Well, it seems I'm on the outs a bit. I like this store. They've had good selection of whatever I need, and more than once the cashier has assisted me on the spot with the app coupons, even when I'm trying to speed up for them. I've sat in line while I've seen the same. Yes it was annoying, but the attention was consistent and it's hard to complain with that. Groomers, this was the first time I brought my beast in and they were helpful, quick to assist me when I scheduled at the wrong place, and got my dog in for his nails and cut without complication. Don't go here they won't sell you a fish!! Never in my grown adult life have i been refused at a pet store when trying to buy a simple easy to care for gold fish!! Oh yes Peter and his manager Hollyann of the aquatic dept thought we were not worthy or able to care for a gold fish and refused to sell. At this stage of my life having been able to care and raise a family of grown adults I find this very insulting. Im sure you would too.. Wow. I usually go to the Petco in Swampscott but they never seem to have my dog's favorite treats (Spot Farms). Peabody sometimes does and is the next closest store to me. However, a lot of times, the website will say the treats are available, but when I get to the store, no treats. So this afternoon I called to be sure and asked if they could hold a bag for me. I really don't look forward to having to shop in this store. I went to pick up the treats tonight and the one associate by the registers (Niko, who was an absolute sweetheart!) was assisting another customer with looking up an order. Niko then started to have a line at the register so she told the customer she'd be right back with her, she just needed to assist the customers at the registers. The line grew and Niko pressed a button to have an associste assist at the registers. No one showed. Line kept growing so she pressed it again. Again, no help. She pressed it a third time and after a few minutes another associate came out, loudly complaining about how she was in the bathroom "as is her right to do". Completely rude and unprofessional. Niko explained the original customer just needed something they had out back and Ms. "I was in the bathroom" threw major attitude at her. Very uncomfortable for all of us standing in line. Again, can't say enough about Niko, she kept her composure and was very friendly to all of us customers in line. read more

This is the most uncaring and unprofessional staff. Someone in grooming cut my dog with shears and rushed her to the pet clinic. No one gave me info or a report. The "manager" was rude and dismissive. Don't being your pet her for grooming. read more

I was just in here last evening. I brought my 12 year old daughter here for a hamster. We have the whole setup, the whole sha-bang. We just need a hamster now. I was speaking to an employee, I think named Paul or Peter (don't take my word for that though.) and I explained how our enclosure is set up. He told me that a hamster doesn't need that much space, and that a normal pet store cage was much more suitable to their needs. my child and I have done research, and we know what's not correct and what is. He wanted to sell us a hamster ball, and said that they need one for exercise and enrichment. I was already sketched out after this experience. My kid was looking at the animals and sees the hamster type that she wants on a little sticker thing. She points to the cage and we find 2 large hamsters together - which is strange already. Even worse, ONE IS DEAD. it is very visibly deceased and looked revolting. My daughter wanted to cry. Naturally, I got an employee, and he said "oh it's probably just asleep." While proceeding to poke and prod at the hamster with a treat/stick. It was not asleep. My daughter was pretty sad, and I decided to not get that other hamster in case of aggression or disease. We left, and will be going elsewhere to find her new pet. Gross. read more

Went in to grab some canned ProPlan cat food. The scanning label on the shelf said $33.99. I go to register and it rings up at 42.99. I question that, explaining that I read the bar code label before bringing it to register and it should be 33.99. I go back to the aisle and take pic of scanning label and then we read over the barcode together. They overcharged me by $9. Cashier gave me $9 adjustment but I think (I may be wrong regarding pet items vs human food) that MA State Law says I should have gotten the first wrongly scanned item for free. When I got to my car, I realized that the OTHER item I bought ALSO incorrectly scanned at $2.19 each instead of the $1.99 on the scanning label on the shelf. Unfortunately, I bought 4 of those at the incorrect price with no adjustment. Buyer beware. Shady. read more

It's clear they don't take care of the fish here. The tanks are all dirty, and I saw at least 5 fish dead in the tanks. There was also plastic bag floating in one of the tanks. To make it worse after looking at the fish for over 10 minutes nobody came over to help. In general the store is clearly not cleaned as much as it should be. These poor fish need better conditions, I'll be buying a fish somewhere else, where they actually care about their well-being. read more

Lovely staff but reptiles are not taken care of. The bearded dragon cages are disgusting every time I go in and covered in poop. I even saw the end of a bearded dragons tail still in one of the tanks and both of the dragons currently in the tank have their tails so It hasn't been cleaned since that dragon lose his tail. read more

Tall ,skinny, older man in the fish department has horrible manners. I had to ask for help after being passed by the same person multiple times. He was rude to me when i told him i had a crayfish and said it would kill all my other fish. (the crayfish is currently coexisting with multiple others in a large tank)When my mother asked if there was a bathroom he replied with "Maybe look at the back of the store" in the most unfriendly tone after ignoring her the first time. I work at a nearby pet store and pride myself in customer service. Along with the rude comments, many of the fish tanks were filled with dead fish, its 1 PM and dead fish could have been scooped. This is some of the worst service I've experienced, I will not be returning to this location or buying fish from him. read more

Took my dog to the groomer inside of Petco and ended up with a shin infection and had to go to the vet.

Shannon is the best groomer there. She always takes her time with our dog. She is the best. All staff were friendly and helpful.

I love Petco as they carrier a wonderful supply of nice quality dog foods. However, I WILL NOT visit the Peabody location ever again as they are infested with pantry moths and now my house is! I should have walked out when first seeing them flying around but didn't connect it to the dog food. I'd brought home a bag of dog food not giving it much thought until a couple of weeks later I started seeing the same months flying around my house. They seem to be getting into everywhere, cabinets, blankets, even plastic containers and cans(around the lids). I've not seen this at the Topsfield store for some strange reasons - only Peabody. Owners should take whatever measures needed to rid them and warn customers to refridgerate or leave unopen bags outside. read more

Tried out this grooming salon for my Maltese. Showed pictures of past haircut and said don't do a boxy face. They made her look like a schnauzer. Asked for ears to be cleaned (part of package I bought- $70+). Picked her up and only one ear was clean/hair plucked and they didn't trim the nails on her front paws (said she was acting up-- first time this has ever happened in her 8 years of life). But the real reason I'm writing this review is the day after I had her groomed here, she developed a double eye infection, and had discharge bubbling out of her nose (first time I've ever seen this happen with a dog). She was having sneezing fits every hour and coughing incessantly. She had some type of irritation on her back leg that she kept gnawing at. This was right before thanksgiving so it took a week to get a vet appointment, during which the symptoms persisted. Over $300 later, my dog had bilateral conjunctivitis that required antibiotic/steroid combo ointment, inflamed ear that required a 2x weekly rinse, and got a wart-like bump on her back leg that she is still wearing a cone for (6 weeks later). Also, she still has razor sharp front claws. Steer clear. Thanks for nothing PetCo. read more

You would not believe what happened to me because of this store... I have two cats and 1 of them has gotten her shots at this PETCO. I've never purchased food from here before and one day I was out of dry cat food and was in the area. I was in a rush and grabbed the last bag of the Friskies Seafood Blend off the shelf. I went home opened it put food in my cat dishes and rolled the bag back up and put it in my cabinet like I always do. Later that evening I noticed small black beetle like bugs around my sink area. I didn't think much of it and just figured maybe they were coming in some how because of all the rain. The next morning there was yellow larvae all over my counter tops.... I kid you not. I'm extremely clean and freaked out and cleaned everything and they kept appearing. I went to work and did some google searches and realized these bugs were coming from my cat food!!!!!!!!!!! I work long days and had to call a friend and ask her to go over to my house to get the bag out of my cabinet before it got worse. Thank god for a good friend... she went there opened the bag and there was webs and worms and bugs infested in it. I never noticed it when just pouring it into my cat bowls because I never looked into the bag. MY POOR KITTIES. It gets even worse. Apparently the two or three days this bag was in my cabinet infested all of my cabinets in the cracks and crevices. I had to purchase a kitchen bug spray which worked temporarily and then they were back again. I called PETCO and the only thing they offered me was to replace the food. Not to replace the hundreds of dollars of food I had to throw out in my cabinets because these bugs can get into anything. When going to pick up the new food the assistant manager was making the exchange and I saw something on the screen that gave him the option of selecting a few reasons why for the return. One being CONTAMINATED BAG. It has been almost a month and these critters are still around and I've been a mess coming home everynight and having to clean them up. Finally, my boyfriend brought a specimen to a friend who is an exterminator and it was indentied as some type of weavil that can live in dry pet food. Im completely appauled by PETCO and the way they handled the situation. I will not be purchasing cat food from them again one because I do think they are over priced and two being because they have bugs in their food that will infest your house if broughten in unexpectedly. I freeze all my dry pet food first now, and the exterminator gave us a spray to get rid of them. BUT I am disappointed PETCO had nothing else to compensate me with other than replacing my food. Friskies compensated me accordingly on there end and I felt when I was talking to the managers at PETCO this was a reoccuring problem for them and they didn't feel like I deserved more than a lousy bag of their overpriced food. in fact the assistant manager let me pick out two bags of Iams and when he pulled the return transaction up he realized I originally purchased a smaller bag and took the bigger bags away and gave me small bags. I am still furious about this situation and I hope no one else will ever have to get through something like it. read more

I love visiting the store to see the animals and browsing goodies for my pets. But when you need help, there is no one around in the store. Not 1 employee and when you try to ask them something they pretend not to hear you and rush off. When I did manage to find someone I asked a few questions about how to care for a particular animal. Boy were they so wrong. My other issue, is why do they hire teenagers who, have their only experience with animals being their dog or cat at home? Where I have a veterinary tech. certificate, applied 7 times to this store and not once got a phone call back. Why don't they want to hire someone with experience AND a degree? Are they hiding something? Is there something wrong with the way they handle the animals and they want to keep is secret? Maybe PETA was right about something. I will give some credit to a small handful of the employees at this particular location. They are always polite and helpful. The rest of them should spend more time in high school and at home learning how to properly care for animals in a pet store. read more

We have had our Westie groomed here for 11 years, since he was a puppy and have had a good experience until February when there seemed to be a major staff change. Since then they have been understaffed, and the groomers we like seem to move on. Too bad they were once well run. We will never go there again ! read more

It's a Petco, so you can't expect much. What I do expect is them to reasonably stock the items they sell. I have a finicky pet who likes a very specific kind of food. Trip after trip to this store finds me staring at a wall full of various cans of food, and the one specific kind I am looking for is always sold out. Hey, no sweat, maybe its a popular brand and flavor, I'll just ask for special arrangements. In a completely friendly way I asked to speak to the manager, who luckily (or so I thought) enough happened to be the guy that actually orders their product. I brought him to the huge fully stocked wall of food and pointed out how this specific brand and flavor was and is always unavailable. We discussed and he agreed to order and additional case each week for me. I have been there 6 times since, and there has been no change in the availability of the specific food I'm looking for. I just don't understand why if they continually sell out of a product, they don't decide to order in larger quantity until they reach what they can see if the maximum they'll sell per week. You'd think this would be "Inventory Ordering Manager 101" but apparently not. I live nearby to this place so despite the higher than usual cost, and lack of inventory that I specifically requested from management, I frequent this store out of convenience. No more! I find the Essex County Coop to be cheaper and fully stocked with the high quality food I'm looking for. They'll get my petfood business from now on. Sayonara Petco. read more

Terrible groomer. I took my new puppy here and had rabie paperwork that they could not figure out even though the dog had a shot less than a week ago, they refused to give him a simple bath. Can never make an appointment to get my pup groomed. When I do it is $65 each appointment and my dog hardly looks touched. They are extremely short staffed. I've had ok experiences before but the last one will forever keep me away from that store. The groomer said if I bring my dog again there may be a lawsuit because my pup doesn't like the hose in the salon. The worst part was that she said it I front of 3 other customers which was extremely embarrassing and unprofessional. I will not be entering this store again and will ensure my friends and family don't either! Also spent $300 for private training course in the store and my dog learned nothing. Amy the trainer does a very good job! They smartly went down to two dogs for lessons during the pandemic. Good selection...we like Hills, and Blue. They will take returns if a product does not work. The store has been clean and neat during 2021, but could use a grassy area outside if possible. Have not used the groomer. read more

I have to say it is worth the 100 mile drive round trip to have my dog Boo groomed by Vanessa. He is 17 years old and she treats him with the kindness and care that an older dog needs . They are friendly do a great job and are always happy to see Boo and I, more Boo I think but they always give me a smile. I just can't say enough good things about this store be it the grooming salon or the staff in the store . For the first time in 8 years of grooming my dog got cut today at this salon. On their behalf they did call me, take the dog right away to the vet and they paid for that and didn't barge me for her grooming. Bella did get two staples and 10 days worth of antibiotics. This rating is for the grooming department. I strongly believe this location should not offer grooming, because the staff has no idea what they're doing. I recently brought my dog in for a nail trim, it took over 20 mins, and my dogs nails are still very long (she has clear nails, I can see the quick). Also the table they placed her on still had hair and debris from what I assume was their last groom. And honestly this was not my only bad experience, I've had 3 different groomers at this location that seemed completely clueless and took FOREVER to complete a nail trim. Very unprofessional, I will not return. Highly recommend going to a professional groomer, their prices are comparable or even lower. read more

I went here the other day to pick up some new supplies for our puppy. I made the unfortunate mistake of having the use the bathroom. It was INFESTED WITH ROACHES. Disgusting, this place is so unsanitary. I left & went to petsmart. I'm not sure how management hasn't been made aware of all these problems. I mean no disrespect when I write this, but it really bothers me when people come on to a website and basically say that anyone who really knows how to groom wouldn't be working at a Petco. I have groomed at Petco for a little over 5 years (in Memphis and now in Peabody) and attended a well known grooming school located in Kentucky and also New Jersey. Not to toot my own horn, because i also work with some very talented groomers at this salon but im only saying this because its unfair to judge a persons talent or lack there of because its a corporate business. Normally, I have decent experiences in this store, but my most recent grooming experience was horrendous. I took my dog to get groomed and was told that she was too nervous and kept pooping so they had to stop grooming her. She discounted the price from $50 to $43. She told me to come back the next day to finish the job. I called the next day and was told to come back. The groomer complained that she was wet (it was raining outside) and said she couldn't cut her hair wet. I responded that I'd pay extra for her to dry her. She said she didn't want to try her because the dog would get too upset. I offered to take her home and dry her myself, and bring her back. She said that she only allotted enough time to cut her hair. I expressed my disappointment and mentioned that I'd just bought and given my dog some all-natural relaxing supplement so that she wouldn't be so nervous. The groomer responded that she can't work on dogs that are sedated because it is against Petco rules & they're very strict. I said that I'd just talked to a Petco associate and told her that I planned on giving the dog the supplement for the purpose of calming her during grooming and she said it was okay. The groomer once again contradicted me. Another groomer, overhearing the conversation, interjected that she thought it was okay as long as it wasn't a medication from the vet. Long story short - I cancelled an appointment this morning so I could bring my dog back to be groomed because she couldn't deal with a dog pooping (isn't that what they do?). I got turned away again and now have to go back on a Sunday morning to get done what should have been done yesterday when I first brought her to be groomed. Bottom line - After Sunday, I will never go back to Petco for grooming again, despite my having gone there for years & despite past positive experiences. This one was bad enough for me to stay away forever. read more

It's a Petco, so what do you really expect? They have the selection of food, toys and other pet supplies that I need, when I need them, and even though their prices aren't the best, they are always fully stocked, so I guess I'm paying more for the convenience than anything else. I generally try to support local pet stores when at all possible, and often find their prices are better or the same as Petco anyways. I wouldn't ever have my pets groomed there or use any of their vet services, but for the basic food and supplies when you have a busy schedule, this Petco is fine. The staff has always been pretty nice and at some points actually quite helpful, and I've never thought the store was dirty at all. read more
