Over time it lost its warm, personal feeling due to corporate changes, but we stayed because our dogs' records were there. This review is about the experience we had on the day we brought our dog Bella to be put down and we can never walk into that place again. We rescued her from Texas, and after 11 years she became very sick quickly. After many tests, we learned she had extremely high blood pressure and neurological issues. She lost her vision, did not recognize us, , and could barely walk. We knew it was time. In the past, euthanasia there was peaceful. I would go in the room say my emotional goodbyes due to the fact I am not able to watch anyone I love die . My husband stayed with our dogs and it was quick and calm. This time Bella was taken out of the room, and my husband was not allowed to go with her. He asked twice and was told no, without explanation. While I waited, I heard Bella start screaming, yelping, and crying in pain. I became hysterical. Bella had always had a severe issue with her paws being touched, something that should have been known. My husband always held her during procedures. We were never told they would try to place an IV, and Dr. Chin later said he attempted it six times. He described her as fighting due to neurological issues, but that was simply how Bella always reacted. If my husband had been there, this could have been avoided. No dog should be separated from their owners in their final moments, and no owner should have to sit and listen to their pet in distress. Putting a dog down is hard enough but always was a peaceful, calm process, and this was a nightmare . A week later I met with Dr. Chin, hoping for compassion and answers, especially why Tom was not allowed to be with her and why he was not told where they were going and what they were doing. Instead, after pouring my heart out he was very defensive, denied Tom asked to go with her, and told me to see a grief counselor. I already have, but they cannot help me process what I heard. While I was listening to Bella screaming I was hysterical and not one person in that office comforted me or said a word to me. I am writing this to warn other pet owners at that final moment to know exactly what will happen and never leave your pet alone at the end. We thought we understood the simple process based on past peaceful experiences, but this was very different. I am still dealing with this every day and cannot talk about Bella without crying about the way she died and how I listened to her screaming and wasn't able to do anything for her . When I returned for Bella's ashes, a staff member named Jenn showed genuine compassion. She hugged me, cried with me, and walked me to my car. The world needs more people like her. I would really prefer not reading what the owner has to say. I certainly feel that a phone call from him would show some real feelings .

What I found disturbing was that when asked what I planned to do for flea and tick prevention I Tom's them that I used seresto collars. Obviously I knew about the collars and had bought them in the past. They applied a collar and when I looked at my receipt noticed I was charged almost double for what I can purchase anywhere. I came home and ordered a collar for my second dog from petco, delivered the same day. When I inquired I was tons these products are counterfeited on retail. Puppy needs to be spayed and when I inquired about fee I was told they'd prepare an estimate, I had to call to get it, I thought really high and who ever gave me the estimate, listed items like presentation, hydration and monitoring as if they were separate items. They are actually part of every surgery either for a pet or myself. It does seem that the envelop is being pushed in financial terms here. I sought other recommendations and was quoted almost half the fee for spaying. As a senior in this economy I have to be careful about how I spend my money, I have never denied my pets any care they. Needed including cancer and diabetes care. Expensive but I'd never deny any if my pets life saving care, As conveniently located I can not continue to deal with this facility.

His vital signs had slowed dangerously necessitating the cessation of his routine teeth cleaning. From that point onward every one of my dogs has gotten a cardiac workup prior to the scheduling of surgery with anesthesia to rule out any hidden cardiac issues which might endanger my dog's life during the use of anesthetic agents. On Dr. Blass' recommendations based on his exams, slight changes in pre-op meds and/or IV flow rates have been noted in his exam notes and forwarded to my regular veterinarian along with the routine findings on each dog's cardiac health, with recommendations for followup exams as needed. I moved from Hoboken to my parents house in Dix Hills temporarily until my move and so I had to get information from my old vet for DHAH to do the paperwork. June was a delight to work with. She knows what she's doing for international travel. She even made calls directly to my old vet to save time instead of using me as a middleman. Not only did she work with me closely for the couple days leading up to my appointment to ensure I collected the correct information for my pet, but she handled all the paperwork beforehand so my vet visit was 20 minutes max in and out. I highly recommend this place to anyone that needs to travel with their pet internationally. June should be working for the USDA, she's that good.

My veterinarian advised that spaying her this young was not safe and strongly recommended waiting until she was older. When I brought these concerns to the rescue, I was met with rude, dismissive, and intimidating responses. Rather than having a respectful discussion about my veterinarian's recommendations, I was repeatedly told I would be in breach of contract and would never have licensure of my puppy if I did not follow their timeline. The emails I received were hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I was simply trying to advocate for my puppy's health. I understand rescues have policies, but there should be room for reasonable consideration when a licensed veterinarian raises concerns. The way I was treated left me feeling disrespected and unsupported. I have adopted many puppies and animals from other rescues in the past and have never had an experience remotely close to this. I would encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to carefully review their requirements and be aware of how medical concerns and adoption procedures may be handled.

Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home. Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes. Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us. From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang. So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. I've brought my dogs here since I was a child, but over the last year I've had several negative experiences. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 only because Dr. Terrell usually provides excellent, realistic advice. They also have a kind and professional attitude. My concerns are with the overall care and office staff. 1. On three separate occasions, they returned my dogs to me from the back covered in feces. Each time, I had to ask to clean them up. 2. They no longer show itemized bills before charging, which leads to errors. The first time this happened, I was charged for for medicine I didn't receive. When I pointed it out, I got a credit on my account. At my next visit, rather than using the credit to pay for the bill, they charged me FOR the credit, so I ended up paying them the $50 they owed me. When I explained that it was a credit, she didn't understand. Mistakes happen, but it is basic math. Please go back to showing the itemized bill before patients pay. 3. My senior dog stayed there overnight with an infection on an IV drip. They said they'd give him antibiotics. When I called the next morning and asked about it, Dr Dratch said, "what antibiotics?" Our treatment plan wasn't followed. I started to cry, and he said "no wait we did, we just forgot to write it down." I am not sure what to believe with him backtracking and I fear that they didn't give him a shot at recovering with the medicine. 4. My young dachshund showed signs of back pain, so I called for an appointment ASAP. I was told the next available slot was two days later. When I called back begging for something sooner, they moved it up by one day. That night, he became paralyzed. I rushed him to an emergency vet, who sent us to the city for immediate spinal surgery. The next day, Dr. Dratch called to check in, which was kind of him - I really appreciated it, but by then it was too late. I now know that if my dachshund had received surgery before paralysis, his chances of recovery would have been much higher (80-90% versus 50%). He might never walk or pee on his own again. I'm devastated and wish the office had conveyed how urgent this condition can be, or at least referred us to an emergency vet or neurologist. Their lack of urgency made me feel like it wasn't an emergency situation. Now, I am so heart broken. I used to travel 20-30 minutes to come here, but it's no longer worth the inconvenient travel time. I appreciate the help I used to get from the vets and office staff, but there might be some mismanagement happening. I would really look into better training for some of the newer staff.
