I ventured to DC's Columbia Heights to get some authentication Laotian food. Getting seating here on Friday or Saturday nights can be tricky. You can try to walk in. I recommend booking your table online via open table. If you encounter a long wait, I suggest placing a takeout order there. Service was fabulous given how busy they were. My favorites to order her are the naem khao, sai qua, and the muu haeng. Everything is so good here you really can't go wrong. The experience here makes me want to visit Laos or I'll just have to come back to Thip Khao to get my Laotian fix.

Stopped in with no reservation as it didn't come natural for me to make a reservation for a Thai or Lao restaurant -- spoiled Californian! The host advised me that they were fully booked for the evening and bar seating (with full service) was the only option. Cool. No problem. Ordered the papaya salad described as Tam Muk Houng ($18) on the menu: Green Papaya Salad, Unfiltered Fish Sauce, Fermented Shellfish, Chili, Tomato, Eggplant, Lime, and Garlic. As one can see in the photo, there were no eggplants and the papaya salad was very dry. I don't believe it was made to order as it was bland and tasted as if it were from a big premade batch. Definitely lacked spice and did not have the traditional Lao papaya salad flavors. I eat a lot of papaya salad so I do have a pretty high standard for comparison. This papaya salad was not it. For the entree, tried the Kai Tod ($25) listed under Special on the menu and described as Lao-Thai style Fried Half Chicken with Ginger Sauce, side pickles, and Sticky Rice. Presentation was great, the fried chicken had decent seasoning, and the ginger dipping sauce paired well with the protein -- although I will say, it was not the authentic Lao dipping sauce that I'm used to. The flavors were in general brought down several notches to appease the palate of those who are not familiar or acquainted with traditional SE Asian cooking. The food is good but Iacks authenticity. Would it be a cool option to check out when around the neighborhood? Sure. Would I be back? Likely not.

Came here for date night after hearing so much about this restaurant and it didn't disappoint! Laotian food is always a hit. We had major indecision because there's SO many things on the menu we wanted to try but ended up getting: Naem khao: 4/5 probably better with the sour pork, but loved how fresh this was. It was a large portion too, so we got kind of full from finishing it before our mains even arrived. Shrimp pad see ew: 5/5 the best pad see ew I've had in the DMV. So much wok fire flavor. You can really taste the caramelization. And the large shrimp were velveted which was made it extra satisfying to eat. Also a good shareable portion size! Muu Som: 4/5 this was super rich and heavy. Would get this again only to share with a larger group. Loved that it came with sticky rice. Mango sticky rice: 4/5 delicious but in my opinion didn't need the ice cream on top (my boyfriend thinks otherwise though). Very large portion as well. The cocktails were a little pricy ($15) for what they were but I did love the tamarind margarita. Just wish it was a larger drink or a smaller price tag. Service was very attentive!

I'm disappointed I haven't ever stopped in here before. I walk by this restaurant regularly and never thought to check it out. I actually intended to try out the Trini Vybez restaurant next door, but discovered they're closed but their signage is still up. Anyways, I got a seat at the bar for myself and service was great. I was a bit indecisive as the menu is pretty extensive, and I've never eaten Laotian food before. Luckily, it was happy hour, so I was able to sample a couple of their appetizers and their daiquiri which was quite strong. I had the Tam Sum, papaya salad and that was very good with a hint of spice and lime. Then, I also had Chuenh Peek Gai, which was tamarind glazed wings. Omg they were savory and crispy! I loved these. For the entree, the bartender recommended some great options, but I finally settled on Kee Mao, which is flattened rice noodles with stir fry beef and vegetables. It was also a very savory dish, with a sweetness to it. Laotian food is very similar to Thai food and I love Thai food. I will not sleep on this restaurant and will be back soon!!

Food is 10/10 honestly everything was so good but my favorites were the Kee Mao, the red coconut curry noodle soup, and the chicken wings! Service was great even with how busy they were. Everyone needs to try this place.

What a wonderful spot!! *drool* - and gluten free people, you'll have many options (which are labeled on their menu as well). However, I would be very straight forward about how you respond to cross contact - as our server mentioned that some have cross contact and some don't. I am less sensitive to cross contact. ^After that is taken care of, expect to loveeee your food! So delicious- I think I scraped each of my plates clean. Can't wait to return!

My wife and I recently went to Thip Khao for a weeknight dinner after not having gone for several years and had a good experience. We were seated immediately at our reservation time and got solid service. My wife and I shared the Tam Som salad, which was delicious but extremely spicy (even for those with a high spice tolerance)! I got the Pad Phet Paa for my main dish. While everything was well-cooked, the catfish in particular could have used more flavor. I would recommend Thip Khao for a nice date night or to celebrate a milestone!

Venue is well-decorated. Nicely lit, interesting wall art and decor fitting the restaurant. May get a bit loud. Loved the laab and the curries. Definitely just the right amount of spice for me. Good sized portions and the sticky rice served in the woven thing was cool. Also enjoyed their tofu dish. Packed on a holiday weekday night. Definitely recommended.

We didn't have a reservation for Thip Khao, as they were fully reserved all the way until Dec 28. We decided to chance it and get to the restaurant right at opening time at 5pm, and we were smart to do that. There were already other people here, likely having the same idea. After we got seated, I noticed that there were people who ended up standing at the bar - I think they got food, not just drinks. Thip Khao is always delicious, but not as good as the very first time I came to this restaurant - perhaps the flavors hit differently once you've had them before? Either way, my star dish of the night was the Muu Haeng, the pork jerky - I had this once before but had forgotten which dish I had gotten. In the past, I had gotten the Piing thinking it was this dish, but was always slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the Piing pork shoulder is perfectly fine! But the pork jerky is a little bit crunchy... hard to explain, but it's really good, and not too dry. I wish they provided more rice, dishes came with either a ball of sticky rice, which is difficult to share with a party, or a small bowl of white rice. So you may want to consider getting extra rice, to avoid being meated out. As an aside, the restaurant is quite dark, and it was almost hard to see our food until we switched tables.

Disappointing take-out experience. We ordered 5 dishes and most were underwhelming or too salty. Total cost of these 5 entrees was $136. After adding tip you're well over $160. Given the quality of the food and how overly salty they were, it was a disappointing experience especially given the high praise by others. * Laab chicken - this is normally a refreshing appetizer but what we received was literally inedible. We tried a couple bites and even had it with rice to cut down the saltiness, but we couldn't do it. I've had this dish *many* times and this is by far the worst. The saltiness overwhelms all other flavors in this dish. If I were dining it, I would absolutely return this dish. * Kee Mao chicken - chicken was dry and noodles were clumped together. Overall flavor and seasoning was OK at best. I'd hope this dish is much better if you have it dining in. * Gang Phet beef - this was our favorite dish of everything we ordered. Red curry flavor was balanced and the beef and vegetables were delicious. I would reorder and recommend to others. This dish is comparable to many other reputable Laotian and Thai restaurants which is to say it is good but not exceptionally better. * Piing pork shoulder - the pork was well seasoned and grilled. The accompanying sauce was extremely salty. A little dip is more than enough before becoming too salty to eat. Price was reasonable and portion is generous. Nice entree to share. I would recommend. $24 * Chuenh Paa sa Moun Pai crispy catfish. I was pleasantly surprised to find this entree still very crispy. There were three pieces for $28. The spicy fish sauce is very salty and I'm thankful it came in a separate container. Very small amount is sufficient to complement the crispy fried fish.

Thip Khao is rich, soulful Lao flavors that feel both deeply traditional and exciting. Every dish is packed with heat, funk, and freshness, clearly made with intention and care. The menu encourages sharing and it's definitely a must to order family-style. From the bold spices to the vibrant textures, it's a meal that lingers with you long after you leave. A must-visit for anyone who loves food with depth and personality. A good place to try out for a book club, etc. Ordered: - Tam Som ( Classic Papaya Salad) - Kee Mao - Naem Khao - Gaeng Phet - Pun Mieng - Khao Niew Ma- Moung Note: if you don't handle spice, make sure to ask to adjust the spice levels.

We got to Thip Khao right as the restaurant opened at 5 pm and we were promptly seated. It didn't get too busy until around 6 pm. (There were no reservations available for the night we wanted to go, but plenty of walk-in seating for early dinner.) The food was delicious but a bit overpriced for the amount of food we got per dish. In the end, we ended up with 5 dishes between 3 people (we had a small amount of leftover food in the end). We didn't curate our orders properly and ended up with too many meat dishes. We ordered: - Muu Haeng (pork jerky) - Beef kee mao (flat rice noodles) - Chenh Laa sa Moun Pai (crispy catfish) - Piing (pork shoulder) with sticky rice - Naem Khao (crispy coconut rice salad) The stand outs were the pork jerky (very flavorful and chewy) and crispy catfish (excellent fish sauce and texture). The crispy coconut salad was nice too, but there was def not enough of it to justify the price ($21). The pork shoulder needed a bigger sticky rice portion to go with it; taste-wise it was just fine. Service was good. The restaurant needs more lighting; the tables in the middle of the restaurant near the doors were nearly in the dark.

Wow! Everything we had here was absolutely delicious, including the cocktails! We chose vegetarian options, and I was delighted to find that the tofu in each dish was prepared in a different way that suited what it was paired with. The Pad Kee Mao is always a favorite, but the curry was a surprise star of the show, especially with the eggplant and tofu. We weren't asked for a spice level, but I was glad to find that it was spiced just right for my palette. This place is loud and hopping but still made for a good place to catch up.

KenScale: 8.0/10 Visit: August 2026…read more At this point, many people would instantly recognize Thai food from some of the more popular dishes like Pad Thai or spicy curry. But Southeast Asia is by no means a monolith when it comes to culinary tradition and culture. Vietnam, of course, has a large place in the regional and global culinary scene. How about smaller neighbors in the region like Laos? My wife Jun would love to visit the country one day, but for now Baan Mae would offer a good preview of what the Laotian food tastes like. Chef Seng Luangrath, who has been the face of the Lao Food movement in the U.S. (she also has another restaurant Thip Khao that we had visited before), wants to showcase her country's food at Baan Mae, which also draws from the influence of Thailand and Burma. Overall, we had a very solid dinner at the restaurant. Based on the reviews of the restaurant, it seemed like a no-brainer to order the "FiLao-O-Fish" sliders. The sliders with fried Chesapeake blue catfish (the restaurant has a mission to eat as many of these invasive species as possible) with spicy tofu mayo was indeed a very delicious snack to kick off the meal. Jun, an avid fried chicken eater, also highly approved the crispy fried chicken wings with jaew bong sauce, a traditional Lao chili paste made with mushroom, soy and tamarind. If you are looking for a dish with a bit more neutral flavor, the Hua Pii salad would be a great option. The shredded banana blossom salad with jicama and tamarind sauce had this very addictive quality while also tasting healthy. For the main dish, we shared the Gaeng Daeng Puu red coconut curry with lump crab on the bartender's recommendation, and it turned out to be a wise choice as well. We both wished the coconut curry had a bit more spicy kick, but otherwise the rich flavor was an unexpected antidote to the humid DC summer. We finished our meal with the green Thai tea gelato, which tasted more green tea than Thai iced tea; not a bad dessert but not as distinctive as we had hoped to be. Getting a reservation at Baan Mae is fairly manageable with about a week out. The dining space is fairly modest, but you can also try your luck at the bar area like we did and chat with the bartender to discuss food and drinks options. The restaurant has a number of interesting cocktail options incorporating ingredients and flavors from Southeast Asia, as well as a short list of wines and beers. The atmosphere of the dimly lit dining space with colorful walls feels pretty lively and ideal for a casual get-togethers or dates. Baan Mae has long been on my list of new restaurants to visit, and I'm glad Jun and I finally paid a visit. Jun certainly liked her experience enough to say she can see herself going back again in the near future, and I feel the same.
