I am from the Bay Area and this place was good! This was a spot that we stumbled upon after craving some Viet food. It is a quaint Vietnamese restaurant that serves good food and the owner is extremely kind! Their pho comes out hot, well seasoned, and well balanced between noodles & meat. They did not have pickled onions but the owner recommended for us to try the pickled young ginger and it was a combo I never knew I needed! So amazing with the hot pho. I really enjoyed the pho and service here. The parents stayed back and chatted it up with the owner. Overall such an amazing experience! We left happy and full! I've had a couple doozy experiences here over the last couple years, which makes me a little reluctant to eat there now. I wasn't crazy about the options for food in Hilo, we already had tried Antics pizza and even though it was delish we wanted to try something else on our second visit to the area. After looking around for food my husband can eat that won't bother him we agreed to pho 99. After a brief fiasco due to a power outage in Hilo, we sat down in the small restaurant and looked over the menu. For a Vietnamese place, I am used to a slightly larger selection but I trusted in the Yelp reviews and hoped that what they do make they make well. Well, the optimism paid off. Vietnamese iced coffee: I don't know how this is made but it is so SO good. Tastes like slight bitter caramel in the best way. Chicken pho: omg the broth is heavenly. I'm actually not a huge fan of pho but this broth was rich and perfectly balanced. This was my husbands order so I only got to try a couple bites but it made an impression. Shrimp spring roll cold noodle: this was my choice and damn I am so happy I made it. It was sooo light and refreshing but filling and satisfying. This place blew my mind! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. I've heard so many great things about the service and the food, specifically the Beef Stew Pho -- so that's exactly what I tried. It was so yummy! The broth is out of this world yummy, I gulped it all up. The meat was so tender and had so much flavor. It picked up the flavor of the broth so well. The spring rolls are also my absolute fave! Personally because it was more meaty and juicy. Great crunch too. I believe they make their own sweet and sour sauce that goes with it and I really love it! I had a hard time finding the place just because it's kind of tucked in the side of the building, but totally worth it when I found it. Lots of parking all around downtown Hilo. The service was incredible. It's just this older couple. The husband greets, seats and serves you food. He's great conversation and really kind. Pho 19 is a small hole in the wall restaurant with awesome pho! I have always gone to Pho Viet for pho, but decided to give Pho 19 a try after hearing good things about this place from a couple of coworkers. It might be a little difficult to find this place if you are not familiar with the area as there is no big, bold sign put up at the front of the restaurant. Just head a bit past the farmers market and you'll be able to find Pho 19. I ordered a small beef pho that came with all of the typical additions (basil, lemon, jalapeños, and bean sprouts). I also added in several spoonfuls of their hot chili oil, which was not overwhelmingly spicy and a had a rich, savory taste. There was lots and lots of beef packed into that little bowl, nice chewy noodles, and piping hot yummy broth. The small pho was the perfect size for a tiny human like me and such a great deal at only $6.95! Service was fast and friendly. One of the ladies saw us sweating as we were eating our pho on that humid Hilo evening and placed the fan right next to us. Very thoughtful. Overall, Pho 19 is a wonderful, tiny place with delicious food. I will definitely come here the next time that I'm craving pho. read more

I love pho! So when I travel I like to try out pho restaurants. This place is a ma and pa shop for sure. We had wonderful service from the owners. The prices were fair. But I was a little sketch out by watching everything happen in the kitchen and how things were prepared. Seeing things go in a microwave and such. None of us got sick but I was a little worried. Wow one of the best pho I've ever had (even compared to those in NorCal and northern Vietnam)! Our group of 7 came in within an hour of closing but had warm and expedient service. I shared the deep fried spring rolls which were reminiscent of imperial rolls as they came with lettuce wraps/ veggies and fish sauce for dipping. These were crispy and the vegetables were crunchy and fresh. I ordered the combination beef pho which had a very generous portion of beef and noodles. The soup was complex and flavorful and the accompanying bean sprouts were even pre steamed! I usually have them raw which cools down the soup too fast so this was such a nice touch. I took a few bites of the beef stew (they ran out of the usual accompanying baguette) and it was hearty and tomato-y. Delicious! Review #6 for 2021. I've been missing pho a lot during the pandemic, so I decided to get takeout from Pho 99 because of positive Yelp reviews. When I arrived, everything was ready, and the service was nice. The food was good overall, but I think pho is just something that's not great for takeout. Pho needs to be piping hot, which you lose when you're not eating in the restaurant. The different components were packaged separately, so nothing was mushy or overcooked. I'd love to return to this place post-pandemic to eat in and see what the quality of food is like then. read more

I like my sandwich and the summer rolls I ordered. I found them in Yelp just before heading to the airport. This was perfect since it was a chicken bahn mi sandwich and summer roll with their peanut sauce. The summer roll was great before getting in the plane. I didn't get a chance to at the sandwich till I arrived on Oahu but it was still delicious. The place is small but there was parking across the street. So if you worry about finding parking at least the public parking doesn't charge. read more

The best authentic vietnamese food I have had so far in Big Island. Beef combo pho was excellent - delicious broth, properly sliced beef sous vided to perfection, along with a well stocked collection of sauces - hoisin, sriracha, fish sauce, and even Lao Gan Ma chili oil and Maggi Wurze! Listen the food is delicious! Especially the pork sandwich. However when I ordered a takeout, asking for two spring rolls and a pork sandwich he only gave me the sandwich for the right price. I told him that I specifically asked for two spring rolls and a pork sandwich but he decided to give me attitude and say "that's not what I heard". What I don't understand is how could he give me just a sandwich when He even repeated the order to me over the phone "two spring rolls and a pork sandwich, will that be all?" I love going to Pho 99 for Seafood Pho. I may be wrong but they might be the only place that does seafood combo pho (well at least the GREAT one in Hilo) The portion is huge and broth is very fresh! Y'all this was an accident coming into here. It's nothing updated...like a place my dad decided to open a pho restaurant would look like. The pho is pretty good . Not use to the noodle texture but it does give it a more homier taste. We've got to talk about the banh mi. OMG. My aunt at home makes the best banh mi but my goodness I've never come across a banh mi with this taste before. It has like a kick of ginger in it. This small mom and pop shop is easy to miss, but don't! The pork banh mi (sandwich) is the one of the best I've ever had. It's the perfect balance of bread, veggies and protein. Great food! This is a little mom and pop place with very authentic food. Since it is a small establishment the service was excellent and very quick. Everything was cooked to order. Ambiance is simple but food is delicious and worth it! I had the beef pho and the broth was very rich others in the party had cold noodle bowls that were very large in size and were also very tasty.
