Dropped by Pho 37 in Richmond for dinner before getting on a long haul flight at YVR. Since the temperature was starting to drop as Fall started to roll in, I wanted to have Pho for dinner to soothe and warm my stomach for the 12hr flight I was about to take. We had a bit of trouble finding Pho37 as it was located on the outer rim/roadside of the complex in Richmond. Parking is available in the complex but can be quite full at times since there are a lot of establishments in the complex. Interiors are clean and nicely decorated. While staff were prompt and attentive. We ordered the following: rare beef pho (for me), lemongrass chicken with extra egg (for hubby) and spring rolls to start. My Pho was flavourful and portion was quite big -- it satisfied my craving for pho. The hubby enjoyed his lemongrass chicken plus the free soup that came with it. Spring rolls were ok. Pricing is a bit higher compared to other Vietnamese restaurants -- $2.50 for a fried egg and spring rolls were a bit pricier and smaller portions. Food here is pretty good. I mean, finding a Pho venue without any MSG is difficult enough so this place has a good selling point to start. Portions are large. We were 3 guys and can usually eat quite a bit was barely able to finish 3 main dishes. Service is very fast, pho came in less than 5mins. Ordered 1 pho, 1 dry noodle, 1 lemon grass chicken rice. we were visiting Vancouver after our Alaska cruise and wanted to eat something different, so we came across this place we found on Yelp. most of us ordered their normal Pho, number 11 on the menu if I recall correctly. This is the newest relaunch location of Pho 37, previously tried the Steveston Ironwood location and it was only so so and I expected this location would do much better as it is new and need to have a good launch. The decor was great, the staff were attentive, and the Vietnamese coffee had the right balance of sweetness/smoothness without being too bitter, and it was just perfect. For the standard test I usually order the restaurant's special pho (everything beef pho), and it was a bit lacking. There were expected portions of beef, but the noodles got super soft really fast but didn't absorb much flavor because the soup was pretty bland. They had hoisin sauce and house special chili oil/sauce rather than siracha, plus house pickled garlic (yum). However, what made the experience dive to a two star was the tea cups and one of the spoon had things dried stuck to them and wasn't cleaned well. Pho 37 Last visit 2/12/3019 For the last few years, we had considered Banh Mi Tres Bon the best local Pho place. Pho 37 has changed that. The traditional fried spring rolls are very good; great presentation. Taste identical to Banh mi Tres Bon (that's a good thing). But the traditional beef w/ meatballs Pho was a revelation: sweet, savoury in a rich and delightfully fragrant way. It's very telling that this was the only time my wife didn't try to add seasoning to her noodles; perfect as is. This is the new standard in town; so much so that we can't even imagine going back to Pho Hoa for their traditional pho (their coconut broth beef saté pho and their fancy drinks are still worth going back for, but I digress). Speaking of which, Pho 37 also has a peanut sate pho (I tried beef, but you can also order it with chicken, or vegetarian & tofu). Again, this has their signature sweetness, but with a kick; very much like the Vietnamese version of tan tan. Again, richest most intese pho broth in town (wife found it spicy. I couldn't taste the spiciness, but could feel the heat afterwards) Alas no fancy drinks, no macaroons or French pastries. But we have to return to try everything else! After hearing a lot of great things about Pho 37's Ironwood location, I knew I had to try it out. With the sudden drop in temperature, my hankering for pho was at an all-time high and I came for a casual dinner last night before karaoke Tuesday at K-Fever in the same plaza. The restaurant space here is really bright and clean, with two giant booths near the door that can accommodate 8-10 comfortably. We were served pandan tea and the service was polite and cordial. I ordered their signature Pho Tuan (#40), which was a complex beef pho with great depth of flavour. I really liked the different cuts of rare beef in the bowl; they all had decent marbling and remained tender even after cooking. The addition of the poached egg added a creamy texture to the broth and I used it to coat the meat for a silkier mouth feel. With chunks of minced ginger and sliced pickled garlic in the broth, the pho here leans more towards the Northern Vietnamese style. I also added their homemade chili sauce to the bowl and I would highly recommend it - it's more aromatic than spicy and the lemongrass really kicks the flavour up a notch. Between the four of us, we also tried the Bun Bo Hue and a broken rice dish. The former was super flavourful without them overdoing the chili oil and the latter very well-executed and well portioned. We got the #37 Broken Rice, which came with a giant lemongrass pork chop, steamed meat cake, and shredded pork. Every bite was packed with flavour and the pork chop wasn't overly tough or chewy. Pho 37 leaves a giant bottle of nuoc mam on the table for you to use at your leisure, which I thought was a nice touch. The food here is definitely a step above the average hole in the wall and it's nice to finally have a decent choice for Vietnamese eats in central Richmond. When you think of Richmond, Vietnamese isn't usually what comes to mind for eats. Pho 37's claim to fame is that they don't use MSG. It's located in Ironwood Plaza but they also have a second location (out in Steveston). There's a mix of table and booth seating but they cap out at 46 seats. Jazz/elevator music is unexpected but the vibe is chill and the NBA seems to always be up on their TV's. Service is standard but the food comes out quickly. The menu is focused with 40 items; appetizers, pho, vermicelli noodle bowl, crispy chow mein, rice plates, combination plates, chef's specialty and desserts. FYI: 10% off on Monday's. Trip #1 We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 1:30pm) and the place was bumping. - Herbs - basil, bean sprouts and lemon wedges. - Bo tai chanh (#35) ($15.50) - Vietnamese beef carpaccio. Haven't seen this at many other spots in town (only Phnom Penh comes to mind). The portion size is generous and would be better shared between three people. Good acidity, a bit of texture from the fried garlic chips, peanuts and freshness from the onion and cilantro. - Pho tuan (#40) ($14.50) - the beef slices and balls were fantastic; slices are slightly smoked beforehand and melt in your mouth. The broth was unlike any other pho I've had; bright, fragrant and slightly creamy. It's almost like a hybrid between a pho and ramen bowl. Definitely a must try. - Pho sate ga (#15) ($13.95) - we went with chicken, which was generous in portion and incredibly tender, flavourful pieces. The broth is thick (aka. noodles will soak it all up) but impressive with great depth and complexity. It's been awhile since I've had a satisfying sate. Trip #2 We dropped in on an early Saturday (around 5:30pm). No wait and not too busy inside. - Bun bo hue ($13.95) - broth was excellent; good depth, balance and flavour. This location in the Union Square complex is owned by the same owners as Pho 37 in Steveston. The menu looks the same. The first thing we see as we approached the restaurant was their sign saying "no msg" taped to the door, so yay, guess we're eating healthier. Being new, the space feels clean. The servers are very nice and welcoming; all smiles. They even asked if we wanted our bean sprouts cooked or raw, noticing we had children and pregnant people at our table. We tried their #11 House Special Pho and their specialty #40 Special Beef Noodle Pho. They only offer 1 size pho and the portion size is quite generous. The #11 House Special pho, though good, was not the best pho compared to other places. Where they stood out was their #40 Special Beef Noodle Pho - the soup was so flavorful and creamy. Teng's special pho is TO DIE FOR! It comes with an egg which makes the broth extra creamy. I recommend popping the yolk after taking a few bites on the broth on its own. I've been coming to Pho 37 for the past few months now and personally love this location more than their Steveston location. It's got high ceilings and plenty of windows that let in plenty of natural lighting, so even though there are less tables, it feels more spacious. They offer the same menu as their Steveston restaurant and I think the quality is the same across the board. The dishes I've gotten consistently are the lemongrass chicken with rice, lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl, the hot and sour seafood soup, the #40 Chef's Special, and the BBQ pork banh mi. I keep wanting to try new things on their menu, but always end up resorting back to one of these five because they're all so good. Since I've been on a banh mi kick, I've gotten their banh mis quite a few times more recently and do have to comment on how their baguettes are perfect. Probably one of the best pho places in Richmond. I always get the Tuan special. It's grilled beef and has a charcoal flavour in the soup. Bit of garlic, ginger and the broth flavour is unique. It's very tasty and it's one big bowl of pho. Staffs are friendly and the restaurant is new and clean. It's always packed here so just make sure you put your name down in the front. I come here very often for their pho and it's good every time. Their beef carpaccio is also fantastic. Almost everything is good here to be honest. Iced coffee is a big portion cause I know it's a bit pricey for it here. Prices are higher than other pho restaurants by not too much more but it's worth it! There's just something very unique about this broth it has a lingering smokey flavour that works perfectly in the broth that gives off that extra comfort food feel! If you like to add chili/hot sauce to your pho remember to take a few sip of the broth first to truly enjoy subtle smokiness because the hot sauce does hide flavour of the broth a bit. It also has a raw egg in the pho too that you can mix or leave it poaching in the soup. It adds an extra creaminess to the broth! The springs roll was fried nicely too with the bubbly crispy wrapper and a good filling. Overall a great experience here and hope to be back. You guys... this place RUINED Pho for me. Why?! Because it's so DAMN GOOD that I can't go anywhere else now. It's over an hour drive during traffic for me to even go there but it's so worth it. The one major thing about this place is that they don't use MSG and yet their broth is sooo flavourful. I haven't found any place close to this in Vancouver yet (if you know any, holla at yo girl). I always get their no. 40 Tuan's Special, its a bit of a unique flavour but amazing (their regular pho is delicious as well). The portions are quite big with generous amounts of meat. The vietnamese beef carpaccio here has a lot of meat and peanuts which I love. The sampler platter was filled with flavour and a lot of different kinds of meat if you want some variety. I also tried their green papaya salad which was good (tastes like most places in van) I ordered take out before on another occasion but there was a mistake in my order. The Pho Dac Biet is soooooo goood! I was visiting the town for the Night Market, but left it since I was craving Vietnamese food. Found this place a couple blocks away from the Night Market and had a blast! I went here for another 3 nights. I ate the Pho Dac Biet, the Vermicelli Eggroll dish, and the Rice with Pork Chops. The Rice with Pork Chops could have been better, but everything was great! The service was average! Since they probably had a long day. Mostly Viet workers! Pho 37 is by far my favourite Vietnamese restaurant for specialty pho in Richmond. While we have numerous great locations for regular pho, not many in the city offer specialty options. Now, I haven't tried many other dishes from here other than the #40 - "Chef Tuan's Special". This dish has a way to my heart because it's not your regular pho. Like everywhere else, the noodle soup is served with the usual beef, beef balls, and rice noodles. What makes #40 different is that they add a bit of green garlic and an egg to the broth. On top of that, the beef is pan-fried, which gives the broth a smokey flavour. Because the beef is slightly cooked prior to being added to the soup, the juices and oils of the beef disintegrates into the broth, giving it a kick of rich beef flavours. read more

On that day, we ordered the Special Beef Noodle and the Charbroiled Lemongrass Pork Chop. The Noodle was great. The noodle was well-balanced portion with the freshly beef, meat ball and tripe. We ended up ordering special beef noodle (well done) and Vietnamese shaking beef. Food arrived a short time later. However, the meat slices were still raw when the bowl of noodles arrived. Broth was light but flavourful. There was a good amount of noodles and toppings. The Vietnamese shaking beef was alright. I still prefer the version at Phnom Penh Restaurant and have not found anything close to that version. Ginger ale was served with a cold glass cup. Good service on the that part. This is the cleanest and most modern looking pho restaurant I have come across that also serves delicious food! I would highly recommend the peanut satay pho, which is mild-moderately spicy. The rich, creamy broth is divine! You get to choose your protein, and I got it with chicken. It's not just dry chicken bits that they throw in. Rather, there are tender slices of what almost tastes like Hainanese style chicken that soak up the yummy soup. Their curry and vermicelli bowls are also beautiful and packed with flavour--not to mention all generously sized. Their spring rolls are top notch, as well. Note that their menu doesn't have many of your traditional pho options, so if you just want a well done brisket pho or a Bun Bo Hue, this is NOT the place to go.
