Service is slow: It's a newer restaurant and when it's busy, service is very slow. 4 people waiting to receive take-out were each told their food would be ready in "10 to 15 minutes." 40 minutes later the food was ready. Short staffed: The restaurant is short staffed. There's a sign on the front door stating they're hiring for waiters, waitresses. Once they catch their stride I expect they'll be an excellent Vietnamese restaurant. For now patience is required. read more

Pho Thien Phat, with two other restaurants near Richmond in Henrico, joins the growing ranks of generic Vietnamese restaurants in the area. We were seated promptly and our very personable server stopped to take our order 10 minutes later, and then the wait began. Two other tables nearby were seated, orders taken, appetizers then entrees delivered, and we were still waiting. Eventually our grilled pork summer rolls showed up. They were warm, but were a bit bland. The promised peanut sauce wasn't served, with a typical fish-sauce based dipping sauce substituting. It was OK, but definitely a bit underwhelming. By the time we finished our summer rolls, the table beside us, which arrived after we did, were finishing up their entrees. Our entrees were MIA and our server was taking orders in another part of the restaurant. The table behind us finished up, paid, and left. Our pho was still nowhere to be seen. Eventually another table near by, that was seated 20+ minutes after we were, received their entrees too. Long story short, after flagging down someone delivering food, and our server eventually checking on us, the kitchen was finally able to deliver our meals. The pho was good, but definitely not outstanding. The broth was very salty. The cuts of beef in our meals seemed of reasonable quality, but the serving size was average at best. Same goes for the noodles. It's a shame that with new Vietnamese restaurants opening frequently in this area, none of them really are taking any chances with the menu. Midtown Pho probably comes the closest, but even its menu pales in comparison to the original Dalat, the long-gone Vietnamese restaurant at Mission Valley, that exposed so many to the breadth and depth of Vietnamese cuisine. After our meals were finally delivered, our server stopped by and comped our entire meal due to the problems we experienced. We appreciated the sincerity of his apology. Things to try for sure: - Pho Dac Biet: The broth is really refreshing, but the meat was actually a little tough and they don't give too much. Other Vietnamese restaurants are more generous. - Hu Tieu: Better than the pho in terms of overall quality and flavor. - Com Tam Plate: Good grill flavor for the pork, but lots of tough pieces/cartilage that ruined the experience. Things to pass on: - Spring rolls: There was barely any meat filling. Other Vietnamese restaurants are more generous. - Egg rolls: There was also barely any meat filling, but was a nice fry. - Che 3 Mau: They don't even fill up the cup all the way for you. This one is a hard pass. - Banh Mi: Not enough mayo so it's a pretty dry eating experience. - Bone marrow: It's nice to try it for the special, but they don't boil it enough where you can actually scoop the marrow out of the bone. You get more tendon than bone marrow when you order this dish. It is a popular dish and recommended to come before 3 PM if you want to try it, but definitely not something I would get or crave regularly! read more

Food was good. My pork chops were amazing. My husband got pho but we we weren't sure if he actually got what he ordered. When we asked, we didn't really get a direct answer. It was a Friday night and it got really busy. I'm thinking they were a bit overwhelmed. Ordered drinks and didn't get them. Finally got them after our meal was over when we asked for them but when we got them it wasn't what we ordered either. Vietnamese coffee was quite strong, even for Vietnamese coffee. This place has lots of potential to be a great spot for authentic Vietnamese food if they can get more staff and better service. I will definitely give them another chance for sure! Finally made it back in almost a year. I got the Bún bò Huế this time. There were tons of meat and a portion of hock. The shredded banana leaf was a bonus. I would definitely wait a month or two before trying this restaurant again. It felt like the staff was very confused and unorganized. We came in a Saturday and it was really busy but when I asked how long the wait would be they said they did not know and it was not clear on what I needed to do to get on the wait list. When we finally sat down they did not provide any utensils for us, even after they brought out our appetizer and entree. We had to ask someone to bring us utensils and they forgot about our drink order, we got our drink at the end of our meal we ended up taking the drink to-go. Usually a large bowl at other pho restaurants would fill me up but here I was still hungry after I left. We were seated quickly, the server was sweet and friendly answering my questions regarding the different prices and extras one can add to your pho order. The meat cuts were slightly uncooked as ordered and expected. The toppings included cilantro! Never had that options before. Also, the toppings were fresh. Hubby got the pork vermicelli noodle dish. He said it was tasty but lacking in ingredients; it was mainly noodles. But tasty. We got pork bahn mi sandwiches to go: they were longer than what we're usually given. A couple thoughts; initially was thrilled with the bigger size, but the ingredients were not abundant and the flavor was somewhat lacking; not a lot of the pate paste... so it was a little dry and bland, unfortunately. I'll be back back to try some of their other dishes; which they seem to have a wider variety of the traditional Vietnamese dishes than the other pho restaurant we've been going to. This place is sparkling new and cleaner than most Vietnamese restaurants that I have been to. Service was slow. There's two of us, they brought my friend's order first and I ended up looking at him eat for over 20 mins (else the food goes cold) before I got mine. If you are in a Skilled Nursing Facility, you can get a tag for this (because you are not observing the other person's "dignity"). And this applies to restaurants everywhere. You should always bring the food together. We ordered pho and another soup (No. 28 in their menu). Pho was a-okay (we liked the pho in a resto in Morrisville better). Spices were not as pronounced versus the better pho restos (regional differences, perhaps?). The No. 28 soup, however, was divine. It was very aromatic (mostly of lemon grass). It's my new favorite (if I can only remember the name!). If not for the service faux pas, I would have rated better. Maybe I'll reassess next visit. read more

This place is hit or miss. I've ordered three times, and usually get the same thing. The first time I got a #13 pho and the fried egg rolls. I didn't receive the rolls. I called back the same day and spoke with a gentleman that wrote my name down and apologized informing me I'd get a free order my next visit. The next visit I ordered them again, but paid for it. Food is good, which is why I'll keep coming back. The third time I ordered they forgot the sauce for the egg rolls. My only criticism would be that they aren't consistent. As a Vietnamese food snob, I was impressed. My family lives in Little Saigon (Westminster, CA), the largest population of Vietnamese outside of Vietnam. The food is amazing. So my expectations are pretty high and I usually walk away disappointed. However, Pho Thien Phat is the probably the best pho in all of Raleigh/Durham/Cary area. I've been to most places. This has the most authentic broth, just the right balance of seasonings and clear broth. They are a little light on the meat, but overall, it's worth the trip and I will be returning frequently. Bun Bo Hue was less good, had some rare beef in it, not traditional, and would benefit from more lemon grass and banana blossom and different herbs. However, pho is outstanding.
