Pho place among a cluster of businesses on Hastings by Warwick (E of Holdom). Parking is plentiful on Hastings, as well as the side streets. Place looks pretty cheery with the crimson walls. Bit of a cluttered feel though. Staff are friendly. No complaints. I had the pho dac biet (house special pho). To be honest it was pretty run of the mill and mediocre. Beef balls, some brisket and tendon chunks, and beef slices. The beef slices are frozen onto sheets and arranged in a pretty flower pattern. Not sure if this is a good thing, as I imagine this means the beef isn't freshly sliced. Broth was also nothing special. Honestly nothing really stuck out here. Decided to give Pho 101 a try. It's next door to Nemo Sushi Bar. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (6:00pm). No wait for a table. Soups are in the $14.95-$17.50 price range. - Herbs - bean sprouts and lemon wedges. No basil was a red flag. - Bun bo hue ($16.50) - broth was serviceable but unmemorable. Im not sure if there's new ownership or what since going a few years ago, I did ask and the new menu came out a couple months ago but the options are plentiful now. They have banh mi and multiple options, not just pork and have added veggie pho! So much better and everything was tasty and will definitely be back. read more

I ate there just today for lunch after a work-related visit to New Westminster. I heard about this place through a neighbor's daughter and drove past it a few times on my trips to the Kensington area. Typical Vancouver Pho places have a no-frills look (no fancy decor, takeout menus printed on plain paper, tables and chairs need not be fancy as long as it is functional). The place goes the extra mile into details such as the red and black colour scheme (walls, tables, seating), takeout menus printed on dark shiny paper, dark stone-tiled floors (that detail wow'ed me) and artistically shaped "rounded cubic" bowls! I ordered the grilled chicken on vermecelli noodles. The food was very good; I enjoyed my dish as my mother enjoyed her pho. Service is very friendly and efficient as well, so this place is GREAT. It closes at a relatively early hour of 8 pm; they should consider closing later on weekends. read more

There is not much competition in the area for food choices. This restaurant is located on a stretch of Hastings that is mainly residential. There are a couple schools nearby. Food quality is average. The presentation is nice. Food portion was decent. I was fully satiated sharing the food with my friend. The prices are a bit higher than most pho restaurants. The service was minimal. My glass of water was empty way before a server offered to refill. The staff had some visitors they were busy chatting away with. We were not in a hurry so we waited patiently to get their attention to pay the bill. They try to make the ambiance modern with the black and red theme, but the worn down chairs and faded food photos on the tables shows the age of the restaurant. I was looking for a quick lunch while getting my wheels mounted next door at Kal Tire. This place doesn't seem like much from the outside but the food and service were amazing! I ordered the grilled chicken pho, the flavours were light and balanced, the grilled lemongrass chicken was tender and I liked how it was served on the side. Watch out for your bill, they charge you 5% GST and 7% PST on your dinner. We order#15 large $11.75, #32 is 11.75. Total:$23.50 + 5%gst =$24.68. But they charge $26.30. They said their cash machine was broken, so they use a culculator to add up the receipt. I paid them $29. After we paid, my son said that was not right, so went back talk to the lady. She said is from the I pad she use was programed BC sale tax 12%. My son said not for food. So she said gave you back the PST 1.65. My son said forget it, just to let you know. This place needs to either lower their prices, or improve the quality of the food. I can go to any other Pho restaurant, and a dish that would cost me $8 there costs $11 or $12 here. And several times we've been dissatisfied with the quality. Two times now, my pork patty has been very dry and grainy - like it turns into a flavourless powder after 2 chews. My sister doesn't have a Yelp account, so she asked me to write in this review that the pork sub was probably the worst Vietnamese sub she's ever had. There Samantha, happy? The spring rolls, garden rolls and sugar cane shrimp are all good. And I like how you can customise your Pho (ie add additional quail eggs). Broth is generally good too. But for the higher-than-usual price, I would ask that the bean sprouts & basil be fresh and crisp instead of warm and flaccid. Overall not a BAD place, just really forgettable when there are so many cheaper, fresher options. P.S. if I were the owner, I'd change the name. The 101 in "Pho 101" implies that this restaurant sets the bar for traditional Vietnamese food. You are pretty much asking for people to be overly critical of your food. read more

One of the very few Vietnamese places in Burnaby and since they have little competition their food is sub-par compared to anywhere in Vancouver. The pho bo isn't very good, the flavors in the broth are off and the soup base is so clouded (which is bad), it's supposed to be clear!!! Maybe they use pho mix and not simmer the bones and beef. Spring rolls are meh, there is so little meat! Also not served with all the veggies to wrap and the fish sauce is bland. Not authentic at all. Other dishes are equally as bad, this place caters for the younger crowd from the surrounding schools since it's accessible, but in terms of good Vietnamese food this is NOT the place to go. Never again. We used to eat at this restaurant regularly. Although I was always a bit bothered by the fact the restaurant wasn't particularly clean, it was conveniently located and the food was decent. Our last order, however, was troubling. We got home with our order and the lettuce was black around the edges. It was clearly old and rotten. We called to complain thinking they would say "sorry, bring it in so we can see it." Obviously we misjudged their interest in customer service and food quality because after consulting with the cook - and not even seeing our food - the waitress advised us that we were wrong and that the kitchen said our food was "fine"...that it will wilt from the heat of the meat placed on top. I tried to explain that the black lettuce was not near the hot food and it was perfectly crisp except for the black, rotten edges. Food science is a hobby of mine so I think I can tell the difference between hot, wilted lettuce and old, rotten lettuce (actually I think pretty much anyone could tell the difference). I explained that I would be happy to bring it in for them to see. Once again, without asking us to bring it back or even look at the food, she told us that the kitchen said our food was "fine". So "fine" clearly means "we don't care." So clearly I will be taking my money elsewhere. There are plenty of Pho shops with better food and cleaner facility in the neighborhood. read more

I can't say that I've ever had a bad meal here. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly, fast and the food's always arrived at our table piping hot. We also do take out from here and we've always received cutlery and extra sauces. Items I order on a regular basis include: Banh Mi Thit sandwich (Vietnamese ham, Vietnamese bacon and pate); Pho Dac Biet (house special pho, with all the fixings!); Bun Dac Biet (vermicelli with grilled pork, spring roll, pork patty and sugarcane shrimp); minced pork and shrimp spring rolls. Broth can be a little bland but that's the whole point for the sauce that they give you. Otherwise, pho is very delicious and filling and the spring rolls are bigger and crispier than most pho places. It's honestly not as bad as the reviews say. I don't know if the other people here were having a bad day or the restaurant was just having an off day, the food is fine. One thing to complain about is that it is little pricier than other pho places so that's a little bit of a letdown. The food is good and service is too but one time I ordered vermicelli noodles (the dry ones) and there's greens in there too right? I found a worm in there! I told them about it and even showed them. The waitress showed it to the chef inside, and the chef just made a bunch of bullshit and excuses up about the worm, which I had no clue what he was saying cause he had a very heavy accent and that some words that I heard didn't really seem like it was related to the problem. In the end never got a sorry from any of them. Super friendly staff, reasonably priced (spring/salad rolls could be cheaper), and really good pho. I'm a big fan of their house special pho, and you can get the steak on the side so it doesn't get overcooked. The sides are all really fresh and you get a lot of sprouts, lime, and basil. No chili oil on the table (just Sriracha), although you might be able to order the soup spicy (I haven't tried). The meat is all good quality, without the funkiness in the fatty flank that you sometimes get in Pho places. Beef balls are springy and properly seasoned. The broth is probably where this place falls short in comparison to other places' pho; Le Petit Saigon and Triple Coconut Tree both have the advantage in that category. I haven't tried any of their non-pho items, but the rice dishes and spring/salad rolls all looked really good judging from other guests' plates. This is the best vietnamese food I've found in Burnaby, and if you're not gonna trek to some of of the better places in Vancouver on Hastings (e.g., Le Petit Saigon) or Kingsway, Pho 101 is a consistently very good option. If they had a combo deal with pho and a spring/salad roll then I would give five stars (hint, hint). read more

Have never eaten in the restaurant. We have ordered take out 5 times. I'm a fan of their pho beef broth. I eat a lot of pho and appreciate their quality on that. We've had their chicken pho, beef pho, vermicelli dishes, and sandwiches. Not a fan of their sandwiches. Their portions are smaller compared to others. And their prices are more expensive as well. When making a decision for takeout, they wouldn't be my first choice because of the pricing to value ratio, but I'm still a repeat customer once in awhile. read more

This is really the worst pho I have ever had. The broth did not taste fresh and the noodles had a weird taste to it. My boyfriend had a vietsub which was also lacking. The worst part was the server. It was slow that day so she might have been bored but this girl was on her cell phone the entire time. It was difficult to call her over and she ignored us half the time. When the orders came she literally dumped it on our table and walked off on her phone without another word. I would never come back and I would advise others against this place. read more
