they doing about it? Nothing but traps... this puts all the animals in that place at risk and THEY DO NOT CARE. The only thing you should buy here is food or cages BUT READ UP ON THEM FIRST because they things that say "great for etc.." when it could actually kill or make pets very ill. Buy from breeders or rescue them. Pet-Co is AWFUL! They take pets right out of the wild and expect them to prosper as pets... It is wrong! read more

I am very disappointed. I signed up for a training class with my 10-month old puppy. The week the class was supposed to start, the trainer wasn't able to do it. I signed up the morning of the class, so I don't blame him for scheduling something else. We has two sessions on the next two Saturdays. Then I went for the third. I waited 30 minutes in the training room and was in the process of leaving when someone finally offered to find out what was going on. The trainer was sick. I did not get a phone call and no one came to the training room to tell me anything. I went the next week. This time I only waited 20 minutes before calling it quits. I found out after that that the trainer had hurt his back. This is where I have a problem. OK, if someone is sick ... You get a substitute. You call to let the customer know ... especially if you've known for a week! You communicate with your customer who paid good money and organized her weekend to participate in the class. And using the excuse of "I tried to call and leave a message" doesn't work when your customer has cell phone logs and caller ID. I know for a FACT there were no messages. I'm very disappointed in the way this whole situation evolved. I liked what the trainer was doing. He was good. Too bad I could depend on getting what I paid for. read more

The manager refused to sell us a self dog wash because 1. She said it was closed already. Which meant they closed it down half an hour early. 2.She said it was way past the regular closing time which was false and we pointed out that we were standing in line for 20 minutes. 3.She said it was clean already which was completely false. All of the floors and tubs had gunked hair everywhere. We have been coming here weekly for 3 years with my moms dog. I recently adopted a dog and at EVERY Petco and Unleashed they let us wash both dogs in the same tub for the cost of one dog. You changed your policy? Ok, then say that. Don't get a hateful attitude with us saying you have been the manager there for 20 years and it's never been that way! All in all I can say we will be taking our business elsewhere. This is by far my favorite Petco ever! I use to live 2 minutes away from this location and use to visit with my 2 dogs often. The employees are always very nice and helpful. I moved to Kemah & visited the Petco closest to me and it DOES NOT COMPARE! I love the Petco at Bay Area! I even took my dogs to their grooming salon for the first time and they were so loving and affectionate with my dogs! I was very very pleased with their grooming services! The ONLY reason I'm giving them 4 stars and not 5 is because I had my first unpleasant visit today. I was asking for help to the lady at the register (Hannah) and she kinda just blew me off and had an ugly attitude from the start. I ignored it and asked someone else for help. When I went to go checkout she didn't want to honor my Pals Reward that was loaded on my account because "it was popping up" so I proceeded to show her on my phone and she had the audacity to ask "how do I know that's really you" LIKE HELLO LADY IM SHOWING YOU FROM MY ACCOUNT!! I then requested to speak to the manager (Robert) who handles everything extremely professionally and respectfully. I adopted a golden retriever here, and upon a home visit from the most ridiculous animal freak...who stole the animal back because she said it was to be strictly an indoor dog. Petco is very ethical and does not do business with "mills" and they support area rescue organizations as well. In regards to the previous reviewer having their adopted animal "seized"... rescue organizations have seen MANY animals that come back through the system again and again; their rules are in place to reduce that likelihood. Additionally, many of the animals coming through rescue have been neglected. It is not personal, the rescue organization people are trying to make sure the pet gets the best situation that meets their needs. I would suspect that the criteria that the pet be an indoor pet was made clear upfront and I would also suspect that there is a good reason they wanted it to be an indoor pet. read more

One of the volunteers from Second Chance Pets told my four-year-old son to go away from one of the cages because he was disturbing the Pekingese dog that was barking. I was watching him and all he was doing was looking at the dog. That very same lady had just been spraying the Pekingese dog using a spray bottle of water just 5 minutes before that. See, I keep a very particular kind of fish tank in which it's difficult to find the right kind of fish. I've had to deal with false promises and insincere notions from petstores time and time again. Ok so I gave petco a second chance big mistake. First of all I called on Saturday to get an appointment for my dog to be groomed on Wednesday. They told me her records were not up to date. I told them we just had all that done and gave them the name of the place and the phone number to get the records. I show up at 1030 on Wednesday for her appointment needless to say they don't have her records and my vet is acing problems with their fax and petco won't take a Verbal from my vet so here I am at the counter for 45 minutes waiting on the records. I went from being early to now being super late to my appointment. They refuse to let the dog back until they get records. Left us standing there for almost an hour before I finally get the vet to email me the records because petco doesn't have an email address??? Very strange billion dollar company with no email ? Any ways I get them the records and he whole time we are waiting big labs and other dogs keep coming up to my dog growling and barking at her and she is only 12 pounds so she is getting scared. Finally the records get taken care of and they go to take her back I leave her there mind you this is a place I have been using for two years. Within 15 minutes I get a call to come get her I told them I was already late for work I can't they said they would call the POUND and have them come pick her up if I didn't return immediately. At this point I'm upset. I go back to pick up my dog and take her home I ask to the manager who turns out has a pink mowhawk. Very unprofessional looking with her shirt dirty wrinkled and untucked. I can then asked for corporates number which she refused to give me and kicked me out of the store. This location is poorly run and the manager doesn't have a clue. Needless to say this took up 3 hours of my day left me very late to work and my poor little dog didn't even get a hair cut. Don't know what kind of menace she could be I've be n using them for two years with no complaints. Now she is so bad three adults can't handle her. The whole situation was ridiculous and the manager handled it very poorly. I will never go back to this store. read more

This was our first visit to petco an when he ask us about a discount card, coupons or something to that affect so fast with low voice we did not hear him, then my husband said excuse me an then he repeated it extremely slow as if we were illiterately challenged. We just didnt know about petco. Sorry to say if this is how they allow cus. service people to act we will not be back.
