Pho den is one of my favourite local pho spots in Burnaby. Located on Kingsway, this location is bright and beautiful with murals of Vietnam all over the walls. There is also ample parking in the back for those who need it. I ordered the fish sauce chicken wings and bun bo hue - both were tasty and cooked well. My sister enjoyed her pho as well. The portions of the soups here are one size and tend to be larger. The staff here and friendly and will come by once to give some tea and leave for you to enjoy your meal. Big hearty pieces. Flavourful and crispy. 5/5 Lemongrass pork and chicken on vermicelli. Big portion. Pork and chicken were tender and flavourful. I only came here to pick up a couple of drinks I ordered from their website: Iced Vietnamese Coffee Royal Milk Tea The Royal Milk Tea was delicious but it's the Iced Vietnamese Coffee that really stood out. We'd had some Iced Vietnamese Coffee recently from a Vietnamese Coffee shop in Bellevue, but this was better. (Not to mention cheaper. It was painful paying for our drinks in American dollars!) Been here about twice already. This used to be BBT cafe back then and now it's a Vietnamese restaurant. This restaurant was clean upon entering and the neon sign in the restaurant looked cool. Menu can be scanned by QR code. Noodle came in a big portion. Pho Sate ($13) and Bun Bo Hue ($14) were pretty good here. Pho Sate had mix of beef broth and peanut taste in the soup. Pho Dac Biet ($12.75) was pretty good; however some noodles were cooked and some were stuck together. I wasn't sure why the noodles were half cooked. I have heard a lot of good things about this Pho restaurant when it first opened. It is within walking distance from where I am. However, I probably won't go back. They increased the price and then they had to reduce the price. One of my good friends like this restaurant and every time he goes the place is empty regardless what time. He stopped going because they raised the price in around May or June this year. But when I showed up looks like the reduced their price hoping that they can get some customers in. Price isn't a factor for me. I got a rare beef and brisket pho for $12.25. They only have one size. The portion was small. The broth flavor was not that. It was quite bland. Service was meh as well. They started using a QR code system but the QR code doesn't work on newer devices. My friend got a new phone and it kept on saying that their site is not safe. The server refused to give us a menu and so instead my friend had to look at the menu on my phone. Only at the end, my friend wanted some desserts, she ran up and took a physical menu without the server noticing. I am like wtf of not wanting to give us a physical menu. We also got a salad roll to share but unfortunately they only have one kind and it was pork. Again, the flavor was not there. Quality is more like a 2.5 and at most 3 stars. Service is around 2.5 and again at most 3 stars. The restaurant is a lot cleaner and nicer and I would say it is a 4 stars. Price on the pho is pretty good but given the portion size, I would say the price is average. The Vietnamese restaurants in the area are all packed at around 8:30pm and this is the only one with no to hardly any business so that tells you something. It is very likely that this restaurant will not last past 5 years or given how long their lease is, if they don't change. When I get pho, I am all about the food and not about the decor too much. Another thing to note is that we asked for the bill and the server only handed us the credit card machine. We didn't get a bill breakdown. However, I did do the math in my head and it works out around that price. The Salad pork roll was $4, each pho was $12.25 and we got 2 and ice cream was $1 each and again we got two. My first pho in Vancouver! It's alright.. we came in kind of late night and this was still open. It's spacious and could hold a large crowd. We (group of three) dine in and there's another solo person on the other booth. Within our stay there were couple of groups to come in and out (just dine in and out) before us. The pho is pretty basic but hits the spot. I ordered the fresh spring roll but got the fried one instead (found out later we should've said salad roll instead) We didn't complain anymore as we are hungry and we just want to eat and go. The rolls are just meh.. the crispy mushrooms are lit! I never had them that big and good! Our server is very accommodating. New pho place in Burnaby! It's a ~5 minute drive from Highgate village. Plenty of parking in the parking lot, and there is residential street side parking nearby. Just a heads up if you're visiting on a Sunday afternoon since there's a big church down the street, and it can get a bit crowded during peak lunch hour. Love the aesthetics of the place. It's comfortable and not too upscale, but still has some nice décor complete with neon lights, wood accents, and bright blue booths. I really liked the booths because it gives you privacy, and it's a great way to socially distance to some extent. My order: Bun Bo Hue ($13): I liked their broth, it isn't too spicy but it's very rich in flavour. Lots of noodles too! Comes with some meat slices and 2 handmade meatballs. Deep Fried Wontons ($8.75): Tastes like a pork wonton, and it's nice and crispy. Served with a side of dipping sauce. Pork Spring Rolls ($5): Loaded with meat, and it's deep fried to a nice golden brown with a good crunch. Eat it while it's hot! Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($5): Super strong Viet iced coffee. Served in a plastic cup with ice, but I'm not sure it is available in the traditional drip style. You can't go wrong with this drink if you're a coffee lover. Looks like Estea has turned into this modern and funky looking Vietnamese place. Parking is available in the lot behind the complex, as well as the side streets. The place has a lot of funky neon style lighting. Reminds me of the likes of Anh + Chi, Gold Train, or Pho Long. Staff were friendly. Chatted with the waitress and she actually owns the place with her boyfriend who's the chef. The pho dac biet had plenty of meat. Nice large bowl. Broth was clear and light. Served with onions, green onions, and cilantro. Nice and tasty. The salad rolls were fresh and firm and dry (as in not wet). Not soggy at all which was really nice. Spring rolls are long and thin. The skins are Chinese style. The ice coffees here are made fresh. They even have a large espresso machine and grinder like a coffee shop. Pricing is very good I must say. The ginger and other herbs used, their healthier style of cooking/food preparation and their teas used are good to experience, particularly during influenza season. And we did go to the restaurant in mid-January. The temperature inside was actually perfect -- the place is spacious enough so that one can find seating away from the doorways. The music isn't bad either - pop songs that most people in the 20-50 age range can recognize. We ordered a beef brisket Pho, a vegan Pho and deep-friend pork. The latter was drained of oil perfectly, an issue with some other types of restaurants. As far as the Pho goes, the broth and ingredients were both stellar. Not too salty, which was my concern as someone fairly new to the cuisine. A lot of places don't do vegetarian broth, and this one tasted surprisingly authentic. Prices are on par with the competition, and there's lots on the stretch of Kingsway. Bowl sizes were such that my partner had food to take home. For those with larger appetites, it's about the right amount provided you make use of what they offer: the bean sprouts to have in the Pho or on the side and enjoy the broth as well as what's in there. And there's ample condiments available for those who prefer spiciness over sauce, for example, and tea refills are offered. Service was phenomenal. The server was very patient in explaining the options and preparation style, and followed up on us without being intrusive. At the end, the service brought back the entire amount of my tip saying this was the change. I came here earlier this month when they first opened at around 8pm and they told me they were sold out of everything. My 2nd attempt was better. They still had quite a lot of their menu items and I got to try their sate pho. I think the portion size was decent and they gave ample amount of beef. The broth was not too heavy - just right. Also enjoyed the spice level as well but this could be subjective to each individual. The pork salad roll was ok. Nothing to write home about. The pho came in about 10 minutes, with cabbage, carrots, some onions, deep fried tofu, and medium thickness rice noodles -- would've been nice to have some broccoli or other leafy green. The broth was nicely salty and a bit on the oily side, but with decent depth. The soup was served with the usual garnishes (bean sprouts -- they ask you if you want them blanched or raw; basil, and jalapeno) and a side of chili oil, as per my request. Anyway, for the review, thank you for the wonderful service that Pho Den has given us. Super nice and super neat. Love the ambience of the place and how great and neat how the dishes were presented. We got the vermicelli and the pho and extra of the salad roll and the vietnamese coffee. I personally think the vietnamese coffee is regular like other viet restaurant as well as the salad roll. The pho was good but the noodles were quite sticky maybe should be cooked a little bit longer but other than that it was good. The vermicelli is the star dish of the experience. Very generous portion of noodles, and the noodles were perfectly chewy, broth was hot and very authentic and tasty. I'm my opinion the best pho broth in Burnaby. For me it's all about the broth. (I'm a harsh critic btw) The menu was limited because they were sold out of a lot of things. Lucky I asked because otherwise I thought it was their complete menu. They are still working out some kinks, when the owner explained some things to me I understood. Vegetable spring was ok but reasonable for $4.00 for 4 pieces. Don't usually leave reviews but decided to chime in after reading a few of the other ones. Ordered the Bun Bo Hue (BBH on the menu). Authentic soup base with way less MSG than others. I am sensitive to MSG and will usually end up asking for glasses of water if they use too much. I did not have any MSG problems at this restaurant at all. Most of the other BBH I've had had been westernized and this one reminded me of my trips back to Asia. The area is spacious as others have mentioned and I liked how they tried to update the menu in real time when they ran out of certain items. My only suggestion is instead of taking it off the menu, maybe have it marked as sold out so others won't misinterpret it as a small menu. I was there on opening day and they had the full menu. It was easy to discern when you have A1, A2, then a jump to like A16. I can understand the confusion and it was only easy for me to know because I saw the full menu before. When I came back the other day for dinner, it was packed and I saw the menu was quite different from opening day so I asked and they explained it and I totally understand. Had a nice chat with the friendly staff and was notified that they had prepared a lot of food from the stats of their soft opening and had prepared more for the Grand Opening, but didn't think they would be so overwhelmed that they could run out of food. The pros with this: they can manage minimal waste of food which is good for the environment and also good for us that we'll always be guaranteed fresh ingredients. The cons would be that they had to turn down quite a few customers. I think over time, they will be able to figure out how much they'll need to prepare and manage it much better. As for the menu, it was a neat idea to use a QR code and to be able to order online and pay but as I mentioned earlier, taking items off the menu made it look like they didn't have many items to choose from so maybe marking it as sold out would be better. The noodles are thicker than the usual ones you see at the other Pho restaurants and it's refreshing! Much better texture and like the traditional noodles of the northern side that I had. Best thing about it is that, when you get to the end of the bowl, they'll still be chewy! Price is great for the amount. I am a big eater and found it satisfying and left just enough room for me to have the spring rolls as appetizer, which were crispy on the outside and packed on the inside. Most other places with the thin noodles end up soaking so much soup that I feel like I end up with a bowl of noodles and no meat. I will mention that after about half an hour after eating, I felt much fuller than before. Probably because the thicker noodles take a bit longer to expand. My parents had the vermicelli and rice dishes. The dish is big which made the portion look a bit smaller, but by the end, they could barely finish it. Don't let the dish fool you. The meat portion is almost on a 1:1 basis with the rice/noodles so you don't end up with a bowl of vermicelli/rice without meat. Grilled chicken is juicier than other places, and the lemongrass permeates the entire table as soon as it's placed down. As for takeout, I asked the owner if they plan on doing it and they are but the system was still being fine tuned so it won't be until later. I'll be ordering take out from here more once they get it working, since I know the noodles will still be good by the time I get it back to the office. Overall, food is authentic and traditional. Close to what I'd have back in Asia, low MSG in the broth and they take a long time to make it properly flavourful without dumping a bunch of MSG in. Noodles have great texture. Price is just right for the portion. Staff service is great and they take time from their hectic schedule to explain things, and seating is nice. They just have a few kinks to work out in their system to make it less confusing but that's more an IT thing and has nothing to do about the food. read more
