Had a very disappointing experience with Foster Feed. I went to the feed store seeking guidance from this feed store from what I thought would be informed and helpful people. I explained at the time that I only have three chickens and was in need of a dewormer treatment. I was not informed that the product they suggested is intended only for significantly larger flocks totaling 264 lbs, and is not appropriate nor recommended for small-scale use. They completely misrepresented the product sold to me as usable for my smaller flock. When I attempted to return the item, which is unopened and I have the receipt, the store refused the return, stating a "no returns on medication" policy. However, this policy was not disclosed verbally at the time of purchase, not posted in the store, and not printed on the receipt. (Only a specific clause about final animal sales is printed on receipt, nothing pertaining to medications). Because I was not provided with accurate product guidance or informed of the return policy, I feel completely taken advantage of, as I was unable to make an informed purchase decision. read more

Foster Feed & Garden is Portland's oldest retail feed store, established in 1898! I've been spending more time in the Lents area lately, and this is one of the spots I've stopped by. I got suet to hang up for the birds, as well as some soil to start off my container garden. The store has all sorts of other stuff - cat and dog food, horse and bird supplies, hay and straw, live bunnies and chickens, and more. It's not a huge store but it is packed with stuff. Supplies change seasonally. They're old school - don't bother checking their website, just call in. Prices are a little higher than you may be able to find elsewhere, but in my opinion it's worth supporting this locally owned family business over a megacorp. Stopped in here for the first time after living here my whole life. Chick season was over so I didn't get to see any cuties. Was hoping to find some what sprys and maybe some millet in bulk. Did not find what I was looking for, but I did notice that a few of the items I have saved on my Amazon for small pets was cheaper here. Also the gentlemen at the counter were very nice. read more

I stumbled upon Foster Feed & Garden quite accidentally. I was driving home and saw a sign on the front of their building stating, "Last Chance Ladybug and Praying Mantis Eggs". This was completely serendipitous and fortuitous because I had just been talking with a friend about my needing to find just those for my garden. The store is very intelligently laid out, with many of the parking spaces being back-in docks for loading trucks with large quantities or livestock feed. The interior is rather cramped, due to the large amount of stock on all of the shelves. ANYTHING one could possible need for one's pet or livestock feeding needs or one's garden can be found here for very low prices. Staff is extremely friendly, engaging, enthusiastic, and helpful. My mantis eggs took a little over three weeks to hatch, but hatch they did. I'll definitely be back early next season to get some garden supplies and natural pest control. read more

Have had problems with moles and have used numerous plastic style traps sold by Lowes and Home Depot with little success. The smoke bombs work for a while but then they come back. Poisons are not an option because of pets and I don't want to cause a slow death. I happened to be driving past Foster Feed and Garden and they displayed on their outdoor reader board that they had mole traps for sale. I stopped in and was amazed of the variety of products that they sell here. Everything for your garden, chickens, horses etc. They even sell live chicks, hens, roosters and bunnies. I bought a Victor metal mole trap and within 24 hours it humanely stopped the mole from ever digging up my yard. I've used them in my neighbor's yard and had very quick success as well. I've purchased many items I've needed here for sick kittens especially upper respiratory infections and eye infections. They are always very friendly on the phone and in person and almost always have what I need in stock. The negative reviews are uncalled for. This Feed Store is a small family owned business so it is unfair and illogical to expect them not to have a bit higher prices or to carry every item you may need! If they don't have what your looking for, ask nicely if they can order it for you or simply go to a bigger store. read more

Yeah, it's somewhat more conveniently located, but whenever I go in here they give me the runaround about why they can't get stuff in stock that they've had in the past and that the warehouse-style feed and garden amendment store in Milwaukie has no problem keeping in stock. I might go here again just because sometimes I don't have time to go to Milwaukie to the other place that actually has the items I want, but in general I try to avoid foster feed because they're also usually somewhat more expensive, and I usually get some condescension or unwelcoming vibes when I come in here. read more

This is the best feed store in Portland. It is a real, old school feed store- not a fake wanna be boujee Portland boutique for wanna be "farmers", or whiners. The staff is knowledgeable and so incredibly helpful in many different situations that have come up with my chickens, dogs, and cat. I am so grateful to Foster Feed and will shop here for life. If your upset because they won't let you use their toilet, or because they won't accept opened and used antibiotics as a return, or because they closed early one day, then you need to shop somewhere that can better accommodate a self centered jerk, and this is not the place for you. read more

This review is entirely about how the store doesn't adhere to the mask mandate (which may expire soon but not now.) I do have to admit that their selection and price of fancy dog food is the best I've seen. BUT the last few times I went, they employees didn't have their masks on right or at all, and when I came in they quickly made a pretense of making them 'right,' but still the masks were a bandana and not over their nose. Bandanas don't do crap. BUT today I went in and the guy wasn't wearing a mask at all -- without compunction or explanation. It's sad that they would care so little about the health of others. So I will be going elsewhere for dog food from now on. read more

I may not be the kind of girl who knows a lot about feed and garden, but I do know what I like to see on Foster....and it's this place. I wandered in there with all sorts of ridiculous questions on how to raise the button quail chicks I bought off of craigslist (story for another time), and these people came at me with nothing but ANSWERS. Foster Feed is so far SE you'll wonder if you've hit Georgia, but it's totally worth it. In under 15 minutes I held a chick, a dove, pet a puppy and some kittens, bought a heat lamp and a house for my birds AND got help plotting out my garden. This is my favorite pet store by far. Been going here for years, their prices can't be beat. 40lbs of the best cat little I've ever used for $13, sign me up. Also, I love Advantage, the flea medicine for dogs and cats. It's just so expensive, when you have to purchase 4 at a time $60+, here, I can buy single tubes for cheap and be flea free. Not what you think- I've shopped here for years. Never again. I Loved the location and to not have to make the long drive out of town for my chickens/garden needs and Love to support the little guy. But yesterday's event changed that forever. I spent time trying to figure out how to help a sick chicken w/a helpful employee and friend (owner of chicken) on phone, finally we (w/employees help) decide on the antibiotic. I pay 30$ (bec they only sell in massive quantities) and rush to help friends chicken, friend who is in bed w/back injury. On my way there she calls and says "I worked my way out (in pain) to the chicken to see that it looks like she has worms in her poop, can you trade the antibiotic for the dewormer?" I turn around and w/in less than 10 min I'm back w/same employee at counter to explain my situation With the Owner/manager? now, who says "nope! even though I can see that it has not been opened, our policy is you cannot exchange or return it." He literally says "I don't care if you just walked it out to the parking lot I wouldn't take it back" ! Even after explaining I was LITERALLY JUST THERE, The employee confirms this to him, and I then had to purchase a massive amount of dewormer for another 30 bucks. So lame. Sometimes you just have to treat people like human beings, feel out the situation and realize we are doing our best and there's no harm done by bending the rules when there is NO HARM DONE, especially rules that you just made up! Absolutely ZERO customer service and owner was hiding behind 'policy' even in a unique experience where the product had hardly left the parking lot. It was not until I was frantically driving to try to help my friends chicken that I remembered the comment made to me and my friend on speaker phone by the employee several times: 'next time you come in we probably won't be carrying any of this stuff' and 'you are lucky that we have this because we are not restocking it' etc Seriously don't shop here if you can help it -super bad customer service. read more

Here we were, three 20 year old girls driving a truck for the first time and talking about how we should get some ducks for our dorm - we did not look like we belonged., We went up to the counter and said "just fill it with as much hay as you can". The dude that helped us threw those huge 50 pound bales like they were 3 pounds, was prompt and kind, and probably laughed at us as soon as we drove away but we laughed at us too. great experience, and way cheaper hay than a lot of other places. read more

Love this store. Have been driving past it for years. It looks so small and unassuming that I never stopped, despite my love for feed stores. I was finally lured in by an outdoor display of metal tubs. I was looking for a small one for my yard. My husband and I walked in and were surprised by the range of great products in a small space. The prices are excellent. Needless to say, we bought more than we had intended including TWO of the small metal tubs! My favorite purchase was an impulse buy from the counter - an egg nest of praying mantises and a small container for them. The owner was very helpful in telling us how to prepare for the hatching. They hatched this morning and we will be releasing them into the world today. Very exciting! read more

I feel bad giving only 1 star to Foster Feed not because the place in general deserves more but because the employees do. The owner on the other hand.... I have been here dozens of times because we live right down the road and all of the employees are super nice and extremely helpful. Unfortunately the owner is an impatient, unhelpful jerk that will never go out of his way to find something for you or refund a product that is faulty.....and his is always there. So even if the nice employees want to do something for you they usually cannot because the owner is looking over their shoulder. Their selection is fair and the price is average. They take in stray kittens which is nice but then charge way too much for them. My opinion: go to Wichita Feed instead. read more

Totally overpriced, not very knowledgeable, and mediocre selection. I have a farm very near this place and go way out of my way to go elsewhere. A lot of my issue is that they sell puppies and kittens, supporting backyard breeders, but mostly they're just way too spendy. Naomi's Organic Garden Supply is my go-to place, but in a pinch, I'll go to Wichita Feed. read more

Last trip to this place. They have a jenky return policy or they lack a real policy and just treat people like thieves. I went on day one in the late afternoon and purchased a water bottle while doing so I told the boy working I might have to bring it back if it didn't fit, he replied that it was no problem. I returned day two early afternoon with the water bottle, I presented the bottle and noted the need to return it and was then asked for a receipt. This was not mentioned on day one less than 20 hours prior. I presented the receipt and noted that I had been in the prior day to which the boy said yah I know I helped you. So he knew yet wanted to have me produce a receipt or not take the return. its poor treatment of a customer in addition and more importantly, I had my three children with me. It looks poor to them to have this form of dismissive distrust and lack of connection so why bother returning. I will go to the feed store on Johnson Creek they at least remember you and don't play games with you and yes I have returned one item to them a week from purchase and they didn't quibble. End result screw these guys. hire an adult with a sense of customer service and maybe you will be as busy as the other feed stores. read more

I just love going to Foster Feed! They are always so friendly and helpful... they carry my dog food to the car as a courtesy -something you do NOT find elsewhere these days. Their prices are great, and it's a friendly atmosphere with a sweet Great Dane dog who hangs out all day:-) I highly recommend them for both prices, product selection and customer service! read more

I just got into the chicken raising business, but I'd been stopping by and asking questions long before I ever bought anything from them. Just about everyone there was extremely helpful, courteous and knowledgeable! The one exception was one clerk was a little less knowledgeable than the others, but still very friendly and he did his best. I compared their prices to on-line sites as well as Home Depot and Lowe's, and they were much less expensive for heat lamps and bulbs as well as the wire weld fencing I needed. I ordered most of my chicks from an on-line site because FF&G wasn't planning to carry the breed I wanted, but I did also get 4 buff orpingtons from them. I don't know if they carry organic starter feed, since I wanted the medicated anyway, but they do carry organic feed for older birds, which I plan on switching to. This is a great store and I plan on going back for all my chicken needs! read more

This place is awesome. They always have what I need and are super helpful. I like that they update their sign regularly according to season to remind you what your yard needs ie time for mulch, or cover crop, or whathaveyou. They have their stock dialed in. And will even order for you if you need something special. read more

It looks like people either love them or hate them- I LOVE THEM! Great for chicken owners. I buy my feed and everything else there. They do carry everything to the car, break a bale of straw bedding if I don't need much, and Lloyd the Great Dane is always nice to see. They carry everything I have ever needed for my chickens.
