This is such a wonderful place to take your family or explore yourself. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated and they even have a free parking lot available. Gorgeous hiking trails, ocean and lake views, so much to explore. They have a small gift shop and animals to observe and learn about. Also a very nice play area for kids, plenty of hands on experience for them. I so glad that places like this exist, my sons had a blast here, highly recommended!

I just took my young Sons here and it was a great experience. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, the center was very clean, and there was lots for my children to do and see. The parking and admission are free with no advance reservations required. If you bring children with you tell the staff when you enter and they will give you a scavenger hunt to complete with a prize at the end.

We love this place! If you are looking for things to do with toddlers to do indoors, this place of great -- and best of all it's free! They are currently renovating a lot of exhibits so when they open it will be even better. They are putting in an indoor touch tank aquarium to mimic the back bay and updating their solar system planets exhibit. The kids room has tanks with frogs reptiles and a fish tank asking with puzzles crayons and books. We came when it rained but are definitely coming back when it's sunny to explore the rooftop viewing area and trails.

Free!! This is a fun, but slightly old and outdated looking nature centre. From the car park you must walk down a dirt trail to get to the centre. It was OK with the stroller, but some parts of the path were easier than others to go down. Possibly there is access for a wheelchair/stroller via the staff car park, so instead of dropping off at the top car park, drive down the road a little further and drop off there. The centre is air conditioned, free and fun for littles. There is a great view of the bay area. There is a large aquarium with about 6 fish in it. The best part is the kids room. It has colouring sheets, snakes, toys, puzzles, nature books and lots more for kids to play with. Probably best for ages 4-10. Although it is a little bit old, it's something fun, free and different to do. Once my little gets a bit bigger we'll definitely return. No baby changing facilities. Water fountain/bottle refilling station.

This is a beautiful nature/learning center for children. They have something for every age group. Older children and adults will like the displays about the wetlands. Younger children can choose from coloring, putting together a puzzle, watching live animals ( snakes, turtles, fish, bearded dragon, tarantula, etc), reading books and more. The center was clean and organized. This would be a great place to visit if the weather was too hot or wet to play outside. Admission is free! The view from the center is beautiful and relaxing. I believe this is the nicest place of its kind that i have ever visited. Next time we are in the are we will return.

PBS and Huell Howser have both reported about the Upper Newport Bay in the past couple of years, which is why I finally decided to check it out. I loved it! Reasons: The Interpretive Center, The FISH jumping out of the water, the walking paths, the bridge, the Jet airplanes flying overhead made it a surreal experience, fresh air, the sound of nature, trees, free and ample parking, etc.

I feel a little bit bad not giving this beautiful park five stars, but I'll make my reasons clear…read morebelow. Still, compared to most parks of this size in the US, this is probably a five-star park. And yet. Wow. I just can't believe Newport Beach had the foresight and wisdom to allow this little plot of prime real estate to be a wonderful park for the entire community to use rather than some multimillionaire's hillside estate. When I came and took my photos, I only explored the southern side of the park, which is separated from the northern side by a steeper part of the hill and some shrubbery. It's easy enough to get from one side of the park to the other, but from the bottom, where I started, I couldn't tell there was another half of the park. Most of the southern side is on a hillside that steepens as you walk away from Carnation Avenue. In addition to small grass areas, there are a playground, some picnic tables, and only a few shade trees. Those trees are important, though, because when the weather is beautiful and there's not a cloud in the sky like when I came in August, you probably don't want to be totally exposed. I had walked here from where I parked about three-quarters-of-a-mile away. When I drove back, I noticed on my GPS that the park continued, so I turned left onto 1st Avenue, and who knew? Begonia Park is actually named after Begonia Avenue, which is its northern/western border. This northern part of the park comprises a much larger, flatter grassy area. However, the only trees up here are at the very eastern corner of the park, so again, if you're picnicking on the grass up here, bring something to shade yourself with. At the westernmost corner of the walkable part of the upper park, there are two benches that face the ocean. There was a man sitting at one, so I didn't get out of my car to try the benches, but I could tell that they have a lovely ocean view. These benches are definitely five stars. My quibbles with Begonia Park may be minor, but if the City of Newport Beach fixed them, I'd gladly re-review and bring this rating up to five stars. The first problem is a big one. Despite Bayside Drive being a fairly busy street and despite the fact that two separate concrete walkways go right up to Carnation Avenue right across from Begonia Park's own concrete path to the playground, there are no marked crosswalks at or near the corner of Bayside & Carnation. This just feels like feckless indifference on the part of city planners. In addition to crosswalks, there should be those blinking yellow lights that flash when people are in the crosswalks. The top half of the park has a lovely view, and I like all the open space, but there should be more shade trees and especially benches all around the edges of the park, not just right where the best view is.

Lovely spot to picnic. Kind of tucked out of the way, so always easy to park along the, ha, well,…read morepark. Umm... one thing that I'd like to see? Bathrooms. Bit challenging to "hold it" if you're having a leisurely picnic, curled up with a good book, or catching up with a friend. Sometimes you just don't want to get up and leave the moment. Nice views from the top of the park. 2022: 60/100
