We have used Pete and Max for over 15 years when we went on vacation. I picked up our 3 pups today and rather than being glad to see me,,,,, they could not wait to get out of there. During their stay, on day 2, I was contacted saying they were out of the food I provided. They are all around 20 lbs, I provided a gallon bag of food with a 1/4 cup scoop to feed then twice a day. They fed them a full cup twice a day,,,,,,,,,,, crazy. They called me saying they were out of the food I provided and asked if I could bring more, Well,,, being 500 miles away and having provided plenty of food my options were to have them feed them their food, which worked out to be fine. I was told they were very sorry and would make it right. I picked them up to day, quoted the full bill,,,, the young gal had no knowledge of the issue, no fault of her own, and she graciously gave me a credit which was great and greatly appreciated. I waited what seemed to be a bit long for my pups to be brought out, the gal that brought then was pretty irritated saying that it was difficult to get them ready to go,,,,,,, really???? I get them home and get ready to feed them only to find out that they did not send one of my older girls medications with us in the bag of other stuff. Wow. I called and they have it and suggested I "swing by" and get it,,,,,,, 40 minute drive. This is way out of character for Pete and Macs, so I had a suspision that there were some major changes,,, and yes,,, they have changed hands. I will be looking for a different place to board my pups when we go on vacation and would encourage others to monitor their experience with Pete and Max. read more

I've been taking my dog to Pete and Mac's for several years and she loved it. However, the last few visits haven't gone well. She came home with diarrhea that lasted over a week, then two overnight stays they failed to give her bath each time. She only had the overnight stay to get a bath each time and they failed both times. She was muddy and dirtier at pick up too. I always send extra food, which is gone at pick up. Not sure what has changed with management but my dog no longer gets excited to go like she used to. Very disappointed with the level of service and care she is getting while there. I would not bring our dogs back to this location. We have had 2 different visits that have left our dogs sick on return home. The company called for a routine wellness check and upon returning their call we were told sorry the manager is on lunch and will call back. They never called back and we returned the call 2 days after and provided feedback. They seemed very generic in the response back to the feedback we gave. I droped my 5 month puppy (disney) this place (june 29 to July 8 ) when i went to business trip. Unfortunately this place made my puppy sick. Plus my puupy's psychology was horrible!!! My dog got cold and flue thats mean bordetella bronchiseptica. When i ask them they told me take vet. This place and Managment horrible horrible horrible. Dont drop your dog this place. We've been taking our dogs here for years. There's no substitution for the peace of mind and comfort of knowing that when you're away for vacation your pets will be very well cared for. The staff are great - the familiarity they have with our dogs' behaviors and personality traits is what helps them provide the great level of care they do. The facilities themselves are great - they offer everything you need. We put Bruce, our Great Dane, in the extra large while the other dogs can go in medium size kennels. If you have multiple dogs, they'll put them near each other if you want. Conversely, if you have one dog that has to be walked separately from another, they'll do that too. I like the heated floors, the beds they provide are great, and you call in to find out how the dogs are doing and they tell you. They know what you need and they just take care of it. You don't have to worry. Grooming services are great, too. I love being able to take care of the groom at the end of the boarding stay, and they're just ready to go when you pick them up. Both groomers are great. And as I said the front desk staff and the caretakers are also all great (I like Joey and how he handles Bruce, and at the front desk Brooke and Miranda are just terrific people). If you ask me, this business is all about trust and peace of mind and that's what Pete and Mac's gives you. I have never thought about going elsewhere. read more

I have taken my dog here 3 times and all 3 times I've been disappointed. I decided after giving them a fair shot, I'd try Dogtopia where I had a far superior experience. I asked and paid for baths each time my dog went there and he still came home smelling of urine and poop. One time the staff didn't bother to dry him. The staff is very standoffish and even rude at times. The good thing about Pete and macs is the price, but I'd rather pay more and ensure that my dog is cared for at Dogtopia. If you want a staff that truly cares for your animal, I highly suggest avoiding Pete and macs and encourage giving Dogtopia a shot. read more

I used to take my dogs here regularly for daycare, boarding and grooming. And I was really happy with them. The idea of them getting to run around and play all day while I was at work was awesome! Get that energy out of them so I wouldn't have to spend the evening throwing the ball across the house 500 times. They seemed to do ok boarding, but I was always disappointed that they didn't have webcams to watch the dogs with. They also were groomed every 3 weeks. It was really nice to have an all-in-one place to take my dogs. There was even a trainer there that I hired to do some vacation training once while I had them boarded for a week. I came back and picked them up and they magically knew how to walk better on a leash! But over time, the sparkly started wearing off. It started when I would pick my dogs up and they smelled like urine. That's when I realized that the dogs are inside all day in the daycare room and don't get taken outside to go to the bathroom. So you've got a room full of dogs going on the floor and walking through it before it gets cleaned up. They have an outdoor space, but in the time I took my dogs there only big dogs got to go outside. Small and medium dogs were stuck inside all day. I really wouldn't mind them being inside all day, but I DO mind them being forced to go to the bathroom on the floor as well as walking through other dog's messes. I started to feel something was wrong with their grooming sessions when one day I picked up my dogs (who are super friendly and LOVED going there) and one of them cowered on the back floor of my car and peed. He seemed out of sorts and very fearful the rest of the night. I chalked it up to something maybe scaring him and that he would get over it. But the final straw was when I got a very rude phone call from the groomer the following appointment accusing me of being cruel for letting my dog's hair grow long and that she was going to shave him down. I asked her why and she said he had a matt on his chest. I have a breed that has long hair and I have them regularly bathed, groomed and brushed. Anyone with a long-haired breed of dog knows you deal with knots and matts pretty regularly. WTF? I had them groomed there regularly...I even had standing appointments. Not only was she nasty on the phone, but after telling her several times that I was in the middle of a meeting and could I call her back, she hung up on me. When I picked him up that night, I almost burst into tears when I saw him completely shaved down. I took my dogs here for over a year, and this same groomer even did the dog I had before them for quite a while. I don't know what was going on there, but after that series of events I decided to shop around for a new daycare facility and found one that's so much better and cleaner. read more

My boyfriend took our dog here yesterday and boy did he have a good time! Six hours a day spent outside really tired him out. He got his nails clipped and spent time playing with other dogs. He was so tired when he got hole he could r barely stand up. Well worth the money! read more

Ok this is a difficult review for me to write. I have only used their services once and within a week of that I had to put one of my girls down. Thus, I wasn't feeling super happy about them, I know what happened, in my head, wasn't their fault, but in my heart I will always associate them with my girl dying. But, with distance comes clarity (No, I am not spiderman). This is a super place, they give great service to the bundles that board there and they do care. My friend picked the girls up for me when I was coming back into town. Pete and Mac's called me to check how they were doing - I told them that Harley wasn't doing well and was at the vet. When they called again, hours before I was going to put Harley down, I said I have to put her down so no, she isn't doing well. I really honestly feel really bad about that. It isn't their fault - she got sick - it happens. But at the time it was hard to be gracious. I received mail from Pete and Macs a few days after that call but I didn't open it cause I figured it was a survey and I didn't really want to deal with it. I finally did open it and it brought tears to my eyes. It was a card with words of love and affection for my girl, letting me know how sorry they were for my loss and how much they enjoyed having Harley stay with them. Even now, typing that, it brings tears to my eyes. What an amazing group of people and I am so glad that she was well cared for in her last few days where she was feeling more like herself. So, although my personal experience wasn't super, I know that the girls had a great time and I know that they are a truly caring group of folks. Stella, my other girl, hasn't ever been boarded alone so I haven't take her back but some day I might consider it. Thanks. okaybye. read more

A fantastic place! I've taken my dog there a few times when I go on vacation and he seems to love it. At their 'pet hotel', animals have their own rooms instead of a cage and they get to spend their entire day playing with the other dogs instead of only getting out for a few potty breaks a day. I love it that he gets his own room and doggy bed...but I haven't quite gone over the edge enough to purchase him a room with his own TV (which IS an option, btw). The prices are high, I will admit. But, with the special treatment he gets and the peace of mind it offers me to know he's well taken care of, I don't mind paying the extra money. You know it's worth the money when your pet is so happy he doesn't want to come home! read more

We board our extremely shy former puppy mill dog here on the rare occasion when we are out of town and can't bring her with us. We completely trust that Pete & Mac will take care of our pet to the best of their ability. For example, on our most recent trip, the caretakers noticed that she was very nervous and scared in the kennel so they brought her out to daycare on the one day that we didn't pay for it. I'm not sure if they charged us for it but even if they did, they knew that it was the right thing to do for the good of our pet. That means more to me than a few dollars. We feel good knowing that P&M will give her as good of an experience as she can have. read more

My dog Loves coming here, she has lots of curly hair to manage and they always do a great job on her baths and cuts. We do the play and stay in the morning and haircut in the afternoon. Since she is a puppy this allows her to get some of her energy out. Once they forgot to give her the treats as part of a package I paid for and they refunded the whole package and gave me another one for free! If I had to say something bad about it pick up at 5 is usually pretty crowded. read more

I have 2 Havanese that have been going for Day Care there since they were babies - they love it. All I have to do is mention the name of the place and the dogs go wild -- they get so impatient to go that they practically drag me out of the house. The staff are wonderful and caring. You couldn't ask for friendlier people. My dogs can be a handful and the people never treat them like they are an imposition - which has happened at some other places. *** I no idea why this was filtered - I dont work there and I certainly dont get daycare for free. read more

We recently tried to board our young (5 month old) Belgian Malinois with Pete & Mac's. It was his first time being boarded so we were all a little nervous. The experience did not go well. We came home a day early and went to pick Bruce up after one night of boarding (a Saturday). The first problem occurred simply getting Bruce out of his kennel. I watched the front desk attendant call back for Bruce on the intercom. I waited. And waited. And waited. Three people whose dogs were called after mine were brought out before Bruce. When the lady retrieving the dogs came out for the fourth time and saw me waiting, she asked why I was still there. I told her I was waiting for Bruce. She said no one ever called for Bruce. Perhaps had she been paying attention to the dogs being called (instead of yelling at the nice older lady who did call for Bruce), she would have heard it. When they brought Bruce out (almost 20 minutes after he was called), he wreaked of pee and his belly was wet. She handed us our bag of toys, one of which was drenched in pee. She said something along the lines of, ''He must have got it wet.'' He had peed on it. That was pretty clear. She told us Bruce had diarrhea and that we should monitor his poop. She told us it was normal for dogs to get anxious, especially the first time (which is absolutely true). We took Bruce home to give him a bath and wash his toys, and I noticed I only got back one bag of food. I should have been given two bags since he didn't stay for Sunday night. I called and asked if Bruce has been fed his Sunday breakfast and dinner already. I was told that he had not been fed his Sunday dinner, and that he was only fed Saturday night and Sunday morning. I told her I didn't care about the extra bag of food - I just wanted to know if he had eaten twice that day. She told me she would check and make sure he was only fed Sunday morning like it said in his chart. Only then was I told that Pete & Mac's had given Bruce a stool hardener because of the diarrhea. This absolutely should have been disclosed during checkout. Additionally, they never called before medicating him, which they said they would try before giving him anything. I asked why they didn't call, and I was told that it was normal to bypass that protocol. I told her I was displeased, and she said a manager would follow up soon. A couple days later, a manager did call. I told her I was displeased that we were not contacted before Bruce was given medication, and she replied that the terms and conditions we signed gave them permission to medicate the dog. This is incorrect. The terms and conditions state that they will call and if they can't get ahold of you, then they will treat as needed. They didn't call. They didn't even bother. I then asked if they had figured out how much Bruce had been fed that Sunday. She told me Bruce had never been fed that Sunday. She said Saturday was the only day and that they discontinued feeding because of the diarrhea. I told her I was confused because I was previously told he was fed Sunday morning. She told me that the person I was taking to must have been looking at the protocol and not Bruce's actual paperwork. She admitted this was poor communication. She also admitted that we should have been told during checkout that they had medicated Bruce and that it was a mistake for them to not have told us. She also said that they would try to call in the future before medicating him. That's exactly how it should have been from the get-go. She then explained that Pete & Mac's had been training several new people and that it was a busy weekend. She said something along the lines of, ''Well I do think we took good care of Bruce.'' I disagree. He smelled of pee, was allowed to keep his pee-soaked toy, was medicated rather than fed, and I was unable to accurately tell my own vet his food situation because the communication with Pete & Mac's was so poor. We're now a week and a half out. Bruce has been on antibiotics for 5 days, and his diarrhea isn't getting any better. We took him to the vet this morning, who said he may have a parasite. We're taking his stool in to test. Even though we won't be going back to Pete & Mac's, my fiancé called to let them know what our vet said. Essentially, this was a courtesy call to let them know our dog may have a parasite so they could take whatever steps they need to. Her phone call was met with indignation and attitude. She was told it must be stress, not a parasite. We're ten days out, full round of antibiotics, back in his normal routine. It's very unlikely, says our vet, that it's just stress. Like I mentioned, we won't be returning to Pete & Mac's, which is disappointing given their price point, but I'd rather pay double than have that experience again. I fully expect a dog-boarding service to be able to timely and accurately communicate the care given to my dog. They couldn't do that so Bruce will be going elsewhere. read more

I have taken my little Tucker here a few times and they always do a fantastic job. They work with your schedule, they squeeze you in last minute if they can, and they make sure your pup is loved! My sweet Brodie, a miniature dachshund, was killed while in Doggy Day Care at Pete and Mac's on May 13, 2014. I would not recommend this business to anyone and therefore I am giving it 1 star (I wish I could give it negative stars). His death was an unfortunate accident. An employee, who worked outside of the Day Care area, entered Day Care, slipped on a wet floor and crushed my little puppy boy. Pete & Mac's policy states only Pet Guardians are allowed in Day Care. She was not a Pet Guardian... so yes she broke Company Policy. A Pete & Mac's groomer took Brodie to Blue Pearl Emergency Animal Clinic. What still upsets me is no one from Pete & Macs ever contacted me. It was the Emergency Clinic veterinarian who called to let me know Brodie was dead. I was driving when I received the phone call... I arrived at the Emergency Clinic 10 minutes later and spent an hour holding my little boy. I did talk briefly to the groomer who expressed her condolences. My husband and I thought someone from Pete & Mac's management team would have contacted us... even just to say they were sorry. As each day progressed after Brodie's death, the more disappointed and angrier I became with Pete & Mac's. My husband finally called 6 days later to arrange a meeting to find out what and how Brodie's death happened. The meeting was scheduled for the next day, May 20. The President of the organization, Gay Barwald who lives in Mesa, AZ, was present at the meeting. She told us what happened as I have stated above. We asked if there was an "accident report" which we could see... she said they have "incident reports not accident reports" and she would NOT share it with us. This makes one wonder if she was telling the truth because we find it very difficult to believe an employee could fall on a dog and kill it without somehow breaking their fall. Also, it still bothers me that Brodie's death was just an "incident". When asked why no one contacted us, she responded she "did not want us to start the grieving process again"... and it was only 1 week after he had died. To this day I still get tears in my eyes when I think of him being crushed and how much I miss my little guy. To think his life ended this way after being rescued from a puppy mill... I had always heard such wonderful things about Pete & Mac's however, now I would say the management is very uncaring and insensitive. I will never ever step into that facility again. It really makes me wonder what the goals are for this business... I do want you to know that Pete & Mac's gave us a check in memory of Brodie as per our request... however it was not even near the amount we requested. We in turn have donated this money to the non-profit rescue group that rescued Brodie and allowed us to adopt him... we were so very fortunate to be able to have gotten him... That being said, the check does not even begin to substitute for the lack of compassion and communication by this business, and the pain they have caused us. We at least deserved a phone call. Please share my story with your friends, especially ones who take their pets to Pete & Macs. There are better Day Care facilities available in our area... I have friends who have left Pete & Mac's after hearing my story and are now going elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend and rescued a husky and a couple weeks later, we had to go to Chicago for work. We had never left him somewhere over night so I was extremely nervous. The workers were extremely nice and answered any questions we had. I was even able to call and check in on him while we were gone. Pricing is reasonable and when we picked him up, we even got a report card! We will definitely be returning. read more

We have used Pete & Mac's in Lenexa a handful of times now. Once, we didn't notice until we got home that we received the wrong toys in return. This last time, we left them over labor day weekend. When we picked them up, one staff-person was very rude when they brought them out without the two blankets and two toys we had brought and I asked for them. It took them 4 trips to get all of our stuff back to us, while another staff-person said "are you sure you really even brought that stuff?" Like I was lying to get an extra toy. Then when we got halfway home we realized that my dog's bottom was covered in dog poop, as was the interior of my car. So we had to bathe her immediately and wipe down my entire car. I boarded my dogs here for the first time over Thanksgiving. They stayed 8 or 9 nights. When I dropped them off, they were given a broken bed on a wet floor. We were rushed out, having just moments to set up the bedding. I emailed later to ask about the broken bed. The staff apologized and said it would be fixed, so I assumed I was worried for no reason and my dogs would be fine. A few days in, I emailed to check on the dogs, but didn't receive a response. I emailed because I was unable to call. I emailed again a few days later...no response. When we picked the dogs up, the specific feeding instructions and paperwork about the dogs needs (which they make you fill out) was still in my bag with the toys I had brought and had never been read even though I had reminded them about it at drop off. My two pillows, sheet and fleece blanket were not given back and my poor schnauzer had lost several pounds. I contacted Pete and Macs about this and they still have not responded. I am livid. PETE AND MACS YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS TERRIBLE SERVICE AND I WILL BE TAKING FURTHER ACTION. read more

The people who answered the phone and the pet caretakers are amazing and I am very very satisfied with the professionalism and kind and good care they gave to my !2 year old teacup poodle who has never been boarded before. I will return if I ever need to have her boarded again Again, Matthew, Jake, and the nice woman who held my dog with her during her doing duties were so kind and I am so so thankful for the kindness they showed my Phoebe. The management is also very very concerned about customer satisfaction. Tabitha, in particular was amazing on following up on Phoebe's stay and grooming. Two reviews here have opened up some old bad memories of this facility on Monrovia called Pete and Mac's. Back in 2007 I made the drive from Lee's Summit, MO to board 3 dogs there for 3 weeks during a vacation overseas. I had heard good things about them and bypassed several facilities in the Lee's Summit area just to take my dogs to this Lenexa, KS location. When I arrived to pickup the dogs I was taken back by their condition. They looked dirty and frightened and my German Shepherd was heavily blowing coat which they said was "normal under stressful conditions". I was given a video disc that was supposed to document their fun time at Pete and Mac's but instead documented a fat male teenage employee forcing my frightened German Shepherd into a swimming pool. I still feel like punching this jerk when I think about it. My Shepherd hated water and had back problems. It was inexcusable and appeared to be some sort of macho showing off to a female attendant. I never pursued the incident because at the time I was not so sure I could control myself. I did never go back and for 8 years have told others of my bad experience. The awful story of Brodie below does not seem at all contrived to me. The fact they don't use cameras that can be accessed by owners also fits a possibility that they are stubbornly refusing to let the public see what goes on behind the pretty facade. It has taken me years to write this review and I want to thank Carla A. and Angela K. for speaking up and boosting my ability to express an old anger at a company that appears more profit oriented than truly kind. I went to visit Pete and Macs to review their boarding for both dogs and cats. While I was impressed with the cat area which had a window, I was extremely unimpressed with the dog boarding. Dogs are only let out twice for 20 minutes unless you pay more and then they are let out three times. Really? I'm not keeping my dog caged up all day with minimal time to be out to run, play, etc. Next I went to Paws and Play on Mastin where they don't cage the dogs and allow them to play, sleep uncaged with a supervisor, etc. Hmmm...I wonder what my dog would prefer.... read more

This place used to be great but not anymore. Last year when I checked my dogs in, the place smelled terrible and it looked dirty. My Boston came home with bad intestinal distress, and I had to take her to the vet. The employees there were really rude, and didn't seem to know what they were doing. It was not at all like that in previous years. I called today to check on boarding hoping maybe they have went back to their former glory. No such luck. When my sable was a pup she went to daycare at Pete and Max for over a year or more. At that time, I worked very close to the facility which was wonderful for both of us. When we went out of town we boarded both of our dogs there...now.... you need to know that our puppy was a Rotty and our other dog was a Chow Chow. Not many kennels would take either for boarding. My dogs loved going there and the staff was great to them. My Sable is 10 years old now and Ming, our Chow Chow passed away. We got a new Chow Chow puppy recently....so I went back to Pete and Max to get another bed for our new puppy...They didn't remember me but when I mentioned Ming, the girls at the desk remembered him instantly. They told stories about him and how the remembered how to make his meals due to stomach issues. I was over whelmed that they remembered him after all these years. They asked me to bring by the new puppy just so they could see him and, of course, bring Sable so they could see her all grown up. These care givers for these pets are wonderful. You would half to be to work with crazy pet lovers for very little income. They made all the difference in the world towards the socializatn of Sable. She went to puppy classes, beginner and advanced training classes and remains very well mannered. My puppy will be attending his first training classes soon and will continue through the whole series of training classes. Thank you Pete and Max. I would recommend you serves to anyone. We made an appointment to have our dog groomed all was fine. Got threre and the groomer said oh my he has a lot kink in his hair! " I may have to shave him because of all of the matting". We said no just cut his nails and some hair around his face and stop. They did as requested. We picked him up, they butchered his head fur and when we got him home we easily combed out his fur so it had NO tangles. It was a lot easier for the groomer and that's the the path she took. I would not take my pet here for grooming under any circumstances! read more

Do not take your pet here. I took my sweet, non-aggressive dog to Pete and Macs for a couple nights boarding and doggie day care. My sister picked him up for me and the person bringing our dog to her 'casually' mentioned an incident where my dog had a huge bite and chunk of skin torn back from his hind quarter. The guy said, 'oh don't worry about it" and basically blew the whole incident off. My sister took my dog to the vet immediately where he got no less than 20 stitches and a whopping vet bill (which we were happy to pay to get him taken care of). We tried REPEATEDLY to contact the P&M Lenexa Manager and the VP of Operations out of their headquarters after the Lenexa Manager refused to call us back. All we wanted to know was what happened. The VP told us they video the dogs playing, but then everyone went silent. The attitude seemed to be if we don't respond/call them back, then they will go away. We never asked for one cent to be taken off our bill or for them to pay any portion of the vet bill. We simply wanted to know what happened and they absolutely stonewalled us. I have since heard other bad things about their operations and treatment of dogs since this incident. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS here if you want them to be safe. read more
