We have been to the Pho 79 in Minneapolis a few times and enjoyed it, but we thought we'd try the St. Paul location for a change. It is smaller and located in a small strip center, but it is definitely convenient. The menu is also smaller, though it has a good representation of beef pho, chicken stock pho, rice bowls, etc. One thing I really missed from the other location was the noodle bowl options, which are kind of like cold noodle salads with no broth at all. I also was hoping for a bubble tea, but they don't do those here either. What we did order was good. I got the #35 which is egg noodles in a chicken base with shrimp dumplings and pork. Pretty tasty. The pho comes with the normal lime, sprouts, thai basil and jalepenos on the side. Price-wise, you can't beat it. We both ate and got a shrimp roll appetizer (just OK) for $20 including tax. Seriously. Service-wise, I would say it was just meh. The woman who was waiting on us seemed very impatient. She seemed annoyed when we asked for a few more minutes to look at the menu. She came over several times basically to check to see if we were done and then took my bowl away the minute that I was finished. Then she hovered to see when my husband would finish. We were coming up on their 8 oclock closing time, but it was still before 8. We came in with plenty of time to eat and it seemed like she was just annoyed at us for having the gall to want to eat during their operating hours. She also did some things that i consider rude, like coming to our table in the middle of our meal and unceremoniously shoving more chopsticks into the container of chopsticks on the table. We were also not ever offered anything to drink except water and had to ask for a water refill. So in all, the food was good, though we thought the selection was limited compared to the other location. This will do in a pinch but we are more likely to go to the other Pho 79 next time. read more

I'm completely dumbfounded by anyone who says this place has good pho! This is easily one of the lamest bowls of pho that I've had in my entire life. This is the ONLY TIME in my life that I've never finished the whole bowl of pho because it was so bad, there was 3/4 left in the bowl. The broth tastes like someone poured a can of Campbell's chicken broth and simmered it with a pinch of salt and 1 whole star anise. I've had better pho from an instant package. If i were truthful, i would give it a 3.6. So i decided to round up. Decor: Nice, dimly lit place in the middle of nowhere. Enough seating except during lunch time. Service: Ok. Don't expect top notch service. They leave you alone and check up for water once every 15-20 mins. Food comes out relatively fast and the prices are on the lower end (which is a good thing). Spring rolls: Are just spring rolls. Pork, shrimp, lettuce, wrapped in rice paper served with crnched peanuts in hoisen sauce and topped with carrot shreds. Eggrolls: i usually like my eggrolls double fried with rice paper, but their eggrolls are a tasty alternative. Pho 15: I've had their Pho 0 before and i like it, but the 15 fell short of my expectation. It was like a failed mixture of Bun Bo Hue and pho. I would avoid this dish if you don't like the contrast. All in all, food, price, service, and location, it's the best place around that area to get pho. read more

I'm a hardcore pho lover and have been getting their Spicy Pho for a while now. I think I'm ready to go steady with this baby. Now, when I say Spicy Pho it's not going to make you chug water to save your life. It's pretty mild, but the broth is so flavorful! That's what makes it so wonderful~ If you get take-out cause you're lazy to cook like me, then this is probably a pretty good place to grab pho take-out because: 1) The Pho is almost cooked so you don't have to microwave your broth for 5 minutes to cook your noddles 2) Broth is pretty damn hot so it'll cook your noodles to perfection - just don't be late to pick it up! 3) They don't ripe you off with the amount As for their dinning service, it has to be one of the fastest restaurants that serves you pho. This was my second time eating at this restaurant. I've always passed it by on my way to and from school, and wanted to try their pho. The first time I came, it was around 11:30 and I had to circle around the lot multiple times before I could find a spot. The second time I came, it was right at 10:55 so the restaurant wasn't open yet and finding parking was a lot easier. If you want to avoided to lunch rush, my suggestion would be to come in between when the open at 11 and 11:30. Once that lunch rush hits, it's way busier inside the restaurant. The food comes out incredible fast. By the time we had sat down and ordered, all of our food was on our table within 5 minutes. The pho is seasoned well and I do not have to add many additional sauces, except for chili oil. Their Vietnamese coffee is very good, it's on the darker side and the sweetener they add gives it just the right amount of sweetness. I was a little worried at first as it's in the industrial park and looks like a sketchy area. But the inside is tastefully decorated. The service was quick and very friendly. The food came out quickly and it was AMAZING. So flavorful and made my tastebuds giddy with delight. I had the number 12 pho. My husband is an extremely picky eater but he had their wings and Vietnemese coffee and he was even a fan which is probably the highest compliment. I was very disappointed with this restaurant. When I walked in, the store was fairly small but that was okay. I ordered my food and it came as usual. The tea comes in individually made cups with tea bags and not the typical tea pot. My sister in law ordered a Seafood Hu Tieu but received a Seafood Pho. We pointed out the issue and were told that she had ordered the Seafood Pho. Upon further investigation I. E. Looking at the ticket, we found that she had indeed ordered the Seafood Hu Tieu. After realizing their mistake, the server quickly took the bowl back into the kitchen and brought out the correct order in minutes. My nephew had ordered a rice, shrimp, and pork rice platter. The server seemed to have forgotten his meal. When the nine other people sitting at our table had received their meals and were about halfway through, we notified the server that my nephew had not received his food. The server went back into the kitchen and brought it out quickly. My brother, had ordered a coffee but was not brought it until we reminded the server at the END of our meal. Thankfully we remembered the coffee right before we had payed the bill because it was listed. The food was mediocre. Leaning more on the bad side. My daughter had ordered a pork rice platter. The pork was over cooked and dry. The rice was 'weird.' That's all she said. I personally went for the classic Pho Special. It was equipped with: cooked beef, meatballs, bean sprouts, medium rare beef, and greens. The table had Hoisin and Sriracha sauce to accommodate the pho as needed by the customer. I'm always down to scarf some hot soup, even in the summer. Pass the sriracha. We parked in the strip mall and headed right in, and someone seated us asap. The service is so friendly! After browsing the 300 different types of noodle soup, I settled on the Hu Tieu: Combination of both rice and egg noodles with imitation crab, shrimp, chicken, and pork with a chicken broth base. I felt like I was getting a cold and this would be the cure. We also ordered the Spring Rolls (2 for $3.75). The spring rolls came out very quickly. They were ok; but the pork and shrimp were dry. They also lacked any herbs. But then the soup swiftly followed, and this huge hot bowl with fresh fixings was just $7.75! The flavor was excellent and just what I wanted. And I always love the crunch of the fresh bean sprouts. It was the perfect amount of comfort and fuel that I needed to get through the rest of the god forsaken Monday. read more

I had the 50 with chicken broth. The bowl had a lot of veggies and the tofu tasted well with it. My only issue is that the ratio of noodles to broth wasn't good. I wanted more noodles!! My boyfriend and I were craving pho, so we decided to come here as it was in the neighborhood and had pretty good Yelp reviews. At first entry, there was no one to immediately greet us. The waiter was sitting at a table eating food himself, but directed us to sit where we would like. Upon seating, we were delivered our menus and water almost immediately. We ordered pork egg rolls and two different types of pho. The egg rolls came out first. They were crispy and good, but nothing out of the ordinary of egg rolls that I've had at other Vietnamese restaurants. They seemed more highly stuffed with carrots than pork. Our soups came out quickly as well. However, the noodles had a bitter aftertaste and the broth was nothing special. I'm used to eating pho with broth rich in several different flavors, but this one seemed rather plain to me. The portion was typical of what you can expect at all other pho places in the area. Although the service was very quick, the waiter was not friendly and made minimal interaction with us throughout our whole time there. The environment also wasn't very pleasant, as it is a very tiny restaurant with very few people there and in my opinion, was not a good place to sit down, relax, and enjoy some conversation. Pretty good spot. I am a fan of the eggrolls, they are super crispy and come out hot. I even burned my mouth a little trying to eat them. I ordered the Mi Wonton because I prefer egg noodles and love wonton noodle soup where I can get it. The wontons are not the best here in the soup. The wonton wrap is a bit hard as if it was not cooked all the way and the meat you get inside each one is not a lot. The soup base is definitely on the "porky" side of flavor. Which I do enjoy. It also comes with some bbq pork in it. Last time I tried the Vietnamese iced coffee which was strong but sweet. Vietnamese iced coffee is the perfect combo of really strong but still sweet. Let it sit for a while to get all the flavor of your peppers, basil, onions, etc., into the broth. When the suggestion was made that we pay by what we actually ordered she just kept repeating "split 3 ways even" as if she didn't understand what we meant BUT GIRL, stop playing you just don't feeeel like it. When the food finally came this lady actually shoved the bags in our hands & shooed us out the restaurant. Let's be honest, pho is pho. I dined here with my sister and her friend on a cold and windy December night. It was my first time having Pho, but certainly not my first time at a Vietnamese restaurant. I love all kinds of Vietnamese food, so I really wanted to try PHO! We got hot tea and Vietnamese coffee for drinks to start. I was pretty impressed with how low the prices are here. It's not a fancy place at all, but small and cute, located in a strip mall right on Energy Park Drive. Friendly and family-oriented, we saw lots of small children with their parents, enjoying the food. We ordered 2 rounds of Pork Egg rolls and 1 round of cream cheese puffs. Both were excellent! For entrees, we all ordered the number 8, Lean Tender Beef. Service was quite quick, although we did wait awhile for appetizers. Once our steaming bowls arrived, we started to dig in and add our sprouts, jalapeños and mint leaves. I had to add some Sriracha and hoisin sauce to my pho, it did not have a lot of flavor, but it was very good overall. I did not finish my bowl, much to the dismay of my other dining guests. It really is a big serving! The next time I go here I want to try the Vermicelli Salads with grilled pork. Those looked delicious on the menu! I also love how they have all the condiments on the table ready for you to use, including napkins, forks and sugar for your tea. How lovely! Went here for dinner with the family on a Friday at 6pm. Surprisingly they were not busy at all, we were the only customers. Looks like lots of take out orders sitting on an empty table. We order three of all different bowls of pho and one pork fried rice. One bowl with no onions. The one that we had placed for no onions had onions in it, the regular special pho was placed as a regular with everything on it had no meatballs or onions and the third bowl was correct. My son doesn't like or eat onions but managed to spoon out all onions that was in the bowl. I didn't want to bring it up to the wait staff or that older lady that works there because they already looked agitated from who knows what. After our food came out they did not come back to our table to check on how things were or to refill our waters. This is not or usual pho spot and will not be back for a while. I love this place! I'm a white girl, and I went alone. So when I took the recommendation from other reviews here I ordered the "Special Numba Zero" with fatty brisket, tripe and tendon, the waitress asked if I was absolutely sure. "You like tripe and tendon?" Why not?! And baby, it was goooood. And it was WAY too much food, I ended up leaving half the delicious broth behind. (Pho does not reheat well! Don't even try it, the noodles get weird.) The broth was fabulous, the meats were done well, and even the tripe was fantastic. I might have asked for more lime, but at least they gave me enough jalapeno and my own bottle of SriRacha. And the waitress pretty much left me to enjoy it without bothering me. read more

If fractional stars were available, I would give this place a 2.5 based on my single experience. I recently discovered this Pho 79 location, and decided to give it shot. I ordered pork egg rolls, a chicken bahn mi, and Hủ Tiếu Ga. The ChowNow interface worked well. The order was ready on my arrival, and immediately brought to my vehicle as I pulled up. The egg rolls were o.k., nothing special. Just not seasoned well, and the sauce was even a bit bland. Added Sri Racha at home. Very basic, but at least no large gristle nuggets were found. The bahn mi had excellent bread, but there was a very greasy taste from the chicken, as if it had been precooked, then reheated in oil. This was a different sort of diced chicken I have not experienced in a sandwich like this. Pretty plain aside from tasting so oily. No real flavor from the mayo, and I do not think any of the veg was pickled. If anything was pickled, it was very mild. Greasy and plain from a type of sandwich I usually find fresh and flavorful. I went with the plain chicken noodle soup-Hủ Tiếu Ga. You can sometimes cover a weak broth in spices, but this is the basics. It was pretty good broth, tasty and very clear. Richer than it appeared. Sadly, my dish was missing the promised broccoli, cabbage, and carrots. It came with a very small amount of the standard pho fixins-sprouts, peppers, and basil. A little more of that stuff would have been welcome (given the lack of other veg), but I give credit for not providing a wastefully large amount like many places do. This was the best tasting item of the three I tried. Too bad it was incomplete. I will likely try this place again, and try other items to find what is most successful. I asked for cooked/steamed bean sprouts and they couldn't understand me at first and when it came it was still cold but they insisted it was cooked. Overall experience was bad.
