Update:: they have upgraded their fish department. Much better looking tanks, lighting, and variety of fish. The only thing I will say is some of their fish prices are off the wall. As a business owner I understand ALL OF THE City of Portland taxes, Multnomah country taxes etc... but on 162nd and division they shouldn't be charge more money (.50each) for neons than the Wet Spot Tropical Fish or Broadway Pets. Fish should be priced a little less than in town. read more

The employee didn't give me a receipt this store overcharged me their POS (register) isn't the best so I wouldn't blame the cashier. They owe me $13.98. My visit was around 5:00pm today the manager was swamped with other tasks, and gave divided attention to my situation. read more

If you're black, don't go in here. I tried to ask about fish. He completely just said oh the type of fish you're looking for is everywhere and then walked away.. when I was at the register he walked in front of me holding my daughter and did not even say excuse me. And then while I'm bringing up, he's reaching over me and my daughter with no personal space the whole entire time he did not give me any personal space like he did not respect me not one bit. I will never go back to this place. I will stick to PetSmart Petco or the other fish place that I go to horrible experience for a first time person. read more

A great little (mom&pop) pet shop in the neighborhood. Been here for years and they have a little of everything for the urgent supply your pet needs! Prices can be a little high but comparable to petco / pet smart, just closer to home- I have ran up here for a tank light that suddenly went out and they had plenty in stock. They have pups and kittens for sale and other reptiles, and lots and lots of fish. The aquarium side is kind of cool. read more

I really love this place! Every time I go in they greet me and give warm welcomes. I have gotten many fish from here before and they are always some of the healthiest fish I've seen and owned. I also bought A dog from here about 10 months ago and they gave me and my family so many supplies to take care of him. I can't help but feel like reviewers knocking this place because they had a fish die once they got home are really misplacing their own upset emotions. Why, you ask? I've bought discus from here. You know, the fish that are notoriously sensitive? The ones rumored to keel over if you look at them wrong? Yeah. Those. Anyways, they were solid for close to a year, and it wasn't breeding or anything that got them, it was the electric main to my house blowing on the PGE side and them not having a filter or heater for close to a day as a result. I can't vouch for anything but their aquarium section, but I've always been consistently pleased in that department. I've got a peacock eel from here that's about two years old now. Recently, I was on the hunt for Rephashy to feed my puffers (smearing on rocks so they have to scrape their teeth down on them to get at it like they do in the wild) and when I mentioned the detailed reason why (the one I just listed) the owner and/or shift lead was immediately enthusiastic about ordering some for the store and for himself as he'd never thought to do that and thanked me effusively. Walked in right at noon, open sign on. Employee not wearing a mask, didn't greet me, eating beef jerky out of a bag, which I'll totally overlook. Live your best life, queen. I 100% will overlook so so customer service in a family-owned business, I know how difficult it is to be a small business in a commercial world. I also realized that when you walk into a pet store not every employee is going to be an expert on fish, but the outright admittance that she can't tell a Molly from a platy and they're being kept in the same tanks really puts the burden of identification on the buyer. Whatever, just sell me the fish I point at and my expert at home will figure it out. That being said, the conditions these animals are being kept in our abhorrent. I honestly can't decide whether to purchase fish from this place to get them out of these horrible conditions or to not shop here because I don't want these people to have my money. The prices are a little better and the selection is pretty good compared to most aquatic stores, but in about half the tanks there are sickly and dead and decomposing fish, and I really wanted to think, maybe they had some die overnight, and they just haven't cleaned up yet. Pictured above is a guppy tank with molding and disintegrating fish floating on the top and stuck to the filter. The employee didn't come back after a couple of minutes when I told her I was definitely buying fish today, and I wonder if people come in to buy fish and then decide not to because of the deplorable conditions of the tanks, leading them to believe that everybody's a tire kicker. Believe me, when I'm ready to buy fish, I'm not a tire kicker. If she had come to serve me before I noticed that every tank in the store was disgusting, I probably would have walked out of there with enough fish for our 35 gallons worth of setup. Go somewhere else. That being said, if the owner sees this review and wants to have a conversation, I would be more than happy to come back to a store where the tanks have been cleaned and they can commit to taking care of the animals that they are holding for sale. read more

I bought three fish from this place, two had died just through the night and over the phone I was told "I usually only cover about half the cost of the fish you know since all mine are still alive but since it was so few yea I guess I can cover them"... great thanks, was gonna head back there but wasn't sure how I liked his response, then just two days later my third fish dies after being settled, it suited water, and fed. I'm thinking it may be the water or something they have there. So that sucks and my friend has said "that's what you get for going to A to Z" so I guess, don't come here lol. On to the fish section! I have been visiting this Local Fish Store/ LFS for many years. Located near 162nd and Division near Gresham you will find this little LFS. There is parking right in front of the store and they are not so busy so parking spots are easily found. The store sells a variety of items from; cat & dog supplies, bird & small animal items and live fish and aquarium supplies. Their focus on fish is tropical freshwater but they do also sell goldfish and Koi. They do have a decent selection of cat and dog food and items in their inventory. The fish selection also is not bad. You will find an assortment of Tetras, Cichlids and goldfish here. The store is locally owned and employees friendly. They also sell live black worms, crickets and mealworms. The price is a bit on the high side for aquarium supplies and fish but not outrageously so. It is cool that they also let you trade in fish for store credit. I often go visit to see what oddball fish they have. read more

If I could I would give a negative star. The animals there were in tiny cages in the heat. Most of them were dirty and the kittens all looked so sad and neglected. I honestly don't see how that is legal to have animals in those conditions. The bunnies and Guinea pigs were just living in poop and did not look healthy. We bought two fancy goldfish, I think they are Ryukin goldfish, that were $15 dollars each and they died in less than a week! Called to see if they would replace them, but they don't replace fish even though we had them less than a week! Our tank is an established tank and we have fish in there that we bought from A-to-Z about 3 years ago. *Edit: just noticed that the pleco that we bought the same day is also dead. We went to Caye's down the street and they have a policy for their fish: if within 7 days the fish dies, bring the body and a sample of the water. They will test the water and if anything is wrong with it, they will tell you how to fix it and give you a voucher to come back for the fish once the water is fixed. If the water is fine, they will replace the fish. read more

Everything you could possibly need for your pet can be found at this shop. They have everything crammed in there kinda haphazardly but the employees seem to know where everything is at. They carry live animals for pets and for pet food. They had rabbits, crickets, mice, reptiles, and kittens when we went. The employees were really nice and they were reasonably priced. This is one of the larger pet stores around- they have a large variety of items for all different pets. They also have fish, reptiles, cats, rodents and more for sale. The variety is great- the quality of care is not. There were 5 kittens in a single cage. Many bunnies and others were solo but their cages were very small. Fish were in too small tanks with too many fish in them. Several tanks were very dirty, some with numerous dead fish. It smelled, especially in the fish area, where there were also swarms of flies around. Dirty unused tanks and other supplies laid around in disarray. There seemed to be two staff working, who we didn't have any interaction with until one yelled bye when we left. read more

Social distancing nor PPE is enforced here so buyer beware! Both workers who did not have any PPE on would've bumped into me had I not moved out of the way. You touch rodents, bugs and fish all day but you can't wear gloves or a mask? If you're going to run your business, you can at least TRY not to spread a deadly, incurable virus! Even if there wasn't a virus, who is THAT RUDE to just want through you EXPECTING YOU TO MOVE. Unsanitary building and disgusting customer service. Never again. read more

I had a good experience with A to Z Pets. Purchased a few tropical fish and the assistant who helped me was genuinely concerned about the long transport his fish will have to endure (4 hours). Instead of keeping the fish in a plastic bag, with a bit of ingenuity he concocted a temporary foam box tank for them. Drilled a few air holes, secured a battery operated air pump, hand warmers wrapped in plastic bags, and taped the lid down to prevent any spills. I will have to say he went out and beyond for a minuscule purchase of less than $20 but he wanted to ensure they survive. Brought them back home to Seattle and released them into their aquarium. Happy campers now. read more

I have been reluctantly shopping here for my pets since it is the closest pet store to my home. Its always been a chaotic experience shopping there - sometimes the card reader doesn't work, more than once I've had to deal with one of the owner's kids at the register and the aisles are always overstuffed. The store probably has twice as much merchandise as it has room for. There are crickets on the floor everywhere. I have often seen puppies and kittens for sale of specific breeds for very high prices and have not asked if they came from reputable breeders or are rescues because I didn't want to know the answer (most likely the answer is no). After my last trip there however, I think I've had enough and I'm going to find a different place to go, even if I have to go across town. I saw a box turtle in a tub on the floor with no UV lighting or basking area whatsoever - turtles without uv lighting cannot absorb calcium and die a very slow and painful death consisting of shell deformities and bone disease. It was heartbreaking to see. The owner was there and offered help in finding the items I needed. When I asked for a feeder fish besides goldfish he tried to convince me that I was wrong in my belief that goldfish are not suitable feeders for my reptiles. I asked him if he had ever seen a turtle grow to be 30 on a diet of goldfish and he dodged the question. Its one thing to offer advice when a customer seeks it, and it is another to pretend you know more than a customer in order to make a sale. During checkout he got into a political debate with me about ecology - he believes that invasive species pose no threat to the environment because "nature balances itself out" and that protecting endangered species is over-regulation from the "nanny state". What a dangerous belief for a pet shop owner to hold! He has obviously never talked to an Australian, and I'm just glad he's not selling his ball pythons to people living in the Everglades. I would say don't shop here if you want a clean, stress-free, esthetically-pleasing and ethical pet store experience. The fact that this place hasn't been shut down baffles me. read more

After years of buying feeder rats from them I have noticed the store being on a steady decline. my snakes refuse to eat the rats that come from a-z almost as if something is wrong with them. The final straw was when we bought a cage from them for our ferrets. Took it home put it together and as we were doing that roaches started coming out of it. We have now spent hundreds in fixing what this shop did to our home. It's disgusting. read more

Went in to look for pet rats. I was horrified to see the owner grab a little guy by his tail, and lift him out of cage. That's probably the WORST way to pick up a rat. They shouldn't be handled like that, especially in front of a prospective customer. Feeder rats are one thing, they can be more aggressive and that may be the only way to get them out of cage, but I can't believe they handle a baby pet rat that way. Seems like a decent enough place otherwise, they were knowledgeable and friendly. However, I'm not going to give my business to somebody who treats a rat like that. Not cool. read more

They have a strange return policy when it comes to fish. I bought a cory catfish only to have it die the next day. When I called to ask about their return policy, a man said "I'll pay half price for 30 days." What kind of policy is that? The two big chain stores, even with their poor customer service, will refund the full price within 14 days as long as you bring in a sample of water from your aquarium so it can be tested. Oh well, at least now I know. read more

Much better. Previously, I've gone here for feeder mice and the place was in shambles. Smelly, cloudy fish tanks, not very well maintained reptile and avian areas, clutter to the rafters... Well, the clutter is still there, but the whole place seemed considerably cleaner and better maintained with happier animals and a friendlier staff. Whatever you guys did, keep it up. Awful. I went with my friend to pick up some mealworms, and all was seeming good. However, then we got to the back. There were rabbits crammed into tint cages, four per cage. I thought that was it, so we went to the front. And then I started crying, im not joking about that. There were the smalleat cages filled to the brim with rats and other rodents. The only thing in the cage was a dirty water bottle. I remember them laying over eachother, struggling to move. They were all obese from lack of exercise. I dont usually leave reviews, but people need to know about this. read more

A to Z pets is an awesome pet store. I believe they are a family owned business and also - bonus - they support their community! I'm a community behavioral health worker. My organization works with high risk youth and their families. It's a community based organization so we take youth into the community for 90 min sessions. A to Z pets is a primary location for many of our sessions. The staff is discrete (they dont call out our names or bring attention to the fact that we bring different youth in often multiple times a day) they are kind, accepting and supportive to all the youth we work with. I came here to get some rats. Which were easy to get but it was SO HARD to get a damn refund on their supplies the lady argued with me for 10minutes about how they don't carry a certain item which was a gerbil cage bottle but when we walked down the gerbil aisle they had the same Bottle that we were trying to return! The staff was very rude to me and even though I liked that they had a large variety of different unique pets I still think it's not worth purchasing the pets here if they're going to be that rude about returns and exchanges. They have the coolest fish and an amazing selection on products medicine and huge selection of dog foods , they are awesome I talk to ray and he helped me pick a dog food and treats that keep my dog looking A+ my little Diego loves ray !
