The interior is quite comfortable: dark booths and soft lighting. But it is still amply lit. While there is a long bar on one side of the restaurant, at least while we were there, there wasn't any loud bar-type background noise/conversations. We started with the appetizer: Inside Out Crab Rangoon, see my pic. What you see in my pic is a bowl of their house made cream cheese crab Rangoon dip which is surrounded by crispy wonton chips for dipping. The dip had the requisite crab Rangoon flavor. There was ample crab meat and the dip was quite creamy. For our palates, it was too sweet. The wonton chips had the flavor down pat, but were quite greasy. We then shared the Chicken Deburgo, see my pic. These are chicken breasts grilled and topped with mushrooms and garlic butter. The chicken breasts were grilled just right. The mushrooms, while not plentiful, were flavorful. The risotto was bland. But when combined with the green beans, which had a ton of garlic (you can see the garlic in my pic), made a great combination. We also shared the House Angus Burger, see my pic. As you can see in my pic, this burger is a fully sized 8 oz burger and was cooked to order. The flavor of the meat was good. My side choice was their Brussel Sprouts. These were caramelized in a balsamic vinegar reduction, so there was a bit of sweetness. They were also good.

I am going to say the gals name at the front was Sasha and I loved her warm welcoming energy. I got a mocha latte and it was gorgeous. The flavor was fantastic. I need a larger size of this next time. Loved the foam and deep mocha flavor was phenomenal. Made my lunch trip worth it and I knew then that the food was going to hit well. I got the BLTA and added the chicken after asking Sasha about it. She suggested adding the spicy mayo and the suggestion was spot on. What a delightful sandwich. The sourdough had a hard crust but a soft center toasted to perfection. The creamy avocado was velvet smooth mixed with the spicy mayo, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, crispy smoky bacon, and the tender chicken was incredible flavor that left you satisfied. Just a wonderful lunch experience and then the bells starting playing the star spangled banner. Listen to my video, sorry it's short I didn't want to accidentally record someone. I feel like Sasha should have given a warning about how addictive this was, but then in away she had. She mentioned there can be a long line in the morning and I can see why that would be. I can't wait to go back and get this sandwich again. I would recommend her suggestion on the spicy mayo. Chocolate & Caramel Chunk Cookie with Sea Salt. Oh my goodness don't sleep on this cookie. Crisp edge with nice chunks of chocolate and caramel and the salt just sends it next level. Feel like I need this in a brown butter version as well. This was the trifecta of lunch- Latte, Sandwich, and Cookie. Made doing my civic duty a little better because now I had a solid lunch option and a reason to go back. I also need to try a scone when I return. I also learned they have a chicken salad sandwich on croissant so now I am trying to make it back so I can sample that. There are some really good options on the menu and they have local coffee plus everything you would expect in a gem of a coffee shop. The service was stellar and the vibe was warm and welcoming. Got a cookie for my lady so $32 I believe with $5 tip and the chicken is worth the add on. A great value for lunch with quality fresh ingredients and the cookie is large.

Speaking of which, many times you'll see friends and family also dining here. They have a super takeaway business. I've provided copies of their menu to help in your takeaway ordering. Today, we had the dine-in lunch specials. Each lunch came with soup; we choose Egg Drop Soup and Wonton Soup. Both soups, see my pics, are full of ingredients and piping hot (particularly welcomed on this cold, windy day). Each broth was rich and flavorful. The wonton soup had crunchy veggies inside the wonton. The Garlic Chicken was full of flavor. The garlic while pronounced wasn't over powering. The diced water chestnuts were crunchy which complimented the moist chicken and was good carrier for the garlic sauce. The carrot slices added some flavor but really added more crunch. The side egg roll (also comes with the lunch special) was super crunchy and mildly flavorful. The brown rice was a great way to enjoy the remaining sauce. The Chicken with Broccoli had the same sides as the Garlic Chicken. However, its sauce was milder, yet still savory.

The Drift wasn't quite open (it was 10 minutes before 3:00), so we took a walk to kill some time - and then found this quaint little coffee and dessert shop. While the lady who greeted us was admittedly loud and borderline obnoxious, she was quite friendly and encouraged us to stay even though it was just a few minutes before closing time. We decided to have coffees here rather than alcoholic beverages at the Drift...and were quite pleased with the coffees that they served. My wife ordered the Cafe Au Lait (Milk Coffee - see picture) and I went with the Caramel Macchiato (see picture). My wife and I are admittedly a bit on the 'coffee snob' side, with an expensive fully automated espresso machine at home - and we both found these coffees to be very good. A solid, quality cup of coffee with great flavor and nice creme on the top - and at a reasonable price. I look forward to having something to eat here during a future visit to Winterset! The staff was very quick and efficient on this busy Saturday lunch hour. They were prompt and I was seated in minutes. The dining area is simple, straight-forward. You can see my pic of the lunch specials, there is a lot of variety - order by the number and you're done. This day, I ordered the Special Lunch #3: burrito and taco. My order arrived very quickly. As you can see in my pic, it's a simple plate: a small burrito (I assume lunch sized and priced), an incredible amount of rice and my hard shell taco. The burrito was filled only with ground beef. The ground beef didn't have any flavor, in and of itself. The tortilla was fine and the red sauce had a very mild enchilada flavor. The rice had standard flavor. The hard shell taco had the requisite items: shredded chicken (which was my selection), shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. It was good that the shredded chicken had been dredged in a light ranchero sauce and was very moist. The salsa with chips was good, a bit of spice but not too hot. I used this to compliment the burrito and taco.
