This Pho place is definitely not one of the better Pho restaurants I've been to. Rather it is like a comfortable pair of slippers that you continually slip into, knowing that it is time to get a new pair. I'll be honest, this is a pretty convenient location, which is why I've been here more than a few times. I've given up ordering any type of meat in the pho-- every time I have, it has been fatty and/or rubbery. The last time I was there, I thought 'maybe this time will be different' and ordered chicken... no change. I picked it all out of the soup. Silver Spring and Eden Center both have much better pho (and Vietnamese food in general), but like other reviewers, I come here when I am lazy and don't want to make the trek to the suburbs. read more

I came here with a friend because we had been to the same chain in Addams Morgan and really liked the place. When we got here it was empty and no one was really that busy. We were seated shortly and given water and menus. After a short wait I ordered the Pho noodle soup with the fuji apple broth. I have never been to a Pho place that offers a veggie broth like this one. I really appreciate it. The other places use water and it just doesn't taste good as a base for broth. I admit the other location in AdMn seems to have a tastier Pho than here but they were okay. The pho was filling and did the trick for me but I can't say it was anything special. I came here for a quick bite during lunch- I honestly had expected better lunch specials given that it's an asian hot spot but it was kind of not. So they claim to have heavily discounted pho (the hot viet noodle soup) but the waiter clarified that it was a tiny portion and would not be filling, so I went ahead and added on an curry chicken entree. It was just alright and being that the wait was quite long for a bowl of soup and a rice dish I was left a little worried! On the second day of Superstorm Sandy coming through, I was getting cabin fever. My roommate was gone. I hadn't seen a person in two days and I don't have a tv. I had to get out of the house. So I braved huge wind gusts and made my way down the street, ducking into doorways when the wind threatened to blow me over and finally ended up at Pho 14 where I almost fell on the floor in gratitude, as it was open and serving on that blustery day. I ordered pho, watched some CNN at their bar, then headed home and felt more like a human and not just a shut-in. Well, I've been there a bunch of times since. The pho is not my favorite. It seems like I have to add way too much Sriracha to the broth to give it flavor. The bahn mi is definitely not the best in the area, but then again, most of the time I don't feel like driving to Virginia to get quality Asian food. At least the ingredients here are always fresh and service is pretty quick no matter how swamped they are. Expect to see me here next time a Superstorm blows into town. read more

Worst banh mi, broth, and eggrolls I've ever had in my life. Banh mi was made with a hoagie roll of some sort. Seeing as how banh mi literally refers to the French baguette that is supposed to be part of the sandwich, I think it's safe to say that they don't even serve banh mi. The broth had some strange tangy sweet flavor to it; I couldn't handle more than a sip of that. Eggrolls were mushy inside like they'd been through a dozen freeze-thaw-fry cycles. Also, menu on the website says prices vary by location. This location is a little more expensive than the menu online. So they're batting 0.000 on price and quality. read more

Best Vietnamese in DC so far. I have not found a place that is this good. I must say that I have not had the Pho yet, however, the rice vermicelli with beef and chicken is fantastic. The meat is absolutely marinated and seasoned perfectly and the spice is great. They have a nice menu full of all the Viet choices. I will be back shortly for the Pho. The staff was very friendly and very quick. The decor is modern and clean, and was impressed. With the ease from Columbia Heights Metro to here, no question this place is a winner. read more

Meh. I might even give this a 2.5. Suffice it to say, I was one of very few Asian customers in the restaurant besides the staff. I had the veggie pho, which was more like a veggie noodle soup. I know it's not beef based, but it didn't even have the spices that pho is flavored with. Le's in Boston does a better one. My bf had the tofu/veggie/curry stirfry, which was subpar at best. the rice noodles were simply boiled and placed on top. Not even stir fried in! We also had the tofu spring rolls. Average I suppose. Otherwise, the bean sprouts and basil were fresh and the wait staff was extremely nice. They brought a shrimp stir fry instead of tofu and were extremely apologetic and gave us a discount on the tab. This place is not pho-reals--- super slow service, cheap cuts of fatty flank and brisket. (Nothing is more nauseating than chewing viscous fat in your mouth.) We were lucky to get a table before the huge dinner crowd came. It was only 5:30 and the restaurant was suddenly inundated with customers and the only two servers working couldn't accommodate such a high demand. Please staff more personnel so that we don't have to wait for 20 minutes for our menu, followed by our meal. But don't get me wrong, the broth was perfect. I would come back again on a slower, rainy day when no one is here. Maybe it's even better to just get take-out since I saw a lot of people do that; it would reduce the time of waiting, and you'll get to eat your pho in peace at home. read more

The Pho I got was pretty good, definitely above average for Vietnamese restaurants. However, I would say that compared to what I've had at home or in Vietnam, the soup had too much cinnamon and not enough of other spices. It needs to be a little bit stronger but toned down on the cinnamon. The broth was light and clear, though, which makes it a very good broth. I also had the lotus stem salad. Everything tasted fresh and bright. The vegetables were crunchy and the thai basil was in amazing condition and rough-cut, which reminds me of what I've had at home. However, the pork slices were really overcooked and dry, which made it less than stellar for me. The fish sauce that I accompanied it was a little too sweet for me, and the texture of the fish sauce was a little too syrupy, but overall it was still a good fish sauce considering what I've got from most other Vietnamese restaurants. The Vietnamese coffee was among the best I've had. I had the iced version, and I definitely recommend it. The ice was crushed, though, which I didn't like since it melted too quickly and the coffee got diluted very quickly. It's usually served with large cubes of ice. It's a little pricey at $3.50, but I would definitely recommend it. The worst thing there were the fresh spring rolls, or what some would call summer rolls. I was excited since the ingredients listed sounded like what a Vietnamese spring roll should be like, but it turned out to be a little subpar for me. As a Chapel Hill student, I can ever get better rolls at the local pho place, and that place is nowhere near as good as this, so this was disappointing. They used thick wrappers, which I don't really like, but that's a personal preference. The most important part should be the dipping sauce, but it was too watery and underseasoned. I usually prefer chopped peanuts in my sauce, but they didn't have it, so there was no extra texture. I would not waste money on this if I was you. Overall, this cannot compete with Eden Center, but I would suggest you come here if you were visiting DC and was confined to the metro/bus system. read more

I went to Pho 14 for lunch. I've been eying this place since it opened but I never had a chance to go there until recently. I ordered the spring rolls, #22 (steak, flank, brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs), and a thai iced tea. Spring rolls - not bad. Nothing exciting. I've had amazing spring rolls before, unfortunately, these weren't it. I feel like it was missing something. Maybe not enough garlic or basil? I don't recall if there was any mint either. I also found a piece of a shrimp shell in mine. I guess I'd rather find that then hair or a bug. #22 Pho - broth was really good and it didn't feel heavy. I think there was a tad too much star anise but it didn't ruin the dish. It definitely made its presence known though. For $8.95 (regular bowl), I thought it was over priced. I'm from CA, so I usually pay $7 tops for a good hearty (larger) bowl of pho. Although, when my aunt comes to visit, I get an awesome, lean, delicious pot of pho for free! I would have thought this pho was worth it if it was $5 or $6 bucks. Also, the menu said it came with meatballS. I only got one meatball cut in half. Thai iced tea - I think it was too sweet and the color was a darker shade of orange from what I'm used to. I still drank it. Once most of the ice melted, it didn't taste so bad...probably because it watered down the drink to make it taste like a normal thai iced tea. Overall, I'm glad I tried Pho 14. This place is really more of a 3.5. I'm a big fan of fractions. Pros: Everything I've had on the menu has been delicious. The Pho is great, though no where near as good as Pho Viet. The bahn mi is excellent (just avoid the fish one, I'm not sure what they were thinking with that). The vermicelli dishes are pretty decent, though I've had better. The place itself is nice and the servers are very friendly. Cons: There's usually a wait and when there isn't, it's uncomfortably crowded. This might change, as it looks like they're expanding. But as it is, there's no where to wait so you either stand there awkwardly or you leave. In the end, good, but not as good as Pho Viet. read more

Pho 14 is a little restaurant that has garnered some big awards. I guess Forbes magazine recently named it one of the top cheap eats in the nation. Good for them. Awards only serve to heighten my expectations and usually lead to masses overcrowding such places. But, Pho 14 hasn't let it go to their head. They do get the crushing crowds (hint: reservations on weekends, go on weekday), but what a deal. The pho is northern style and very solid. I had the ban mi (sandwich), terrific fried pork sandwich served with soup and egg rolls. Everything was excellent. Comfortable dining room, terrific service, nice, full menu. What sets Pho 14 apart are the exceptionally fresh vegetables. Beautiful garnishes, crisp, cool bean sprouts. That's flavor, folks. So, that gets them four stars. Fifth star came with the bill. We walked out of Pho 14 with full stomachs and a $20 tab. I'm not a big fan of Vietnamese food. But for what it is, Pho 14 is quite impressive. read more

Vietnamese is one of my least favorite cuisines and the only Asian cuisine I can do without. That's why I didn't bother trying Pho 14 until my cousin invited me to meet her there for dinner on a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised by the spring rolls--I loved the soft wrapping, shrimp and noodle fillings, and the dipping sauce. I really wasn't in the mood for pho so I tried the banh mi with pork. The pork was delicious, but I felt like the sandwich could have used more meat, veggies, and sauce. I've definitely found better banh mi in Annandale and New York. The sandwich was pretty tiny, but, to make up for it, it's served with an appetizer. My beef skewers were really good. The bahn mi was good, but not the best I've ever had. Lots of veggie options here!! They have a vegetarian pho with yummy vegetable-based broth. Very comforting dish. They also have vegetarian banh mi, summer rolls, vermicelli and also a noodle soup dish with seitan/soy protein faux meat. Basically for every section of the menu, there is a vegetarian dish equivalent. This place is perfect for omnis + vegetarians/vegans to dine together. There is something for everyone! I love the summer rolls ! Usually very soft, fresh and chewy. Decent price for Pho in DC (of course it will be cheaper if you go out to Virginia). The service is fast and good. I've been here several times in the different locations in DC. Just a nice go-to place for good, affordable food whenever I feel like having Vietnamese food and don't want to travel to VA. read more

It's hard to find good pho in DC and this place is my go to when I'm too lazy to trek to Eden Center. Located in Columbia Heights. Street parking or the Target garage. Service is decent but the pho takes forever to come out...which is strange because it should be fairly fast to prep. We always get the summers rolls to start because why not and they are very average. No herbs in the rolls and the sauce is bad but edible. Pho comes in a small or large. Small is really small so get the large bowl. Rare beef is tender and fresh. Broth is slightly more oily than your typical pho but still good. Salad garnish (bean sprouts and basil) plate is tiny so you'll need another plate if you're sharing with another or enjoy a good amount of salad in your pho like myself. No sharing for me. read more

Had dinner at Pho 14 last night after rave reviews by my best friend. We shared an appetizer of goi cuon (vegetarian spring rolls in rice paper) to start with. The dish is served with a delicious peanut hoisin sauce that I loved lapping up. What really was fantastic though was the pho chay (number 19 on the menu) that she could not stop gushing over. The broth was spot on and was perfect to take in on a cold night. I had a bit of a challenge eating the soup/noodles with the chopsticks and the round serving spoon that they give, but despite the mess, I really enjoyed it. They provide a small plate of basil, jalapenos, bean sprouts and lemon slices that you can add into the soup to give it more texture and more kick, but it's a judgment call you make based on your taste buds. I also added some chili sauce and some sweet sauce to my soup and loved the additional seasoning they added. Service was great and atmosphere was simple and inviting. Pho 14 is a good pocket friendly place to get some flavorful Vietnamese food! read more

Been here twice, their chicken broth pho is the best I've had it in the United States, and I've had pho in Boston, NYC, San Francisco, and Philly. It's just the right amount of flavoring and heavy. I got it with the brisket, tofu, and broccoli the last time. The food here is excellent and affordable for a nice night out. They don't have any alcohol, but my Thai iced tea was great. The service was a little slow though but it was Sunday evening so I'll give them a pass. I'll definitely go back for phone, its my go to for Phone in the DMV area. read more

for many of the same reasons as other reviewers, I rate this restaurant a 4. Only 2 complaints: would like more space, since it crowds quickly. But the wait is normally not longer than 15 minutes. I only like the pho; other dish I tried was just ok. I've eaten here a few times. The Pho #5 and #7 are great. Tried the crispy fried egg noodles with shrimp/beef/pork/vegs. The pork in that dish was probably the worst cut of pork I've been served in a restaurant (think fatty pig ear or cartilage), and the dish itself was nothing too special because it tasted like stir fry chinese noodles or japanese style. I thought it would taste more Vietnamese, with more cilantro, sauces, peanuts, etc. No alcohol is served here. I really like all the servers; they are attentive and nice, and smile!! They aren't going completely out of their way, as it is a pretty quick place, so you they won't be waiting on you hand and foot like they would at Ruth Chris's Steak House for example. Fantastic soup, choice of appetizer (recommend the chicken skewers that comes with a small side salad), and a full sandwich for $10! I couldn't even finish it all. I've gotten takeout from this restaurant multiple times and it is the best veggie pho I've had. The vegan broth is really flavorful. I get the fried tofu which is cut in a really pleasing way-- it's easier to get a little tofu in each bite than it is at other restaurants where the tofu is served in big cubes. The tofu comes separate from the broth so it doesn't get soggy en route. The mushrooms are also a delicious topping. The Good: I would argue that Pho 14 is one of the consistently best pho restaurants in the DC area. Fresh ingredients, not too salty, and good prices. I am a loyal customer of the *Adams Morgan* location of Pho 14, going nearly once a week. However, this location was incredibly disappointing... The Bad: we originally came to this location on a Friday evening around 7:20pm under the assumption they were running the $5 pho Friday deal that was advertised on their website. It took about 15 minutes for a server to come to our table to take our order. Slow, but understandable for a Friday night rush. After we got our order in however we waited FIFTY minutes with no contact at all whatsoever regarding our food. No check in on if we wanted more water/drinks, not to update us on the wait, nothing. We finally asked if our order had been put it. It had not. We watched as our server finally put the order in nearly an hour after we had placed it. After eating it took as nearly another 20 minutes to flag down an different employee for the check. Our original server never came back to apologize, or even pick up our bill. It had to be dropped off by another server entirely. We noticed the price was nearly double what we expected ($10 instead of $5 Friday deal) and inquired. The server said that they were no longer running that deal. We stated it was still listed on their website and asked if they would honor it. The employee told us there was nothing she could do to have it removed from the website and they would not reduce the price. We then explained our subpar experience and she said aside from giving us 25% off she couldn't do anything further. Safe to say the extremely disappointing service and deceptive advertising will ensure we don't ever return to this location. A real shame since we love their pho. read more

Where do I begin? Do I begin with standing at the doorway in a restaurant with 3 tables occupied at 5:30pm waiting for someone to recognized I've walked in? Do I start with the fact I had to flag the waiter down each time I needed a napkin because the waiters and bartenders are too busy on their phones or rolling napkins with chop sticks and spoons? Do I start with how the other 3 tables and to call out the waiter for water, the check, and to order more food? (Yes, I was not the only one.) So the food: The $1.49 happy hour summer rolls were great! Lots of shrimp and pork and basil and noodles. The peanut sauce? The peanut sauce is WATER. It also has a bitter vinegar taste to it. But the rolls, the summer rolls were excellent! Ordered the Bun Bo Hue, heat level, HOT. I consider myself an expect on BBH. I've roamed the halls of Eden Center and have had BBH at MANY places. Skip this place. Skip the Bun Bo Hue at Pho 14. The beef was scant. The beef had so much fat, grissel, and wasn't tender. The cured pork was not good. It was cut length wise (never saw that) and was packed with black peppercorns. Never saw that. The BBH lacked any depth of spice, lemongrass, or fish sauce. It was not good. I've only tried Pho No. 5 with slices of beef, although they suppose to put four types of meat in the boal it's hard to distinguish amongst them. Overall the meal was great but I might be mislead by the spiciness of it, those slices of jalapenos ar a killer! Would like a bit more flavourful meat in my boal. The price - value ratio is excellent. Will come back to try other meals there. Service was swift. No beer. Large boal is only for very hungry men, will go for a regular one the next time. read more

Much more spacious than it looks from the outside. Plenty of seating even on a busy night!When craving Pho, Pho 14 definitely hits the spot. I like that they give you the option to choose your size, broth flavor (chicken, beef and vegetarian) then up to 4 ingredients (or more for additional cost). They had great vegetarian friendly options! Their mushrooms and fried tofu are delish! The beef broth was tasty and flavorful. The only downfall is that the bowls are SUPER small. BUT you can get Pho in a tinier cup size if you just want a side and not an entire bowl which is nice. The shrimp summer rolls are standard, but good. The spring rolls are delish. You have the option to order any of the rolls in either a pair, or in singles. I'm a pair girl (I like to eat) but I can see singles coming in handy for some people! Service is usually good. But can take a tad long. Prices are reasonable for DC prices, a little higher than your burbs Pho spots. read more
