I saw so many posts on Facebook about the Dutchens Festival, all advertising it as "the annual…read moreDutchens Fest -- the biggest festival in Pflugerville!" I was so excited to attend, especially since it was my first time. It was promoted as a fun, community-based event -- but the reality was completely different once we arrived. As a family of eight, we were told there was an entrance fee of $10 per person for one day, $15 per person the next day, and around $20 on the last day. You're telling me I'd have to pay $80 just to walk in with my family to walk inside a public park with vendors? On top of that, there were tons of small businesses, vendors, and rides for the kids -- which is great -but you have to pay for that as well. Nowhere online did it clearly say there was an admission fee just to enter -- $10 the first day, $15 the next, and $20-$25 the final day. And keep in mind, this was held at a public park. They completely gated the entire area off, like literally fenced it off every inch with metal gates so no one could enter without paying -- it felt like a lockdown, not a festival. It's honestly frustrating that a city like Pflugerville, which is supposed to be so "community-oriented," would host an event that excludes people based on whether they can afford to pay just to walk into a public space. What if someone just wanted to support local small businesses or grab food from a food truck? If you have a family of 4, 5, 6, 7 -- you're dropping $50, $60, $70, $80 just to get in. The advertising was misleading, and the setup felt more about profit than community. I really hope future events are more transparent and actually represent the community spirit they claim to have. Also, where exactly do these funds go? Because ,I have no clue. They should be ashamed charging people to enter a public park -- especially when everyone inside is already spending money.

This German-themed extravaganza is packed to the brim with pflavors, pfun, and a whole lot of Pflugerville spirit! Or, for those of you with a penchant for traditional German garb, dust off your lederhosen and dirndls, because wearing these gets you in for free! No pfun pfest would be pfullfilling without prodigious draft beers. Pfriends, they got'em here. Oh, the glory of lifting a gigantic beer stein and taking a deep gulp of that golden, frothy goodness! Oh, and the bratwurst! These bratwursts are the real deal, grilled to perfection and bursting with meat juice. I guess you could say that the pflavor is pfabulous! This is the second year in a row to visit, and the layout of the pfestival this year was nearly a photocopy of last year's event. But hey, if it ain't broke, don't pfix it, right? All-in-all, Deutschen Pfest in Pfluger Park is an annual option for anyone looking to indulge in some German-themed pfun, beers, food, games, rides, vendors, and some pfantastic music. So prost to Deutschen Pfest!

Enter off of Old Settler's and exit onto 79 by the Salt Lick. It took us one hour and 25 minutes to get to the ticket booth! Yes, we all had to pee. Like real bad. I almost jumped out of the car and used one of the road cones for shielding. Luckily they had some (4ish) port-o-potties once you got inside. That area is kinda dark though. Bring a flashlight. Maybe some snacks? Bring the dog and the kiddo's. Kids are gonna love this. The trail was cutely themed with a reminder of celebration to preparation to dinner time with dessert to Santa's Coal Mine to the North Pole Rodeo. It was all cute and made me wish I had some kids in my car so I could vibe off of their excitement. My favorite part was the end light tunnel. It was fully lit and would do the roving flashing thing every once in awhile. Unfortunately we got stuck with the steady on feature. Which really sucked because I wanted to experience the roving flash. There's a little Christmas Town at the end, so be sure to park and check it out. More lights, petting zoo, and little carnival. Also some food. Take the kids, they will talk about this for a long time. Good for Round Rock to bring in their own originality. Was this worth all the effort and the $15? Sure, why not? Is it four star worthy? Not really, but, one star for bringing attention to 'da Rizzle. This is year three, hopefully, they will continue to grow and improve.

If they only would charge for kids entry, that would be wonderful. This place is for kids up to 10 years old and mostly for toddlers and little kids. Despite all that, there were a few things the kiddos enjoyed: - The bounce house. - The corn patch was a hit. - Pumpkin painting (free with a ticket). - Watching some animals behind the fence (but no, this wasn't a petting zoo). - The $8, 2-minute pony ride. At the end of the day, the kiddo had a blast, and that's what matters most. However, the total cost--$30 for tickets (3 tickets), $8 for the pony ride, $8 for a gross agua fresca, and $10 for 2 pumpkins--comes out to $56. To be honest, that's pretty disgusting for what you actually get here.

I had a coupon for me and a plus one to have a reserved seat for free at the Dell Diamond, and I wanted to take advantage of it. I convinced my buddy to go with me to an opening series game where the Round Rock Express faced the Gwinnett Stripers. We agreed to go on a Wednesday to get our dollar hot dog night on. You know how that goes. Of course, going to every sporting event feels like they are going to nickel and dime you. It's $15 for parking, so if you can carpool, I'd highly recommend it. Beers range from $12 for domestic to $14 for craft. Everything is pricey. The hot dogs still remained $2 the whole night. Selfishly, I ate 5 over the nine innings. I didn't eat much through the day, and a decent ballpark dog was calling my name. As for the actual game, it was over by the second inning. The night was very windy, so no balls had a chance to go yard. The Stripers scored 6 runs at the top of the 2nd and it was 7 scoreless innings for the Express. Ay caramba. The nice gentleman in front of us was at the game with his wife and gave us good conversation. We watched kids rabid for the flying foul balls. Sometimes the game isn't even the most entertaining part because the stadium has a story of its own. The hot dogs were very nice. At a dollar, they could be lukewarm, soggy, and wrinkled, but they were dense, flavorful, and actually pretty good. Sometimes I wonder if dollar dogs are cheaper and they probably are, but you couldn't fool me. They weren't jumbo quarter-pound dogs by any means, but they were a normal quality-sized wiener. I drank a draft of the Love Street Blonde, one of my favorite common craft beverages, and got a can of Michelob Ultra from a very nice hawker that I obviously tipped. I just don't really like Michelob Ultra, I realize. I took a stroll through the Dell Diamond before leaving and there's a lot of cool spots from their yard in the back, which is great for just relaxing during the game, though the view isn't the most ideal for the action (great for bombs though). There's a full bar as well with baseball simulators and TVs showing other games, but if I'm paying money to park and watch a game, maybe that's not the move IMO. Regardless of the Express getting rocked by the Stripers, I had a great time and want to return to more Express games this season. As a young adult, the deals on weekdays are too good to pass up. Thursday might be a move in the future for those $4 domestics, $7 drafts, and cheaper food options around the park. Maybe next time the Express will get more runs than hot dogs I ate. Surprised that very few people were watching the game - too busy getting food at concessions which was distracting for watching the game. Lots of on field games for kids - guessing pre-arranged.
