I enjoyed their selection of products and variety. They offer Russian and European goods. I liked the place and the pricing was comfortable.

Veal Pelmeni by the pound - such variety!

First, I think it's fair to warn you that I drove over an hour to go here: so much do I value what a good Russian Grocery Store has to offer, and a good Russian Grocer this certainly is! They have the largest selection of frozen Pelmeni I have ever seen and they even serve fresh Pelmeni in the back at their extensive food counter. They offer a large variety of Eastern European (mostly Russian) foods; hot, cold, baked, fried, you name it! The ambience a little cramped among the packed shelves and the bustling customers, but that's part of the experience just like not hearing a syllable of English inside the store save what you speak yourself. Come along and get some Blini & Kvas, practice your Russian. This Russian Grocery store is a standout place to do it.

I was out getting a ultrasound at Einstein Center One and decided to stop at Petrovsky Market which is in the next block. It was funny how I never noticed that most things are written in English and another language. I do believe that language is Russian. Forgive me, but I was born and raised in the United States and not familiar with the language or the culture. This didn't deter me at all, plus the employees were very helpful. Petrovsky isn't as big as a full size market, but still a nice size. they are very well stocked and you can find most things that you are looking for. I was most impressed with their meats (good prices) and their bakery. I don't know the pronunciation of most things but they looked delicious. I just pointed at what I wanted and they were more than happy to help me. They also have a nice deli counter, Produce dept. and frozen foods. I would definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood. P.S. If you decide to go take your own bags.

My friend went to Russia this summer and just had to show me all the cuisine he tried, so we came here by car on a sunday to grab as much as we could find! Russian food has never been on my radar, until I made my way over here. There are 3 or 4 markets like this in the area, but this one had a lot of recommendations. First, the cheese and deli selection is phenomenal. Awesome prices compared to the city, with fully Russian speaking workers and customers. The aisles were full of authentically branded cans, candies, cookies, rice and pastas, with ask good prices on fresh veg. I came for the pilmenys (like an eastern ravioli filled with veal, another with chicken, etc) and the Georgian dumplings. For 2.99 a pound, awesome find. There's also a hot food bar and a dessert area, which led me to trying a few things I would've never been able to. To be straight, the food features a lot of fish, beets, mayonnaise, and puff pastry-- all of which are awesome together! Will be coming back as soon as my pilmenys are gone-- which is likely very soon.

The prepared food is good, although they don't have possibly my favorite Russian food, the crepes with mushroom, chicken and dill.

My dining companion argued strenuously that pickles have no place on a hoagie but I ignored him lol. I skipped the mayo tho. Surprisingly Dan takes credit cards and Apple Pay, $5 min. He keeps long hours for such a simple sandwich shop. Dan's used to be a butcher & convenience store, maybe back in 1947. Now the shelves are mostly empty except for chips soda and milk, and the butcher case mostly has coleslaw and deli meats. It's actually kind of depressing if you walk to the back. Its a small old school deli that slices the meat to order and provides service with a smile. I was working in Fishtown and checked yelp real quick to see if there was a new spot nearby that I could try for lunch. Dan's had very good reviews and it was less than 5 minutes away. I think its a husband and wife that run this place but I wasn't 100% sure. I ordered a large Italian hoagie and woman behind the counter grabbed the roll from the clear bin in front of the counter and the gentlemen sliced the meat fresh for my Italian and added peppers, oil & vinegar and SPO. There are not many places that still operate like a true old school deli and I really enjoyed it. As she handed me the hoagie she asked if I had ever been there before to which I answered "no." She said well you'll be back. I loved the confidence and she was 100% right! If you are in the area and love a good Italian hoagie Dan's is a must try.

No disrespect at all to Heather Thomason, because this really is her brain child. I've loved following her for a few years now and was happy her kickstarter was backed. I really wanted to contribute and fought for it a bit, but it was backed before I made up my mind. I did wrestle with it for a bit, about what package I would get, but I knew it would be logistically hard to support. We walked in and saw a lot of interesting items. Duck Eggs really caught our eye, but we didn't want to carry them around with us. Decided to leave the store, go to ITV for a drink, and come back before they closed at 6:00 PM. Ordered a nice cut of flank steak and the duck eggs. Maybe for a Kangaroo burger later this week? I just love the idea here, where Primal wants to be more interconnected with farms. I'm really into better quality eggs now, for when we make pasta or things like that. Knowing what the animal ate, really helps make a better product when egg is the star.

I loved the stories and reputation that Heather Thomason set during her time at Kensington…read moreQuarters. And although I still haven't gotten around to trying it during that time, I was looking forward to her and Cecille May's commitment to make sustainable, pasture-raised meat more readily available to Philadelphia when they branched out on their own for Primal Supply Meats (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2016/05/31/kensington-quarters-butcher-heads-out-on-her-own/). And when I sampled their offerings at spots like Stargazy, Garage, and Tired Hands Fermenteria it added up to some of the best meat dishes I've had. While they did an amicable job of providing their meats to restaurants and farmers markets, Primal Supply really needed a butcher shop of their own to better prepare Philly for the carnivore cravings that their meats illicit. And when I heard that they were set to open a few blocks away from me in the spot that used to house the old East Passyunk hardware store (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2017/12/15/primal-supply-butcher-shop-east-passyunk/), it lead to some of the best sausages that I've had (and I say this as a Cappuccio's die hard! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cappuccios-meats-philadelphia). the bacon & thyme pork sausage was sweet yet smoky and savory at the same time. And the pork Vindaloo yielded an ample amount of Indian spices and heat. Add in the ability to get beef, pork, chicken, liver, lamb, goat stew, and even pet food, and you'll find a huge variety of options. They also carry local cheeses from the likes of Birch Run Farms, pasta from Severino, and the oppotunity to join their pay as you go Butcher's Club meat program, making it another solid addition to East Passyunk!
