Someone was there to slide open the door since I wasn't sure how that was possible. We met April and she assessed Gus and helped me decide what type of cut would be good for him. I usually have a good experience here when I show up to address my goldfish needs. I know times are tough when it comes to keeping a proper staff, but when I showed up today, there was a sign that said they'll be closing at 6pm every day this week rather than 8:30pm. Ok, so I quickly go inside and then I hear on the intercom that the store will be closing in 5 min. So, I wave down a worker across the store and he screams out that it's too late. As I approach the front of the store, he tells me that goldfish sales end 30 min before closing. Ok, so how is it helping the franchise and the economy when stores don't want to make sales? Being from out of town staying at the hotel across the parking lot and looking for something to do to kill some time, I wandered into Petco. It is always fund to look at the different pets and the different products that are for sale. They have the usual fish, amphibians and reptiles. It was fun to watch the animals move around. I appreciated the tortoises and the scorpion. The guinea pigs and mice were pretty cool too. I was disappointed to find that there was only one cat for adoption. Not that I could realistically buy a cat and bring it home. My kitty would never forgive me for that. read more

Every time I come to this place they are closed, then while I'm leaving I see another 2 people attempting to get their animals food and walk away as well. I give up, moving to another brand. I guess if you work until 5pm and stop your life and race to petco maybe you might be able to get what you need. Terrible customer service. I frequent this store almost every other week. Each and every time I shop here, the cashier's seem rude and could care less about the customer in front of them.They are either talking about their personal life to their coworkers, texting, or simply just rude. Today, January 17th at 3:19pm I patiently waited for a cashier to show up. I eventually went looking for one of the employees and asked if there was someone available so I could pay. The girl I spoke with seemed annoyed and said she would be there shortly. She ended up yelling for her co-worker to go up to the register. The girl that showed up seemed just as annoyed as well! On the 17th I placed an order for specialty medicated paw wipes for my dog with an infection. The website said it would arrive no later than the 25th. I had enough wipes at home to get him through until they arrived. I got an email before the 25th saying the order was on its way. A week goes by and I get another email saying my order was on its way. I was annoyed. Two weeks from the order date I got a third email telling me the order was on its way. When another three days went by and still nothing, I called. It was the 5th. I was told it would come on the 7th and confirmed what was in the order as well. That was three weeks after I placed the order and two weeks after the originally promised arrival date. When they finally arrived, I opened the box and it was for another product. When I spoke to customer service on the 8th, I again confirmed the order for the medicated wipes and then told her that they sent me a different product and it was not a substitution. She wanted to start the process to reship. Seriously? So I can wait another three weeks for a medication my dog has been without for two weeks already? No thanks. I demanded an immediate refund and said I would return the incorrect items if they provided a shipping label that paid for the return at Petco's expense. They did give me the refund and told me to keep the item that was incorrect. I should have known better. I used to use auto ship for certain products only sold by Petco. I got an email from them telling me my auto ship was on the way. Two days later I got another email with an apology that they ran out of the product while filling auto ship, which got priority. Excuse me? This was an auto ship. It also said it would take about 10 days to fill the order. Several days later I got another apology email telling me that it would actually be three-four weeks before they shipped. I was really pissed off. I called to complain. They said there was nothing to be done. I immediately canceled not just that item, but the entire auto ship...forever. I had to find comparable items elsewhere. I said never again would I order from Petco. Stupid me. I needed these medicated wipes. At least two years had gone by so I figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt and try again. It was probably just a fluke, right? Clearly not. I will never order from them again. I will always use Chewy. Occasionally, I'll order from Petsmart, which is funny because I think they own Petco. read more

Like a few others, I've got complaints about the grooming department. I've used this location for ~4 years now, and it's always been fine. They're good with my dog, and he comes back to me nicely groomed. Yesterday, I took him in for his appointment. It took about 20 minutes for them to get him checked in, when it's never taken longer than 5 or so before. Then, they said 2-4 hours, which is a huge range and also seems excessive for a bath and a haircut. So after 3 hours, I called in and was told he was almost ready. Again, it's never taken this long before. Overall, I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth and will be looking for a new groomer. Based on that experience alone, I'd give them a 1. But since we've been visiting this location successfully for many years, I'll say 2. I don't know what happened to the grooming department, but it's gone downhill in a very real way. read more

Bottom line ... Do NOT take your animal to be groomed here. Seriously. That's right, folks, I started with the bottom line. Why? PETCO tried to kill me dog. We took my small dog here to get washed and trimmed. My dog is not a squirmer ... he sits still for everything and has been groomed several times before. They clipped a HUGE chunk of his skin off and sliced him under his little arm. I understand that things happen, BUT when we picked him up they didn't say a word about either of the cuts. They weren't in obvious places so I didn't notice them right away. As we were driving home, though, my dog started licking his elbow area and that's when I discovered the cuts. They were scary bad. We took him right to the vet and they were, thank goodness, able to staple (yes, STAPLE) him back together and now he's just fine :) Here's what gets me and the reason PC gets 1 star ... they didn't say ANYTHING to me about it. While the vet was looking at my dog, I called them and they questioned why I didn't come back to the store after I noticed the cuts. Ummm, hello, I was busy driving my poor dog to the vet so they he didn't get an infection and sick! The manager told me the groomer didn't remember cutting me dog. How could she not? He required SEVERAL staples. PC corporate eventually (read: four months later!) reimbursed me for the vet bill, but it was a long and nightmarish process. I can't stand behind a company that treats its customers the way I (and my dog) was treated and that's why I don't shop at any PETCO anymore. Oh, and the fact they tried to kill me dog :( read more

Overall this location has a decent selection of items especially for dogs which is the sole reason I come here if out at this shopping center. Where it falls behind is the staff. Finding help is basically no existent and when you do get to the register to pay the staff here really show that they'd rather be elsewhere. Me and my boyfriend were on the hunt for the perfect hamster- we had spent months and months doing our own extensive research and had found a massive cage, planned the perfect diet, toys, bedding requirements, ect. So today was finally the day we would get our little hamster: we had gone to all of our local shops.. no such luck due to the fact that the employees would say their hamsters (in all honesty) were bitters/non-social/had anger issues. This was off putting since we had thought store employees would handles their animals daily and reinforce this good behavior of being held and being alert. So now fast forward to the Dulles location (our 5th pet store we had visited that day) I had called ahead to see what gender and breeds of hamsters they carried since they were not close to our home by any means. I spoke with an employee named Grace who let me know they had a variety of hamsters to choose from- both male and female. So we make the drive, get there and this place is HUGE and CLEAN. Both inside and out their logo on the outside was visibly shiny. We go in and to our left as you first step into the store is the SMALL PETS SECTION- where we quickly introduced and welcomed by, no other, Grace! She was very friendly and was saying that she takes time to handle the hamsters personally- seeing that they are familiar with being held or touched. I appreciated that and felt that our hamster would have started in a great place and would surly end up in our sweet home. She introduced us to all the hamsters and let us know about their personality and behavior. We made our decision and also asked if we had everything we needed to care for our new pet- everything from a tank to food. She wanted to make sure this sweet animal went home to a comfortable place. I have never had a high opinion of Petco in the past, probably due to the selection (in my local area) but I would gladly go out of my way if it meant that I revived this type of customer service. In an age where you can find and buy anything online- I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. A huge thank you to Grace. I had taken my cockapoo for grooming at Sterling Petco. The groomer ( Margaret) completely ruined his fur she shaved him down almost to the skin in the middle of winter and then got defensive when confronted. Their modus operandi is to say that the dog's fur was matted and proceed to charge extra money. They do this every single time even though the dog is consistently brushed. We booked appointment at PETCO, 22000 Dulles Retail Plaza in Sterling, VA for grooming for my dog and waited for whole month, just a day before the scheduled appointment day, they don't have anybody to groom for the on that day. They asked me to reschedule again and I rescheduled again as advised by PETCO, waited again for one month and the scenario repeated again. It was totally unprofessional and waste of time with PETCO, I will never do business with the PETCO again. He's not afraid of my dogs as one of them gets aggressive when there are other dogs around. He did a great job and both my boys look good and were happy when I picked them up. Well let me tell you just how PLEASED we are with Margaret and her kit gloves treatment with our little baby Spike. The worst WORST grooming experience ever. I'm just gonna keep it short and say, they obviously are NOT professionals in the way they talk, treat the dogs and GROOM them! I have never had such horrible customer service experience in my life! Instead of apologizing and admitting that they were at the wrong, the so called manager had the audacity to get all defensive and show me attitude! I paid a lot of money to get a decent hair cut for my dog instead it looked like they just used the razor to shave him!!! The haircut was uneven and you could see his skin!!!!!! Basically it took 4 hours to shave him, if that's what i wanted i would not spend over 50$, i could have just gotten it done myself! The customer service here is higher than two stars as everyone has always been friendly, however the grooming department is a different story and has ruined my overall rating for Petco. If anyone has dogs with hair especially, I would suggest going to a more specialized groomer. The groomers at Petco ask how you want it cut and then just completely butcher your dogs hair. If you don't have access to someone better, then I'd recommend grooming your pet yourself before resorting to this place. I have been here a few times with my dog. I only return because of how close they are to my house and the fact that their prices are reasonable. Their grooming services are useless. They do NOT do a good job. My dog comes out looking and smelling pretty much exactly like he did when we walked in... I've actually questioned whether or not he even got a bath. When he DOES smell different... it's not necessarily better. It's a very strong, "fruity" (to me, chemical scented) odor. It's for sure not pleasant and DEFINITELY not worth $65+. Most recently, I called to make an appointment, was told they had room that day. I booked the appointment. We showed up right on time...but no groomer. We waited. Several employees helped us and explained she was at lunch. LUNCH... exactly when our appointment was?? Mind you, this was not even close to a normal lunch hour.. it was almost dinner. We waited for almost 45 minutes until the groomer finally came back. She meandered back to an employee room, took her time. Another 5-7 minutes go by, then she comes to the grooming desk. I recognize her voice from the phone call earlier when I booked the appointment, as she tells me she has no idea who I spoke with.. because there is no appointment and there was no time today for anything. Not a single dog was being groomed. She was the only groomer there and had no dogs in the back (another employee had mentioned that before she came back). Not sure what was keeping her so busy for the remaining 4 hours they would be open, but she refused us service after keeping us waiting almost an hour in total. WORST GROOMING EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. My dog was there for 6 hours (he's a toy poodle) and left mangled with cuts. Unfortunately, i was not the one to pick him up from the salon so I could not complain in person. So I in turn called and asked for his cut to be fixed and for a partial refund for all of our wasted time and they gave me a time to come in. When I came in they they asked me to come at another time because the manager was not there. When I finally got in contact with a manager they denied all wrong doing and blamed my dog for cutting himself. I recently took my dog to get groomed at Belly Rubs in Ashburn and had a very different, positive experience. They confirmed my suspicion that my dog is not difficult to groom.
