Guessing this place has been around since the mall first opened. Everything is pretty beaten up inside. Staff are friendly, but service is slow. I imagine this also implies that the food is made fresh. Looks like a true mom and pop place. The pho here is pretty solid. Looks like Northern style here. Nice juicy chunks of meat. Soup is medium in terms of heaviness. Bowls are a bit on the small side though. I also had the grilled pork Vietnamese sandwich (banh mi). Hit the spot. There is a spicy option. Looks like they also put some black pepper in there for some extra kick. Overall a pretty solid choice. The place got full on a weeknight, and it's easy to see why. Recommended. read more

This place is an authentic, hole-in-the-wall, comfort food cuisine. The entrance is located on the outside of Crystal Mall. The street parking is usually a little tricky, but the inside of the mall has plenty of spots. The restaurant has a noticeably older look on the inside, but do not be fooled by its look, as the flavors definitely make up for them. The waiter, which I assume is also the owner (since I always see her here), is quick with orders. I usually get the rare steak and tendon noodle soup, which had a nice light beef bone broth, with noodles done just right. The rare steak was consistently on the fresher side, with nice vibrant vegetables to pair. Yum! The lemongrass chicken with rice is also something I recommend you're provided generous portions of rice and chicken, with a pickled radish carrot salad. Overall this will be a staple for my Vietnamese cravings. I've definitely been a regular, and will continue to be! FYI The restaurant is cash only, and the cook usually serves the mint, jalapenos and bean sprouts along with the beef noodle soup, so ask ahead of time if you dislike any of them. read more

I was here on April 3rd (Wednesday) to have some BBH(Spicy beef noodle $9.75) and Shrimp Salad Roll ($5.99) they were so delicious. BBH was big that I shared with my sister, and we shared Salad Roll as well. BBH was piping hot and spicy! I think this might be too spicy for some people; however my sister and I loved it. Salad Rolls were fresh and tasty. Everything was good until I found hair in my noodle. Most places would give a new one, but cashier exempted Salad Roll off our bill and we didn't mind. We didn't have to eat another bowl at least. Nothing special on interior. We were seated at the front corner facing against the wall. Small space inside the restaurant, cash only, fans (no A/C) but the food is excellent. The spring rolls had really good filings inside and nice crisp skin on the outside. Lemongrass chicken was very flavorful. For the pho, they put the usually side ingredients such as sprouts and lime inside the bowl already when they served it. read more

Come to think of it, the only Vietnamese restaurant within this mall, but only accesible on the outside (Willingdon Street entrance). I came here with a friend to try out another place where we have not eaten, and noticed this place while always driving to this mall. The term 'hole-in-the-wall' is dead on accurate here, as this is what you would term this place. Cheap hallogen tube lighting, small tiny restaurant, small tables, plastic plates, and a fan that is so loud, it makes you speak louder, and did I mention that the fan has looked like it has accumulated so much dust over the years, that whoever has to clean this, I feel sorry for you as this one is going to take some work. But enough with the decor and feel, let us get to the main reason why you even go here, to fill your stomach, and you will. This place is cheap, and I mean you get full ordering whatever there is on the menu. And you may be tricked as to when you see your bowl of pho, but be warned, they give way more meat and less on the noodles here. Even the order of Vietnamese spring rolls was big, plump, and meaty! The menu has enough selection for a small place that you would be lucky to fit 15 people. If you are not in the mood for meaty plates, do not come here, as you will be shorted the noodles! This restaurant would match the rest of the mall in price range, cheap, affordable, but probably not the most comfortable in terms of decor. I haven't been here in years and decided to walk over to Crystal Mall one day with a coworker at lunch time. This restaurant is super tiny (L-shaped layout) and I think it's only run by two people. It's I ordered the vermicelli bowl with lemongrass chicken and spring roll. If you're ordering the vermicelli bowl, just be aware that they actually add the fish sauce at the bottom for you. I didn't know this at the beginning so I added fish sauce and near the end, it got really mushy from all the liquid. They made the spring roll fresh so it came piping hot and I like that they're not the skinny type of spring rolls. The chicken was flavourful and the noodles weren't mushy. This hole-in-the-wall has uncommonly delicious food, with some of the most delicious lemongrass chicken vermicelli I've ever had. You don't go to Green Bamboo for the decor or environment: there are holes in the walls that are humorously covered with rectangular bits of wallpaper, and they don't seem to believe in cleaning the floor very often. Also, the eating area is very small, with the walled-off kitchen dominating the rectangular room, creating an L-shaped layout that doesn't leave much room for big parties. But you'll forget about all that when you taste the food. Subtle flavors and lots of fresh veggies make up for the average-sized portions. The spring rolls are delectable, with good crunch and no excess oil. The fish-sauce has a hint of mint or basil - very delicious. Disclaimer: I've only ever ordered two different dishes (and only via take-out) from Green Bamboo - rare beef + beef ball pho and deep fried spring rolls - despite being a regular customer, so this review is limited by my non-adventurous Vietnamese food palate. While I'm no Vietnamese food connoisseur, I think the pho and fried spring rolls here are as authentic (and by authentic I mean salty, MGSey, and tasty) as anywhere else. Factor in the slightly lower prices (about 10%) and slightly larger servings (of springs rolls, at least) and I've no reason make anywhere else my pho go-to in the Metrotown area. read more

The pho is alright, with flavored soup, plentiful beef, fresh mint and bean sprouts, meatballs which like these I bought from T&T. But after I finished eating, I felt so thirsty, maybe because of the MSG. I also ordered a side of spring roll, it's crunchy and filling. So easy to get full. Don't be fooled by appearances! It's tiny but the food is so good; I always get the #1 special beef noodle pho and it's just so delicious. Been coming here for about two years and I go to uni in Ontario now but I always crave pho from this place. Portions are pretty big, I am definitely full off of a small. I also get the lemongrass chicken and pork sometimes, both are super tender and yummy. It's a small store and I'm pretty sure it's just the owner and another employee but she works super hard and the food is always amazing! Just like my personal life lately, I was in the mood for gambling. LIttle did I know the odds were stacked against me or like they say in Vegas in the houses favour. You're supposed to know when to walk away or fold em and I didn't and lost big time. Green Bamboo is a shoddy hole in the wall devoid of personality. The first thing you notice walking in is the ceiling fan with wisps of cobweb hanging from it; probably hasn't been on since last summer. A small lone Canadian flag sticks out of a hole in the wall where a nail once was and as for the awkward configuration of the tables and chairs, where do I begin. Dirty ceiling, floors that haven't been swept in at least 3 days should that have been a hint? Well guess what I missed it or choose to ignore it. Sometimes after working all day a girl just wants a bánh mì and there are certain expectations that go along with that like hopefully french baguettes, pate in some form, cilantro, jalapeno; you know the usual. What I got in return was something I wouldn't give to Vancouver's homeless. Cheap, moist bun missing the crunch factor...not even heated; don't think they have a convection oven. No 3 varieties of assorted meat, despite this was called a special Vietnamese sandwich. Instead this was thinly sliced indistinguishable mock chicken loaf. A mishmash of extremely soft pickled veggies; I might have seen a stem from cilantro, no greens just the stem. Mayo, what's that? With 4 loonies missing in my wallet due to this catastrophe I thought fuck it and took one bite; quickly spitting it out seconds later and disposing of it in the nearest trash can on Kingsway. I turned around and seen a stray dog sniffing around and thought that could be my good deed for the day and chased him off quickly. My 2nd good deed is to warn you to stay far far away! read more

Tiny hole-in-the-wall but omg their Hue style soup noodle soup (#14 I think?) is the best I've had. If you like spicy food you can't go wrong with it. It's not super spicy to cause pain; it just hits the spot. The restaurant is tiny but I notice a lot of customers coming in and out for take-outs. For Pho, this is definitely as good as I've ever had it. The broth is not too oily or salty and the seasoning is just perfect. The way they cut the rare beef makes it so tender that it almost melts in your mouth... Not tough and chewy like pho hoa. The springrolls are mammoth too, and delicious, as are the fresh salad rolls (which they give you a ton of the yummy peanut sauce for). It's cheap too, about $7 per entree. I'm impressed. Definitely value for the money. I ordered a Vermicelli dish which came with 4 huge pieces of spring rolls, lemongrass pork, minced meat patty, and fish slices. The spring rolls were one of the largest ones I've ever had. The exterior was super crunchy and the interior was packed with meat. The vermicelli was in a delicious sweet, vinegary soup base. The lemongrass pork was very fragrant from the lemongrass. The minced meat patty was very flavourful and moist as well. Went here on whim, after not being able to find a different Pho noodle restaurant nearby. We were the only ones in here at around 2:00 on a Friday. Its a total hole in the wall, but I find these places have some of the best and cheapest food around. This place, not so much. Asked for two waters and two teas, only received one water one tea, which the server never refilled. I order the beef noodle soup. It was okay, nothing special at all. My girlfriend had the pork vermicelli, it was not too bad. Ive had better here in Langley for cheaper. I probably wouldn't come back. Just doesn't compare to some other Vietnamese and Noddle restaurants in Vancouver. read more

This place sucks! I came here on a Sunday about 3pm, there was no one in there. I tell the lady I want to order take out....she just stands there and looks at me, doesn't say a word, nothing, not a peep. There's pics of the food on the wall...ok, I guess that's how I order. I order the 013 beef rice noodle in soup with well done flank and brisket in tomato sauce. After I order a party of 4 walks in, So after waiting a bit, they get their food first..Wtf? not impressed but if my food is good then I can let it go. Well, when I got home what I got was some really fatty brisket that they never bothered to trim the fat off, bland tomatoey broth and some really overdone carrots. What is this? I ordered pho and a side order of spring roll. The spring rolls were crunchy, large and filling. Not bad. The pho had me concerned however. The texture of the noodle was quite unique. It is a bit slippery and has a slightly chewy texture. It doesn't actually taste like other pho. I don't like the texture. The soup was okay... at first. After I finished eating I started getting really thirsty, I guess this means there's a lot of MSG. I don't really like MSG. I used to think that japanese restaurants run by vietnamese people was sad. I've now learned that vietnamese restaurants run by taiwanese are even worse. The lack of cleanliness and decor has been mentioned in other reviews. But I couldn't help admiring the highly functional, yet unorthodox method of lighting, by the half suspended fluorescent fixture turned towards the eating area. Then immediately behind it was a massive hood vent with a collection of dingy pipes. Partway through my newly developing thesis of western and asian approaches to food and presentation, with the complex interplay of emphasis on decor vs. taste, my house special noodle and house special sandwich arrived. The house sandwich was pathetic, filled with cucumbers and a whole bunch of other forgettable. The only reason why I finished it was because the noodles were worse. At the aforementioned ethnic cuisine cooked by another ethnic group, turns out the house special noodle was simply taiwanese beef noodle. Or some sorry attempt at it. To recap the highlights: fatty, greasy beef pieces, baby bok choy thrown in for good measure, greasy cloudy soup that coated the thicky chewy noodles on the way up. Needless to say, I didn't finish the noodles. The only good thing I can say about this place was that the owner was kind enough to point out the meter maid that was merrily ticketing the cars parked outside. I bolted out of there and parked my car in the infuriatingly bad parking lot at crystal mall and returned to my cold, greasy noodles. Visiting for the first time my friend wanted Pho. We walked in it's very small, the wait wasn't bad. So there appears to be one person working for about 10 small tables she was moving so freaking fast you couldn't ask her anything the min you asked and looked down you look up she was gone. I believe she was the host, waitress, cook, bust girl, janitor, heck you name it that was her. Being out first time here we had a few questions about portions but they went unanswered. We didn't know if they were serving drinks (soda) because no one in the place had one at all when trying to ask she pointed at the door I turned to look and said ok turned back around she was gone she moved so fast only brought one by the time the second one was finally ordered we had to catch her the food was already out. We ordered 2 waters she only brought out one. The pho was a large amount being a small bowl and the chicken wings were seasoned just right. They would have received more stars but she was in such a rush it was annoying. People were laughing while trying to get her attention they need someone on standby. read more

When we got our food the broth was very salty could've had MSG. The noodles fell apart they were so soft and the meatballs didn't even feel or tasted like real meat. The Pho noodles are good. I also like their Tom Yom soup with noodles and vietnamese sandwich. Service is fast if you go early for lunch (eg. 11:30). Otherwise, it's packed and not much place to stand to wait for take-out. It is a hole in the wall, but sometimes I want to have lunch alone and not share a table with others at the Crystal Mall. I find this place OK for a bit of privacy to catch up on emails. There are a few 2 seat tables in the corner at the front (squishy, but sufficient). read more

The best spring rolls I've had in Vancouver. The pho is okay (not terrible but just not incredible) and the sandwiches are not the super fresh ones you'll get at places that specialize in them but the service is usually fast and good bang for your buck.
