This store succcckkkkssss. They have a TINY selection of dog stuff. Minus food. Poor customer service. It's messy. Won't return.

Sorry to have to make the first review a bad review... but this was completely uncalled for. A friend and I were browsing around the store one evening looking at all the different reptiles. We came across a gecko cage (tank) and while looking inside trying to spot them, I noticed a skeleton of a gecko. That can only mean one thing... no one has cleaned the tank in the time it would take a lizard to COMPLETELY decompose down to it's skeleton. Immediately after we saw a sign posted near the tank talking about how well they take care of their pets... I don't know who is in charge of their reptiles, but someone REALLY wasn't doing their job at all. That is unacceptable. read more

His name is Jim, and he has no business being in management. He is the assistant manager at the Petco in Riverbank. My encounter with him was back in June of this year. I meant to yelp back then, but you know how it goes. And I am still so irritated with him that even now I am remembering to yelp about it. I fell in love with a baby boy guinea pig they had. Normally I don't buy pets from a mainstream pet store, they don't treat them well. But this little guy took my heart right when I saw him. I asked their policy on pet guarantee, and I was told that if there were ANY problems within the first 14 days, they would make sure he was taken care of by a vet. G.U.A.R.A.N.T.E.E.D. Great! So I buy the little guy and bring him home. He was only about 8 weeks old. Come to find out about 2 days later, my new little baby guinea pig had lice. This I discovered when I saw on his black hair what looked like hundreds of tiny bugs squirming all over him. I was mortified, and very concerned for his well-being. I'd already fallen in love with him. So, I contacted Petco immediately to initiate their guarantee of veterinary care. I was told on the phone that I could bring him in to Petco, they would verify there was a problem, and then make arrangements for a vet to care for him. What I found out when I got there was a different story. Jim told me that in order to get care for the pig, I had to sell him back to Petco, and get a refund. Then they would take him to the vet for his care, and in about 6 or 7 weeks, I could try to buy him back. But there were no guarantees that he would still be available to me, and not sold to someone else. I was shocked, and very upset. This was MY pet! There was no way that I would relinquish ownership of him, with no guarantee I could have him back when he was well. And anyone that knows guinea pigs, he would be practically full-grown in 6 or 7 weeks. I'd miss it all! I made my concerns known, and he said that's just how they do it. My daughter was with me and said "Mom, please don't do it." After about 20 minutes of me arguing, I was upset enough that he finally decided that he'd see if there was something else he could do, and would call me later. An hour later he called to let me know I could take him to their vet myself, and that they would cover his treatments. See, Jim. I knew you didn't know what you were talking about. THAT is the policy! He doesn't know what he is doing there, and his customer service is practically non-existent. If I hadn't pushed the issue, I'd be down one baby boy piggie. Don't fall for it. I would like to point out that there are other employees there that have excellent customer service. Especially Chris, he is consistently nice. read more

A few days ago my boyfriend and I decided to bring our small and completely non aggressive dachshund mix shopping with us. We have been regular customers at Petco for the last 3 years and have spent quite a bit of money there over that time. Upon entering the store we made a quick visit to the cat adoption area and noticed the same dog in the mesh cage mentioned by one of the previous reviewers. My boyfriend knelt down to say "hi" to the dog while holding our dog. Suddenly from across the store the dog trainer angrily yells at him "Don't hold that dog up to the cage!" She also found it important to add, "That's MY dog!" She did this in front of a small group of customers who were standing in between us and the dog trainer. It was not only rude but quite embarrassing to say the least. We spoke with the manager who was extremely apologetic but this really didn't seem to help how we felt about the situation. Her unprofessional behavior not only made us to decide not to buy anything that day but also to question whether or not we want to come back ever. There is no reason why anyone should feel intimidated, embarrassed, or upset after leaving the store. It would have been appropriate and entirely acceptable if she would have walked over and politely asked us to keep a distance from her dog . This is a pet store where pets are allowed to come in with their owners. It -was- one of the fun perks about Petco. If it is an issue for other dogs to be near her dog's cage then maybe she shouldn't keep her dog accessible to customers or not bring her dog to work at all. At the very least she might want to consider leaving a sign up near the cage kindly asking customers to keep a certain distance away. read more

To be honest I have had a few poor experiences here, with the employees not acknowledging me or my dog, the employees being rude, and a few other little things. I honestly did not plan to come back but a friend recently got me (well, my critters!) a Petco gift card so I came in tonight. And I am so glad I did. A guy named Matt was especially nice and helpful, and was incredibly nice to me and my dog. The store has also always been clean and tidy. I will definitely be back, and with a new outlook on this store. read more

To the grooming department specifically wendee.. please next time you see a customer trying to ask for help be atleast be nice enough and do not be sassy, I myself is a customer service representative and I respect and show empathy to all customers. Today I mistakenly scheduled my pups to the wrong location and not a hi and hello, she came in to help look for my appointment and as soon as she founf out she said one word then turned her back at me and continued with her duty. As I waited in line today , to buy a few items, I saw a "groomer" be extremely rough, down right aggressively brush the face and ears of a little white dog . The poor dog was trying to get away from her , but their lynch ties would choke him , so he just moved his head back and forth to try to avoid her ! It was obvious the dog was hurting . I told the cashier she's being very rough and it was very disturbing to see, the cashier simply replied, oh he/she probably has some tangled hair . I said doesn't matter, she needs to stop. Cashier did nothing. The groomer realized I was watching her, but still continued. I should of got the manager, but was in a bit of a hurry . So I am calling them to report it . DON'T EVER take your dog there for grooming , no one cares how they treat your dog ! Absolutely disgusting read more

My experience started out rough. I was greeted by this rude employee named Diana. She wasn't at all helpful. She was very stuck up and acted as though she's too to go to help me. She made me feel like I was an enormous inconvenience. So, I walked over to the dog food area trying to figure out witch food would benefit them the best and the manager Wendy offered to help. At first I was skeptical due to my first experience but she was so kind that I gave her a chance. She informed me upon which food would benefit my dogs the best. She was so kind hearted and polite. She helped me get the correct dog food I was looking for and even shared a few laughs along the way! The only reason this place is getting a five star review is because of Wendy and her outgoing personality. Thank you for the amazing service I can definitely see why you're a manager!!! read more

I have never experienced goldfish so abused.... I went to buy some new goldfish and I was appalled. They were in a very small aquarium with blowers/filters blowing them at a new York subway speed, it was exhausting, and I went home and had a panic attack thinking of these fish all night swimming for their lives. They did and Diana the store manager as well as Tiffany and one other young person were so helpful. Friendly staff, clean store. What else could you ask for? I have been to other pet stores and never got spoken to by an employee, let alone had a conversation. Not sure if it is because of the area, or just good customer service skills, but I like it. In the Bay Area, you would be lucky to even get eye contact during your checkout transaction. It is like night and day. These kids working in these stores in Modesto/Riverbank were raised right. It is a breath of fresh air shopping in this area. If we could give this store zero stars, we would. We were attended by Wendy, rude and unprofessional. We took our dog, who has been there twice, and Wendy advised us that our dog had diarrhea and they could not do the trim, but what a convenience that they could give him a bath, that costs $46 but not a trim that would total $56. I advised Wendy, who was trying to justify, by saying that he's only been there twice with them, and just continue to say, she doesn't make the prices. I thought they were professional's, whether it's his first or 20th, doesn't matter, they should know how to handle different dog types. just like other complaints, that I should have reviewed first, they are just being lazy and were not patient with our dog and charged me full price, less $10. Prices is not an issue, it's the service Wendy, so please stop saying, you don't make the prices, of course you don't. She then snatched the paper out of my hand and continue to be unprofessional and said that she would reimburse the worker. Super rude and Petco need to be more better on the people they hire and how they handle over booking their appts because it looks like it causes stress on everyone including our pets. by the way, we don't need a freebie, we paid for the the poor service read more

Ask them questions on dog training and find they are very knowledgeable. Very nice selection of toys especially he chew toys to help your pup with teething, Excellent selection of healthy food plans and treats, They have a very nice large building with close in parking. They offer play times for pups and classes but I have not tried them yet. read more

This place is great for getting sand for the litter box. I love their litter selection especially with Petco offers for $9.99 for refills. They're a great selection of animals from fish, birds, and a great place to adopt pets through the Astro foundation. read more

Thank you, Wendee in the grooming department for taking such good care of my little man! I wish we would have found you earlier! Wendee, was sensitive to my concerns about my pup being cut while being groomed as we had experienced him being cut consistently at our previous groomer. She took her time with Tucker, striving to gain his trust, and reported her findings of his temperament to me. I was thinking maybe he squirmed a lot while being groomed and that was why he was being cut, but I didn't know for sure because my previous groomer didn't say anything about his temperament, and I never confronted them about cutting him. Either way, Tucker was visibly less anxious and nervous when meeting Wendee and when my sister picked him up! This 5 star review is specifically for the grooming department. The girls there are friendly and helpful! In particular is Brittani I have been taking my dogs to see Brittani for at least 2 years if not longer and every visit is always comforting. I have 3 bully breeds and they have the stigma that they are aggressive, mean or whatever, however not once have my dogs ever been treated differently than any other dog. I am very protective of my dogs and I trust Brittani whole heartedly with each and every one of them. They are not small dogs either and she takes the time and care on each one of them, she talks to them, she is excited to she them as they are her. I go in about every 4 weeks. They get a bath which they get down to the skin, most people wonder why I take my dogs there as they have such short hair, well #1 its very hard and messy to wash 3 dogs in a tub and no matter how much you scrub you cant get down to the skin like groomers can. They get their nails cut and painted pink, ears cleaned, Anal glands done. My dogs always look and smell so good. And again most importantly I trust my dogs with Brittani and they trust her. I would never go anywhere else (I would follow Brittani as she is that good) and a sweet girl to. The girls there are all really great, they work hard. They treat your animals as if they were their own. I highly recommend Petco for grooming services. Just like any service don't forget to tip your groomer!. :-) read more

Went to Petco today with my husband to see about getting our two dogs nails trimmed and enrolling our new dog into training. My son has moved and has given me his baby, Oso. It was a bad experience from the start. There was no one in the grooming department and no service available when the bell was rang. We walked on the regular sales floor and decided to pick out some treats. Our new dog, who does need training, started to whine and pull for a puppy. The puppy did the same and both looked excited. The trainer walked up and told my husband, Good thing he didn't get him in a real rude manner. I'm no trainer but his behavior wasn't aggressive. The owner of the puppy walked away and so did my husband. He was headed back to the grooming department and while walking that way was asked by the trainer to keep his dog away from hers. Hers was in a mesh cage that happened to be next to the grooming doorway. My husband went back to the grooming department and waited. The trainer stood and stared at him for about ten minutes, giving dirty looks. I don't think she realized we were a couple because she watched him from the other side of the door, ignored that there was no service available to him and turned around and smiled at me. If she had said anything polite she could have picked up a new client. I walked in with every intention of having her train Oso. This isn't our first experience with this trainer. When we got our other dog we brought her in to shop with us. The trainer was a bit more polite then. She does stare and politely criticize and recommend training. We wanted the best for our dog so we signed her up. After a month of straight cancellations on the part of the trainer we dropped the class, got a refund and tried another school. We thought we'd give this trainer a second chance and now realize not only is she rude but if she doesn't know the difference between excitement and aggression in a young dog she's worthless. read more

Do in part to your animal cruelty at your orangeburge, Modesto, Ca store I will not spend another dime at you company. I went in looking for sales on live stock on your saltwater fish, and your "expert" Joe had three Maroon Clown fish in one inclosure two of which were tearing apart the third. Maroon clowns are highly aggressive fish and are not to be kept in small enclosures of two or more. The fact that the "expert" and the store manger could care less Left me enraged. The treatment of your aquatics animals was ridiculous. I was able to overlook the multiple dead fish in various tanks, the fish are delicate and sometimes don't ship well. But to overtly leave animals to kill each other is uncalled for. read more

My husband and I go into this petco because we are right there shopping at target. We go in there at least twice a month. I could put up with bad service because it's not really hurting anyone, at least not physically. But what I can't stand is the fact that their animals are mistreated. Everytime we go in, and I mean EVERYTIME all the pets don't have water. The little rats and mice never have water. They have two water bottles in the cage for like3 rats or mice and they are always empty. Considering the small amount of water that rats and mice drink how long has it been since anyone checked their water. It is the same for the Guinnea pigs and the cats. We complain every time and it still is the same. How would they like it if they were in cages and had no water. At all. Would they like that. How can they have animals in their and not give them water. When we asked the checker she said the lady from the adoption place that supplies the cats was just there. Really. So did she just decide it to give them water. And what about the smaller animals. The next time I go in there and the animals don't have water I am calling whoever is in charge of animal cruelty in riverbank and tell them that this store is a abusing their animals. Because leaving animals in a cage consistently without water is horrible. Where I work they have a clipboard with hourly sweeps that the employees have to do and initial. Don't you think the confort of your animals is important to do so they aren't deprived of water. For gods sake give water to your animals or don't carry animals in your store read more

Took my boxer in there today had a9 o'clock appointment arrived at 8:30 to drop off my dog and the lady immediately gave me a hard time for being early. Went back at 1030 just to check on the dogs and see if he was ready and as soon as I walked in the door she didn't even allow me to say anything and she said to me your dog is not ready you brought him in super early. I find this lady to be rude and I will not be returning to Petco. read more

I took my 5 month old puppy to the groomers here to get his nails trimmed and the girl did a horrible job. she said he was too young and jumpy in order to file them at all. isn't that your job though? have you never had a hyper puppy before?? his nails ended up being sharper than when he went in, not sure how that happens but it did. they were also splitting in several places. the girls behind the counter were nice, but just did not do a good job. the store is always nice and clean and the people are friendly and helpful. this review is mainly for the grooming dept. read more

The Petco in Riverbank is go-to pet store in the area. Everyone is incredibly helpful, and their love for animals is very apparent. The selection at this smaller Petco is not the most extensive, but the service makes up for it. We take our dog, Alice, to their grooming department every month for nails, ears, and glands (she's a Boston Terrier with very little bathing and hair cutting needs). She absolutely loves the staff there, and gets really excited when we pull up. When we walk up to the grooming check in desk, and everyone says "Hi Alice!" she absolutely loses all of her chill. Kayla is the one person Alice is the most excited to see, and goes crazy when she sees her come around the corner. We are moving out of Riverbank, but will continue to come to this store for Alice's food and grooming. read more

I took my 10 month old chocolate lab in for a bath today (first time being to the groomers) and they were very nice, BUT when I got him back, his undercoat was still very bad (the reason I brought him there and I told them that) and he had dried up stuff on his face? He didn't appear clean. He smelled VERY strongly of cologne which wasn't a bad thing until I realized how oily his fur looked. The fur by his rear end was still pretty damp after them mentioning several times that he'll be completely dry when I pick him up. Definitely not worth the $32 I paid. I wouldn't recommend and I won't be back. read more

Just dropped in to get a few feeder fish and I get some air stones. I've been working on an indoor hydroponic system. So, I have a fish tank that I'm growing vegetables in. I needed some fish to put in the tank to create nitrogen. So I asked for some help on what would be some good fish and was pleasantly surprised by the vast knowledge that Matt had . I thought maybe it would be nice to have some pretty or fish to look at beside feeder goldfish and minnows but in the long run they are the best producers of waste and The Meadows will mass-produce and can be used for other purposes. I know it was early in the morning and there wasn't a lot of customers but I still got great service and I'll be back in the future. read more

Kayla was amazing with my Snow. She befriended her and held her why we discussed what her salon treatment was to be. A time for them to bond. Snow loved it there. AND the grooming was amazing. Deplorable customer service! We asked for help in the aquatic animals department and waited over 10 minutes after it was announced over the P.A. system before asking a second time for help. We waited nearly 15 minutes after the second time it was announced over the P.A. system (kudos to the cashier for announcing it twice) before giving up and leaving the store. Guess PetCo will loose a sale as we will go elsewhere to purchase a pet goldfish and related items. read more

I shop here at the Riverbank store on a regular basis because it's close to my house and have never had a problem. I decided to try their grooming services recently, all I can say is be very careful on who your groomer is.....the groomer I was given was HORRIBLE!! She treated my dog very badly even after I told her he needed someone that would be patient with him because he had never been groomed and was a rescue animal. Needless to say we left there without any grooming getting done! I'm very disappointed and upset to the point that I'm considering on doing my pet shopping elsewhere from now on!!! read more

I called to make an appointment for my dogs to be groomed. I have 2 and I always take my son's 2 dogs also to be groomed. I was told because I stay and watch my dogs get groomed and complained when I saw mistreatment of a dog, that it would have to be approved by the manager. I have never been to this location before. I have moved to this area and was a customer at the Petco in the town I came from. With all the animal abuse you see on the news and videos you can never be to safe. Since PetSmart and Petco have been named, I stay half the time and watch my pets getting groomed and take cute pictures of them. Never have I been refused service by a company. Maybe this store has something to hide, who knows? Since you are not allowed to stay and watch. read more
