I took my kitty today to PETS referral center after she swallowed a long string. Fortunately, Lilly (kind, clear and compassionate tech!), Dr Burr and Dr Khary and Dr Allen were all outstanding. My kitty had to have an endoscopy and all went well for her. They found the string, took it out, and she is now home and happy. She has already peed, drank water, eaten a bit, and is in a good mood. I am so relieved and I am so very grateful! Every step was clearly explained, patiently, kindly, and repeated as often as needed. Lilly brought me in to see my kitty before they put her under general anesthesia and was so comforting (that helped me so much!), and Khary took all the time needed to thoughtfully explain home care (loved the "there are no stupid questions" stance!). Dr Burr was positive and explained clearly why the endoscopy was needed. Dr Allen made super sure to get the string even when it was hard to find!Thank you so very much to each staff member and provider for taking such good care of my cat and for helping me make decisions at such a stressful time. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the cremation services and it made us feel that Pets Referral made sure our Kitty's remains were really well taken care of during this sad time. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE! The doctor had no idea what she was doing. Disregarded crucial info about my cat and then decided to do more tests 4 hours after I reminded her what was going on. My cat spent the ENTIRE day sitting in his own urine in his crate. His eye then became swollen from this and the doctor then conducted further eye tests on him (without my consent). I essentially paid $800 for my cat to sit around in his own urine all day at this office, have the original issue be completely unresolved, and leave in much worse shape than when he got there. I would never go back here, its Oakland or Walnut Creek for emergency care for me. I took my dog in with a cancer diagnosis referral for my vet. They have a whole set of forms where they try and push you to a $20K set of chemo treatments which are only marginally more effective than the chemo which is half the cost. However all of it excludes massive aspects of the testing required to support the treatment and understate what the true cost would be. Incredibly manipulative of people in a bad state. I went with steroids instead of chemo and brought my dog back a week later for they follow-up they had me schedule with the oncologist. "Hey, so why are you here- the dog is really doing well" The dog is bleeding from a large open wound I had bandaged and the oncologist clearly did not actually look at the dog once. She takes me to the main place to get it treated and I just write my name down but bail immediately to go to a better vet. TEN HOURS LATER they call. "So are you in the parking lot? We can see you now." read more

I am at a loss of words with this clinic. Our dog is sensitive and nervous to begin with, which is why I conduct thorough research by vetting clinics since we've had him as a puppy. I don't let just ANYone take care of our family member. PETS Referral's emergency team is great and listens to us and our dog. Our dog feels at ease when he visits them. He was diagnosed with a rare form of terminal illness, as we're told by their oncologist. Our assigned oncologist was uncertain with the results and performed one confirmatory result. Then suddenly she called us urgently and rushing chemo. She convinced us that it's an aggressive form, but she did not provide physical evidence of results. We demanded for multiple confirmatory results and finally, we discovered his positive results. Aside from our results, their specialty team would care for our dog by feeding him without our permission. This was challenging because our dog has severe allergies. He suffered through multiple specialty and emergency vet visits weekly. We would see four different drs at two different clinics (including pets referral in Berkeley) because of severe, bloody diarrhea every 1-2 hours, day and night for two months. We cross eliminated multiple factors, and one day, we witnessed a tech hand feeding our dog treats without our consent in the lobby. (Honestly, would you feed children random food and candy? No. That's unacceptable. So, why do this to a dog too?) Since then, we prepared treats and strictly told their team to feed our treats ONLY to our dog due to allergies. Then, recently (about two weeks ago), we were going in for a routine treatment appt and it literally felt like another day at the vet. We waited in the car to pick him up. We received a frantic call from our oncologist stated that our dog was in an accident. Someone left him alone with his leash on. They found him choking and told us to come back if he has breathing issues. She blamed this on a tech who did not follow protocol and her story kept changing as we were asking her more questions. Something wasn't right and we rushed our dog out of there. Since we received weekly treatments from their specialty team, we are trying to keep him safe and comfortable, which is stressful for our family as is. Since the accident, we are still baffled and furious with this clinic. Our dog was NEGLECTED at PETS Referral and he is now suffering from severe PTSD at any clinic. He doesn't want us to leave him alone at all. We now have to maintain chiropractic appts due to the physical damage on our dog on top of securing a new oncologist for further treatment. Every single week, we see his life deteriorate further since the traumatic incident. We trusted this clinic and we would no longer recommend them to any family member or friend. If you love your pet as a family member, please save your money, your family's sanity, and go elsewhere. read more

We have had to use PETS emergency vet services four times in the past couple decades and highly recommend them. Their front line staff are patient and knowledgeable and their clinical staff are very competent and kind. Our last two visits were telling - both times with beloved cats who declined rapidly and by the time we got them to this vet, both had to be euthanized. The vets communicated clearly and presented the options - or lack of options - with sensitivity. When we took in our young dog with a bad bite, the surgery she had to have was really well done and she healed up beautifully. I have been impressed by the diversity of clients I see in the waiting room and the gracious and kind service all of the staff provide. We have had to use other emergency vets and this is the only one I would recommend without reservation. read more

Took my frenchie in the other night because I thought she ingested poison and was dying. I walked in and they took my dog right away. One of the assistants had assured me and that she wasn't dying that it was something else. Extremely embarrassing. My baby was cared for and was perfectly fine, the doctor explained everything to me and was kind. I felt like a moron but I will be back if my dogs need anything else. Last week, I had to rush my cat Boo-Boo here & he crossed the rainbow bridge. Everyone from the front desk, the doctor, vet tech, even the guy I talked to on the phone before I decided to bring him there was extremely nice & very helpful. I was by myself & crying but I didn't feel alone. I know it gets busy when there are a lot of pet parents bringing in their pets. (I've once took Boo-Boo in the past & I had to wait 4hours.) But luckily, that day, there was only one person waiting before me, so they took me in right away. So Boo-Boo didn't have to wait long at all. I was very happy about that. What surprised me the most was that a few days after the visit, I received a phone call from them that Boo-Boo's pawprint had come back & I could pick it up any time. I was surprised because I didn't opt to receive it. (Many vets charge extra for the service) They said that the service was all included in the cremation fee. How sweet is that!? Not only that, when I told them that I wasn't going to be able to pick it up any time soon and asked to mail it to me, they shipped it over night so I got the pawprint the very next day! What a great practice to be so considerate of their patients & their parents! And most of all, the price I actually paid (for euthanasia + communal cremation) was way lower than the amount elsewhere! read more

Upon arrival, I was told there are two clients ahead of , so naturally after the two clients had been treated paid and exited the premises. I inquired about how long of a it would be.( This was at the two hour mark of me waiting to be seen. ) I was told I couldn't be given an exact number, but they hadn't forgotten me, meanwhiletwo new clients proceeded to arrive at the facility, were taken back and treated pretty fair amount of time when I inquired I was told they were for radiology a different department, OK well then the question still lingered. What are the two doctors doing that were seeing the two patients prior to me when my initial arrival that now had no patience in the back doing? Long story short after waiting 2 1/2 hours to be seen by a doctor, which never happened, I thanked them for their help thus far which was just taking my dogs vitals, and exited the facility. I would never go back to this vet again, and I don't think that they Acted in a very professional manner instead of keeping me in the lobby waiting with a suffering animal they could've either have seen me or told me hey it's gonna be quite a wait. Maybe you could try a different vet. They can get you in quicker. Leaving me hanging for three definitely would not recommend bringing your animal here. read more

This place has really tanked. Years ago we could bring in pets when our vet was closed (after hours or weekends). Of course, PETS charged 2 or 3 times what our vet would have charged, but things got done in a timely manner. Not anymore! We've had 2 or 3 experiences (or lack of same) over the last year or so where we were put on a waiting list (we're talking hours) and given one excuse after another. PETS appears to be woefully understaffed, which is hard to believe given their prices. This past Sunday, after being given the runaround for several hours, we left. We called our vet the next day and she made arrangements for our cat to be treated at Pets Emergency in San Rafael. Difference between night and day! read more

My granddaughter's guinea pig got sick yesterday and so I had to utilize the emergency services of Pets Referral Center as my granddaughter was out of town. I am so impressed with their services. From the intake staff at the front desk, to the technicians, to the veterinarians. They were just lovely. Everybody was pleasant and professional. This is a busy place yet nobody presented as rushed or overworked. The exotic pet veterinarian- I believe her name was Dr. Gleeson took time to explain and offer options. This is an incredible spot with amazing service. Vet demand is higher than ever with pandemic dogs/cats soaring higher than ever, so my regular vet couldn't see my dog for a little wound/irritation on his paw. Was able to get here around 9:45 on a Wednesday and because it was minor they saw him about an hour later and checked on his paw and assured me it wasn't foxtail or anything serious, showed great warmth and care for his well-being, I never felt rushed with questions of my own..and amazingly I wasn't even charged for the visit even though they did a thorough exam and even cleaned up his paw a bit. If you need immediate service for your fur baby this is absolutely the spot to go to. read more

This is still the best pet ER around. Since my original review three years ago, we've been back a few times for foxtails, digestive issues and even a 2am case of kennel cough. Their team is phenomenal. They really know their stuff and don't over recommend treatments or procedures. If I have follow-up concerns, the vet has been happy to hop on the phone with me. I honestly like these guys even more than my regular vet, and I recommend them to everyone I know. Yes, you may be waiting a while... but that usually just means your pet isn't having a life threatening emergency, which is a good thing. When possible, they send you home or out to your car / a coffee shop with instructions to come back when they call. Completely worthwhile and reasonable. read more

I was treated with disrespect as I asked questions about my payment costs. The person even made snide remarks towards me as I tried to scan my debit card and it didn't work. A bag of medications was handed to me with no courteous manners or explanation of the of medication prescribed. Rude ancillary staff!!! read more

Communication here is so poor that I honestly don't know if they did a great job or a terrible job. My advice, if you need to go here: Prescriptions: Make sure you get the right amount. They gave me half the needed antibiotics so I had to make an extra trip. On the other hand, pain pills can be given 2 or 3 times daily as needed, but they gave me enough for 3 times. I would rather have come back if I'd needed more because they're expensive. Follow-up appointments: Try to make these well in advance because they usually don't return calls until you call a second time. Test results: Ask when to expect these back because it's often far later than is useful. Keep calling them daily after the expected date because they won't call you when the results come in. They wait for you to call them. Prognosis: It's very hard to talk to a vet here. I wasn't told there was about a 30% chance my dog would need a 2nd surgery. (Which, after they performed, sounded like he hadn't needed after all.) --------- Details: You usually don't get to talk to the vet directly, and the one time I asked I was told, "You can have *five* minutes." That would be understandable if they were dealing with emergencies, but this was for a scheduled appointment and also after I offered to have the vet call at his convenience. A few times I've called and left a message to set up a follow-up appointment or refill a prescription and no one has called back. Conversely, one time I called and had 3 different people call me back about the same thing -- none of them had talked to each other or made a note in the file. (I mean, it would be nice if they pro-actively set up the follow-up appointments they know need to happen, but...) They've both underfilled and overfilled prescriptions. My dog had pain pills that could be given 2 or 3 times a day, so I ended up having a lot left over. They did a 2nd surgery and prescribed him the same pain pills without asking me if I had any left, so I ended up spending a ton of money on pills I didn't need. On the other hand, they've underfilled antibiotics so I've needed to make an extra trip to get more. My biggest issue is that, because of all the mix-ups and lack of communication, I don't know if my dog ended up having unnecessary surgery or ended up skipping necessary antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. He had a broken leg, they put in a metal plate, and 6 weeks later said his bone had healed but now he had an infection. (As an aside, I don't feel like they really explained that there was a huge possibility that this would happen. I think it happens in about 1/3 of dogs who get metal plates.) They said they would probably need to remove the metal plate, but prescribed 4 weeks of antibiotics first (that they made me come in twice to get.) When I came in, I asked if I should wait to see if he really needed the surgery. They were like, "Oh, yeah, I guess." It felt like they forgot that they had ever told me he might not need it. I waited a short time - maybe 20 mins? - when they told me he did need the surgery. No one explained what their criteria was. Maybe he did or maybe he didn't need it, but honestly, it seemed like they had already made up their minds. I don't know if they even had time to do any diagnostics. They gave me antibiotics for a week but told me he'd need them for 2 weeks. They said they sent a culture to a lab to make sure they were prescribing the right kind, and they'd let me know. They never called me back. So I called on a Thursday morning (his antibiotics would run out on Friday.) No one called back, so I called again Friday morning. My vet wasn't there and they said another vet would call me back later. I explained that the antibiotics were going to run out and I needed to get more that day. I asked if he could call back within 2 hours. They couldn't guarantee that. He called back about 5 hours later. He said there was no infection. I asked, "Why did he need surgery then?" He didn't know. He thought maybe it was due to inflammation. (They hadn't prescribed any anti-inflammatories during the month before surgery.) He said he'd have my vet call on Monday. Today my vet called and gave some reasons for the surgery that may or may not be true. He has to say something, right? He can't say, "We made a mistake and your dog didn't need surgery." I told him that frankly, all of this should've been communicated before the surgery. If it had, I would've believed him. But at this point, I have no way of knowing what to believe. When I told him that their office needs to improve communication, he said, "I disagree." I told him this isn't really something he can disagree about -- these are facts: people don't call back, or too many people call back, or prescriptions are over/underfilled, the vet doesn't explain things in advance, etc. Basically, all the examples above. He started laughing. I'm going to look for other emergency vets in case I ever need one again. read more

"YOU CAN EITHER PAY OR TAKE YOUR DOG HOME TO DIE" I have never in my adult life written a negative review,, but from what I experienced at this place they will honor me with my first. My dog had collapsed on my porch late Tuesday 09/20/24, so we looked for the nearest emergency vet which was PETS referral center, we called this place first to see how much it would be to bring him in the lady I spoke with said $165, we rushed him to this place. They took our dog to the emergency room, then bring us a form to sign stating it would be $1000 just to take him in (NOT DONE WITH THIS PART) As we were worried about our dog and didn't have any other choice we signed. They put us in a room as we waited for him. Then came in saying our dog was in critical condition. After stating this, brought us another estimate that stated to keep our dog in an oxygen chamber and essentially maintain him being alive, (not to help him) would be anywhere from $3,800-$7800 for two days. Me and my family couldn't afford this, so then they informed us that our only option is to euthanize our dog, or take him out the place to die as he was completely oxygen dependent on the oxygen chamber. They clearly did not care at all, they were just rushing us to either give them our money or get our dog out of their place since we don't provide them with any money, they could care less. Since our dog was in very very bad condition we did decide euthanizing was the best decision for our dog so he doesn't suffer any longer. Since we were going to do this. The doctor came in and said we would have to pay $1030 in total including the original $1000 from when we arrived, GET READY FOR THIS! Before I went through the euthanizing process I wanted to pay, so I went up to the counter, and now my total is $1,250... so I ask why this is, and SINCE THEY DID NOT CHARGE ME THE $1,000 when I walked in, the price increases. Mind you, when we arrived. I signed the form, and they took me to the room. NOT ONCE WAS I ASKED TO PAY, OR TOLD TO PAY! So clearly they did this on purpose. I explain that to the ladies at the front and they all say, "well you should have paid in the beginning" as if these people even told me to pay! As I am explaining this trying to justify the situation, the lady at the counter says, "YOU CAN EITHER PAY OR TAKE YOUR DOG HOME TO DIE" and walked away. was absolutely astonished by this and I really wish I remember the name of who that was. They end up "removing the cost of something else" to go back to the original $1030. After that, we proceeded with the euthanization and we took our beloved dog home to burry at home. Overall this review doesn't give justice, as you simply just had to be there to feel the cruelty, and absolutely no care from this place. Rude Service AND Price Gouging On a recent Tuesday morning around 9:30 I brought my 13-year-old labrador to PETS to get her treated for an ear infection I had just discovered. I had planned to leave town on a much-needed vacation that morning, after an emergency at my job had already postponed my trip once, so I had my fingers crossed that it wouldn't take hours to get my dog treated. I filled out the paperwork and waited with my dog in the busy waiting room. I asked what the wait was and was told that animals in more serious condition would take priority. OK, can't really argue with that. After forty-five minutes, what seemed like a lot of animals had been ushered to the back. I could feel my vacation draining away... I went up to the counter and begged one of the receptionists, Please, can you please take my dog soon? She looked at me as if I had two heads and repeated: Dogs were seen in order of their condition. Like, obviously your stupid dog doesn't qualify, who do you think you are? Clearly, she didn't know who I thought I was to be even asking. So there I was, trapped in the waiting room for an unknown amount of time... Natalie, here's my message for you and your boss: Of course an emergency room is going to triage pets. But if you work in a place like an emergency room, you ought to be able to deal graciously with people who are frustrated waiting, who have plans and obligations that are being interrupted by their emergency room visit, and who are worried about their beloved pets. Like, you could make them feel a teensy bit better by saying, I'm sorry for the wait, we'll see your dog as soon as we can. And look sympathetic, not contemptuous. It wouldn't cost you anything. About an hour after I arrived, it was my dog's turn. How long will it take? I asked. About an hour, I was told. This truly seemed excessive--it does not take an hour for a vet to examine a dog--but I was hostage. I said I would go around the corner for some coffee. I came back after about 30 minutes, and soon afterward a tech brought my dog out to the waiting room. She explained the medication instructions and sent me to the desk to pay. No hello or "your dog was a good dog" from anyone after these strangers had had possession of my dog for half an hour. I wonder if she had access to water (it was a hot day), how long she was left alone, or if anyone even gave her a treat. Probably not. I get better treatment when I take my car to the mechanic. Oh, and the bill? $500. For something that would not have cost more than $200 including medication at my regular vet. The paperwork didn't even have the name of a veterinarian on it. And the whole ordeal took almost two hours. I had been to PETS before, and felt good about how they treated my dog (and me). But next time my dog needs emergency care, I'm going elsewhere. read more

We took our dog in with a terrible cough thinking she may have a foxtail in her throat. We waited FOURTEEN HOURS before we were seen by a doctor. The people at the front desk kept telling us we were "next in line" for each/all of those 14 hours. She was not eating/drinking all that time in case she needed a procedure! When we would ask (on the hour) about our status, we were met with impatience from an uncaring front staff member. One woman on staff was busy looking at real estate ads on her computer... It was a terrible ordeal and our dog was suffering, coughing, vomiting bile. To be fair, one of the women at the front desk WAS kind. Our overall experience was traumatic for all of us, humans and pup. In the 15th hour our dog was scoped and no foxtail was found. We could not give a lower review for this establishment. read more

Although the workers here are friendly & care very much for the animals, they are highly understaffed. When I dropped off my cat who was limping and bleeding, they told me they had a lot of patients and therefore they might have her in the waiting room for 2-3 hours. But instead, she spent nine hours there total before receiving care. She was dropped off at the PETS Referral Center at 10:30 am and I barely got to pick her up at 8:30 pm. Most of that time she spent in the waiting room without being seen, and I was unable to accompany her due to COVID measures. If I had known they were so understaffed that they were going to leave her there for so many hours waiting, I absolutely would have taken her elsewhere. They also accidentally charged me three times for the X-ray. I am lucky that I asked for an itemized invoice, or else I would not have detected the error and would have just thought they are wildly expensive and been overcharged. Thankfully, because I called and asked for the itemized invoice, I was able to get a refund for the extra charges. read more

The wait time is outrageous. I was reassured the wait would not be more than 2 hours after the receptionist heard that the wait was very long for Berkeley dog and can. 2.5 hours in we are still sitting here with four pets ahead of us. Apparently they have three doctors on staff so I really have no idea how this is taking so long. Only one urgent needs pet has come in since I got here. Don't trust their estimate for wait time and if your pet is anything short of dying, stay home or go elsewhere. read more

All I can say is this is the best place to bring your pet for care. The entire staff is knowledgeable and compassionate. My puppy who is a 9 week old bully accidentally ingested tobacco and marijuana and had to be kept because of high blood pressure and fast heart rate he was really out of it. When I asked I got told they triage and see based on what they assume is wrong. Someone brought a dog in here that was in its crate and giving birth. My dog Leo had a freak accident at a dog park and basically skinned himself between his shoulder blades on a tree. It was a *significant* Injury, He went to one emergency pet hospital for initial surgery, and when he was spiral-diving, they referred us to PET Referral Ctr, where Leo had the good fortune of to be under the care of Dr. Issacson. Refused to take in a stray dog. Claim to care about animals but clearly they don't. And to quote the woman I spoke to, "nothing is going to change the situation you're in." Not me, a poor dog that can't stay with us due to the fact that our existing dogs are resource guarders. Really a bad look on their part. read more

I had to go bring our pet there a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, when you have a pet emergency at night, there aren't many choices, but if at all possible, stay clear of this place. They were really polite & were able to see my 7 y/o cat who hates people with nearly no wait time! We brought our sweet baby in for a bloody bump on her back and they took her vitals & reassured us our cat was fine. Ultimately we saved a good amount of money and are glad our cat is okay! Don't even bother with this place. My pup is having issues, I needed to see a Vet asap! I called PETS Referral Center. The nice lady who answered the phone suggested I bring my pup in asap (After I explained my pups symptoms). I was very concerned and after talking to PETS Referral Center I confirmed my concerns. So I go online, complete the form and their response? They are at capacity. My baby is soo sick and they didnt care one bit. They are at capacity! I hate this place. Mainly because once you bring your cat here there's no chance they will live. I brought my senior cat here 2 years ago and she didn't make it. Recently I brought my 18 mon old kitten and spent $2800 for test that arrived a week later too late to help us diagnose what exactly he had. Dr. Jennings never called us back to discuss the test that arrived Monday and never bothered to call us once the remainder of test results came in. It was impossible to get records to share them with our vet, I must have called 10 times in an hour only to be placed on hold when my request was time sensitive. Luckily Dr. Michael (emergency vet) was there Monday night to guide us, but it was too late. The front desk people are mostly awful and don't care to email your records something that should take seconds to forward to the primary vet and owner especially after paying so much money. I am thankful I had enough sense to bring my kitty home instead of leaving him there to be neglected by the staff all weekend. read more

Our cat Gus spent four nights at PETS having a tumor removed and recovering from near death. I was totally pleased with the medical care he got but there were a few things that drove me nuts that they could do better on: --one night we get a call from a doc at 2 am telling us that he's not doing well and that they need several thousand more $$ to continue treatment. So, I had to get up then, go online, and e-mail them that, yes, I would pay. --then, when it was time to pick him up, we agreed with the doctor to be there at 10 am. We get there, park in the lot, call, get put on hold, are finally told to come to the front door for pick-up. So, we end up waiting on University Avenue, at the entrance for 40 minutes. Meanwhile, some jerk who works there comes out and tells us not to loiter. Then, to cap it all, they can't find his carrier and have to send him home in a box. So, good medical care, but really crappy at dealing with clients. read more

It's scary when your pet is sick and your not sure if they will be okay. My 2 year old Chihuahua was sick. I filled out to form on the website and called, they said to bring him in. It was not cheap, $1400 for all the tests exams and xrays but they take Care Credit and you can pay it off in six months no interest. He had an intentional blockage that they resolved with an enema and medication. He is back to being our happy dog again, totally worth it. read more

We are not happy with the service we received here a few weeks ago. Our dog was bleeding and uncomfortable. We waited for many hours, and upon our turn we felt our dog was not given a proper exam. It was also recommended we do blood work and x-ray ($1600). This did not seem right to us. We instead went to the emergency vets in San Ramon, they immediately found that she had a bad anal gland infection. They treated her and gave her the correct antibiotics, she's now doing well. The hours and $ spent at PETS were stressful and felt like a waste. read more
