After work I was looking for a place to have dinner in Richmond. Felt like eating something hot with soup. Someone suggested a few places and I picked this restaurant. It is a small Vietnamese restaurant, sitting low profile in the neighbourhood of Capstan. There are plenty parking lots outside. I ordered the fish cake noodle soup which is chef recommended. It took a while to cook. The fish cakes were unlike those in other Vietnamese restaurant, they are soft. The soup tasted soothing and without too much flavours. It is good as an everyday noodle soup. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (3:30pm). The inside is tiny (3 tables, 6 high stool seats). Service was no frills, tea cups came out lukewarm. - Herbs - bean sprouts, basil and lemon wedges. Basil was limp. - Tan's special spicy pho ($16.99) - generous portion of meat. Best was the brisket, rare sliced sirloin and pork hock. Broth was decent, heat subtle. Puzzled by the raw red onions. - Han's countryside crab noodle soup ($16.00) - bun rieu broth was weak, lacking depth and substance. Plenty of Vietnamese ham. Ordered banh mi to go on their website. It said that order will be ready at 7.40 pm. I went there at 8 pm, and order still not ready. They are too busy with the people who eats in. They rushed in making my order, the bread was barely toasted. No crunch and crisp. This is the first time this place messed up my order. Everything else was good tho, chicken was grilled well, pickled veggies were tart and sweet. I've been going here for a long time and tried almost all their menu. Not bad for pho in richmond in terms of prices, flavour and authenticity but this is a TINY restaurant. With only about 5 tables, they have a smaller menu of mostly pho, rice dishes and sandwiches which was fine for mom and me since we only wanted a light meal. We ordered their choose your own beef pho and a grilled chicken banh mi which were both well priced, light tasting and although a bit smaller in portion, plenty enough to fill us up. Getting to choose our own meats in the noodle soup was a highlight since we could pick and choose exactly what we wanted but be warned, the small is QUITE SMALL. Today seemed to be a soup kind of day since it was a mix of rain and snow. My girlfriend and myself were debating on pho or hot pot. But it was an easy decision when I started craving some spring rolls! We both got a number 1 large which is there house special and got spring rolls to share. The soup came hot steamy which was perfect for this kind of day. There was plenty meat and a perfect amount of noodles. The broth was spot on so it made a dark and dreary day like today perfect! The egg rolls were a perfect golden brown which had a super satisfying crunch when biting down. There was plenty filling which was great since most places will have more wrapper than filling. Overall my first visit here was very pleasant and quick since they seated us and served us very quickly. This hidden gem does not survive on walk ins. It is the very definition of a "hole in the wall". There are only about 4 to 5 tables. I came here with my boyfriend and another couple, luckily it wasn't a busy time because the dining area is really small with about 5-6 small tables. Note: Monday's they have 10% off Pho and $2.99 Banh Mi! The Pho broth was light but not too salty. The noodles were tender and chewy. The beef was thinly sliced and fresh but there really wasn't a lot of meat in my bowl of pho. I was satisfied but not the biggest bowl of pho I've had. I recently tried their Banh Mi. I ordered their Cold Cut and their Grilled Pork. The baguette was fresh and crunchy with a nice smear of buttery goodness. The cold cut meat were fresh but there wasn't too much meat included. The grilled pork had a really good grilled smokey flavour and there was more pork meat compared to the cold cut. The pickled carrots and radish were very julienned and the cilantro of course brings the entire Banh Mi all together into a sub of fresh, crisp, delicious flavours. After months of trying pho at shops all over the lower mainland, eating the good, the bad, and the ugly... this weekend I had what has to be the best pho so far. The noodles felt freshly made, soft, tender, and didn't require the chopstick wiggle to loosen them up. The broth was perfectly seasoned, light, well clarified, and unique in that it almost had a sweetness. And then, there was the beef. Rather than piling it in the middle of your bowl, having it cooked by the time it hits you, they lay it out along the side of the bowl in such a way that you can cook it as need be. Beautiful, perfectly rare, perfectly sliced. It was heaven. Tiny spot, with maybe 8 tables, but churns people out quickly. We also had the banhi mi and it was pretty awesome. A great little divey Pho restaurant. I've driven by this place multiple times on my way to and from Costco. After reading good things, I finally decided to give it a try. First thing you notice is that it's pretty small and a bit off to the side from the rest of the strip mall. Next to Manzo. They have maybe 8 tables. Menu is really nice. Clear, professional and easy to read. Regular Pho is $5.99 for small and $6.99 for large. I ordered the Pho with rare steak and meatballs. They have about 4 different sandwiches. I got the cold cut sub for $2.99. Also got Spring rolls for $2.99. That's my main negative of this place, the prices are so good that I ended up ordering too much and had to be carrying out of the restaurant. The food tasted really fresh. That is something that we shouldn't really have to mention since it should be so obvious in good restaurants, but isn't as common as I would like. Total for 2 people came to $22 for 2 Pho, 2 orders of Spring rolls and 1 sub. The rice dishes looked really good. The outside already looks pretty dingy looking, but the inside is quite the same. It fits less than 20 diners at a time and is run by husband and wife. We were seated on the side next to the windows and there were bars on the windows for security. S described that it felt like he was in a prison... Anyways, first thing I noticed was that the prices had increased from what I had saw online. Previously, a small pho was only $5.99, but it was now $6.50, so quite comparable to other pho spots. I chose the House Special Beef Noodle Soup and it came with rare sliced sirloin beef which were presented laying on the side of the dish. For some reason, that didn't feel really appetizing to me, even though I eat rare beef. The bowl also came with beef flank, brisket, tendon, meatballs and tripe. The bean sprouts that came with the noodles were old and wilted. The soup itself was okay, but not mind blowing. There is definitely better pho around Richmond. S got the Grilled Lemongrass Pork Chop on Rice, which S complained throughout dinner. The pork chop was dry and most of it was inedible since it was either fat or too chewy. The dish also came with shredded pork, fried egg, and vegetables on rice. To be honest, the plate looked pretty sad and I felt like my parents could do a better job. S obviously was unhappy with the dish. They also completely forgot our order of spring rolls, but we didn't want to give it a try anyways after having our food. Service is also basically non-existent and we had to go up to pay since we weren't able to get the attention of anyone. The food: I ordered the Bun Bo Hue, which is a pork and spicy version of the original pho. Hmm, the beef is too tender that doesn't hold up. Unfortunately it just wasn't my cup of tea. The pho, which is the best dish to get here, tasted underdeveloped. My group also got bun bo hue and bun tom, both of which just tasted like a pho broth base with extra flavorings added on top. Execution was sloppy: the noodles in the bun bo hue were overboiled to the point of soggy and the beef was cut with the grain. The bad, I ordered salad rolls but only got one, "one"?, but an order of 2 salad rolls is $3.99. Fish sauce that came with my chicken was so watered done. Our server didn't talk much and only nodded when we spoke to him or gave our order. I was actually afraid that my banh mi would come out way before the pho but surprisingly everyone's pho came and I still had to wait a while for the banh mi to come. The pho dac biet was average. The bun bo hue was ok, not spicy at all to me but tasted perfect for my friend. The banh mi was crisp and the filling tasted good, but it seemed quite hollow to me. It missed the soft fluffy texture and while I was eating it, I noticed something. I wasn't quite sure if it was a hair but it sure looked like one. My roommate and I have been to this restaurant a few times over the past two weeks. We did not have high expectations as it was just a convenient restaurant near our neighbourhood and the restaurant had no customers everytime we walked by. However, I believe this is because the previous vietnamese restaurant owner at the same location was not good at all. We were very skeptical when a new owner (a young vietnamese couple) took over, but thought we should still give it a chance. It was the best deal we have had for a while! But we did not go back simply because of the price, but also because of the good food. The store stated "No MSG", which is nearly unheard of for vietnamese restaurants, but is true. You can taste homemade vietnamese cooking here. They cook everything right when you order, and the food are all fresh as well. and we have not encountered any dish that is too salty, a common fault for vietnamese noodles. You get your money's worth not in terms of the portion, but the generous meat and vegetable ingredients. The first time we tried their beef noodle soup, which was very good value for the price we paid for. The next time my roommate tried the dry vermicelli which contained pork, spring rolls, and veggies. The pork was cooked nearly to perfection where it is not dry, oily, nor too salty. I tried the lemon grass chicken which came in two pieces when you normally get one in all other restaurants, and once again it was cooked to near perfection. Not dry, oily nor salty. What we liked the most though was their specialty soup. My roommate loved the "spicy soup" which contained pork hock, fish cakes and other ingredients as well. I had another type of special soup that contained shrimp and other "lighter" style of food that was one of the best vietnamese noodles I have had for its price (and we've both had at least 10 different type of vietnamese noodles). Although the service is slow, it is because they prepare everything on the spot for you and the wife cooks most of the stuff herself. They are very warm and friendly and you get a "family" like feeling. I have never written a review for any restaurants, but I really want to give this restaurant a good start as the owners are very sincere (especially the wife!) and their son is just adorable. This is a great little family-run place. The broth is clean and tasty, without being greasy. When you order pho with rare beef, they actually take the time to drape each slice along the edge of your bowl, so they don't become overcooked before it gets to your table (one of my pet pho peeves). Today, I tried the Bun Bo Hue - a regional specialty from Hue, the former capital of Vietnam. Disclaimer: the soup contains pork blood and pork hock so be prepared. Give it a try if you're feeling a little adventurous, though! It's delicious, and not as scary as it might sound. The portions are a little smaller than the average pho joint, but I think what you get in quality is worth it. I also saw people coming in to pick up dozens of Bahn Mi (Vietnamese subs) to go, which I now want to try on my next visit!
