Pete's Market in Oak Park, IL, has the best hot food section in all of Oak Park, hands down. It is not even close when it comes to other stores. When I first got food from Pete's Market in Oak Park, I was quite impressed. The food was delicious. I liked the set up. I saw they had a lot of variety and appealing options for food. The grocery store is clean and well-organized. The staff have been attentive. I definitely got a family vibe from the store. They even have a dining area. When I ate the baklava there for the first time, it brought light to my eyes and joy to my mouth. I have enjoyed their fruit produce a lot as well. My favorite food from the store has been their fruit produce and their hot food section, but they have a lot of other awesome food as well. I have not been eating a lot of sweets, but their baked goods look delicious. Their veggies also look fantastic. I have gotten celery there that I liked a lot. Pete's Market in Oak Park even has foods I have had trouble finding in other stores, e.g., cans of soy milk. The lamb they have in their hot food section is out of this world. I have not even seen lamb in other grocery stores as part of hot foods/prepared foods. Overall, Pete's Market is one of my favorite grocery stores. I have found myself craving their food multiple times. When I am not there, I have thought about and looked forward to when I could go there again, like a special treat. I would definitely recommend the food here to almost anyone. read more

I love that their salad bar is always fresh and glad that I can pop in for an already prepared meal or just a bowl of soup when I'm short on time to prepare dinner. Place was very busy on a Saturday afternoon. It's difficult to get carts around due to the narrow rows. They have a large produce section. Prices are average to high for retail. The produce variety is decent but the kale was wilted. The lines were not long despite the feel of it being busy. Staff were efficient but not overly friendly. read more

This store was within walking distance to where my friend was dog-sitting and it was about 8:30pm so this option was the only grocery store open that was nearby. We came here, got exactly what we needed and overall I think the store itself is very clean and presented very nicely. They had a large selection of wine and beer which was appreciated. It kind of feels like a bougie store, but maybe it's because of the lighting, lol. The store has a very diverse make up of employees as well which was a plus. I stopped in here while visiting family in the area and picked up some items to bring home in addition to helping them find what they needed. The produce section is amazing! We bought some peppers for a dish we were making, melons and other fruit, and some avocado oil among other things. I am enjoying the Georgia peaches and Brussels sprouts that traveled back with me to Indianapolis. My parents come in here fairly regularly and have enjoyed the meat, seafood and cheese products as well. We need to come back to try the imported feta (they had several kinds including types made with sheep's milk - yay!) and lamb the next time we're cooking a Greek dinner. They even had lamb shanks and leg of lamb steaks which aren't found as often. And...back to the produce..,they had some harder to find items like lemongrass which we also need to keep in mind. The prices and the products are great! I appreciate the staff stocking they are always helpful. However, get to the front of the store and all the cashiers and cashier assistants are scowling, most the time will not acknowledge you as you put your groceries on the belt. Literally I always say hello and thank you etc.... Nothing. No eye contact even. Is the management there pissing off their employees or do they just hate everyone for no reason. I told the assistant thank you for her work and she turned her back on me and responded " MMM HMM" and walked away. I got outside to find my salad greens smashed under all my heavy items. I did nothing to deserve this treatment. Yet it's what happens 75% of the time I've been here. I have done these jobs most my life and I would have been written up and fired for the lack of customer service etiquette that I am experiencing here. read more

I cannot honestly tell you how despicable the security's actions were--but, I don't expect this institution to change (I hope it will). Consumers and Pete's employees alike, do with this information as you see fit. --- On Thursday, February 6, 2025, I followed what is certainly a dogmatic routine: I worked--laboriously, as many of us do--exercised with my personal trainer, and retreated home (a commute, for me, that's normally over an hour on Chicago's Green Line). Like hundreds of folkx in my neighborhood, I am a habitué of Pete's Fresh Market in Oak Park; it's convenient being only a block from my home. I purchased a box of sweet plantains, plant-based eggs, and "fresh" watermelon juice--all three items totaling over $25 (certainly a reflection of my indulgently health-conscious preferences and, arguably, rising grocery prices). And at nearly 8 p.m., with only two bananas having fueled me for the day, I hastily tap my phone at checkout and walk to the exit. I'm hungry. But on this night, I was stopped. The security guard asked me to open my backpack. I asked why. His answer resembled what disgruntled parents tell their children; it was unquestionable and devoid of any substantive justification. So, in the spirit of matching energy, I refused. Just as he subjected me to an inquisition, I returned the favor and questioned his authority--acknowledging that I had never seen him before. Seconds pass. We're both tired. He admits he's accusing me of theft. In quick succession, I returned to customer service and demanded that he now apply his (allegedly) indiscriminate search protocol to every customer leaving the store--or at least employ a randomized search. Several customers left the store, and he didn't. So, I asked him to identify his colleague(s) who had accused me of stealing or to produce surveillance footage of me committing the crime. He laughed and doubled down. He doubted my honesty. So, I doubted his integrity and accused him of racial profiling. His reply was inane: "I'm Black!" he said. I retorted that Black folks can be "racial" and complicit in systems that perpetuate prejudice (knowing he wouldn't recognize the nuance, as his prior comment had already made that clear). But, to be fair and to acknowledge his determination to be judicious, I suggested he call the police. A minute or so later, a store lead or manager runs to customer service, and remarks that I paid for my items. I finally leave. I'm still hungry. --- There were multiple problems with this encounter: 1. Pete's Fresh Market's website, as of 2/6/2025, does not cite any rules permitting illegal searches of patrons' bags; 2. Pete's Fresh Market in Oak Park, as of 2/6/2025, does not display a sign alerting customers to the possibility of random searches; 3. The security guard's refusal to call the police could be seen as an attempt to de-escalate--or as a subtle acknowledgment that he had no proof and was, in fact, profiling; and 4. In nearly five years of frequenting this location, I have never seen other customers subjected to this type of search (but to be fair, I'm not an employee so I wouldn't know). "Gut feelings" are not data (i.e., surveillance footage or witness testimony) nor is it probable cause; and it's certainly, as of today, not publicly-visible store policy that supported his request for a search. His refusal to call the police and apply this rule universally demonstrated that he wasn't enforcing security--he was enforcing bias. Oh yeah, it's freezing in Chicago, and I'm an immunocompromised, 6'2" Black man who was wearing black workout gear, a black Uniqlo coat, rocking short locks, and a white N95 mask--clearly, a suspect on the run. read more

I love the fresh produce selection here; however charging people per pound for a watermelon should be illegal. There is also one very rude cashier, though. She seems to be new. I was telling her that I didn't an item, and she interrupted me mid-sentence and said "yeah, yeah yeah okay whatever". As someone who has worked in the service industry and in customer service for over 12 years, that is not how you talk to a customer. She shouldn't be at the register, maybe on the sales floor. I donate blood across the road at Vitalent and figured go here for some shopping. The person stocking shelves said you need to ask"them" about prices. I asked who is "them", he looked at me and said the cashier's, like I was from a different world. I asked the cashier about emailed coupon and she said no and that coupon is for Chicago stores. Nowhere on coupon did it say Chicago stores only, as no stores listed. We were refused the coupon and now we can refuse to go here. I went to Pete's Market yesterday, I noticed when I got home I didn't have my Idaho potatoes. I went back to the store the next day today, they said the camera saw that the potatoes was in my cart. I didn't take my cart out of the store because I only had two bags to carry so I left it inside before exiting the last door, she said their cameras only go to the first door i exited, I told her I must of left it in the cart, she said she was sorry but they had no way of knowing that. I left so disappointed because they should have known if they found the basket with potatoes in it. Now days food is so high, I am a very truthful person, they should have gave me another bag of potatoes, I won't be shopping at this store anymore unless it is completely necessary. I'm responding to Kris M's less than helpful and scripted response to my original review. How dare you try to gaslight me by insinuating that I can't accept change. I have no problem with change so long as it makes sense. See a team member? What a joke. Why don't you try getting someone's attention for 15 minutes with no results. This past weekend I managed to (finally) speak to someone with a specific request (filet some fish in the self serve, formerly full service, seafood section), only to be told that I have to take what was there and that they couldn't prep my fish the way I requested. It should be noted that you have a board behind the seafood counter which specifically states that you will prep it for the customer. I finally went to Tony's and was able to get what I needed. I noticed that you and the customer relations person I previously communicated with conveniently ignores the concerns about your environmentally unfriendly packaging. If I want 3 pounds of shrimp for instance I have to purchase multiple clamshell containers. Those containers end up in the trash and our recycling service advises against putting them in the recycling bin. Previously I could request 3 pounds of shrimp (again just as an example) and it would be packaged in one container not multiple containers. Further to the issue of the environmentally unfriendly containers is that even when they are sent for recycling, only about 6% of that is actually recycled while the rest is shipped for disposal abroad, buried in landfills or in some cases dumped in the ocean. read more

Twice I was sold bad chicken with a rotten egg odor. The first time were wings bought three days before it's expiration sell-by date. Customer service ladies couldn't figure out how to give me an even exchange without charging me more. One of the managers - Keith exchanged it for me, no problem. The 2nd time were thighs bought four days before the expiration sell-by date. Either the meat is old or the cooler is not cold enough on the top layers. I didn't take it back. It was a hassle last time. I won't buy "fresh" meat from there anymore. This experience also made me question, what they're cooking in the hot bar. It's not worth worrying if it will make you sick. I'm part of the business lunch crew that crowds this place midday because the hot bar offerings are genuinely pretty good. Brisket, mac & cheese, chicken wings, orange chicken. Fresh rolled sushi. Packaged sandwiches and hot soup. Full salad bar. But the best part of this place is the Mexican--the al pastor tacos or tostadas are made to order and rival plenty of taquerias in the city. The bad news? They just significantly jacked up all the prices: most of the mexican dishes are a dollar or two more, and the hot bar jumped from $6.49 per lb to $8.99 per lb! Part of the appeal of hitting the grocery store rather than a lot of the local restaurants was the better prices. :-7 I'm less likely to go than I was, in favor of restaurants with better atmosphere. read more

I live a couple blocks from Pete's so it's very convenient. Since they opened for the most I would drive to Sugar Beet because they had a better selection of organic produce and it was an easier store to shop in. Since the pandemic, I have gradually started shopping more and more at Pete's. What I have found is the organic produce section has grown, and overall throughout the store there are more many more products that I would typically buy. The guy in the cheese kiosk is great. He takes pride in his work. I've seen complaints on the rudeness of the staff and that only happened once to me and we both had masks on so it was hard to hear what was being said. I just got back from Jewel in RF. (My husband has specific products that he buys there.) Oh my! It was a total sh*t show with regard to covid protocol. This wasn't the first time I had experienced this there. Way too crowded. No one keeping track of how many people are in the store as Pete's does. The lines were so long with no social distancing. I felt panicked to get out; it seemed incredibly unsafe. I don't feel like I'm in a dangerous situation at Pete's and I'd like to thank the staff there who limit the # of people in the store and social distancing. Also, the reminders over the intercom are a helpful reminder. read more

If you like to shop at M*riano's, you will find this Pete's location likable. Rosa J. is never a M*riano's convert, but she had a good first impression on Pete's when she occasionally shopped at the south-side location near the CTA Kedzie Orange Line station. As a matter of fact, this Pete's Fresh Market feels upscale. The presentations of fresh produce were impeccable. The prices were very reasonable as well. I was able to score select apples for $0.38/lb., six (6) pieces of grapefruit for $1.99, and Florida tomatoes for $0.58/lb. The clerk who served us at the deli section was courteous and humorous. Workers at the other departments were friendly and ready to help. Certainly that made my grocery-shopping experience at Pete's in Oak Park more pleasurable. They have a fresh juice bar, which was very tempting for me to snatch a bottle of freshly-squeezed orange juice. Well, hubby removed me from the station immediately. Temptation #2 was their hot-food department. Fortunately, the mass-gathering by the counter reminded me to avoid this area. I forgot it was 1730 hour on a weekday so majority of us would be preparing for dinner. Let us head to the check-out then. I saw the "Lotus Cafe" from afar. Rosa J. could use some coffee. Once again, hubby restrained me by dragging my petite self to the parking lot. This Pete's is truly wonderful! Every Pete's I've been through has it's own differences. Very clean and well stocked store. Didn't really have a hard time at all finding anything that I needed. As busy as the lines looked the cashiers greeted, and were very speedy with each transaction. I appreciate the service here the Hot Bar was closing as I shopped so I didn't get to check out their selection but overall this store was pretty good from cleanliness, stock, and help if needed. read more

Rare are thé business that provide free masks fro their customers. I'm not from this area just stop at firestone for making business with them and take advantage of that to shop quickly there. Nice store, but there is not always a great selection of items - especially for frozen veggies.

This is a nice regional market, with fresh baked items and prepared foods. There is a full salad bar and hot bar to also eat after grocery shopping. The fruits and vegetables are fresh and well stocked. A variety of different cuisines and styles of food spices, ingredients and seasonings can be found. The prices are good and everyone working there is nice. Weekends it might be busy and harder to find a spot to park, but one will open up. There is also a nice sized bike rack at the front of the the parking lot. read more

I love to shop at Pete's. I love the hot bar, the produce and cheese selections. I love the juice bar and the salad bar. When they have sales they are hard to beat!! BUT....A third of the staff is very rude! They don't greet you when they see you, the cashier holds a conversation in another language and laughing when they are ringing you up. Some of the cashiers will not say one word to you until it's time to let you know what you owe. One cashier did not even ask me if I needed bags, he just assumed I needed or wanted them and charged me for three. I have been shopping at this store since it opened up. Gradually the service and product selection has gone down. It has reached a point that I go 10 miles west to the Petes in Villa Park. Today I stopped to pickup a few things during the senior hours and 85% of the customers were under 60, including a young woman with a toddler. Once again, without "checking around" to see who's not wearing a mask during my visit last night, I could not help but notice that the cashier who checked me out wasn't wearing a mask. When I reported it to the manager, he just stared at me, didn't say a word. So I said, "Your response?" But I just got a stare. Passive aggression. When I asked if anything would be done about it, he said, "We talk to them, we tell them, but we can't make them." I said, "I would just like to hear you say that you will speak to him." After having to repeat that, several times, he finally mumbled that he'd speak to the guy. This is so typical of management at this store--sheer arrogance. Look, they are extremely high-priced, so they are rolling in the dough, making money hand over fist, and typically crowded with customers; so they apparently feel they don't need to act in a responsible, professional manner. It won't hurt them to lose a customer who complains about the store not following its own rules. I generally drive farther to shop at Trader Joe's but sometimes you just need to run out to someplace close. read more

Pete's reminds me of Mariano's. You can find just about anything that you may need from a deli, bakery, produce, salad bar, hot bar, and salad bar. This is my to go spot for a quick lunch pick up. At $6.49 a lb from a selection of home cooked meals in the hot bar mashed potatoes, grilled veggies, Greek style chicken breast and potatoes, wings, ribs, sausage with peppers or a Salisbury steak. Then I venture to the salad bar and pick their kale salad it's amazing, but you can build your own salad. They also have like 3 soups to pick from, I'll have to try that next. I also noticed they have chefs behind the counter serving fish, tacos, hamburgers, etc. It beats going to downtown Oak Park and picking just from one restaurant especially when you are on the run like me. So of your in the area looking to do groceries and pick up some grub, Pete's if definitely your place to go. read more

The food bar here is a bit pricer than other grocery stores that I have been to, but you have a larger selection of items here and that makes it worth it. The employees here are friendly and the store is very clean. As for the food, it was delicious. I have been dying for a catfish fillet and they had it. This with Mac and cheese (very cheesy but balanced with sauciness) was so good, as well as the bourbon chicken I tried. read more

After he put his items next to mine he went to look at gelatos then came back into line to open mouth cough all in the cashier's face (Natalie R) I was like damn. They've always had a great selection, especially with their produce, however this time around, they have truly outdone themselves. The place is awesome. The produce selection is great, as always. Tons of food selections. There are nice fresh meats available. Then there's the hot food bar and a fresh salad and fruit bar. And just as Mariano's has someone who will freshly cook your meats and veggies for you, so does this place. They also sport a fresh sushi bar. I've had food from here about twice and while it is good, it's still not Mariano's level just yet. Keep working on it. *gentle pat on the shoulder* Pete's is spacious, clean, and very easy to shop. While my husband is obsessed with Roger Park's Cermak Produce, Pete's is my newest grocery obsession. Unfortunately, I live in Rogers Park, so I try to fit Pete's in on a weekend when I'm at work (Cicero, IL) or any time I'm out and about in Oak Park. This store is a "regular" grocery store...but ...I don't know. There is something about it. I really like the produce section and they have some great meats, like the in-house prepared chimichurri. A friend had asked me to driver her here and ever since I bought some groceries here, I'm obsessed. A really nice addition to the local grocery options here. -Maybe someday they will open one up by me! read more
