Just came here last night. Tuesday it's half-off sitting fee. We were greeted by Nia and she was very helpful with what we wanted to accomplish. Seriously, my cousin and I were asking her a question every 10 min. This place is well stocked and has lots of examples to try out. Everything is very neat and organized so you should be able to find your tools and colors. btw, tuesday night 7p, it was only 4 other customers there and it was so quiet. You don't have to worry about sharing the space with birthday party kids. My first time, i didn't attempt any technique, but this second time, i tried the lace technique for my pumpkin, and used multicolor ombre. I'm not sure how it will turn out, but I'm happy with the lace they provided and the experience of painting a plate I will definitely use. read more

Went in yesterday for the very first time with my son and husband :) It was such a great experience and I have to give a huge shout out to IAN! Okay I got my piece back today after 2 days. Super quick! Its ugly. lol. haha. I should have used a bigger brush because you could see the brush stroke lines all over it. Studio fees are $12 for kids, $14 for adults - plus the price of the piece ($16-30+). The bristles on the brushes are trash/falling apart and the handles are falling apart. Employees aren't much help, they mostly just hang behind the counter and wrap orders. This has become one of my favorite places to spend time with friends/family or even solo. You truly get to release that creative side and watch you figurine come to life. You will enjoy your time here whether you are alone, small group or large group. (Tip: make a reservation for larger group). You will find times when there are birthday parties, which I find exciting. I love to see how kids to adults masterpieces come out. They also allow you to bring in food and drinks which was nice because you can be there for a long period of time (depending on your project). If you run out of time or energy you can come back to complete your masterpiece on a later date. The staff are great and extremely friendly. They offer a bunch of very helpful tips on your first visit. Parking is easier in the garage or behind nearby buildings. read more

Went to petroglyph this past weekend with my son To paint some spooky things and was thrilled by the wide variety Of Pumpkins, Skulls and the cutest little gravestones. My son ended up picking out the cutest jack-o'-lantern with witch hat. Ian was so helpful with picking out the perfect colors and showing him the bubble Technique that came out amazing! I'm so happy to see this small business survive covid since it is such a staple for families in willow glen! Leon was wonderful with answering the endless questions my son had about the kiln and glazing and during the end at check out. What better way to spend time with your lover than to go on a painting date?! My girlfriend had told me about this place before and I have always wanted to go and try it. We came in on a rainy day so there weren't many people inside which was good. The staff were super friendly and helpful in telling us how the process works and different painting techniques we can use on our ceramic piece. Basically you pay a flat rate for the actual painting and processing fee. Then you pay the price for the ceramic piece you choice, which vary based on the piece you chose. On this day my girlfriend chose a shark ( because she's scary) and I chose a whale (because I whaley like her LOL). We took about 2 hours to paint our pieces and it was a lot of fun! There was a huge variety of plates, cups, figurines and other ceramic pieces to chose from and a lot of different paint colors and brushes to use. I strongly recommend this place for date nights, parties, and just for the sake of painting ^_^ read more

I would just like to say that I've been coming here for years and thought the customer service was amazing here. I felt comfortable in the studio and confident that my pieces would come back to me the way I left them. I came here a few weeks ago and did a couple of pieces. I came in with family the following week to pick up and to also do a few more pieces. I had to explain this to 3 different people all who didn't want to take the responsibility of helping me. It was a very strange interaction. We finally got seated and got to work. After, we went up to the counter to pay and were met with rudeness and a scolding. An older lady saying we have to put the pieces on the counter. I explained to the worker that the pieces were too big to fit on the counter so I used the side table next to it where it shows you to put your pieces if you are handicapped. She kept insisting that I put them on the on the main counter so finally she moved everything they had strewn on it and said, "See! There's room!" I finally was able to pick up my newest pieces and I just got home and they are all chipped. Almost $200 worth of ceramics. I've never had this happen before. And it looks like someone was just careless with them and knocked them around. I'm very disappointed. I also wanted to add that the pieces that are being sold look cheap and lack the detail from the pieces I did years ago. It looks more like what is being offered at other chain ceramic places. read more

OH MY GOD! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! My man friend and I went here on a Sunday morning after having some delicious breakfast from Bill's Cafe. I called 2 days in advance to make reservations for 10:15 am (in case Bill's Cafe took long) since it could get busy especially during the weekends. We walked in and was greeted by Lisa (I believe that was her name.. sorry if it wasn't!!!!) and told her that we have a 10:15 reservations and she took us to our spot. After getting settled with our table, we browsed around to see what we could paint and there were a lot of choices - dragons, cats, dogs, big dishes, mugs, small dishes, vases, ring holders, small treasure chests, etc. I felt like a total kid with such excitement wanting to grab all of them to paint. I ended up grabbing the dragon and my date grabbed 2 mugs. Jerica explained to us all kinds of style that we can add to our pieces - etching(if you're doing a two colors on top of each other.. it's like scrapping) and lace to name a few since I forgot the rest of them, lol. She was very kind, helpful with our questions and even offer suggestions on how we could do the stuff we want to do to our ceramics. There were lots of colors to choose from, different brushes, pencils, sponges, stamps and even a gel-like paint that's in a tube! My dragon turned out pretty badass after all the painting and etching. The kids stopped by our table and were amused how awesome my dragon was! Overall, this is a good place to get to know your date, take your kids and do a date night with your significant other. I believe you can bring food and even wine as you unwind the day and be in your artsy world. One thing I really like was the big space they have for people to move around because it does get really busy. Oh, the turn around time to pick up your pieces is faster than Color Me Mine... ours will only take 3 days - painted them Sunday, picking them up Wednesday. Been here several times since I have little ones that I'd like to expose and partake in the arts and crafts part of life, and every time we have gone in, it has always been a pleasant experience for all. The store is always organized and staff is always appropriate and understanding when asked to explain the process for creating and painting your own masterpiece. It's such a relief to be able to feel comfortable and not frowned upon when you don't know where stuff is or what the heck you're doing. Totally not the case here. There are tons of pieces to choose from which are all pretty easy to find. Making a decision on what to paint is probably the hardest part! Like do I want a unicorn or seahorse, ice cream bowl or pen holder, candy dish or coffee mug? You could potentially go nuts in here or just take a REALLY long time trying to decide. The paint, paint brushes, stencils, sink area is all really clean and well kept too. I notice a lot of things and am an undercover germaphobe, but I didn't see any gunk, mildew or build-up anywhere. Thank goodness! Definitely great for birthday parties, small or large parties, date night - especially when you can bring your own food and wine while you paint. How awesome is that?! Very. Great for date night, family time with kids, or big groups with friends (I'll break down why for each one). Date Night: Fun, creative, and unique way to get to know your date. Any awkward silences can be excused by working on your art, but plenty of opportunity to chat about your date's awesome art skills. More expensive than a movie, but way more memorable. Plus, you have to come back for your finished piece, so it is a wonderful way to have a follow up date several days later. LOTS of restaurants and coffee shops around for before or after. You can even bring a bottle of wine in as a guaranteed way to impress your date. Family time: 1st -There are a variety of tables and chairs depending on the age of your kids so everyone is comfortable. 2nd - Wide variety of both kid-worthy ceramics (Hello Kitty, dragons, piggy banks, etc) for kids and also for adults (travel mugs, bowls, vases). 3rd - Kid cave near the back allows kids to crawl into a clean and carpeted area with a TV playing kid movies. *Can be pricey (I paid around $14 for a penguin cup for my 7-yr old to paint), but despite it looking like it was going to turn out to be one of those kid art projects you throw out with guilt and in secrecy, when I picked it up it was freaking adorable. So even non-artists will be pleased. Large Groups: I had 13 of us in there recently and we were able to sit comfortably together and have fun visiting. Champagne and brownies were passed along (they allow alcohol and outside food & drinks) while we painted all sorts of things (from gnomes and vases to cups and geckos). Very accommodating (space, supplies, and time wise). No rushing or feeling crowded. TIPS: There is plenty of free parking 1 minute away (turn into the driveway next to Jamba Juice). There are aprons in the back to protect your clothes. It is cheaper to do this with a group of 7 or more people (I paid studio fees of $5 instead of $9.50). You can bring outside food and drink in. You have to come back in a few days to pick up your finished piece. You CAN finish up your piece later if you run out of time and do NOT have to pay another studio fee. Overall impression: VERY nice people who work there. Extremely helpful and polite. Pricey, but worth it for what you get. Great for parties, date night, large groups, friends, and kids. AWESOME STAFF! I made the "mistake" of selecting a complicated piece, and being a detail-oriented perfectionist required me to visit several times to complete the paint job. Sooo... I had the pleasure of visiting about 8 times for at least 3 hours each (usually more than 5) in November through December 2018, and at each visit, was treated FABULOUSLY by many different friendly, helpful staff members. The most helpful of all was Nia, who had a great instinct for knowing "just how often" to drop by and offer tips, suggestions, insights, or just chat without being intrusive. I watched her help others, and always find something to clean or organize in between helping customers. If I owned this place, I would want to hire ten more just like her. They are lucky to have her. Because Nia and ALL of the other workers made me feel so welcome, and because the place is clean, well-organized, and amply supplied, I am planning to bring a group of friends there for a get-together in January. The only suggestions I have are: 1. Offer a special "Petro Parking Placard" for painters of the large, detailed objects (like a two-piece gingerbread house) to put on their cars, so that we can stay in the lot right behind the store for more than the allotted three hours. I didn't like either worrying that I would be towed, or getting up to move my car. 2. Have a few "adults only" or "big-kids only" days and/or time slots per week so that one can paint without listening to crying babies, or worry that clumsy little cuties might bump them as they express their adorable exuberance. I love children, but once in a while, one wants to be able to concentrate. 3. Offer competitions, and somehow tie that it with an auction of the "winners" with the proceeds going to a charity. I couldn't believe how inexpensive this place was. They charge a $10 sitting fee and then you basically pay for the item you purchase (avg price $10-$15). So for around 20 bucks, you get a custom painted dish/cup/bowl etc.. It's a pretty good deal. And, you can bring your own food/drinks. They're even cool with alcohol! Added bonus: if you don't finish your painting you can always come back and touch it up next time.. for free :) The staff is really helpful too and they offered a couple of excellent techniques for what I was doing. Also, you have to leave your masterpiece there for a few days so they can heat it and add a clear layer of paint to laminate it so be prepared to come back a few days later to pick up your stuff. read more

When my sister first introduced me to Petroglyphs I was pretty surprised. I had no idea that there was even a ceramic lounge in San Jose. I told a few friends about it and decided to check it out for ourselves. It's on the beautiful strip of Willow Glen with a really lively atmosphere. Inside was pretty neat, there were shelves and shelves full of unglazed ceramic pieces you can choose from, from bowls to plates to tea cups to piggy banks to dragon models and cars, you name it. They also had a wide variety of different color paints along with different kinds of paints. They have everything you would need to be creative. My friends and I killed a good four hours painting and in the end, our pieces averaged to about 20-30 dollars a piece, depending on what kinda of ceramic piece we chose. Not bad for socializing and being able to catch up with some friends for four hours. They glaze twice a week so within a few days, I received a phone call letting us know that our pieces were finished and ready for pick up. The pieces came out amazing. Prices for the pieces are a little higher than CMM because you're in the Willow Glen area (more upscale=they can charge more) & the pieces are more intricate/cute as well. Love the vibe here, very chill and I don't feel rushed in any way. Service is awesome. The ladies come by pretty frequently to change out your water bowl and ask if you're doing ok. The painting experience is also easier because they have enough acrylic bottles so you can actually take the bottles to your table. They also have a ton of paint brushes in all shapes and sizes. This would have been five stars, if the staff were all properly trained. I was told by two different employees that we have to pay only one sitting price if we only paint one piece, and that made sense to me. However, that was incorrect. You aren't charged multiple sitting prices for one person painting multiple pieces, so the sitting price is not about the amount of paint/brushes you use. The sitting fee also isn't about the space you're using, because as long as you don't touch paint to a piece of pottery, you don't have to pay. It is honestly just a way for them to get money out of you, and it's really unfair. Other than that, I love these types of pottery places. I love that they have basically everything you need, and most basic pieces of pottery you would want to paint. All brush sizes, many different paints, stencils, and patterns. I really wish there was another place like this that didn't charge as much, or that they would at least take away the stupid extra charge. It really left a bad taste in my mouth and instead of coming often like I expected, I will only be returning if I really need to paint something, or if I get a gift card. However, our mug came out really nicely, so I can't be totally upset. read more

One was a Cupcake (girly right) and the other was a holder or coaster thingy. I love how the employees do not rush you or encourage you to do a certain one. Love this place. One of my favorite ways to spend a relaxing afternoon doing something creative :) I chose this over going to the beach last weekend because I can truly relax here (especially on a hot day)- buy a Jamba juice right next door, come and paint pottery while enjoying my jamba while being cooled by their air conditioning... ah. Yeah, I don't need yet another plate at home but one that's personalized with my artwork? So worth it. Not the cheapest since you have to pay for the piece you work on on top of the studio fee (9 something, but for as long as you need!). I got my sushi plate for 18 dollars I believe... but considering that you take an average of 3-4 hours at a place like this, it's not so bad. Good bang-for-your-buck-for-the-hour deal. Anyways, coming with buddies is always fun since you can just relax and make fun of each other's artwork. And I love food is allowed so I can snack on stuff as I paint. I love snacking on stuff... Went on a Saturday afternoon, which is a busy time for them, but they went over the procedures and techniques for us - in enough detail for me, with some prior experience, and not quite enough detail for him as a first timer. Enjoyed the flat rate sitting fee of $10, as some places encourage you to rush by charging hourly painting fee. We liked that we could have taken drinks & snacks, but honestly, I don't know where we would have put the. At pickup time, the knowledgeable staff explained to my date what he might try differently next time & apologized for not being more thorough in their instruction. My party of 10 and I made a reservation here on Labor for some family bonding time. Most of us were new to the place and the employee was nice enough to thoroughly explain the entire process before we went to pick our items. There was a huge variety to choose from and I had a hard time making a choice!! Most items were priced just under $20 and others were more depending on what you want. There was a good supply of many paint colors, paint brushes, and stencils. However, a lot of the small squeeze tubes from the jars (sorry, bad description) were out of paint. We painted for almost 3 hours and it was a great experience. Another employee was nice enough to empty and refill our water bowls so that we could rinse our brushes in clean water. Also, I went to pick up my mini round container today and it turned out great! The paint is smooth, there's no bumps or unevenness, as if I bought it from an actual store. The fun part is that you get to personalize your piece which makes it much more meaningful and personal. This place may be priced on the high side, but you get what you pay for! read more
