Sometimes there are good specials too and prices are competitive. There are some exotic food items for dogs too in the freezer, such as rabbit ears and feet if you might be into that for your pet. The SO and I stumbled across this pet store on a walk with our pup. We decided to check it out but saw they require masks in the store. Luckily, they have a box of them at the door. After some browsing, we decided to get a cat toy (homemade-like rat thing) and some dog treats. Kind of cool they have dog treats that you can purchase in bulk or just a single item. This is not a store you go to to get the cheapest price on something. This is the store you go to to feel like you're more than just your wallet and to have interactions with people to genuinely care about pets. For example, at checkout, the cashier was so nice and gave us some cat food samples to take home. I found out I'm not within the delivery radius, but they're only 10-15 min away and I could still order online and pick up in person. I continue to have a love affair with Salty's, and it is the gold standard to which all dog shops are compared. If you go 5-7pm they give 15% off all treats, which for us is a substantial savings! The location is great, the staff are pleasant and helpful, and I drive out of my way to shop there. I'd rather spend money on gas to spend my money here than go anywhere closer to me. We have a new dog, and are doing a bit of a tour of the local dog stores buying things for him. We were very impressed with Salty's. They have a lot of great toys, from good quality inexpensive up to the eco friendly US made. I think there is a very good balance between the pet accessories on offer and the variety of foods. By comparison, NoPo Paws on Killingsworth, which is a smaller shop, appears to have more food and less other stuff. The staff were busy but still took the time to have a nice conversation with us about pets and life in Portland. It felt very neighborhoody and friendly. We walked to the shop. I had the worst experience here today... I was eating at the food carts on Mississippi Street when a person rode up on their bike looking pretty stressed out. They asked if my friends and I had seen a dog walk through there. We said no, sorry, and she left. About 20 minutes later a dog comes running up. The dog came right to me when I called for her to "come here" she had no tags but a collar on. We were like shit, now what are we going to do? So I had my friends stay put while I ran down to Salty's to get a leash. As I'm checking out I tell the cashier the whole story above. They seemed decently empathetic. I pay, say thank you, and take no more than five steps outside of the store when my friend calls and tells me the dog's owner came back. I turn right around to tell them the owner had been found and that I would like to return the leash I just bought. I breathed a sigh of relief.. Only to have the cashier tell me "We don't do refunds." I look at them puzzled and say I was literally in here five seconds ago. They say yeah, I know, but we don't do refunds. It's store policy. I asked if they were kidding me. And they weren't the slightest bit understanding. I will never, ever return to this establishment. I understand having a policy but I had literally just walked out the door and had paid cash. It would not have been a big deal to give me my money back. For a pet store they don't seem to care very much about animals. I was trying to do the right thing and help a lost dog. Forget this place. read more

I love that Salty's staff is so wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable, caring, thoughtful and just simply kind! Our pets have heart conditions, allergies, and are truly just cats who are picky eaters, and have us doing their bidding. I'm thankful for Salty's staff because they take care of us each and every time our pets send us to get more food, treats or toys. Salty's will keep track of what foods you buy on a regular basis and make sure that when it's time for you to get your 13th bag of cat kibble free (not all cat foods may apply, but ours does) that we really do get it free! This system makes the food that we buy a very reasonable price. We know that our pets are getting the best food possible, helping them live long healthy lives! I wish I had one of these places in my neighborhood. This is a wonderful place to pick up treats for my kitty. I'm used to going to dog and cat boutiques that have tons of fresh home made dog treats but nothing for cats. The lady behind the counter was friendly, understanding and helpful. She directed me to two items she know cats are nuts about: turkey jerky and chicken hearts. The prices were really reasonable. I brought the treats home and immediately wish I had bought more. My finicky persnickety cat went nuts before I even put the treat in her bowl. She could smell the fresh, natural, preservative free goodie that was going in her bowl. This is great pet store! They're always really helpful and they give my pup a treat. The only caveats being that they don't have the largest selection of dog food (mine has stomach issues and needs salmon fromm with grain so I have to go elsewhere to get it) or any sort of rewards program. The rewards aren't a huge deal, but I'm there a few times a month so it would be nice to have a "frequent customer" perk like some of the other shops. Sometimes I get offended when the lovely ladies who work here are more excited to see my dog than me, but to be fair, my dog is incredibly handsome. I am somewhat average looking, and I do not lick noses. Nancy and Kat remember what my dog (and cats, who don't come with me) eats, and always have great advice for home remedies in case the kitty has dandruff. I blame my dog for my absence on Yelp. He's eight months old, full of energy, and is likely to eat all my laundry and chew the bathroom garbage if I sit down for 15 minutes to write a review. Over all he's a very loved, very sweet, terror. Salty's on Mississippi has become a "destination" for us. It's far away enough from my house that the dog gets a nice walk, but close enough, that we actually walk there. They have happy hour on their treats in the evening, and offer a lot of things in bulk, so they have been a great economical choice for puppy treats. Their staff is always friendly, full of advice, and remember my dog. (Sigh, totally touches my heart.) They are really knowledgeable about the typical treats and toys and food, but also about the best times to head over to a certain dog park, or nice walks to go on. I really couldn't ask for anything more from them. read more

In case there is any question about how great this place is, I thought I would add that I have had many pleasant experiences here, and at very trying times in my pet owner life. I will highlight just two fairly significant ones. My old greyhound was recovering from a spinal cord injury, and they voluntarily gave me a few puppy pads that had been returned to get us through the first few trying days. They were wonderful and kind and understanding and helpful. Recently I adopted a new dog who was underweight and a picky eater. They hauled out every sample of food they had, and by the time I left that place I knew exactly what this dog liked and would eat with enthusiasm. They don't just pretend to care, they really actually care about your pet problems. They do their research and take pride in what they do. I can enthusiastically recommend this shop. The only reason I don't shop there for all of my pet needs, is that I work in the neighborhood of their sister shop Fang and Feather, which I also love. All the stars. All of them. read more

Such a great store - I expected the typical pretentious "boutique" pet store with ridiculously overpriced bedazzled things and handmade $5 biscuits. I was pleasantly surprised that it was more of a pet supply store with a lot of variety on food, toys and snacks. They had a jerky table with every throw away pig/cow part you could imagine - I bought my dogs a dried cow trachea. Yum! Also picked up a couple random cool things I never knew I needed. Every time I go in there, I hear people asking for seemingly ridiculous things, and the employees not only know what they are talking about, but they either have said ridiculous thing or know where to get it. It's unbelievable. I recently had an injury, and had a hard time getting in there to buy my cat food. Nancy, the owner, told me they could deliver it to me (I live in the neighborhood). Our children (13 yr pit/boxer & 4 yr golden) always seem to know when we are heading to Salty's. It's their favorite place to shop. As for us (the humans), we love the staff. Friendly and knowledgeable, they are never short when we have questions about dog food -- our golden is allergic to all sorts of protein :/. Love the atmosphere and selections of food they offer. Living the life - barely working, but clearly enjoying the spoils of knowing the owner. The prices are good, but the frequent buyer card makes me feel like I won the lottery when after buying 10 bags of uber expensive cat food and litter I then get 1 free. I first came to Salty's as a wayward soul in search of brown rice cat food, but the lady who enlightened me suggested a variety of grain-free brands instead. I was turned onto Pure Vita; it cost the same (~$20) but is a much higher quality than my previous brands. Additionally, it's grain-free so my kitty cat is less hyper and has a shiny coat. Employees and patrons alike have been nothing short of cheerful and pleasant. They also have a great frequent buyer program for dog/ cat food & litter (buy X number of bags and get a bag free), cards are conveniently kept in-store, too. This would be a 5 star review if they carried more fun things for cats. It's a little dog biased right now, so it'd be cool if the cat section eventually expanded. read more

I like that there is a little bit of chaos in the store, it has a home-spun feel that conveys that it's real people running this store. They carry high-quality food and treats, although their selection of dog toys is a little limited compared to some other stores in town. That said, they'll order just about anything you could ask for and more. I love Salty's and so does my Corgi, Charlie. He will walk me straight to their door every time we go down Mississippi. The staff always has a treat for him and will compliment him on how polite he is *humblebrag* Obviously in pet-loving-Portland there are a lot of great locally-owned stores. However, Salty's boasts an absolutely incredible selection. They have almost every Weruva flavor on the planet, which is great, because my dog has spectacularly expensive taste. Along the same lines, I initially figured that the markup on food was pretty high, because, you know, local. But after some research I discovered that the prices here are the same as ordering online! Best surprise. It was particularly nice of Salty's to recently let me trade a bag of Orijen cat food (that my boyfriend bought on accident) for dog food with no receipt needed and no questions asked.
