EVERYTHING !!!!!! Bought a brand new Toyota Tundra from Peterson Toyota of Lumberton NC and at 17000 miles it put my husband on the side of the road with a blown motor. Peterson Toyota of Lumberton NC has truly been a pain in the back side to deal with every step of the way from providing updates on the status of the repairs to providing a rental while his truck motor is being replaced. Supposedly !!!!! even though he has had to go back and forth with them on what all they are going to replace. Still aren't positive that they are replacing the motor or just rebuilding it because things don't seem to adding up sometimes. The whole experience has sucked from the start. Having to go up there every two weeks or once a month and renew the rental agreement. Which makes no sense since they have already proven that it was a Toyota problem not a driver problem an Toyota is paying for the rental. An today as we are renewing the rental once again they decide they need to put his credit card on file...... remind you we are almost 2 months into this situation and just now you need his credit card. Why???? It's been a total mess and I have set back and let him handle everything because he can stay calm when ppl do stupid stuff but now I am getting upset with the whole situation and I promise I am not as nice and understanding as he is so they are not going to like me no better than I like them when this is all said and done. The serivce manager George, stated in order to get my yearly inspection the rear windshield wiper was REQUIRED to be replaced. When my husdnad called to tell them not to do the inspection because the state does not require the rear windshield wiper to be replaced or checked the service manager suddenly changed what he stated. Went to view a car that was advertised at $20,500 on Autotrader. When I got there they wanted to slap on a ludicrous amount of fees that other dealerships don't have. $1,000 extra if you don't finance through the dealership. And surprise, surprise... Financing through the dealership was going to be .5% higher than USAA Federal Savings Bank was charging. $2,100 extra for the mandatory "Peterson Advantage Program", which includes a long list of items that are not necessary and I do not care about at all, like identity theft protection... Who goes to a car dealership for identity theft protection? I can understand making the "Peterson Advantage" available as an optional package for people that want to overpay for services they can get for free/cheap, but the dealership makes it mandatory to price gouge an extra $2,100 out of you because they think they can get away with it. Very dishonest business practice. The dealership went out of their way to hide the extra fees in a disclaimer in small text at the bottom of the Autotrader listing that you don't see unless you click "see more" (link included). The disclaimer does not mention that the "Peterson Advantage Program" is mandatory, and it certainly doesn't mention that it is an extra $2,100 in addition to the advertised price. So here's a recap of the absolutely crazy fees they want to charge: Doc fee: $899 - that's nuts, Hendrick Toyota is $749, DriveTime is $299, just to give you an idea of what other dealerships are charging. Outside financing fee: $1,000 - I've been purchasing vehicles from dealerships for almost 20 years now and this is the first time I've seen or heard of a dealership charging you extra because you don't pay a higher interest rate to finance with them. I've always financed through Credit Unions or paid cash with every dealership I've done business with and this is the only time a dealership tried to penalize me for it. Peterson Advantage fee: $2,100 - this is just crazy and I can't believe that it's not optional. It includes 12 items that are absolutely not necessary and are clearly just ways to stick you with more fees. I thought the salesman, Jason, was mistaken when he told me it was not optional, but Demetrius, the finance guy, (not sure what the actual position is called) confirmed that it was mandatory. Tax, title, and fees: didn't make it far enough to find out, but every dealership charges tax and title on your behalf as it's a NC requirement so I was expecting that. I just had a horrible and insulting experience at Peterson Toyota in Lumberton. I am trying to lease a car, and I am looking at different dealerships. I found a car on their lot (2025 Toyota Crown) that showed a sticker price of $50,000. My sales specialist was named Chris. I asked him about leasing the vehicle and he said that he would run it by his manager to see what kind of a deal they could work out. He came back a few moments later with a printed quote. He told me that I had to put $25,000 down on the car to get my monthly lease payment somewhere around $450 a month. Can you believe that? He did not even run a credit check or anything before making me the offer. I am a 74-year-old black man, and I am wondering if he would have made that kind of offer to a white person. I am sorry that I have to go there, but I cannot think of any other reason that a salesman would make such a ridiculous offer other than racism. My grandparents spent nearly $40,000 on a 2020 Ford F-150 and it was completely unsafe and unfit to drive. My grandfather purchased the truck on a Friday and had to return it that following Monday due to every complication that was within the truck. JP the swindler he is promised to take care of everything personally and he would make sure that the truck would be in almost brand new condition, bold face lie to have us trust him my grandparents were without the truck for a month a entire month due to delays and excuses given before being told that the truck could be picked up from the dealership. I couldn't be more disappointed in Peterson Toyota of Lumberton. I contacted them from 45 minutes away because I was interested in a preowned truck they had on their lot. We saw the price online in multiple places and we were ready to buy it. The salesmen agreed with what we saw for pricing when we talked to him over the phone. We showed up the next day and as we were starting paperwork they retracted on their prices and raised it by over $2,000, claiming "there was fine print online that said it would be a higher price." That wasn't the case at all. We searched and searched for any fine print in their listings and that fine print didn't exist. They finally agreed on the lower price, but then told us the interest rate would be over 9%. I knew that was ridiculous, because I have a phenomenal credit score and had already been pre-approved for 5.69%. When I told them that, they then told me if I didn't finance through them, they'd charge an extra $1,000 fee... for not financing through them... (They're basically pushing a 'buy here, pay here' BS scheme so they can make more money). I laughed in their face and walked out. That was two strikes. They then called me three more times in the next 30 minutes saying they could do 8% and then 7% on two separate calls. I said, absolutely not. That was three strikes because I knew they were being dirty. On the third, and final call, they told me "you can use your own bank and we will waive the $1,000 fee for financing somewhere else." Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three and four times... How about NO!!! A few days later, I went to Town & Country Ford In Charlotte, and they were phenomenal! I inquired about a new car online and was contacted by the dealer the next day. They asked if I wanted an appointment to drive the car, and I said yes. An appointment was made for 1 pm that same day. I asked him to verify that car was on the lot and available since it was a hard to find model / trim and I was driving 2 hours for this test drive. He put me on hold ~30 seconds, then confirmed it was there. Right before I left for the dealer, I logged back on to see if this car had a hitch. This is when I noticed "in transit." I called back and asked again for them to verify the car was on the lot and available to drive. After some run around they finally admitted it was in transit and not due for 25 days. I asked why they made an appointment to drive a car that wasn't there, now they just played dumb, saying I don't know who told you that. BTW, each time you call, it says all calls are recorded, so they could find out if interested. They advertise this "BIG DEAL"- one where they offer you over $5k over Kelly blue book for your trade in vehicle. I called the dealership to verify this deal and they were all for it. When I arrived nobody knew what I was talking about when I mentioned The "big deal". Not only that but the dealership offered me BELOW KELLY BLUE BOOK for my trade-in vehicle. They wouldn't budge on the price of the car, nor the trade in offer. After threatening to walk away, they finally gave us a measly 1k more on our trade in. It was a very dissatisfying experience and I will no longer recommend this dealership to anybody else. The gentleman who sold us the vehicle made the experience dissatisfying even further. His name is Demetrius. It was in our contract to get our vehicle's body fixed as it had multiple scratches and they would not go lower on the asking price. After we purchased the vehicle, they left 20 miles left in the gas tank. Didn't give us the spare key. And told us to come back on a Monday to have it repaired. We drove 45 minutes back to the dealership on the next Monday, just for them to tell us that our salesman gave us the wrong date. Again, we were told that we would have to come back another day. (FYI: I was unable to contact him after he gave us an inaccurate time to come back to the dealership for the repairs. He completely ghosted us). Mr. Jean Tanner is truly the only reliable source at the dealership. He was able to give us an appointment to fix the vehicle and obtain our spare key. The staff sucks. Point blank. Even after calling multiple times to check on the status of our repair, employees would take our numbers and say that they would call us back yet no call was ever returned. They put out a flyer saying you could win $10,000 and other prizes, then when you see you could win by the scratch offs and call them a guy on the phone tells you that you most likely won and there is no hitch to win just come in at 2pm. When you get there a bunch of people are there and they are saying "this must be a scam, I have been here for a while and I haven't heard anything" They weren't kidding. They asked for all this info and when they got to the social security number I knew something was wrong and I still gave it to them. Stupid me, they ran a credit report (I didn't know until I got home and got a security alert on email). After 30 mins they came up to me and asked if they could get me lower payments on a 2021 Jeep, would I be interested? (Earlier they asked if I lost my vehicle what would I want to replace it with and I said a Jeep Cherokee) They didn't even mentioned what I won. When I said I wasn't interested in a new vehicle the manager of the people I was dealing with again asked me why I wasn't interested in a deal like they were offering. I said I wasn't here to buy a car, I was just seeing what I won. So, I went up to the desk where the people were doing the "who won stuff" and they acted like we were going to win with a static board that clearly had the 10k, $500 and Yeti cooler winner, what a stupid scam that I am embarrassed to share. We won a $2 lottery ticket that produced zero and the sign board said, you can win thousands more with the lottery. Just to be clear, they actually did a hard inquiry on my credit report. We noticed there were a few tiny spots and asked our sales person if that would be something that could be fixed with no charge. They agreed, and told us to come back on any Monday since that's when the painters come unless it's raining. Well we finally get to go up there on a sunny Monday and everyone wants to act dumb founded at the spots like they have never seen them before and try to charge us to fix them. I talked to the salesman and made an appointment to come test drive and see the vehicle the following day the call was around 730pm. I got off work the next morning, called to confirm I was going to the correct place and drove over an hour to the dealership. When I arrived at the dealership I was told the vehicle that I was there to drive had already been sold but they could sell me something else. This is not the way to conduct business. I should have at least received a courtesy call so I did not waste my time and gas. I believe they knew the car was sold and was hoping I would by another vehicle from them since I was already on the lot. Our truck was towed to Peterson in March. We got it back 6 months later after MANY phone calls. That's the good part. The service department is very shady. They were charging me for parts twice. That's right - twice. We are talking THOUSANDS of dollars!! The motor that was ordered for the truck came with all the parts that were needed to complete the repair. They had also ordered parts before ordering the motor and decided that I could pay for those parts, even though the mechanic had turned them in to the parts department to be credited to my account. Finally I get to the salesperson and he says he is on the lot and the minivan is still there, then suddenly the phone went silent, and was disconnected. Called back, and it took two tries to get to the same salesperson. All I asked was to confirm the price before I don't an hour to get to the dealership. He said he had to take to the sales manager and that someone would call me back soon. Well, that's about it. No call back or anything. On 09/19, my wife and I were in route from Winston-Salem to Sunset Beach. The fuel pump on my 2005 1500 Ram decided to go out and left us stranded on highway 74. The towing service brought the truck to your dealership for assessment and subsequent repair. It was getting late (~7:00pm) and the Service department was understandably closed. After giving you the scenario, below is both the good and bad of our experience. Janera (Service Advisor) - this lady is rock solid. When I spoke with her first thing the morning of 09/20, she was compassionate, understanding and very professional in our discussion. She kept me updated throughout the day and on Saturday once the fuel pump was replaced. Janera is a very effective communicator; a necessity in her position. I picked my truck on 09/23 and it was a pleasure meeting her. Lady at the front desk - I did not get her name, but she was a complete sweetheart when talking to my wife when we were stranded on Hwy 74. Same goes for when we arrived at the dealership with my truck on a rollback. Clint (Sales) - It was apparent from the first impression that Clint was not interested in helping us. He came out and went through the standard prompt about leaving the keys in the drop and detail the issue. I asked Clint if we could get a loaner, demo or rental so we could continue our travel to Sunset Beach. He was very direct that he could do nothing to assist and pretty much stood there with his arms crossed with not even a suggestion on a safe hotel or how we could get to a hotel. If it wasn't for a very helpful tow truck driver, we would have been in trouble. I work for a very large company and manage national account on the service side of the business (22 years in this role). I also travel 40K/50K miles annually and have very seldom ran across someone as inept as Clint was. Top it off, we have exclusively driven Dodge and Ram products since 1996 and have ALWAYS gotten loaners or demos to drive while having repairs and/or service. This experience has left me second guessing my next purchase which is coming soon. The Service Department should get 4 stars, but with Sales putting forth no effort to assist us, I have no choice but give an overall 2 stars. I went to see a few used cars advertised as I was in the Lumberton area and they seemed to be cheaper. Well I was ushered across the street from the used car lot so the sales person could find the Toyota I was looking for. He takes some info and I said you are not running my credit correct? I had my own financing through Capital One and told him this. He says no and 5 minutes later I get an alert that a hard inquiry was done. That made me angry as I hadn't even found a car yet. Next thing I know I'm shown a new car and told the used car was sold and the other 2 are in the works. The best part is the price of the new car is a little over the used car he says. $8900 is not a little. And the "Peterson Package" that they add to every car- unbelievable!!! Comes back with a price without the "package". but the payments are $900/month for 54 months with money down. How does this makes sense for a Toyota Corolla. Needless to say I walked/ran out The sales guy (new in training) himself was nice and considerate but the people he had to report to... well ????The business practice there needs to be reported to Toyota, which I will do. read more

My daughter went in to purchase a 2019 vehicle advertised for a little less than $11,000, she gave a down payment of $3,000 and still by the time she came out of there the loan ended at $17,000 with all the fees and insurances. I had been searching for vehicles for months; and I had spoken to 5 Toyota dealerships by the time I went to Peterson. Within 15 minutes I felt like I was their only concern; and that they would move mountains to make the deal work. I was the most difficult customer to deal with, constantly changing my mind and wanting something for very little; and they remained patient and courteous. I was able to get the exact vehicle I wanted, for a price so low I could barely believe it. This is specifically for the Jeep Chrysler Dodge service center. We recently got a recall on a 2012 jeep. One was for a fuel pump that could cause the car to stall while in motion. Obviously very important. The other was for a sun visor lamp-not important and no resolution existed for it yet. My husband called the day before and explained the situation and they told him to come in early as a walk in. The place was dead and the person we dealt with said they can't fix one without fixing the other until the parts come in a few weeks later...we need to ship the car out next week. The fix for the other doesn't exist! How are you getting parts for it if it doesn't exist?? And why didn't you say this over the phone when we asked in the first place? The claimed to have tried to help us. All she did was sit in front of the computer for two minutes and say she couldn't help us. How is that helping at all? The service department is very ill informed and have obviously not done their research on the cars they're supposed to know how to fix. So very awful. We thought they would be more helpful than this. I hope they hire people enthusiastic about their job or at least pretend they want to help. We called two other places in Fayetteville and in Aberdeen and they both said to come right in so they can fix it. Take note, that is customer service. Not what happened in this place. read more
