The coffee here is delicious. I love that the drinks aren't too sugary and the flavors really let the coffee flavor come through. If you're not a coffee drinker, they do have teas and hot chocolate. They don't charge extra for milk substitutions. I wouldn't compare it to a Starbucks or Dunkin. Their coffees are a lot more flavorful and better quality. Also, you won't find drinks like frappes or white chocolate mocha with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. It is straight up a coffeehouse. They're food selection isn't great. An avocado toast can run up to $6, if I remember correctly. So I couldn't recommend it as a breakfast place. The space is roomy and there is a lot of seating, though the space is usually packed with people. Baristas are super nice and helpful if you're not sure what to order. If you're a first timer, I'd definitely recommend the iced rose coffee with oat milk. There is no parking lot. read more

I LOVE Philz!! I am a coffee fanatic, and Philz is excellent. I've tried many of the blends: Jacob's Wonderbar, Tesora, Philharmonic, Philtered Soul, and Dancing Water. What I love is that each of these blends is different - at other coffee shops, I often can't tell the difference between their roasts, but each of the blends at Philz is unique. Their specialty drinks are also great. My favorite is probably the Gingersnap. It's very good without being too sweet. My two favorite blends are the Philtered Soul and the Philharmonic. The Philtered Soul is very flavorful - strong hazelnut flavor. You need to be in the mood for it, but it's quite good. I get the Philharmonic if I want something more subtle. Both (as well as all the other blends) are very smooth. I also love how they don't charge extra for non-dairy milks here. I get the oat milk, and it's very creamy. Pretty sure it's Oatly. There's not a ton of seating in here, but I can usually find a place to sit. Lots of students come here to work, but if I'm with 1-2 other people, we're usually able to sit together still. The staff is super friendly. They're always willing to answer any questions about coffee blends, etc. Coffee takes at least 5 mins to come out, but if you're in a rush, you can also order ahead on their app. My favorite thing about Philz (besides the coffee haha) is that you can bring your own reusable cup (any size). They fill it up to the top and then only charge you for a small! A great way to help save the environment! read more

I recently relocated from the Bay Area to Chicago and was excited that there was a Philz to remind me of home! I've been going to Philz since the first location in the Mission opened in SF and have remained an avid Philz customer ever since (before relocating my husband and I would go to Philz 3-4 times a week at the Redwood City location). We were ecstatic (Philz pun intended) to finally get a chance to visit! Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed after tonight's visit! I was used to the fast paced, warm cheerful greeting upon entering the cafe and ordering an exceptionally delicious coffee drink but it was everything BUT. My husband, sister and I walked in and weren't greeted while waiting in line or once we were called up. Surprising given the usual cheery and customer service focused nature of the brand, but people have off days so we could understand. We all ordered our usual favorites, Iced Ecstatic for me, Dancing Water for my husband and an Iced Tesora for my sister. The barista took much longer than usual even though it wasn't busy, but we patiently waited understanding that it's a new store and they're all probably still learning. Then the coffee came... The coffee beans for all three drinks were hella burnt. All three drinks not only tasted absolutely nothing like any Philz we had ever had, but were simply awful. My husband's Dancing Water was not only burnt but also tasted heavily watered down. We all threw our coffees out walking down the street, absolutely unthinkable when it comes to Philz. My Ecstatic was so burnt that I couldn't shake the taste, despite drinking water and juice, and I had to throw up as soon as I got home. This has NEVER EVER happened to me with coffee. Also of note was that when serving up the coffee the usual ask to take a taste and let the barista know how it was wasn't made. After so many years of Philz visits we instinctively skip this step (never had a bad one before), but this is one of the things that makes the brand stand out in the Bay so should be done here as well. The cashier was also standing at the register looking at his phone and took 10 seconds or so to realize we were standing there. If the baristas were already trained to do so, then a reminder should be given and maybe some training revisited. We want nothing more than Philz to succeed in Chicago, both for a wonderful reminder of home and to introduce Chicagoans to this great brand that really stands out from other coffee shops. It's truly a unique Bay gem. But if this is going to happen then the core Philz experience, atmosphere, values and quality need to shine as brightly as they do in the Bay. We hope that with more experience and improved training things will improve! read more

The lady who took my order was really nice, however the team works is really slow although there was barely any line. Although the lady took my order wrong, she gave me the "mistake" so I could try both, which is nice of her. I ordered Philharmonic with a dash of cream, no sugar because there was a hint of maple in it, turned out pretty bland and bitter for my taste. So disappointed! I had a turkey sandwich that I expected to be good. It cost 6.75. It turned out to be soggy, with wilted, dark lettuce, onion, tomatoes and wet American cheese. It needed more taste, so I asked if they could give me a little mayo or mustard. They didn't have any. They kindly suggested that I go ask at Boston Market for some. I'm guessing I am too low brow for this place. I also can't afford a 3.60 cup of coffee. Last weekend, I finally went into this new Philz Coffee location in Hyde Park. I'm a former barista (5 years strong!) so I have developed some standards around customer service and coffee quality. I have to say that Philz is excelling at both. The ordering process was new to me, but the barista behind the counter (Soso) was incredibly helpful and patient with me. After I took forever to order and ordered something I didn't like (ugh!), Soso kindly made me their favorite drink. Of course, it was delicious! I was headed to the other coffee spot 2 blocks away when I decided to give this place a try. I'd passed by and often said to myself one day I will try that place. When I walked in, it was nice and bright inside. The coffee aroma hits you as soon as you open the door. I was instantly excited!! After reading the menu, it was time to order. Not sure of what to get, I asked the cashier (woman a little older) her choice of Ambrosia Coffee of God or Greater Alarm? She said Dancing Water and I agreed. It was the best ever!! I would give it 5 stars due to plenty of good experiences in the past - great, friendly customer service, good food and decent coffee options. But during COVID? If you want to sit in their outdoor seating area and get some work done on your laptop, heads up -- they don't let paying customers use wifi. Yup. I bought a $5 cup of weak coffee to sit in their patio area and work. My hotspot started acting up, so I asked them for wifi. They told me, "sorry, we're not offering that right now." I'm a huge fan! Having lived in Northern CA when the first Philz opened. So it hurts me to write a review that is not shining 5 star. I hope they will take it as constructive. I've visited twice the Hyde Park store. Twice I've had the mojito mocha and it was just okay. First time not sweet enough and this next time to sweet. I've not had this problem at other locations. I've been to the NorCal locations and the ones up north Chicago. Then my friend ordered a hot drink and they had to remake it because they made it iced. Then the second time she got it luke warm. My husbands also hot coffee was luke warm. We ordered 3 pds of coffee to take home and he did not notice that the women over charged him for 2 mojitos instead of one. He may have had this all corrected while we were there but there was no where to sit so we left right way. Staff needs extra training. read more

Quality of coffee is great however the time to get the coffee is very slow. The app only allows you to pay via Apple Pay. I placed an order and I didn't have Apple Pay however it appeared to have accepted my order as it gave me a time to pick it up so I thought I could pay at the store. I get there and the lady said my order didn't go through. They definitely don't have enough staff because it took literally 25-30 minutes to get my coffee which is the longest I've ever waited for coffee in 20 years of drinking coffee. Very terrible experience. Customer service was nice but please do better with the staffing. I do understand businesses have to adjust to the whole Pandemic but hire more people! read more

This place was a great addition to downtown Hyde park. If you are a true coffee lover you'll love it here. They make each cup to order from scratch so every cup is super fresh. It's not like most shops where they just have coffee sitting in pots and machines just waiting to dispense. So with that, you can expect a wait when you go because they have to hand make the orders. It had a very cool vibe and nice sitting areas if you want to stay and socialize or work on your laptop.
