I've ordered from this place MANY times and the food was decent. I never had a problem with my previous orders. It's cold and rainy today, perfect weather for pho, so I placed my order and went to pick it up. I got back to my workplace and started eating my pho. The bean sprouts weren't fresh and looked soggy. I shrugged it off. I took a bite of my noodles and they had an odd fishy(?) taste/odor. I figured I was imagining it or it was because I ordered something different (pho mi hoanh thanh) from my usual pho tai. I've never had an issue with Pho & Spice before so I trusted them and ate most of my soup. SURE ENOUGH, the coworkers who ordered with me and I all got stomach cramps and food poisoning. 2 stars for crappy packaging, food poisoning, and for betraying my trust. Ordered delivery from Uber eats. The spring rolls were amazing, the dipping sauce was sweet and spicy. The pad Thai was a disappointment. Not enough sauce, scallions, or flavor. No chopped peanuts, few bean shoots. There was lots of flavorless chicken, so they didn't skimp on protein, which is what most Thai places do. I won't order from there again. If you have "Thai" in your name, you can't mess up pad Thai. It's a basic dish. Really terrible and slow service, but decent food. Naturally was very excited to try pho that wasn't from a food cart in New Haven. We were greeted really sullenly by the lady owner/manager, who could not even manage a hello. It took her about 10 minutes to walk over and take our order, despite us waving someone down for about 5 minutes. We got pho and spring rolls, which seemed like a classic combination of Vietnamese dishes. The spring rolls were really mediocre, so I would suggest saving your $5.95. The pho was decently priced ($9.95 for a medium bowl) and really chock full of noodle. I would have preferred more meat and less noodle, but I guess can't complain. It was a LOT of food. Last time I came here before tonight was about a year ago. My last experience was great. The Pho was awesome, broth was very savory and "beefy". Lots of flavor! Tonight however, I feel like I could have made a better Pho than the one I had. The broth tasted like it was made from a can. No flavor whatsoever. Very disappointed. I won't be returning. 3 stars for the food. Minus 1 star for the inept service. Table ordered a chicken pho, summer roll, fish cake, tom yum, tom kha, pad thai, duck/mango fried rice (didn't sample), and a beef salad. The decent: Chicken pho broth was ok from what I sampled. The table enjoyed the fish cake. Take it or leave it: Tom yum, pad thai, beef salad. Tom yum was ok - not the best, but not the worst. Pad thai was overly sweet and the beef salad was fine, but I am not going to write home about it...just yelp. Bad: Tom kha just tasted like coconut milk with 0 spice or other flavors. Summer rolls was like a lettuce wrap. The service was abysmal. It took a long time for the server to take our order, then we received 2 napkins to ration among the table. It took an annoying amount of effort to flag down the waitstaff for utensils, napkins, and the check. The pho was served without a spoon and garnish. Since moving here several months ago, I've been talking about how I wished there was a Vietnamese restaurant. The cart by the med school is good in a pinch, but I have been wanting to sit down and enjoy a giant bowl of pho for a long time. You can imagine my excitement when I found out that Pho & Spice was opening in New Haven - finally, the restaurant gods had granted me my wish. I'm always skeptical about restaurants that feature more than one type of Asian cuisine (ex: Chinese restaurants that serve sushi, or sushi bars that serve Korean). My general opinion is that these types of establishments are really good at one of the many cuisines they feature - or, more sadly, a mediocre showing across the board. Pho & Spice serves both Vietnamese and Thai food. I was initially wary, but hopeful that the Vietnamese side of the menu would be satisfactory. As far as Thai goes, there are a handful of other options in the area anyway. The other day I decided to get a medium pho (the "tai" version) to go. When I got there, it took 15 minutes before someone would take my order. I noticed several people waiting on line ahead of me who had already placed their orders and appeared to have been waiting a long time. Others seated at tables in the restaurants were also waiting for food (I overheard a group commenting that the wait time was ridiculous and that they had ordered 30 minutes prior but still sat at the table empty handed). After I placed my order, I waited roughly 45 minutes. I was tempted to just leave towards the end, but I had already paid. I had been waiting for months for a Vietnamese place to come to New Haven, so I was not going to give up on my pho that easily! When I got back to my office I could not wait to dig in. Everything was packaged up very well: the boiling hot broth was in one container, with noodles, beef, onions, scallions, cilantro in another. A third container held hot sauce, beansprouts, and a big bunch of fresh basil. I love that they kept everything separate so that the meat didn't overcook in the broth during travel, and that I could decide how much of all the condiments/etc to put in. The pho was definitely tasty. I've noticed other people comment on the Vietnamese cart by the med school having broth that was a little too sweet to be authentic - well, I felt a little similar about Pho & Spice's broth. To be clear, it is definitely more authentic and tastier than what is offered at the cart, but it still needs a little work. The cilantro, onion, basil, sprouts, etc were incredibly fresh, and the meat was yummy and of good quality. I'd like to give this place more stars, because I think the food is about a 4 out of 5. However, the service was painfully slow - especially for a dish like pho! I'm going to give it a few weeks and come back and try again. Hopefully they'll have all of the kinks worked out since it's a new place and I assume they are still trying to sort through some things. Finally, an actual Pho place in New Haven! (I don't count that mediocre Pho cart by the hospital or Thai places). The inside is renovated and done quite nicely. Not every Pho place on the East Coast needs to be a hole in the wall, amma right? Ordered the rare beef medium-sized bowl. Best Pho I've had in CT out of about a half dozen or so. Only critique would have been it was a little skimpy on the beef. Wife had the veggie Pho (comes with a chicken broth base) and was also tasty. Staff was great, although it wasn't busy at the time. Bottom line: I am recommending this place to all my friends and definitely coming back. I ordered pho in size small. I've both dined-in and taken out from Pho and Spice plenty of times; the food is usually pretty good, however our take-out order almost always has something incorrect/missing. My partner is vegetarian and one two separate occasions they included meat in her order (shrimp in the vegetarian spring rolls and chicken in her noodle dish) more than once. Excellent and "clean" food. I have run by this place a few times and every time it is packed with people. I was delighted to see them listed on Grub Hub, so I threw the idea out to some co-workers to order delivery from here. I got the Miso Ramen and it was exquisite. The broth was flavorful and just fantastic. It was not overly salty and the noodles, meat, and veggies in it were not greasy or oily. I did not get that terrible feeling after I ate all of it. You know that feeling I am talking about. The bad lunch decision hangover. You feel lethargic, yucky, and totally regretful about what you just did. My other co-workers also voted 5 out of 5. I wish I could give no stars. As I cut my throat seriously choking on a largebone that was in the chicken noodle soup. We politely asked for the bill and said we were leaving and could they strike the soup from the bill. They took my soup (which I didn't want them to do) as they said they wanted to give me a new one to take away. When my friend paid they then told me I could get a new soup but not take it off the premises. It was so rude and so upsetting. No apology. The owner laughed at us as they obviously lied. Few things to warn about: 1. The Curries do not come with rice. They will charge extra, which is messed up. 2. The kitchen staffs do not consider the eating experience. Meaning if one person in your party orders pho, he is going to receive it 10-15 minutes before other people. 3. Some of the staff are not fluent in English so make sure to go over what you ordered. Most of it was crunchy like the rice was scraped from the bottom of the pot. Some of the rice was soft but overall rice shouldn't be crunchy. Red curry was very creamy & tasty with LOTS of veggies. The food was absolutely disgusting. Actually disgusting was an understatement. I ordered their chicken satay and when I bit into it I thought, " this is a lot of fat on the chicken breast." We were driving through New Haven and decided to stop at Pho & Spice for lunch. First of all, the restaurant menu is completely different than what is posted on their website. We specifically came for the Mi Hoanh Thanh, but it was not on the menu. In fact, a lot of the Vietnamese dishes that are featured on their website, like vermicelli, were nowhere to be found on the menu. The waitress was not that familiar with the menu or even that helpful. On more than one occasion, I was told that an item was unavailable. Finally, I ordered a soup for my son but asked to substitute ramen noodles for the rice noodles. I also asked for a drunken noodles for myself. My son's soup came first but with the wrong noodles, so we sent it back. My dish came 5-10 mins later but instead of the flat thick noodles normally associated with drunken noodles- I got this wet clump of thin noodles. I am pretty sure they made my dish with the rice noodles from my son's soup. Service was extremely slow and haphazard despite the fact that the restaurant was pretty much empty. We also overheard the waitress tell one of the only other tables that they were only accepting cash payments even though we had just given her our credit card. Super shady! read more

I had the pho on my first visit and was very satisfied with the quality of the soup -- I have a feeling I'll be coming here at least once a week this winter for it! My husband ordered the Pad See Ew with tofu. The dish was very tasty, although there were only about 6-7 pieces of tofu (cooked very well). All in all, we had a very good meal.
