I recently tried a new drink on the menu. At the counter, one of the staff members was very helpful and took time to show me how to edit my drink on the app, as I was having trouble changing it. I ordered two drinks--one iced and one hot. The app wasn't allowing me to change the drink to hot, and I clearly told the staff member that I wanted it hot. He even mentioned that he also prefers hot drinks on cold days. When the drink was prepared by another staff member, I tried it at the counter. A female staff member asked how it was, and I told her it was almost room temperature, not hot. I explained that I had asked for it hot. She responded that my order didn't say hot and mentioned that the milk would need to be heated first, but she didn't offer to remake the drink or heat it. I ended up having to take it home and microwave it myself. I found this experience disappointing and unusual, especially since I've been here many times before and my hot drinks have always been served hot. The lack of effort to fix the issue or offer a replacement didn't match the level of customer service I've come to expect from Philz. read more

After months of not having Philz Coffee I started to order my drink through the app. I will say that ordering through the app compare to going there in person to order makes a lot of difference. I am guarantee the time that my drink will be done. It does show you the barista that is making your drink on the app. Starbucks and Peet's Coffee will not tell you who is making your drink but will tell you a time frame when your drink will be done. Working in Berkeley for almost six years I been going to this Philz Coffee after work. I have seen lines in the morning with people ordering their drinks. Thankfully for the app it does make it easy to have your drink ready when you arrive there. It is hard to find a seat to sit down at since there are people occupying it for their studies. Philz Coffee *never* misses! Philz is one of the best cafès in the Bay Area, and this location is my personal favorite. The baristas/cashiers always greet you with a smile, and patiently assist you with your order. The cafè also has a very chill vibe, and you feel welcome the moment you walk in. I think the baristas seem like lovely people, but ordering on the app should be turned off if the location is too busy to handle the volume of orders. I ordered 2 drinks on the app at 9:20 and received them at 10:05. The app had me checking in at 9:50 and the harried baristas just said "oh that's coming." When I actually got the drinks, one was made iced instead of hot (even though the label says hot...) I didn't want to wait another 45 minutes so just walked off with my coffee. However when I always order my food I always have ask when is it coming out after waiting 10-15 min after the pick up time. I had asked The Husband to call the Philz Gilman location to get their time of closing for today Sunday 6/22/25, as the hours have changed drastically due to their location being short-staffed. Someone had answered and said that they were closing at 6:30PM, so we planned our day today around that. The current CLOSING hours are posted as follows: Monday thru Thursday 1:30PM Friday 5:30PM Saturday and Sunday 6:30PM We were there for a few hours, and imagine my surprise when we were informed at 4:30PM that they were closing at 4:30PM, due to "short-staffing". This closing at whatever time they felt like it is total AF bullshit. Today was not the first time it happened - it has happened a few times already. If the Gilman location can't get their shit together, they should close the location. At the very least, have REALISTIC hours posted, not "WE'RE SHORT-STAFFED SO WE'RE GONNA CLOSE EARLIER THAN THE HOURS WE POSTED" hours. This is absolutely NOT a knock on the employees, as they are doing a wonderful job. I'm just pissed that the Philz Gilman location doesn't have their shit together. I am so elated there is a Philz on this side of town in Berkeley. I get a little taste of heaven close to home, my favorite is the Mocha Teresa and seasonal is the Winter Bliss and Gratitude. Each cup ordered is made with one batch at a time, slow dripped just for your order. The wait time can fluctuate depending on the time you visit. If you have the time, wait and enjoy the cleanliness and operation of what is known as Philz. If you prefer arriving with your order ready to pickup and go, use their mobile app to order ahead. The app saves your favorite selections and preferences, it's as easy as tapping "Re-Order" and "Pay." The location is accessible from the Gilman exit or San Pablo and Gilman turn. There is street and lot parking available and the lot is pretty spacious. It is across from Whole Foods on the opposite side of the street. It can be fairly easy to miss as it is tucked off the street, the Philz sign is big and brilliantly lit so look for that just in case. There are three specific locations I frequent in different cities but this one is my "on the way to work" or "on my way home" from work go it. It's easy mobile ordering and pick up and go. Attached Parking is limited but there is street parking that's not difficult to find. Depending on the time and day it could get pretty busy here that I do recommend ordering online via the app. I do like that they have an app where you can order your drink because all you have to do is pick your drink, what time are you picking up, show up and just wait for the drink. They have iced coffees, dark/medium/light blends of coffee, tea, food such as bagels, and they have their own beans that you can buy and make coffee at home. Taste: I've been to Philz Coffee before, but not at this location so I basically have a go to drink, which is a Mint Mojito. However, I replaced the sugar with Stevia (a tad bit bitter than sweet if you're into it which I wasn't so that's why it's 4 stars. If you're into sweet iced coffee drinks, I recommend this but with sugar! Pricing: pretty standard for a franchise coffee shop in my opinion. Parking: this is the first time I've ever seen some part of Berkeley having some sort of free parking.
