Update: We ended up having to put down Fitzwilliam as his cancer was too far gone. Dr Hyde and his staff did everything in their power to make it as gentle as possible on us and made sure we were comfortable with our decision. Dr. Heyde and his team are the best. They have been our vet for 5 years now and have been very supportive and sweet to all 3 of our pets. Unfortunately we lost our shepherd (15 yo) in December, but before that Dr. Heyde took such wonderful care of him every time I brought him in the office even in his less mobile days when walking on tile or staying upright was a challenge. Now we just have our 2 kitties who typically come in as a duo and Dr. Heyde and his team always show them so much care and compassion. I also appreciate the holistic approach Dr. Heyde takes with my guys; he isn't a doctor that is going to try to upsell you or make you spend extra money. He never rushes out of the room, spends adequate time with each patient and has also always been available to answer questions and give advice via phone or email when something comes up outside of an appointment. Really sweet and knowledgable group of people, brand new state-of-the-art building and fast, reliable care! Everyone is always very nice here, and I love the vet techs, but I recently had a very concerning issue and will no longer bring pets here. I have an old cat who stopped eating and was sleeping more. On Wednesday I brought her into the vet because I figured these are signs that she's at the end of her life and I needed to know what to do next; what were signs of old age versus needing to be put down, etc. basically just preparing for the future. The vet told me my cat needed to be put down asap and wanted me to do it then and there. I said well she's happy - she's wagging her tail and purring, yes she's sleeping more but seems content. The vet told me that our cat was in distress even if I couldn't tell. I told her I was not putting her down now and would bring her back Saturday. So on Saturday we brought her to be euthanized. We told this vet, a different vet than the last one, about our reservations. He more or less said that she seemed fine to him and that unless she had difficulty breathing, seizure activity, or seemed unhappy, we could let her just be old and happy at home. He said if it were his cat he would not put her down. So I had one vet tell me to euthanize my cat immediately and not wait a day more, and another tell me my cat was fine, just old. Not taking any more pets there again. read more

When I moved from the city, I did some vet-shopping,. I chose Pets First (third place I visited) because (a) they were very willing to show me around, and (b) the premises smelled as good a my living room (fresh, not artificially scented) I keep coming back because of the great care Dr Giuliani has given my cats in the 11 years I've been taking them to her. She even "took care" of me when I freaked out over 1 cat's FIV+ status ( these are my 1st pets). Her sensitivity was displayed when she recommended a later visit for my schizo-cat, advising a kitty-calmant: "Her heart is racing too fast; she's terrified". The staff are appropriately friendly, always polite and willing to explain things. I have never had a problem getting an appointment, nor have I minded paying for the services given my pets. You don;t go cheap when you're dealing with your children or your pets. read more

since they deleted my review on google reviews i'll leave it here - if i could give a zero i would. i was just informed that i am not a loud to return to this establishment. i put my cat down in may. there was some issue at the time and they can't fully tell me what that issue was. the first lady i spoke to on the phone was extremely rude and wouldn't give an explanation. i called back and someone with a brain broke it down for me. in may the vet offered on her own to pay for part of the bill as i thought it was complete bullshit how much they were charging to put the animal down. as my cat was a smaller cat. putting a pet down is a very sensitive matter. they are saying my reaction to her offering to pay is why i am not aloud back.i thought she was offering to 'be kind'. i didn't know accepting this would in return would have me booted. at the time there was something very weird about her offering to pay for part of the bill. she made sure to let me know if was coming out of her pocket. because i said please thank pets first for me and she said oh no it's coming out of my pocket. she really rubbed me the wrong way like she wanted some sort of award. i'm not sure maybe it's her southern twang that led to the miss communication. but what i'm realizing now is she obviously regretted her act of kindness. she was on her high horse for sure showing off to the tech. i have a relative who also can't stand this particular vet. and has also been thinking to switching to havertown vet and this gave us the push to leave. i wouldn't return if they changed their mind and said i could come back. next time let a client know the repercussions of taking an offer that some vet offered to make herself feel good about herself for doing an act of kindness. she really is a saint ! i never had any idea this would affect me later. so unprofessional and stupid. made way more problems later. thanks again! this situation involved doctor white. if you notice on google reviews she has all the one star reviews. maybe she is the problem !!! thanks again !! read more

If you're looking for a vet that truly goes above and beyond, this is the place for you. Around 5:30 PM, I started calling all of the vets in my area to see if anyone would see my sick kitten. Even the places that closed at 8 were unwilling to see me. I spoke with John at Pets first at 5:45. He got Dr. Heyde on the phone, I explained the situation, and he agreed to see me. Please note that they close at 6. My kitten was seen by a tech and Dr. Heyde. They gave him fluids, prescribed a new antibiotic, and the whole staff pitched in to teach my husband and I how to tube feed him. They spent an hour and a half with us, when they were supposed to be closed, to make sure that the kitten received the best possible care. I have never seen this level of love for a patient, not even a human patient. Thank you to everyone at Pets First. As long as I live in this area, I will never take my pets anywhere else! read more

If you are looking for a compassionate vet, DO NOT go here. The tipping point for me was when they sent me blood results for my dog, a long time client. The blood work which had out of range results were sent to me in an email with no explaination. Since they never called and I could not reach the vet for 12 hours since they were closed, I was convinced my dog had cancer. When I raised this experience with the owner, they offered no apology or explaination. In addition, this vet is much more expensive than other vets in the area. They also always try to upsell you on products that are unnecessary. read more

Dr Harris is a really great Vet. I like how she handles my dog who can be frightened at times. She has a great personality and I can see she loves animals. I have been going to this practice since about 2009. Then I left the area and I was away for a few years. Now I am back locally and I see there is a bit of turn-over since I was there last. I have seen Dr Harris a few times since my return and every time I have to deal with the young, blond, receptionist (which is pretty much every single time) I get nothing but condescending remarks, and short, abrupt responses. She is really disrespectful to this clinic's clients. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who is getting treated this way and I have been nothing short of nice, polite, respectful and patient client. I am now reconsidering whether I want my pets to go there. It is a shame that your client-facing employee doesn't understand what good client service means to a small practice. After spending several hundred dollars for jacked up $$$ on services over 1 year, I was treated horribly after bringing in a dog who I re-homing for my Mom who recently had a stroke. I feel bad for the original owner of Pets First 'Dr Lilian Giuliani' having her name attached to a Vet that is nothing but a cash cow heartless venue. Dr. West and Dr. Giuliani truly love animals. I prefer Dr. West because he's slightly more friendly, though I've never been dissatisfied with Dr G either. He's very professional, but doesn't come across as all business. It's a small operation, with just two exam rooms, but you get personal attention; with sometimes fairly long visits, so you may have to wait while another pet gets the attention yours will as well. Very clean office, great staff and techs who are welcoming and helpful. Dr. West has always been honest with me in diagnosing problems, and in saying when it's not a job he can handle (like a complicated surgery, or a sonogram that they don't have the big equipment for). He sometimes comps certain things during a visit, like nail clipping, or tries to reduce your bill for you a bit. It's not cheap, but petcare never is--and this is *not* a country vet, so it's worth the cash--though still nowhere NEAR as expensive as going to Penn. One time, he diagnosed her cancer, and had a rotating surgeon come through one day and remove the tumor from her face--cancer free for 2.5 years! He helped us thru a gallbladder surgery performed at Metropolitan in Trouper back in July. Pets First keeps my old girl tickin; they have literally saved her life & I would recommend them to anyone. read more

I took my 2 year old Pit Bull to the location in Chandler Friday night...**I called first to get some information, they told me it would be a 2-3 hour wait and that no appointment could be made, I did let them know he was showing signs of parvo and they let me know some prices and so forth. I called a couple other places and it was the same story... so I headed down to wait.** Once I got there they turned me away stating that I could not wait because my dog had parvo. No one told me that was the case when I had called in, and so I loaded my 60 lb dog, that can not walk at this point, into the truck just so they could send me to the Mesa location** Now we get to the Mesa location. They do have a room for me and I wait 2 hours to see the doctor. I inform her that I believe me dog has parvo. She tells me that because of his age- there is a very small chance he has parvo and recommends a batch of testing that totals almost $600. After running those tests and finding no answer, she decides to check him for Parvo... Turns out that's exactly what it is. I decided to treat him at home and the doctor provides me with medication to treat him at home (several hundred dollars). I am given two bags of fluid that will last me 3.5 - 4 days, a 7 day supply of antibiotics and a 4 days supply of anti nausea medication. **All of witch are in pill form** While administering these medications at home... Some/ most of the pills are lost/ destroyed while I am trying to shove them down his throat... Day 4 at home my dog is showing sings of recovery and I am out of fluid and anti nausea medication. I send my husband to the clinic to get more. They charge him $80 for what can be purchased for $20 everywhere else. I feel as so though I am being extorted for money to try and save my dogs life... I have paid this clinic over $1000, and to continue treatment we are looking at so much more.... All because they refuse to write me prescriptions so that I can purchase what my dog needs at a more cost effective venue.... I am very disappointed and heart broken that these people care more about money then they do the well being of an animal. I realize that these things cost money but when you think its okay to charge someone in need $30 for a bag of water... that can be purchased at your local Petco for $10.... you start to question the motives behind the business..... I will not use this business nor recommend them to any one, ever. On top of it all... the staff was extremely unfriendly. I felt extremely judged and demeaned that I was choosing to care for my dog at home and not hospitalize him. After making my choice, the staff acted like my dog was already dead... and gave me absolutely no advice or help. read more

I was a customer for many years with our previous dogs and when our last dog was sick and passed Dr. Hyde had so much compassion that I knew with our new Sheltie puppy we had to come back. They are always so thorough and compassionate. Every time there has ever been an issue with any of our dogs, their patience, kindness and expertise has been superior. I have been going to this practice for the last year. Dr. Heyde and the vet techs are caring and compassionate. They recently have added additional vets to the staff which I have not met yet. Dr. Heyde advocates that qualiy nutrition for your pets is the best preventative medicine. I agree as I have seen the difference in my pets and rather pay for quality food that results in healthy pets, shiny coats and healthy gums than high vet bills. The reason I am rating this only 3 stars as good and not excellent is that I have dealt with a receptionist, not Dr. Heyde's wife, that makes you feel that when you call, your concern is trivial and not urgent. More recently, my puppy who was exposed to kennel cough in a puppy pre-k class developed it over a weekend, sounding like a goose honk at night and not keeping down his food. When I called first thing Monday morning, which is their surgery day, the receptionist explained that they had no availability to see patients on Mondays, and went on to say that there was nothing they could do anyway for kennel cough, that it would resolve on its own. True, but everything I had read, including the guidance from the dog trainer I received when notified of the exposure, told me that it could potentially develop into something more serious in puppies and to consult a vet. I immediately called 2 other local vet practices and left messages: 1 returned my call whithin 5 minutes, apologized for not having any availability that day but emphasized that kennel cough could become serious in a puppy and gave me the name and phone number for a local Vet Emergency hospital and the name for another local vet practice. I tried the referred practice first and was able to be seen the same day with my puppy. The receptionist at Pets First did call me back 2 hours later, re-iterating that kennel cough most often resolves on its own most of the time but if I had any concerns the vet could see me in the afternoon. However, by then, after being dismissed in the morning about my puppy's condition, I was already on my way with my puppy to see another vet practice. read more

We used this office so far only twice to seek a second opinion on our sick cat and soon after to put her down. Here at Pets Firts we were treated with compassion, not just attention, We have adapted our cat 6 years ago and truly got attached to her. We were not sure how old was she. We came with the barely alive cat hoping that something could be done fore her. Dr. Hide try to help her as much as I could possibly imagine. He had done a massage of her stomack and colon and at the end after careful review of her mouth declared that the cat is at least 12 years old- we were heart broken thinking that she is 7 and got cancer being so young. This age comment helped us a lot. The second visit was with Dr. Connely, and we mostly cried as nothing could be done, but the Dr and her assistant and office staff were very kind and patient with us. Thank you. I've been going to Pets First for several years and want to recommend anyone looking for a caring vet to go to Dr. Hyde. He will not put your pet on drugs it doesn't truly need which I've appreciated and he also spends as much time as you need with him. He nevery rushes out of the room. I had a emotional situation going on with one of my dogs and I took it out on Dr. Hyde which wasn't fair of me. He handled the situation in a very calm and respectful manor which is why I'm writing to say that he is a great veterinarian. I still have one dog that continues to go to Pet First and when I eventually get a new rescue I will happily continue with Pets First because they care more about your animal than anything else and that's hard to find. read more

I have been bringing my dogs to Pets First in Haverford for about 15 years, usually Dr. Giuliani. I recently adopted a puppy who is now almost a year. She swallowed a 2'' piece of a bully stick and was gasping for air and gagging clearly in distress. I brought her as fast as I could to Pets First. As Dr. Heyde inspected her throat he continued to tell me bully sticks were bad and shamed me for giving it to my dog. The entire exam both the vet tech and Dr. Heyde were lecturing me; my dog was over weight, and not offering any solutions or help on how much I should be feeding her and so on. I asked for a recommendation on a dog food brand and he told me he feeds his dog a raw diet. After being no help at all I left with a bill and nothing but condescending remarks of how I care for my dog. I will NEVER step foot in that building again. read more

They have always given me all of the information regarding whatever is going on with my animals in order to allow me to make the best and most educated decisions regarding the care I choose. I have known the owners of this practice for four years. The quality of service they offer is on the highest level possible in the national veterinarian industry. Everyone should be aware that only around ten percent of the nation's veterinarians are using a holistic approach and actually are treating the animal and curing it. Most of the other non-holistic, corporate practices are just treating the symptoms with pills, which not only don't fix the problem but cause numerous side effects. The products that are used and services that are provided, have the intention on being the most quality ones that can be used on the market, even they are not the most efficient in terms of covering more health conditions and cutting costs.
