One caution- It gets LOUD in here! Great spot, party of six tried all kinds of stuff - Blackened Grouper Platter, Cheesesteak, DipperSandwich, salads, shrimp, etc this is a (Safe Bet) I had had the fried grouper sandwich at the other now closed location several times but no longer eat that- Fantastic Fries and Onion Rings. We were on the hunt for a great maid rite sandwich and found Pete and Shorty's...what a great lunch spot. Indoor and outdoor seating (dog friendly). Lots of beer on tap and the highlight was our food! I had th Iowa maid rite and it didn't disappoint with its seasoned ground beef and the "trifecta MOP" of mustard onion and pickle. Omg to die for! My husband had the breaded pork tenderloin - moist on the inside and crispy outside - thoroughly enjoyable! We will be back! Pete and Shorty's was a recommendation of one of my coworkers and we were advised it's a Bay Area staple. The restaurant was very clean and reminded me of a New England bar. The staff was super friendly and helpful even though I had a lot of questions about different items on the menu. They were even willing to modify one of the menu items to make sure that I could eat it. I had never had a Grouper Reuben before and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite item were the white beans with pork. They were very delicious. I wish I would've gotten a bigger bowl. I would definitely come back to this location if I'm ever in the Bay Area. read more

A diner like atmosphere inside. The outside patio was very nice, even the duck was friendly. I am from southern MN and miss our huge cracker crumb breaded pork tenderloins. I had one here quite a few years ago and it was very close to home. Today's was not the same. Breading was flour like, size was very small and it was pounded to very very thin. Always always a winner, the food at this place is old school, home style, and everything that that means. Pure comfort food-they always have amazing soup. Sometimes you do need to ask to warm it up, but it's very good. The service is what you would expect at a neighborhood bar-hit or miss but you don't go there for that. They served a weirdly seasoned pork cutlet yesterday. Last time a friend I was with ordered the pork shank, mostly fat and shepherds pie lacked ingredients, most potato. Great local eatery. Went here with my husband, we are new in town and a neighbor suggested it. It is a tavern ambiance. We ordered two sandwiches and fries to split. The price was fair and the food was good. Definitely suggest the pork tenderloin sandwich my husband got. I don't have a picture to show it but it's a good size, hot, and a unique item we haven't seen on many menus. They have a decent size bar with TVs so you can watch sports games. Our waitress was nice, quick and gave good suggestions. We went on a Tuesday night, taco night, not very busy. We saw they have specials most nights, with a fish fry on Fridays. read more

Came to Pete & Shorty's for their famous beef tenderloin! Decided to come on a Wednesday night which was nice and the place was a bit quieter. Atmosphere: The inside is nothing fancy and exactly what you'd expect for the type of food. There are two indoor seating areas, one is more of a dining room while the other has a full bar and some additional seating. Even though we sat inside, the outdoor area looked very nice. Service: The service was great. We had Lauren and she was fantastic. She was extremely friendly and gave her recommendations on dishes. The food came out quickly. Food: The famous beef tenderloin was very good. It's slow cooked and as a result falls right off the bone. The gravy and mashed potatoes are a nice addition and the portion is large. The cheese cheese curds were also very tasty. The roast beef sandwich and the grouper Ruben were good, nothing exceptional but not bad. The roast beef sandwich was a bit boring and would have liked to have a bit more meat. The Ruben was good but the bread was overly buttery which took away from the overall taste. The apple pie was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Not in a rush to come back but if we are in the area we would come again. read more

Although this place has been open only 15 years, it definitely seems like it has been a part of the community for many decades. Situated next-door to the original Hooter's, Pete & Shorty's serves great burgers and hardy, Midwestern, comfort food dishes. This night I had their breaded pork tenderloin with the fixings of my choice and a side of crunchy coleslaw. I added a side of crispy tater tots doused in beef gravy - super good! Got here just before 4pm; joint was already jammed. Atmosphere inside is noisy and cramped so we chose the patio. Dirty table was cleaned off once the waitress saw us and came out (it's self-seating). Another one came out and asked if we cared for drinks. Since they don't have Yuengling in draught form, we settled on Amber Bock. I also asked if they had happy hour specials. I got a one word reply: "No." It's a Friday afternoon at 4pm and NO happy hour drink specials?! What's with THAT?! Oh, well: these folks must make a ton of money based on that alone! We both started with NE clam chowder. Queen Bee is from Maine, and I do happen to like clam chowder also. This stuff was not the best I've tasted by a long shot...we both ate it though. For one thing: not as warm as it could be. It also had just a moderate amount of clams; no briny sweet aftertaste like one should expect in a good homemade batch of the stuff! When we were halfway done with it, our dear server Brittany comes up and asks if we wanna put in rest of our order yet. We both got Friday fish fry; a word before that, however. Wifey specifically said we weren't ready put in rest of our order so it didn't all come out hurriedly. So it's logical to see she was looking to turn over table(s). Didn't ask how the chowder was, either; nor did she haul away our used tableware. She was only as friendly as she had to be; barely even asked how we were doing, for that matter. Fish dinners were both generous potion of mild and not old-tasting haddock. Mediocre shoestring fries and a two ounce plastic cup of, well: mediocre coleslaw. Fish itself was flaky and not dried out. So overall, I can't see why there are so many 5-star reviews for this joint. $48 bill only garners a $5 tip for Brittany and her somewhat indifferent service. My tip for this little slice of the Midwest is to head back to Iowa where most people wouldn't know what really good food is anyhow. read more

Thank you It was freezing today, we wanted comfort food so we decided on take out from here consisting of Shepherds Pie and a hot open faced turkey sandwich. They were both complete ass. Total waste of 30 bucks. The hot Turkey was lunch meat, instant potatoes (worse than KFC) and canned gravy. AND as you can see from the pics, it was inedible because, well just look at the logo ink ON MY FOOD. Thank God I always split my meals in half and saw this before I ate any of it, got sick and had to miss work tomorrow. No wonder the Pinellas Park location closed. Reminds me of diners from years passed- Mom's meatloaf, Dad's grilled cheese, homemade soups and daily specials. The entrees include Shepherds Pie and pork Shank big enough to share. You will not be disappointed. Along with the inside bar (seats 13) there are 2 booths and several tables for 4. There is an outside area with heaters for those chilly nights. Crispy tots piled up then smothered with homemade chili, bacon, cheddar cheese, jalapeños and sour cream. The fried pickle chips are yummy and served with a totally kickin creamy horseradish sauce that will clear your sinuses! The burgers are solid. Burger # 3 for Tampa Bay Burger week was from Pete & Shorty's. I have driven past this place a bunch of times and always wondered about it, so I decided to check them out for a late lunch. This burger had pulled pork, street corn, and was supposed to have cheese sauce, but I think it was overlooked. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well. The flavor combo was unique. They are known for their pork tenderloin sandwiches, so I had to try one while there. The pork was decent, but the sandwich overall was a bit dry for my taste. I felt it needed some type of sauce to really balance it out. Overall, my visit was decent. My service at the bar was great the whole time I was there. The food was pretty basic bar and grill food. I am glad I got to check out a new spot and try the unique burger they offered for burger week. read more

Never came back to check on us, never offered a refill, brought the check without asking if we wanted any additional items or were done. We were sitting outside, and the patio was open so they weren't trying to flip the table fast. With The exception of the burgers, the food was a C grade. Eating here is comparable to having bad sex- unfulfilling, messy, and just downright bleh! I've been coming here on and off since the mid 2000s, and the food quality hasn't improved much. However, in being fair, it hasn't exactly decreased in quality either. The Shorty Burger is one of the big things here, followed by the meatloaf. I missed Meatloaf Wednesday, so I went ahead with the Shorty Burgers (comes in a set of three) instead. Even in ordering a double Shorty Burger (with hopes that it was better than Krystal's), let's just say that I was a bit underwhelmed. Pretty much two of the thinnest burger patties that you'll ever see, served on a decent bun with your choice of condiment & side orders (i.e, fries). That's about it. What makes up for the lack of taste and food nourishment is probably the beer choices (actually pretty decent). Parking area is pretty much a shared lot with the Hooter's next door (The Original Hooter's), and it can get tight on any given day. There is front entry into the restaurant, as well as rear entry that will take you through the bar. The bar employees are friendly, and the clientele on most days seem to be of the Grumpy Old Men-type ala Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Its.....funny. My sister and I had dinner at Pete & Shorty's Tavern while vacationing in Tampa. Despite months of Yelp research on picking restaurants to try, Pete & Shorty's was a spontaneous decision upon passing. This restaurant was a "seat yourself" establishment. The problem with this method is that occasionally you'll sit there for awhile before someone notices you're new. No problem, we just waited a few minutes before someone came over. Our server was nice and we had no issues during our trip. For food, we had mozzarella sticks to start, I had a club sandwich and my sister had a blackened chicken sandwich both paired with fries. The food was excellent. The marinara sauce was especially delicious! Atmosphere was decent. We sat in the "sun room" area as opposed to the bar. They have a big screen TV out there with the Yankees game. If you go in the women's room, be sure to take a peek under the fig leaf on Michelangelo's David painting... you won't be disappointed! An Iowa bistro in Florida.... I love to just hang out, drink beer, and chat with friends....but add in the food....now we're talking! The place is pretty big with bar seating, indoor seating, and outdoor/patio seating. TV's all around, so you won't miss a game! Friendly servers with great suggestions...and don't miss the ladies restroom. (shh surprise) The menu is pretty extensive with lots of old favorites to bring back great memories. I have had many items from meatloaf (just like mom's), Shepherd's Pie (yummy), French Dip (hello), Pete Burger (drips with goodness), Hot Turkey Plate (you'll need a nap), Pork Shank (shareable)....and the list goes on. I have never had a bad meal here....and can't wait to return! This last visit we sat outside, due to Covid-19; the social distancing was perfect (tables moved apart) and all staff had masks on.
