There is so much that could be improved at this location. I've lived in this community for many years, and I truly believe in supporting local businesses. Unfortunately, this Pete's doesn't feel like it's invested in serving the community the way other locations do. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels different. The overall vibe is off compared to other Pete's stores, and the shopping experience just isn't as welcoming. The biggest issue is the pricing versus the value. I understand that groceries are expensive everywhere, but the prices at this location don't seem to match what you're getting. For example, a $10.99 rotisserie chicken barely has any meat on it. Tortillas, eggs, cheese, and even coffee are all significantly overpriced. FYI- this has been ongoing through all the years I've been in the area (I have some pics from different occasions and different places where the difference in price and product shows and speaks volume. When I shop at other Pete's locations, I can often purchase nearly twice as many groceries for about the same amount of money, and I leave feeling like I got good value. That simply hasn't been my experience here. I've also purchased fresh guacamole from this location that spoiled in less than two days, which was very disappointing. I want to support this store because it's part of my community, but there needs to be better consistency in pricing, product quality, freshness, and overall value. We've been noticing that a lot of the produce that we buy looks good but actually isn't. I think things are not stored properly and they are going bad. We bought avocados & they were still a little green but when we went to cut them open the next day they were all black on the inside. This has also happened with cactus fruit and mangos that were also just ripening. One time we bought milk and of course it wasn't yet expired. When we went to open it, it was already spoiled. Also a couple weeks ago my husband and I were going to buy a piece of chicharrón and we looked inside the container and there was mold all over. We are deciding to no longer shop here. I gave this place multiple chances because it is closest to us and I've enjoyed shopping at the Pete's on 47th. But the quality here is just not okay !!! read more

I only stop in here if I need one or two items and don't feel like going a mile north to my beloved Aldi. The three words that I would use to describe this store are : convenient, clean, and congested. MEMORY LANE and a little history This store was originally a Jewel and I don't remember it being congested. Sadly it closed and was vacant for awhile. It was good to see a new resident in the vacant store. I believe this was the first Pete's Fresh Market and it was called "Pete's Market" when it opened at this location nearly 30 years ago. Back then, the produce was actually very fresh. I am not sure when they became "Pete's FRESH Market" , but in recent years, the produce does not always seem that fresh to me. Also, ptices were originally fairly reasonable, but now they seem comparable to Jewel or Mariano's - - although I haven't shopped at a Jewel or Mariano's in years and may be wrong - - but I have a feeling that I am not :) PARKING This location does have plenty of parking. There is the original parking lot to the south of the building and a big lot to the north of the building. They also added additional parking on the SW corner of 58th and Kedzie. There is also plenty of street parking. Speaking of streets, 58th Street dead ends at the alley west of Kedzie. THE BUILDING Although the produce area is not too bad, the aisles with the other groceries are quite claustrophobic. Not only are they narrow, but most of them have large pillars blocking the already narrow aisles. Even when the store isn't busy - - and it frequently is - - it is difficult to get down the aisles - - seems like other customers are always in the aisle I need to navigate! CUSTOMER SERVICE In past years, I have found customer service to be accommodating if I had a concern. Cashiers, although not much for conversation, are usually efficient and pleasant enough. I have been going to this petes for over 5 years now, I love the fact they have fresh fruits and vegetables and that theyre always cleaning, however I feel some type of way with this employee that has this machine that cleans the floors with this machine, he deliberately goes around with that machine witout ano considerations to shoppers and shoppers try to evade him by going to other isle and he continues to go around with the dam machine. another issue that I have with this pete is that the men that work at the meat department are cheating costomers by weighing the inappropiately I ordered 4 pounds of carne cesina and that employee literally took the weight from the meat folded up to make more wight. ( this is completely wrong, this is exploitation. I called him out on what he was doing and he acted clueless and as if he didnt understand what i was saying. the prices in this petes for some strange odd reason are way over from other petes. there so many more complaints regarding the employees and how they treat shoppers. read more

Ever since they started to package ALL the meat the quality has gone to trash. The fish is not fresh at all. I just purchased some cut up pork ribs and it had this horrible rotten blood smell. The portions are also too big, we don't all have 10 family size households. Horrible idea. read more

I always come here and never had a bad experience until today. I asked two girls for help, not exactly help but I asked who I could ask for some balloons and their response was to just wait a second. I wasn't expecting them to help I just wanted to know who I needed to ask. They continue to do what they were doing and never called anyone or told me who I could ask, like I mentioned, they just told me to wait. They were taking their sweet time all relax like come on. $2.98 for 24 ounces of fresh blueberries on the last day of January?! I sometimes get lucky and am invited to ride out here from Hyde Park with a friend who is a serious cook and hates spending money unnecessarily. As he points out, they treat their produce with respect: it's always fresh, and is displayed and handled intelligently. And man is there a lot of variety. Something else he pointed out is that they often have amazing sales on fresh fruit in the middle of winter. As in the above blueberry deal. I blocked the aisle, without being an especially broad person, as I stared incredulously at the price and quality before gathering half a dozen cartons to scarf, freeze or give to friends. Well, maybe my big cart and I didn't actually block the aisle, because the aisles are wide (and clean), and even when it's busy it's never crowded like the best places on Devon Avenue can become. I don't buy meat, but my friend says it's half the price of the stuff at Treasure Island, and just as good quality if not better. One measure of how fresh the produce is: the cilantro is still fresh five days after purchase--no need to arrange your life around making a salsa within 24 hours of getting it home. The staff are very polite and helpful. Parking was not a problem. The mall-y atmosphere of Kedzie Avenue around there is kind of depressing, but so what if it isn't a movie set. Bring a car or a pack animal, because it is impossible not to leave with about eight bags of good stuff (for under $50). Speaking of places between Pete's Market and Hyde Park that SHOULD be movie sets: does anyone know anything about the second-hand store next to the gas station on the northwest corner of Garfield and Justine that has "One Man's Treasure" and, even more intriguingly, "The Ambrosia Room" painted in old-school style in green on the side of the brick building? Near a cheerful, tropical green-painted old bay window at the second-floor level? We stopped to buy gas and I would have checked it out but it was closed. read more

I like a customer service. They all actually try you always say hello and to get you in and out as fast as possible. This particular Supermarket is very tight. Meaning they don't have a lot of space and they kind of have to cram everything in order to carry everything. They do have a splendid variety on almost everything. Most of the food they cater is Hispanic but they also carry other brands. The fruit and vegetables are very good. Their meats are okay but I would rather go to Costco for meats. They're dry cups are reasonable and the dairy is abundant. They have everything from yogurt to sour cream and all kinds of cheeses. They also bakery area and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of ice cream that they carried in their freezers. They even carry some Starbucks products and tons of candy. Bottom line I would definitely recommend Pete's market to do your groceries but you probably want to go on a day that is not too crowded. Otherwise is very uncomfortable. read more

This place is fine, live a block away so I come here often. It's fine for most things, it's a smaller store, though. I go to the other Pete's on 47th/Kedzie, which is WAY better. And I've never had a problem at that location. Really, if you have a choice, go to the other one. The only times I've had a problem at this location was for food I've gotten in the first refrigerated section by the entrance. I've gotten a pack of wonton wrappers that had a slit in the packaging so it was open and didn't notice in the store. Grabbed some firm tofu that smelled, firm tofu isn't supposed to smell like anything unless it's spoiled. And recently, just bought a pint of blueberries, that had SEVERAL moldy berries, albeit, tiny little pieces of mold but it was on the majority of them. These issues happened several months apart, and I I do big shopping trips at the other Pete's. But this is right by my house so in a pinch I'll come here. I know now to completely avoid the first refrigerated section in the store. All of their other produce is perfectly fine and never had any other issues with anything else.
