Yesterday was our first experience going to a store like this. I admit, my impression of shops like this beforehand was pretty shady. However, my husband and I had grown weary of looking at bins and jars of old coins and jewelry, both of which were from our parents. We'd done a massive clean up over Christmas and moved these items from closet shelf to closet shelf. So, we finally decided to part with them rather than have them continue to collect dust. My husband's mom's jewelry consisted of three rings, one pendant, one pair of clip on earrings and a 22 inch silver herringbone chain, which my friends had said was white gold. He also had an interesting silver dollar with Lady Diana and Prince Charles on it. We went in the morning to PGS Gold and Coin in Wheaton. You have to be "buzzed in." Mary was VERY helpful, sweet and knowledgable. She looked carefully at all the items, discerning immediately that two rings were 10 carat gold, one was a mix of 24 carat and 10 carat and the earrings were strictly costume jewelry. The pendant was also 10 carat gold. (Interestingly,the silver chain was NOT gold, even though the clasp had the 14K "stamp" on it.) She looked at items visually, used a magnetic device and other techniques, as well as weighing everything. Having an expert look at these items was great learning experience for us. Mary carefully described what she was seeing, explained how 10K, 14K and 24K differed and gave us a price that was more than fair. It was our decision if we wanted to sell the items or keep them. We chose to sell her of all of the items except the silver chain. After such a pleasant experience, we both returned that afternoon with THE COINS. My husband had a tin of so-called treasures and I had a huge big plastic container containing jars of coins, some even in an old tootsie roll bank (which was hard to open.) We were very lucky that the shop was empty during that time, as we brought a LOT of items. Mary began with my husband's tin from his parents, loaded with coins, most of which were basically "face value." A few coins of the coins had value, however. With my bin, Mary sorted thru literally thousands of coins, using a magnifier device to look closely at some of them. More than 2/3 were merely face value coins, which we later brought to a bank. However, I had one silver dollar from the 1889 that was worth $12 dollars! There were so many coins that the other lady working there assisted Mary with sifting through all the coins to identify the solid silver, wheat pennies etc from the face value coins. What a job! Some jars hadn't been opened in so long that my husband had to use brute strength to get the jar lids off! (I would advise making an appointment if you have that much stuff.) Luckily, it was in the middle of the afternoon and only one other customer came in at the beginning of this process. Mary patiently added up all the coins of value, and again offered us a fair price. (The price seemed to be based on weight primarily, with a few "special coins" off to the side being worth more due to their rarity.) Again, it was a nice experience. PGS Wheaton evaluated 4 pieces of jewelry and offered to buy the items for $300. These 4 items were later professionally appraised at $17,840. The appraiser said I would be fortunate to sell the items for 1/2 the appraised value. Let's give PGS the benefit of the doubt and assume I can get 1/4 of the appraised value which is $4,460. Look at all these positive reviews. Reviewers use words like, 'knowledgeable' and 'fair', based on what? An honest review would say something like, "PGS almost begged me to post a review. All I really know is they seem live very nice people." My advice is always get a second opinion or a professional appraisal, especially with gems. read more

Every time I've found myself needing to liquidate my precious metals or other valuables, I go to PGS in Wheaton. The people there take the time to really give your items a thorough and precise inspection. They don't just scratch your jewelry and take a guess, they use several methods including state of the art technology to determine EXACTLY what purity your items contain. I can trust that I will be treated fairly and honestly every time I visit, and the people working there know I am and recognize me even if it's been over a year since my last visit. That's not something you find every day. They also are very kind and patient when I have questions about items I'm not sure of in terms of value or if I want to sell. In fact recently, I was distracted when I asked about an old I.D. bracelet I was fond of, I accidentally put it in with the items I was selling and left with my cash offer. When I got home, I panicked, thinking i had lost my bracelet forever. I reached out, knowing it was a long shot because it was a holiday weekend. But not only did I get a quick response, they said they would look to see if they could retrieve it when they got back after the holiday. Not only did they retrieve it, they generously gave it back to me without having me buy it back. If that's not extraordinary customer care, I'm not sure what is. I wasn't expecting that at al and it made me feel like a very valued customer. I've been going there for years and I don't see myself taking my precious metals or collectibles anywhere else. They pay the most, care the most, and that's why I trust them the most. I would recommend PGS above any other gold buyer. Hands Down. They take the anxiety out of selling my unwanted valuables, and that is truly priceless. read more

I have been going to PGS coin for quite awhile as it was close to my office. Last time I was there I had a feeling I was not getting a good price for my coins gold and silver. We were in and out of there with a check for our coins in about 10 minutes. I was expecting some sort of receipt that would list what I turned in and the values for the different coins but that did not happen. My first visit to a PGS. Very cold environment. Asked for my ID to make an estimate on a coin I brought in. I did not give it. No other place asks for your id. The woman I talked to was rude and condescending. She also took my coin out of my sight which made me uncomfortable. When I asked to put the coin back in my sight, I was reprimanded with the response, "don't worry, we're not gonna steal your coin." She finally gave me an estimate and it was $100 less than I'd received elsewhere. What a racket and a dump. Save yourself the headache and go to Fox Valley Coins. If I can give a negative 100 stars I would. This place is a total rip-off!!! I came to the store with a whole bunch of diamond jewelry with carats ranging from .5 ct to 1.12 ct and all in 14k white gold. The monster that calls herself Susan made us wait two and a half hours, while she was on eBay looking at bottom auction prices of "similar" items, and then insulted us by offering not even 1% of the value of my jewelry. We had a wedding band that is absolutely brand new, with 1 full carat diamond, on a 14k white gold, bought at Helzberg for $3000, and she offered $190, saying that's the current market value and she's not the one dictating the prices. Ironically, they had a similar style USED ring on their store display with less carats and a smaller band, which they were selling for $650. That was a total joke!!! Maybe if we came in with the hope diamond she might have offered us $600 for it. They prey on desperate people and then make a killing! DO NOT GO HERE!!! If you have valuable items, just post them on eBay because that's where they get their prices, and offer you only 25% of the lowest similar items. The sad part was, there were many people who walked in while we were there and then got ripped off right in front of us. This lady doesn't know what she is doing!!!!! First offers me a low ball price when I was quoted $70 more from a coin shop. She makes a phone call and then is able to pay me the difference plus $16 more....seemed a little shady, but didn't want to drive back to the coin shop so I went with it. Then she neglected to tell me that she was giving me a check but said I could cash it next store at Chase and they won't charge me the $6 fee because they work together. I am at the teller window when the Manager approaches and said I need to go back to the gold store because there is a problem with my two pieces of scrap jewelry. When I got there she said my items are fake and fraudulently marked? Remind you that I just had both piece thoroughly checked at the coin shop, and I have been in the jewelry business for 20+ years.
