Don't come here! Literally all the employees are rude! Seems like the mechanics are scared of the "owner" cause when I pulled up, I needed a simple fix for my vehicle. One of them tells me to go inside their check in area to ask if I can get it done, there was nobody inside. Then one of them proceeds to tell me I have to ask some guy, I'm guessing the "owner" which he was busy doing something else. Later on, another guy proceeds to tell me he can do it. I was appreciative of it at first, I was even going to tip him, but than later on he proceeds to tell me, the air pump is broken. Like how! Phillips auto not only fixed it but did it for a lot less and did way more !!!! They can be really busy or slow depending on the day. He saves the parts and you see what he fixed and why. Living in Westchester I didn't want to drive all the way to the OC for a brake and lamp inspection for state certification. I called all the places with a brake/lamp license around Venice, Culver City, Santa Monica, L.A., and they all charge $95-170... *if your car passes* otherwise they make you pay for repair work there too. Phillips charges you $70 for the inspection, and if there's anything wrong, you're welcome to fix it elsewhere (or yourself), and they will re-inspect your car for *free.* this is written on your work order copy. I called to ask about a Brake and Light inspection and even over the phone I sensed the these guys are pros. Tareq, who runs the place explained the process and said it would take about half an hour at a $70 cost. (The shop I called beforehand asked for double the price and said it would take two hours...). When I got there everyone was courteous and professional. While I was waiting (about 25 minutes) I could see that Tareq was very straightforward, honest and professional with everyone he deals with). When the test was done he let me know the car passed and proceeded to fill out the paperwork. Only after everything was done he accepted payment. Most test facilities demand payment in advance. In this day and age of too many rip offs, I gladly recommend Phillips Auto Service on El Segundo Blvd. in Hawthorne, CA. Today was my first time taking my car to Phillip; I got a recommendation from a work mate after my own mechanics could not find what was wrong with my 94 Wrangler. It was running like a DOG! I was told to wait until it got worse and then come back. What? Worse? You mean like stuck somewhere out in no man's land?? I looked on the internet and called around and didn't feel comfortable with some of the reviews I read and some of the charges just to look at your car. So my friend at work told me about Phillip & said he would not over-charge or rip me off. In about 2 hours my car was in, diagnosed and fixed for $100!!! Are you kidding? When do you leave an auto shop for $100 when you don't know what's wrong with your car & your have to trust the mechanic? I would venture to say almost never. And to top it off...whatever they did (look, I'm a girl and I don't know details) my Jeep is running better and smoother than it has for years. I now have a new mechanic. read more

Phillips Auto charges $70. No appt needed. And should you fail the test, they do not insist that the work has to be done at the shop. Needed a "Brakes and Lights Inspection" for my car as requested by the DMV. As I found out only licensed shops can perform this inspection. A search for the closest shops licensed for this matter gave me about 3 options. Non that close to home, but the closest ones. Reading reviews of these 3 places took me to a sure conclusion, Phillips Auto Service on El Segundo Blvd, City of Hawthorne was the best shop of them all I was not wrong. Nice shop with ample patio and parking space. I was greeted by probably the owner. Perhaps manager, but let me tell you immediately you feel you are at the right place. Courteous from start, professional and well mannered, this person explained that yes, indeed, that shop was licensed and he could help me out. In about 30 minutes I was ready and done. Staff mechanic working on my car was also same, professional and knowledgable. Clean and well mannered. Also saw a city sweeping truck, one of those street sweepers, very specialized vehicle come in for repairs. You bet the city will no trust its vehicles to any grease monkey. Phillips is a great place. I originally took my truck to him to get smogged when the DMV told me I couldn't reg my car until I smogged it :( So I found him down the street. Fast, easy, and very fair. Sure he didn't greet me like an In N Out Burger employee the first time I met him but he is more honest than most all mechanics out there! Since then I've been back 3 times and he is a very nice and generous guy. I thought I'd return the favor for his generosity with this good review on yelp, google and yahoo...I'm not part of his business. Just met him in Jan. He helped me with a problem on another car I needed to test and found out he couldn't do the smog after diagnosing the computer, it was test only so he sent me down the street and didn't charge me which was REALLY generous, he just said to come back for other work! So I came back last week with my mom's car and did a lot of work on it for a great price. I think I'm going to get him to rotate my tires today. After calling and visiting 30 different mechanic shops, all I can say is that Philips is the most honest, trustable, and generous mechanic shop owner I've ever met in the entire LA County! There are several mechanic shops who will work on your car, there are many who will deliver their work as you want, there are some who are honest (and very expensive), but there are few who are honest and very generous, and Philips is one of them. Maybe you will think I'm getting paid for writing this, or that I am somehow affiliated with this business, which is completely false. If you have called, visited, or taken your car to many other mechanic shops, you will realize that it can turn into a very expensive, risky and frustrating task, since many shops will work as monarchies and make their own rules. However, this is the first time in 2 years that I find an honest and generous mechanic shop owner. The story, I came to this shop to check a P0720 engine light problem I've had in my civic. Many mechanic shops claimed it was a problem with the transmission, some electric auto repair shops still claimed I needed a rebuilt transmission, and one claimed it was a problem with the circuits, but wanted to charge me $400 to $600 (Angel's). The Civic had a recent rebuilt transmission (very expensive), and I didn't want to go thru another rebuilt transmission bcs I knew that wasn't the problem. I had a Smog Check Test hold on my registration renewal, so I couldn't register my car until the engine light was fixed. Hopefully, I was blessed to be referred to this shop by Steve's. Phillips treated me more like a friend than a costumer, which facilitated the communication. So after looking into 30 different mechanics for half a year, Phillips was the single one to address my problem and fix the engine light for a reasonable price. I'm so happy now... If you are reading this Phillips, thank you so much for everything from the bottom of my heart. Ok so I needed a brake and light inspection for my wife's Honda and man they hooked me up I drove in and Terric hooked me up with beyond service he had 2 of his guys work on the car within 5mins. I had a great experience at Philips today. I have a 2002 lexus. The screw holding the license plate broke off in the screw hole. I think this happened due to rust since most of the car's life was spent on the east coast. The lexus dealership wanted $250 to tap out the screw and put in a new one. Completely ridiculous, so I took my car to Philips expecting to pay about $20. He probably spent about 5-10minutes working on getting new screws in to hold the license plate - since fragments of the old screw were clogging the threads etc. At the end, he didn't charge me a penny. Very nice! After this experience, I would gladly take my car back and recommend them to other people! read more

I came here for a brake and light inspection as required by the DMV for a salvage vehicle. The indian owner failed my vehicle stating the daytime running lights were not working when the headlights were turned on. He told me he could fix it. I took the car to pep boys down the street to get a second opinion and the guy showed me the lights were working perfectly. I had to return to Phillips Auto and show him the lights were working fine and he argued that the daytime lights needed to be on while the headlights were on. After showing him the car manual that stated he was wrong, he finally passed the car. Only reason i gave this place 2 stars is because the price of $90 was better than other places i looked at for this inspection, but i probably should have paid the premium for the time i wasted in addition to the owner trying to scam me to fix something that was not broken. read more

I highly recommend them from Smog Inspection, tune up to engine rebuild. On my three visits it was a constant line of people coming in. Mostly repeats which speaks volumes. I recently purchase a car from a private owner this car has a hydraulic suspension problem that i decided to buy as-is and the last record of service the owner had was with Phillips Auto Service a few days before he placed the ad the previous owner took the car to the shop and they did something to keep the suspension elevated (a temp fix). I decided to call the shop and figure since they worked on the car they knew the issue so i would just give them the job right? A bit of my background is i worked with Hydraulics on injection moldings, i have an idea on how it works with the car but thats not my field of knowledge, Upon calling the guy was nice i told him about the car he said he was going to look for the estimate as to how much it would cost to fix the car and he would cal me back but never did i had to call him hours later. when i called i ask how much to fix it and in the mean time if they can elevated again while i got another car to drive to work, he said yes we can lift it for $150 i first ask if he personally did the job he said yes so i mention to him why arent the elevating buttons working anymore? and if they had removed any relays to prevent any of the pressure valve unit from releasing or other units linked to the unit if so if he could let me know what relay of fuse so i can simply put it back to how it was before he did the initial job. I wanted to elevated how it was initially before he worked on it in the past so i could be able to drive it to him and give him business of over $1,200 of work or more He then stutter and said the guy who worked on it is not here so i called the following day and ask again if he worked on it and again he reply saying the guy who did is not in and he wasnt able to tell me what was done to the car. How can a shop not know what work was done to a car how can you not have a log in the event en employee is not in? instead of helping me take the car to him he decided to say "why dont you look some place local "YOU ARE VERY COMPLICATED TO WORK WITH" AND THEN HE CLICK ON ME. i will keep you guys updated im having a Mechanic coming over today to elevate the car and inspect the unit to see what was done and what he wanted to charge me $150 to elevate for a temp fix, i hope it wasnt a relay removed or a simple wire Harnest unplug that does not cost $15 on average a mechanic charges 45HR plus parts to unplug or remove something for $150 no integrity, to some this may not be a big deal but think of someone whos car stalling and maybe a simple plug got unplugged and in a matter of 3 minutes it gets fix but they potentially lie and say as a whole new big deal that he charges over $200 for that his stuttering and his refusal lead me to believe he was trying to overcharge me for something that may not even need attention. if this was my mom taking the car to him and if in the event he is not honest and try to make money of anything then my mom would have given him the weeks check, like on the news you go in for an oil check and come out with an engine replaced . This review is to tell you my experience from first impression and given my knowledge and asking him questions with his terminology, .he was nice to me at all time .when asked questions and concerns he could not answer me .nervous to answer me a question i asked about the components and not able to present documentation is definitely not a good way to start .if i would of simply said yes he would of charge me and not been able to tell me what he did or what i was charge for. I will keep you guys notice of my diagnostic and see what needs to be done or what was done to do the temp fix. read more

If businesses can really nail simple things then I consider them quality enough to perform more difficult tasks. All I needed was a headlight bulb changed. I had my own bulb, I just didn't have the tools to remove other components under the hood that were in the way. Even though it was a busy Monday morning, they immediately attended to my car and had me in and out in less than 10 mins for only $10. I could not have wished for any better than that. I will trust them for more complicated repairs when they arise. read more

Today I took my car to this shop because I suspected there was something wrong w the brakes and belt. When I came back to retrieve my car he said he changed the brakes and belt. I asked to look at the old parts to see their condition and saw they were in working shape! When I asked why he changed them even though the parts weren't bad, he told me he changed them because I asked him too and then told me I should keep the old parts to use in the future. Then when I suggested that maybe the problem with the belt was that it needed to be readjusted, he said yea that was probably it. Bottom line this guy knew what was wrong with my car but didn't care he just wanted to make money and changed out perfectly good parts to charge me. I ended up wasting nearly $300. ******************************CUSTOMER BEWARE************************** I needed a brake & lamp inspection after my car was salvaged out after a rearend accident. I came here and was told I had a HAIRLINE fracture in my brake lens and therefore told to buy an entire lens unit with bulb, wiring, and housing to be re-installed due to this HAIRLINE fracture. I asked a cop after Phillips refused to grant me my certifications if he'd ticket me for this. The cop said he couldn't even see it until I pointed it out to him, but no he wouldn't be pulling me over for something that he didn't even see! I got the impression for Phillips that him and his little inspector look for EVERY and ANY thing to fail you in an effort to get you to have to purchase additional services from them. Even though he failed me it still cost me $70 whether I went with his shop for the repairs or not. I had to make a choice whether to buy an entire housing unit for a hairline fracture ($85+) or find another service station that would have more integrity and re-pay the certificate fees or chance it and go back to Phillips after paying for his "recommended" repairs. I chose to find another station who used more intelligence and integrity down the street from him even though I had to pay these fees again. BE CAREFUL PEOPLE WHEN USING THIS MAN!
