Living in this town for 4 years we have been everywhere. We ate at this location when it was the coastal cantina. The location is a block back from Main Street and it's a cool little spot. We have had the same waiter as we did when this was coastal cantina and when we ate at southern fresh. Same owner I believe. He is the only waiter I remember having more than twice on Main Street which is really cool. I give props to the owners for this. The food is really good. The location is great. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because they really need to add a few items. Like pulled chicken, Mac and cheese and Cole slaw. Also 4 potato wedges as a side is kinda ridiculous. Why 5 stars? Bringing real BBQ back to Safety Harbor, great outside area and nice crafted cocktails. Was driving by on a Saturday night as I was waiting for this place to open for a while. To my surprise I rolled up in my golf cart and the patio was packed! My son and I got a table out back and ordered a few things. We ended up sharing a 3 meat platter with pulled pork, chicken and sausage. All 3 were amazing. The sides we chose were the beans and potato wedges which were perfectly crispy and delicious. I was super impressed that on day 1 of a soft opening that everything came out great, service was good and everyone around seemed happy. I only can imagine after they get their groove on a bit that this place will get better and better over time. Our server Ted was amazing and was very attentive and busy! Inside they ended up replacing the old bar that was in there in favor of an along the wall style with plenty of chairs. Additionally I would think eventually they will have some inside tables as well. Restaurant wasn't all the way together yet but I'm not going to fault them for anything as it was a soft opening. All in all this is a 5 star review for a much needed BBQ place that also has a hint of BBQ places that were in the Harbor before and can't wait to see how this place does! Saw this place advertised online and really wanted to love it. Very close to our house and we love going to Safety Harbor. Parking was easy which was a plus. Lots of room outside however it was raining and hot out. Inside very small. Six tables in the main dining area. We decided to go to the bar. Also small. No decor nothing on the walls and it's a hot 81° inside. No domestic drafts. Ordered a couple of cans of Coors light $5 each. Next we headed to a table to eat. There are fans in the dining area which made it a little bit cooler and it was not crowded so that also helped. I got the wings. They were pretty big however inside very dry. No blue cheese very disappointed. I really wanted them to have homemade blue cheese to go with it and maybe some carrots and celery. I got nothing. They do have this barbecue sauce you can dip it in but I did not care for it. My husband got the ribs platter. I will say the ribs were very good solid four stars. Really wish they had cornbread too as a side. They have beans, potato wedges, and collard greens. My husband's sides were the wedges and beans. The potato wedges there were four I think you could be a little bit more generous but they were good. Overall definitely a three star experience. Might come back when the weather is cooler and have a drink outside and maybe try the peach cobbler. read more

We had really high hopes about his restaurant from all the reviews on FB and being the owners of Southern Fresh. Very sad to say we were extremely disappointed. The positives are the server was attentive and friendly. The craft cocktails were some of the best in the Harbor. The bbq sauce and beans were the standouts when it came to the food. The negatives. I am so happy to see this venue back up and running again. The live music never disappoints and the free space for our kids to run and play while we enjoy music, dinner, and drinks is like no other in Safety Harbor. Now to the food. Wow, my husband and I shared the pick two meat plate. Ribs, pulled pork, beans, wedges, and Texas toast. The ribs were like none I've ever had. The spice and smoked flavor were unique and so delicious! The pulled pork was great and we loved the unique bbq sauce flavor too! We opted to order at the bar, since we wanted to keep eyes on the kids and we had limited time before they broke down. The bartender was great and worked through a long line of customers quickly. We also watched all the servers do a fantastic job waiting on tables as new customers kept coming and sitting at open seats. Another amazing restaurant by Chef Aaron Stewart and Johnny Zemzicki. First off, I had a warm and welcoming greet as I walked through the front door. As I made my way to the bar I started off with a fantastic old fashioned which was accompanied by a full rack of (fall off the bone ribs, wedges, and collard greens (better than my grandma used to make) The ribs were absolutely to die for. I will be back next week. Phenomenal experience from start to finish. Hats off to you gentlemen. read more

Didn't plan this visit, just happened upon it when we were walking around the Harbor on a Saturday afternoon. Food was amazing. Really great smoked BBQ. Collard greens were the best I've ever had. I was super excited that there was a new BBQ joint opening in the Harbor. Having moved here from TX, we haven't found anyplace that even comes close to what we are used to, and I'm generally a pretty tough sell. I really wanted this to be it. But sadly it was not. Let's start with the good- -Service was excellent. Very attentive and friendly staff. -The space has gotten a nice facelift from it's former self. -Plenty of available parking which is a premium in the Harbor. Now to the not so good- -Pretty limited selection of sides. -There was the unmistakable flavor of an electric assist smoker. It just didn't have that real pit BBQ taste. It imparts a bitter flavor IMO. -Seasoning was a bit uneven in spots. It picked up some dirty smoke in a few spots and there was a heavy chili powder flavor on much of it. It needed much more salt and pepper. -I only had about three legit slices. The majority was just in chunks like pot roast. --The slices I did get were sliced very thick and were incredibly dry. One slice was almost 2" thick. One end piece from the flat was so dry it was actually crunchy like a chip. Not sure if it was just overcooked, poorly trimmed, or if it didn't get pulled and wrapped properly. Either way it shouldn't have left the kitchen. -It was expensive. $30 for a pound of brisket to be specific. For comparison, the other local place I usually go to is $23 for a two meat plate with 2 sides. It isn't a pound but is more brisket than I can eat alone, not including the other meat. I usually get 2-3 meals out of it. I realize this is a new restaurant and they are still working to get it right. The industry is rife with unimaginable challenges so I'm trying to just be fair and honest. I REALLY want to like this place and I hope they get things sorted out (no draft beer, etc) soon. I'll be back some day to try something besides the brisket as the other items I saw looked very good. read more

The ribs are decadent! This alone makes it absolutely worth it to come to this restaurant! I used to live in Memphis and it is rare to find ribs and barbecue that are as good as some of the top restaurants there. This is the place to go if you want some good barbecue! You can literally feel the intention and love put into the long process making meat when you feel the texture and then taste the flavor in your mouth. The restaurant is delightfully spacious and they have three big screens playing sports in the outdoor seating area. But if you want something a little quieter, they have very nice indoor seating with air conditioning. It was cool tonight when we went and they also had the fire pit going, which is one of those smokeless fire pits so you can sit there and warm yourself without having a ton of smoke in your face! The staff was very friendly, and I was able to also speak with the main manager, Aaron, and we had a wonderful conversation. I learned meat that they get comes from a special farm in North Carolina, where they raise the pigs to be higher quality with more natural grazing and special feed than you would get at a normal butcher. You can even purchase some of this unprepared meat to take home and try your hand at it. They have some great pictures on Facebook of the smoker as well so you can see what it's like. For my meal I also had excellent collared greens and potato wedges. My wife was also quite impressed, and we went there as a couple, but this would be a fantastic place to bring a larger party of people. I highly recommend it!
