Anytime I'm in Belen and after some good food this is my first choice. I've been a semi regular customer since the mid 80's. Yes it's changed and yes some of the food has changed but it's still very good. Their carne adovado is about the best I've had in New Mexico. Good food, good service, roomy parking lot easy to find. Wow! One of my favorite places to eat at has definitely declined! First off when we walked in we were greeted. The phone rang and then the gal who sat us proceeded to talk on the phone while she was nodding us to follow her. She continued to talk on the phone as she lead us to our table. The. She walked away. I always enjoy the tacos plate at Pete's, so that's what I ordered. Well, The tacos recipe has Evidently changed. All that was in the tacos was actually just ground hamburger meat with no seasoning in a shell. Cheese and garnish were minimal. Sad, old school can't always remain old school. RIP Mr and Mrs Torres! Very disappointed. We have eaten at Pete's for 20 or 30 years, and they were always the go to place in Belen for authentic New Mexico cuisine. My wife was a waitress there many years ago. She is a vegetarian, so because so many New Mexican dishes are vegetarian (meat was always a luxury), it has been our place to splurge and have a nice meal together. Today, we ordered dinner to go - we live a ways out of town but stopped in Belen for dinner - and ordered two Chili Relleno plates with green chile as usual. When we got home, my wife realized that instead of the usual green chile on our order, Pete's had dumped a scoop of green chile stew, with potatoes, ground beef, etc. on our chile rellenos. We called Pete's, and they said that is what they do now unless someone specifically requests a vegetarian dish. Some people may like this non-traditional New Mexican dish, but you should have to request it rather than expect a traditional dish and get Pete's new idea of what you should eat. read more

I was in town for business and took someone out to lunch. She recommended Pete's, and I am so glad I came. Turns out, the cook is the cousin of my business associate - she's been working there for decades. Doesn't write anything down, just cooks every day. Crazy! She came out to say hi and gave me a hug, even though she had no idea who I was. Staff was also really friendly - found out I wasn't from NM and brought out samples of different chilis and such for me to taste. I had eaten at multiple places in ABQ known for their NM cuisine. This was absolutely as good or better. The salsa was very flavorful without being too hot - you could really taste the cilantro, onion, and chilies. The chips were crisp, fresh, not greasy, and awesome. The spanish rice was clearly freshly made and probably the best I've ever had anywhere. The beans were seasoned nicely (FYI, they use LARD, you can tell by how rich they are). The red chili sauce on the carne adovada enchiladas was smoky, a little spicy, and some of the best I've had. The carne adovada has the same red chili sauce, but the pork could have been of higher quality. The drinks were refilled constantly and food came out very quickly. Restaurant is very clean and quite quaint - it used to be a home I think, judging by the layout. Prices were reasonable. You can buy their chili sauces, powder, pretty much anything to-go in pint-size containers. hell yes. How do I get this back to Dallas, now? I see several people have given this place bad reviews, and maybe they deserve it. I don't know, but my experience was exemplary and beyond delicious. read more

The staff failed to tell us that asking for fries instead of rice on our kid plates was going to cost extra. Waitress added an extra enchilada to my husbands plate, and we were charged for that. When we got our bill and saw the over charges we asked the cashier ( who is part owner) and she was quite rude. Waitress failed to inform us of extra charges so we left her no tip. Educate your staff how to explain possible charges with substitutes and overcharges. Make sure you ask questions about pricing before you order!!! read more

First off I ordered a bean sopapilla cuz I don't eat meat. There was pork in the green chili. I'm not from NM and had no idea there was pork. The waitress didn't offer to exchange my plate and said it is on the menu they have a veggie option. Yea thanks lady, my fault. Then she comes by later to take it and asks if she should. No shit! Northern NM style. I had a carne adovado burrito, with both red and green chili. I had a bit of the carne adovado by itself, and it was very tasty, but not very spicy hot. The red chilli was nice and hot, but not much flavor except for a nice smokiness. The green however was very tasty with great chili flavor, while not being very hot. The green is also made with bits of potato. Not sure what that adds to the flavor, but the potato was really good. My wife had chicken enchiladas, the tortillas were dry rather than moist and fresh. She also had them smothered with green and red. Her opinion on the chili was similar to mine. We had sopapilla at the end of the meal. They were perfect, nice size, perfectly browned, and piping hot. They have a nice selection of beers, but no margaritas. The restaurant is in an old adobe home right across from the railroad. Been in business since 1949. It is a very nice looking place. Bottom line very good, but not great. There are better Northern NM restaurants in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque, but Pete's is probably the best in Belem. read more

Went 10/13/19 as an out of town guest wanted to go to Pete's. I've never been impressed, but this visit was the worst by far. Wish I'd taken a picture - burnt chile releno, had to discard over a 1/4th of my salad as it was either wilted or ready to be slimy - gross! I greatly regret not complaining to a manager, but not sure they would have cared. Also, my order was supposed to come with a sopapilla, but that never arrived and I didn't feel like pressing it. My two friends fared better until it came time to for them to pay. They used credit cards and the waitress (Linda or Theresa?) rang up each order wrong and gave the credit cards to the wrong person. She corrected the bills, but still handed the cards to the wrong lady. Next time friends want to go, I'm just going to bow out. I'll stick with Fat Sats or The Oasis. read more

My advise is the check your food before you leave this place..and needless to say I was over charged for what I actually got. Pete's Cafe is wonderful. They serve excellent New Mexican food for lunch and dinner. Both the red and green chile are great. The food is not fancy, but it is very good. The restaurant has been owned by the same family for 50+ years and it is located across the street from a historic Harvey House. It is located in an old adobe building that looks like it was once a house. It is full of Southwestern art and charm. We lived in Belen for 8 years and ate at Pete's one or two nights a week. It became like a second home for us. The owners and staff are warm and friendly and take pride in their restaurant. We've since moved to Florida and miss this place badly. Sometimes the service can be a bit slow. But, you are in Belen, New Mexico. Where are you in such a hurry to anyway? Relax, have a beer, enjoy the chips and homemade salsa. Pete's serves beer and wine, but no liquor. So, don't order a margarita, stick with the beer. They have good selection of Mexican beers, try a Bohemia. On Friday nights, they often have a steak and enchilada special. It is excellent and comes with natillas for desert. Pete's takes credit cards, but it is closed on Sunday. The restaurant recently installed solar panels in the parking lot. read more

My husband likes the chips and salsa. Every time we have been here, the food is okay but what is the worst is the service. It takes forever to even be acknowledged when you first arrive, the servers rush you for your order and then your food beats your drinks to the table. Pete's Cafe made me love New Mexican food. When I first moved to the state, I was very disappointed with New Mexican cuisine, even after eating at numerous restaurants in Valencia County and ABQ. Pete's is by far the best New Mexican that I have ever tasted. The salsa is my favorite over any other local restaurant, their combos are exceptional, best sopapillas around, and they have excellent pie for dessert. If I can go anyplace to eat, Pete's Cafe is my choice (and will be for my upcoming birthday). Lovely and cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff. A true gem in NM. read more

Super meal. Great service. Well worth the trip. Be prepared to have to shower out the grease smell from your hair, however.

My daughter asked us to meet her there... and it's not on a main street--it's a little out of the way near the RR tracks and the Harvey House Museum. It's obviously a house converted to a restaurant... and there are multiple rooms. I have to say.. the Navajo Tacos were delicious and the Margaritas were very nice. I normally prefer my Margarita on-the-rocks, but theirs is very nice indeed! We had a lovely lunch in a quiet atmosphere and it was fun. Pete's is awesome! Every time my husband and I go we're happy with the food and the service. We went for a late lunch yesterday, we were in and out within 20 mins and the food was delicious. These are my, "stomping grounds" make no mistake. I grew up across the street from Pete's Cafe. My husbands family, lived there too. When it was a house, not a restaurant serving hundreds of awesome New Mexicans. Mrs. Torres always made you feel like family. In-fact, back then, they all did. That certainly was not my Expierence today, as my precious mother n law decided she would like to visit where she once called home so many years ago. The Good: the restaurant is decorated uniquely. The Bad: Our food was not at the correct temperatures. It was of concern, since our precious sons were also dinning with us. Every five to ten minutes, the staff kept trying to take our plates. They kept interrupting our lunch conversations. It was very annoying, and very unprofessional. I had to keep repeating myself, "Sorry, we are not done yet." It didn't happen once... Or twice.... Or three times... It happened, more than I wanted to remember. Instead of reminiscing about the, "good ole days" it, was replaced with, "annoying interruptions." I was very embarrassed by this behavior. My Mother n law, as well as all of us felt rushed, and invisible. The plates and silverware got more attention than our feelings. I called 20 minutes ago to let a manager know, my horrid Expierence. Her name was Marie. I explained every detail, of our meal. And, how upsetting it was. I explained to her, why we couldn't even enjoy are half warmed meal, which eventually turned cold, do to the constant worry of the staff, getting their, "dishes" back to the kitchen safe and sound. Marie the manager I spoke to, plainly said.... "I'm sorry" I'll talk to the staff. That was the extent of her offer, to rectify a miserable Expierence at her restaurant. There was no offer to please come back and see us again. There wasn't even a sincere, "how can I make this up to you mam?" I'm afraid when that Precious soul departed this earth, the love and concern went with her as well. Mrs. Torres loved her customers... Right across from the Harvey House Museum, this sizeable restaurant is not being given enough credit. The food is really good, although I would put the red stuff on the side and use it sparingly.
